, 69, of York Street, Lyndon, died at her home Monday morning, Aug. 5, 2002. Sarah was born in Lancaster, N.H., Feb. 21, 1933, the daughter of Patrick R. and Dora (Hardy) Monahan. Raised in Lancaster, she was a graduate of Lancaster Academy. Sewing and reading have brought her enjoyment over the years but taking care of her children and grandchildren brought her the greatest enjoyment. She has been a 39-year resident of Lyndon, moving there from Lunenburg. Family members include six children, Cheryl Bona and husband Brian of Lyndon, Cynthia Burrington and husband Douglas of Kirby, Cathleen Paris and husband Eric of Lyndonville; James Spaulding and wife Cheri of St. Johnsbury, Bruce Spaulding and wife Barbara of Lyndon, and R.W. Spaulding and fianc?e Jami Moss of Lancaster; two sisters, Jane Harvey and husband John of Beverly Hills, Fla., and Patricia Pierce of Lancaster; 14 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Buteau and Helen Newell, and a brother, Richard Monahan. There will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday morning, Aug. 9, at 11 a.m., at All Saints Church in Lancaster. The Rev. John Mazzei, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lancaster.

, 64, of Percy Road, Stark, N.H., died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, in a fishing accident at Christine Lake in Stark. Born in Groveton, N.H., Jan. 11, 1938, the son of Clyde L. and Laura E. (Gagnon) Hickey, he lived in Rochester, N.H., for a period of time, and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, becoming a Disabled American Veteran. He moved back to Stark in 1989. Mr. Hickey was self-employed as a small-engine repairman. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church of Groveton, a member of D.A.V., and a member of the Stark Fire Department. He was an avid outdoorsman, and loved hunting and fishing, which was obvious from the clothes he was wearing at the time of his accident, which said "I'd rather be fishing." Members of his family include a son, Mark E. and Trish Hickey of Laconia, N.H.; a daughter, Laura A. Brooks of Rochester, N.H.; three grandchildren; three brothers, Stanley and Jo Hickey of Dunedin, Fla., Leon A. and Marg Hickey of Virginia Beach, Va., and Richard J. and Jane Hickey of Louisville, Ky.; two sisters, Iva M. and Robert Wood of St. Johnsbury, and Leona E. and Bruce "Bill" Demers of Stark; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Oscar was predeceased by two brothers, Norman in 1992 and Harvey in 1995. At Oscar's request he will be cremated and services will follow on Saturday, Aug. 10, at 9 a.m. at Main-Armstrong Funeral Home, 59 State St., Groveton, with Father Daniel Deveau of St. Francis Xavier Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Emerson Road Cemetery in Stark. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

82, of 1272 Concord Ave., St. Johnsbury, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002. He was born in St. Valerian, Quebec, April 30, 1920, the son of Adelard and Auralie (Landry) Ouellette. Fred was a longtime employee at Fairbanks Scales. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 1343 and was the lodge's Exalted Ruler in 1981-1982. Fred coached the St. Johnsbury Elks ritual teams which four times captured the state trophy and went on to compete in the nationals, finishing as high as 13th. The current Vermont state ritual trophy is now named in his honor. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Evangeline "Van" (Thorley) Ouellette; two sons, Robert of Columbus, Ohio, and Ronald of Keene, N.H.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Berthe Choquette; two brothers, Joseph Ouellette of Leominster, Mass., and Laurent Ouellette of Hartford, Conn.; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Cecile, and two brothers, Edmond and Albert. Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 9, at 10 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist Church. Following the committal service at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, a reception will follow at the Elks Lodge, which all should feel free to attend. Visiting hours will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sayles Funeral Home. 89, of Country Village Road, Lancaster, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002 at Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster. Mr. Willey was born in Wellesley, Mass., Nov. 22, 1912, the son of Paul S. and Eolahbell (Stoddard) Willey. He attended schools in Worcester, Mass., and was a graduate of Becker College there. For many years he resided in Framingham and Natick, Mass. He lived at Maidstone Lake and Stuart, Fla., prior to his residence at Holton Point and Country Village Health Care in Lancaster. He was a member of the BPOE 1264 of Framingham, Mass., the Middlesex Lodge of Masons in Framingham, and the Bektash Shrine. Family members include a nephew, Steven Dooley of Nashua, N.H.; a brother, Paul S. Willey of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; two sisters, Katherine Johnson of Palm Bay, Fla., and Dorothy Sisson of Brewster, Mass.; and other nieces and nephews. A visiting hour will be held Friday afternoon, Aug. 9, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster. A funeral service will follow immediately after at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. David Pendleton, pastor of the Lancaster Congregational United Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will be held at a later date at the Ridgwell Cemetery in Guildhall, Vt. , 66, of 146 High St., Bath, N.H., died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, following an extended illness. She was born in Monroe, N.H., Oct. 25, 1935, the daughter of Alson and Marguerite (Boardman) Blanchard. She was raised in Monroe, where she attended Monroe Grade School, and graduated from McIndoes Academy in McIndoe Falls, Vt. Mrs. Chase graduated from Burdett College, and had worked at a resort in the White Mountains; for Thomas Pharmacy in Wells River, Vt., Northern Auto in Woodsville, and for several years as the bookkeeper at Boudreault Plumbing & Heating in North Haverhill. She was a member of the Monroe Grange, Bath Congregational Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher and played the piano, Bath Fire Department Auxiliary, McLure's Alumni Band, and Ross-Wood American Legion Auxiliary Unit 20 of Woodsville. Mrs. Chase had also assisted in the record keeping in the Bath Town Office. Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Dennis E. Chase of Bath; a son, Daniel A. Chase, and daughter, Diane E. Moodie, both of Bath; two grandchildren, Scott and Laura Moodie; two brothers, P.J. Blanchard and Gordon Blanchard, both of Monroe; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a sister, Kathleen "Kitty" McIntyre, May 8, 1993. There will be no calling hours. , 92, of Kittery and Eliot, Maine, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at the Alternative House in Kittery following a brief illness. She was born in Hull, Mass., March 21, 1910, the daughter of Waldo Fred Glover and Gertrude Waller Simpson. Ms. Glover was a 1931 graduate of Boston University College of Liberal Arts. She was employed by the Ginn & Co. (formerly Xerox Corp.) in Boston, Mass., for 36 years before her retirement in 1970. According to her lifelong friend Mildred Obrey, Ms. Glover was very active in the town of Eliot as a member of the Republican Town Committee, the Eliot Garden Club, a charter member of the friends of the Eliot Library, and the York County Teachers Society and several of its committees. She was a contributing member for the Ladies Circle Group at the First Congregational Church of Eliot. She loved gardening and was instrumental in the judging of flowers at competitions. She would grow her own flowers and vegetables and give them to people she met. Mrs. Glover also traveled extensively with the York County Teachers Group and the Grange Hall. Helen will be sadly missed by her nieces Barbara Moore and Nancy Bressi of Bowie, Md., as well as her many cousins and friends. Helen was predeceased by a brother, Gordon Glover. Funeral services will be held at the First Congregational Church in Eliot, Maine, Aug. 17, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Gail Kindburg will officiate. A time of sharing and remembrance will follow the service. Interment will take place at a later date.

