, 47, of Barre Town, died Oct. 24. Born in 1950 in Woodsville, N.H., he was the son of Raymond and Evelyn (Wheelock) Sayers. He attended schools in the central Vermont area and was employed as a stone cutter for several area granite manufacturers. He was more recently employed as a computer machinist. In 1976, he married Judy Potvin. Survivors include his wife; three sons, James, Christopher and Edward Jr.; four daughters, Amber Page, Sonya Sayers, Corina Sayers and Jennifer Sayers; three grandsons; his mother and step-mother; a brother; three step-brothers; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

, 47, formerly of Barre, died Oct. 26. Born in 1950 in Barre, she was the daughter of Alfred and Isabelle (Edson) Rutledge. She attended schools in Haverhill, N.H. In 1967, she married Rodney Paye. She had been employed at P&H Truckstop. Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Donna Rainey, Paula Grant and Heather Paye; a son, Chad; seven grandchildren; three sisters; two brothers; several nieces and nephews.

, 92, of Barre, died Oct. 25. Born in 1905 in Stamford, N.Y., she was the daughter of William and Grace (Marks) Austin. She graduated from high school in Margaretville, N.Y. and from Middlebury College. She pursued graduate studies at the University of Massachusetts, Wellesley College, Tufts University, William and Mary, the University of Vermont, American Academy in Rome and the Vergillian School in Cumae, Italy. She began her teaching career in Cornwall and taught for a year in Rochester. From 1929 to 1944, she taught in Northfield, Mass. She taught at Spaulding High School from 1944 to 1970, when she retired. She was a member of the Hedding United Methodist Church. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Barbara (Mrs. Amos A.) Austin; one nephew; grandnieces; grandnephews; and cousins.

, 90, of Orange, died Oct. 25. Born in 1907 in West Brattleboro, he was the son of Edward and Maude (Donaldson) Thurber. In 1910, his family moved to Saskatchewan, Canada, and he attended schools there. He moved to Orange in 1951 and in 1952, married Mamie McCarthy Brooks, who died in 1990. He farmed in Orange until his retirement in 1987. He was a veteran of WWII, having served with the Army. Survivors include his companion, Dorothy Hutchins; a stepson, Charles Brooks; a nephew; two nieces; grandnieces and grandnephews.

Born in 1914 in East Fairfield, he was the son of Sidney and Maude Harding. He graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy, graduated from Dartmouth College with a bachelor's degree, earned a master's degree from the University of Vermont and continued pre-doctoral studies at Columbia University and Assumption College. In 1940, he married Dorothy Brown. He began his career at Lamoille Central Academy in Hyde Park, then taught at Brandon High School, served as principal at Waitsfield High School and master at the Hill School in Pottstown, Pa. He later became dean of Vermont College and then guidance counselor at Spaulding High School. He belonged to Trinity United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife; a son, Jay R. Harding; a daughter, Wendy Lynn; two grandsons; two granddaughters.

, 95, of Barre, died Oct. 27. Born in 1902 in Worcester, he was the son of Charlie and Ella (Getchell) Richardson. He attended schools in Worcester. He was a self-taught handyman and worked on his grandfather's farm in Worcester and other area farms. He was also a logger and board sawyer. Survivors include four sisters, Madge Chaffee, Helen Clough, Ruth Pecor and Nellie Cody; nieces, nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews.

, 67, of Tunbridge, died Nov. 4. Born in 1930 in Detroit, MI, he was the son of Paul Barney and Clara Belle (Hutchinson) Palmer. The family moved to Middlesex in the early 30s and he and his sister moved to East Randolph to live with John and Elsie Whitney Rogers. They moved to Tunbridge with the Rogers' family in 1940. He attended schools in Randolph, East Randolph and Tunbridge and served with the Army during the Korean War. In 1962, he married Lorraine Conradson. He was employed by A.H. Magalsky of Tunbridge, Darcier's Saw Mill in Chelsea and did tractor and logging work. He then was a carpenter for Maurice Clark of So. Royalton and later he and Craig Chapman established the Palmer & Chapman concrete foundation company. He and his son owned and operated Palmer & Son Foundations and he raised pigs with his daughter. Survivors include his wife; a son, Joseph; a daughter, Shelley Barnaby; five grandchildren; two sisters; a half-sister; two foster sisters; nieces, nephews and cousins.

