, 94, formerly of Calais, died April 23.Born in 1904 in Groton, Conn., he graduated from Exeter Academy and Yale University and later attended the University of Dijon in France.He taught French at the Hotchkiss School in Conn.and served as a foreign service officer by the U.S.State Department in 1928.He was acting consul general in Istanbul before WWII and retired in 1954 as first secretary of the embassy in Ankara, Turkey.After retirement, he earned a doctorate in Middle Eastern studies from Princeton University and began a second career as a professor.He taught at the University of Utah, Southern University of Memphis, Tenn., and Nathaniel Hawthorne College in Antrim, N.H.He received a Fulbright Scholarship to do research in Turkey and compiled oral histories of civilian and military advisers in Ataturk (Mustafa Kemal) for Columbia University.Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Latimer; two sons, Douglas Latimer and John Latimer; a sisters; five grandchildren.