, 76, Greensboro Bend, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. She was born April 25, 1926 in Fontaine Bleau, Quebec, Canada, the daughter of Philemon and Mary (Marcoux) Racine. She and and her family moved to the Greensboro area in 1949, where they owned and operated a farm until 1977. Estelle was a communicant of St. Michael's Church in Greensboro Bend, a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the St. Michael's Altar Society. She cleaned many of the area's summer camps and enjoyed making Christmas wreaths. She was devoted to her family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Roger, in March 1998 and by five brothers and two sisters. Estelle is survived by her three sons, Fern Fontaine and his wife, Laura, of Newport, Raymond Fontaine of Burlington, and Gerard Fontaine of Greensboro Bend; two daughters and their spouses, Suzanne and her husband, Leon Savoie, of Hardwick, and Theresa and James Cruz of Tacoma, Wash. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Aug. 12 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Church, Greensboro Bend, with burial to follow in St. Michael's Cemetery, Greensboro Bend. , 70, of Pilgrim Manor, West Burke, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. He was born in Lunenburg, Nov. 6, 1931, the son of the late Everett and Freda (Fassett) McCullock. He served in the U.S. Army overseas in Germany during the Korean War. He later married Joyce Magoon, on Jan. 30, 1954. He was employed at several area farms, principally the John Gingue Farm in Waterford and Joe Roy Farm in West Barnet. He loved spending time in the great outdoors hunting and fishing, and treasured his time spent camping at Island Pond. He was a good family man and enjoyed spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Joyce (P.O. Box 1, West Burke, VT 05871); his mother-in-law, Margaret Magoon of St. Johnsbury; six children, Leon F. McCullock Jr. of York, Pa., Patrick McCullock and wife Karen of Morrisville, Thomas McCullock and wife Norma of Barrington, N.H., Andrew McCullock and fiancee Cindy of St. Johnsbury, Donald McCullock of Barre, and Jody Boardman and husband Carman of South Ryegate; one sister, Katherine Clifford and husband Richard of St. Johnsbury Center; 12 grandchildren, Mark, Miranda and Amber; Suzanne, Matt and Ricky; Michael, Kelly, Brian and Sam; and Jason and Devin; and nieces, nephews and in-laws. , 86, of Riva Vue Road, Lunenburg, died Saturday morning, Aug. 10, 2002, at the Country Village Health Care Center in Lancaster, N.H. Mrs. Colby was born in Victory, Feb. 13, 1916, the daughter of Albert C. and Cecil E. (DePoutee) Hodgdon. She was raised in Granby, attending local schools there, and lived most of her lifetime in Lunenburg. She and her husband Howard owned and operated the River View Farm for many years, where they also raised their family. She was also a Vermont maple sugar maker and a lady who enjoyed music. She sang in the church choir and especially enjoyed a good kitchen junket. She also enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, and cooking for her family and anyone else she could recruit to the dinner table. On May 29, 2002 she observed her 70th wedding anniversary with husband Howard H. Colby. She was a member of the Lunenburg Methodist Church and was 4-H Leader for many years. Family members include her husband of Lunenburg; three children, Judith C. Young, Weston H. Colby, and Amos C. Colby, all of Lunenburg; a sister, Lola Ursin of Westbrook, Conn.; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; three grandchildren; and 11 siblings. Per Mrs. Colby's request there are no calling hours. A funeral service will be held Thursday morning, Aug. 15, at 10 a.m. at the Lunenburg Methodist Church. The Rev. Donald Thomas of Monroe, N.H. will officiate. , 85, of 530 Pinehurst St., Lyndonville, passed away at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury, Monday, Aug. 12, 2002. She was born Aug. 6, 1917, in Canada, the daughter of the late Edward and Anna (Kennison) Guilbault. Her husband, Nelson M. Charron, predeceased her, Nov. 6, 2000. She is survived by seven children and their spouses, Richard and Lorraine Charron of Lyndon, Jerry and Chris Charron of Lyndonville, John and Alberta Charron of North Danville, Elaine and Pete Laferriere of Westmore, Linda and Donald Gilman of Lyndon, Nelson "Ticka" Charron of West Burke, and Suzanne and Richard Tanner of Craftsbury Common; 23 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth Guilbault and wife Ann of Springfield, Mass., and Richard Guilbault of California; two sisters-in-law, Philomen "Pap" Pillsbury of Lyndonville, and Pauline Strizzi and husband George of Vero Beach, Fla; and