, 71, formerly of Marshfield and more recently of Waynesville, N.C., died Nov. 1. Born in 1926 Enfield, CT, he was the son of Sylvester and Emma (Landry) White. He was a Navy veteran of WWII. He and his wife, Patricia Bremner White, owned and operated the Marsh-Plain Motel in Marshfield from 1972 to 1983, moving to North Carolina in 1984. He was also an electrician. Survivors include his wife; his daughter, Martha Keating; two sons, Andrew and Roger; a stepson, Donald Mersereau; a sister; two brothers; six grandchildren.

, 64, of Chelsea, died Oct. 31. Born in 1933 in Chelsea, he was the son of Everett and Bernice (Flint) LaFrancis. He attended school in Chelsea and graduated from Chelsea High School. In earlier years, he worked at the Ford Poultry Co. in Royalton, the Holstein Friesjan Association and Bartlett Tree Experts, both of Brattleboro. He served with the Air Force during the Korean War and the Vietnam era. He worked for the Postal Service at the Barre City Post Office, retiring in 1994. In 1963, he married Florence Joan Chivers. They lived in Barre for 20 years and moved to Chelsea in 1994. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Michelle LaFrancis; two brothers; two sisters; an aunt; nieces and nephews.

, 87, of Waterbury, died Nov. 1. Born in 1910 in Danville, she was the daughter of David and Emily (Green) Corbett. She attended schools in St. Johnsbury and Burlington. She was employed as a housekeeper for the O'Brien family in Burlington and for the past 49 years, made her home with Vera Hanks in Waterbury, where she also worked as a domestic.

, 67, of Montpelier, died Oct. 31. Born in 1930 in Montpelier, she was the daughter of William Moore and Florence (Jerd) Moore. She attended schools in Montpelier. She had been employed as a cook for several area restaurants including the former Miss Montpelier Diner, Wayside, Brown Derby, Stockyard Inn in Montpelier, Henry's Diner in Burlington and the Wagon Wheel in Groton. In 1947, she married Harold Lamphear Jr. In 1965, she married Andrew Hamblin, who died in 1978. Mr. Lamphear died in 1997. Survivors include three daughters, Catherine Machia, Jean LaFromboise and Gail Prim; three sons, Harold, William and Matthew; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister; three brothers; an aunt; several nieces and nephews.

He was employed by the Vermont Marble quarries. , Sr., 87, of Berlin, died Oct. 31. Born in 1909 in Bridgeport, Conn., he was the son of Clarence and Pearl Walden (Hayden) Walker. He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with a forestry degree and received a master's in forestry from Yale University. He served with the Army during WWII. In 1935, he married Dorothy Moore, who died in 1991. They moved to Vermont in 1947 and he accepted the position of county forester and later became northern district forester for the Vermont Forestry Department, from which he retired. He was active in the Berlin Congregational Church. Survivors include a daughter, Susan Barrett; a son, Edward Walker Jr.; a sister; a cousin; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He served with the Navy during WWII and founded Middlesex Tool Company, a machine and fabrication shop in New Jersey. He retired in 1982. Survivors include a sons, George; two daughters, Beverly Conway and Laurie Mack-Warden; a half-sister; seven grandchildren; his companion, Susan McLean; a nephew.
Montgomery, Burton P.

, 79, of East Brookfield, died Nov. 3. Born in 1917 in Randolph, he was the son of Erwin and Nellie (Bird) Montgomery. He attended schools in Randolph, East Brookfield and Vermont Agricultural College in Randolph Center. He also completed correspondence studies in agriculture from Lasalle University. In 1941, he married Florence Gilmore. They lived on the family farm in Montgomery and in addition to farming, he tended a garden, hauled milk, raised poultry, logged and did beekeeping. He sold the farm in 1969, and he and his brother, Jack, managed a logging operation. He also sold real estate for Peterson Realty of Burlington. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Theresa Coutts, Marguerite Montgomery and Judith Prive; two brothers; a sister; 10 grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
