, 86, of Barre, died Nov. 2. Born in 1911 in East Ryegate, she was the daughter of Ray and Maude (Simonds) Hayes. She lived most of her life in Groveton, N.H. and graduated from the Houle Beauty Academy in Manchester, N.H. She owned and operated the Little Dutch Beauty Shoppe in Groveton. She and her mother also operated a rooming house. She had lived with her daughter, Charay Malas in Chelsea before moving to Rowan Court Nursing Home. She was a local news correspondent for the Berlin (N.H.) Reporter, St. Johnsbury Caledonia Record and the Lancaster (N.H.) Democrat. She wrote "Hilda's Handy Household Hints." She cared for many animals and donations may be made in her name to the Central Vermont Humane Society, PO Box 687, Montpelier, Vt. 05602. Survivors include her daughter, Charay Malas.
Sayah, Leo E.

, 91, of Williamstown, died Nov. 10. Born in 1906 in Orange, he was the son of Wilford and Josephine (Blow) Sayah. He attended Orange school. In 1938, he married Aline LaPerle, who died in 1993. He worked in road maintenance on town roads for the town of Orange and later owned and operated a farm in Williamstown until he retired. He was a member of St. Edward's Church in Williamstown. Survivors include three daughters, Rita (Mrs. Clyde) Bedell, Cecile Sayah and Alice (Mrs. Alphonse) LaRocque; a son, Leo; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

, 90, of Berlin, died Nov. 9. Born in 1907 in Berlin, he was the son of Emanuel and Charlotte (St. John) Shepard. He received his education in Berlin. He had served in the Army during WWI. In 1937, he married Alda Bertelli. He owned and operated Shepard Moving Co., retiring in the later 1970s. He was a member of St. Augustine Church. Survivors include his wife; a sister, Ruth Bishop; a brother, Carl; several nieces and nephews.

, 66, of Duxbury, died Nov. 11. Born in 1930 in Waterbury, he was the son of Herbert and Goldie (Hill) West. He graduated from Waterbury High School. In 1954, he married Henrietta Sherman, who died in 1990. He was a stonecutter, worked in maintenance at the Vermont State Hospital and worked for IBM, retiring in 1992. He served with the Waterbury Army National Guard Unit. Survivors include a daughter, Susan West; a son, Herbert; three grandchildren; a sister; nieces and nephews.

, 84, formerly of Barre, East Barnet and St. Johnsbury, died Nov. 6 in North Haverill, N.H. He was born in 1912 in Barre, the son of Harley and Della (LaFleur) Darling. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He was employed as operator of the Comerford Dam in East Barnet. Survivors include his wife, Jean (Flynn) Darling; four sons, Greg, Chris, Gary and Matthew; eight grandchildren.

, 75, of Montpelier, died Nov. 17. Born in 1922 in Middlesex, she was the daughter of Charles and Dora (Barlow) Cooney Sr. She attended Middlesex Grade School and Montpelier High School. In 1941, she married Louis Fernandez, who died in 1989. They owned and operated Fernandez Market until 1988. Survivors include a daughter, Louise Fernandez; a son, Phillip Fernandez; two grandchildren; four sisters; a brother; her stepfather; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

, 87, formerly of Montpelier, died Nov. 17. Born in St. Austel, Cornwall, England, she moved to Springfield, Mass. at age five. She attended Bryant and Stratton Secretarial School. In 1940, she married Robert Peakes. She was secretary to the post exchange officer at Columbia Air Base in S.C., while her husband was stationed there. They moved to Montpelier where she worked as an interior decorator. She also worked as an interior decorator for National Life Insurance Co. and later became assistant director of the sales promotion division. After she retired, she owned and operated a Christmas Barn in Moretown until moving to Brewster, Mass. in 1978. Survivors include her husband; nieces and nephews.

He was employed as chief of the Congressional Research Department of the Library of Congress. Survivors include his wife, Katherine E. In 1924, she married Harold Reynolds, who died in 1962. She worked at Rock of Ages Capacitor Plant in Barre, retiring in 1982. Survivors include two grandsons, Randy Reynolds and Daniel Reynolds; two great-granddaughters; nieces and nephews.

She attended Barre City elementary schools and graduated from Spaulding High School. In 1946, she married H. Wendell Fitts. She was a sales clerk at Homer Fitts Company, which was owned by her husband. She was a member of the Barre Congregational Church and attended St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Sun City Center, Fla., where they retired to. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Wendy Marcotte; five sons, Donald, David, Stephen, Robbie and Scott; 11 grandchildren; a brother; nieces and nephews.

She graduated from Vassar College and received a master's degree from Albany State Teacher's College. In 1935, she married William Herold Feierabend, who died in 1990. She was a teacher in Red Hook, N.H. Survivors include three daughters, Carol Feierabend, Dale Schrader and Joan Feierabend; seven grandchildren.

She worked at National Life Insurance Company and following retirement, was a receptionist and bookkeeper at St. Augustine Rectory. She was a member of St. Augustine Parish. Survivors include two sisters, Florida Pinard and Helen Dell; many nieces and nephews.

Born in 1937 in Woodbury, he was the son of Harold and Phoebe (Shedd) Martin Sr. He attended Woodbury School and served with the Army. He had been employed at Ralston Purina Co. in St. Johnsbury and later owned and operated a garage in Walden and was an auctioneer. He also worked for White Pass Railroad in Alaska and operated a tractor-trailer business, before becoming physically disabled.