several nieces and nephews. , 46, of 931 Hall Road, South Ryegate, died Aug. 10, 2002, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center following an extended illness. She was born in Haverhill, July 22, 1956, a daughter of Clinton Boyce and Frances Cushing. A lifelong resident, she attended Newbury schools and graduated from Oxbow High School in Bradford. Mrs. Farley had been employed as a paraprofessional at Oxbow High School in Bradford and Blue Mountain Union School in Wells River. She was predeceased by her daughter, Iris Farley, Feb. 10, 1990. Survivors include her husband of 31 years, Sheldon I. Farley of South Ryegate; four children, Maria M. Farley, Daniel S. Farley, Dawna J. Farley and Mark S. , 88, of Greensboro, died peacefully, Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at her residence. She was born June 11, 1914, in Greensboro, the daughter of Albert B. and Florence (Peel) DeBrune. She attended Greensboro public schools, and graduated from Greensboro High School, Class of 1931. She continued her education at the University of Vermont. On March 16, 1935, she married Everett Eddy Lyles in Stowe. They made their home in Connecticut before returning to Greensboro in 1946. Together they opened Lyles Enterprises, consisting of a filling station, Greensboro camp patrol, antique sales, insurance, and real estate. Helen was affiliated with the Greensboro United Church of Christ. She was a member of the Mountain View Country Club, the Greensboro and Orleans historical societies, the Greensboro Assocation, the Prudential Committee for the Greensboro Fire District 1, and the Vermont Insurance Agents Association. She enjoyed traveling. Survivors include a daughter, Janet Long of Greensboro; a son, James H. Lyles and wife Shirley of Bethesda, Md.; two grandsons, David E. Lyles of Boyds, Md., and Michael J. Lyles of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn Springstead of Montpelier, and Elma Carreer of Lenox, Mass.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Everett, June 16, 1979. A memorial service will be held Friday, Aug. 16 at 4 p.m. at the Greensboro United Church of Christ, with the Rev. , 76, of Lyndonville, died at her home Sunday evening, Aug. 11, 2002, with her family by her side. She was born Jan. 3, 1926, in Lyndon, the daughter of the late Fred and Effie (Rainey) Lynaugh. Opal graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1943. She married Irvin W. Sargent, Jan. 7, 1946. Born and raised on Pudding Hill, Opal helped establish the Pudding Hill School reunions. She was a loyal supporter of Lyndon Institute and served as trustee for its Alumni Association. She also was a volunteer for the Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital Auxiliary, Caledonia County Cancer Fund, and American Red Cross local blood drives. She was a member of TOPS chapter 29 of East Burke and served on many committees at the Lyndon Center Baptist Church. Opal enjoyed gardening and needlework and was very devoted to her family and friends. Survivors include her husband, Irvin Sargent of Lyndonville; two daughters, Nancy J. Haslam and husband Donald of Lyndonville, and Bonnie E. Curran and husband John of Concord, N.C.; three grandchildren, Lisa A. Wheeler and husband Bobby of Kannapolis, N.C., John M. Curran and wife Alison of Concord, N.H., and Lisa M. Curran of Alimeta, Calif.; many nieces and nephews; and her Boston terrier, "Lyndy." She was predeceased by two brothers, Kenneth Lynaugh, and Percy Lynaugh and wife Reta; and four sisters and their husbands, Tinna and Dexter Grant, Mabel and Ralph Hastings, Shirley and Maurice Berry, and Elsie and Russell Stahler. , 69, of Bethlehem, N.H., passed away peacefully at her home, Tuesday morning, Aug. 6, 2002, with her son Peter and daughter Jennifer by her side. She was born March 18, 1933, in Lauzanne, Switzerland, the daughter of Rene and Frances (Glessner) Mathey. In 1948, along with her mother and brother George, she moved to Bethlehem, and resided at the Rocks Estate, which was built by her grandfather, John J. Glessner. Simone attended the Spence School in New York City, the Abbot Academy in Andover, Mass., and the Catherine Gibbs School in Boston, Mass. She supported many charitable organizations, such as Copper Cannon in Franconia, the Humane Society of the United States, and the White Mountain Animal League of Sugar Hill. In 1956 she married the late Dowling F. Stackpole. She is survived by two sons, Harold W. Vinson of Phoenix, Ariz., and Peter D. Stackpole of Hood River, Ore.; a daughter, Jennifer M. Stackpole of Missoula, Mont. and Bethlehem; and a brother, George R. Mathey of Ipswich, Mass. A memorial service will be held at the Rocks Estate in Bethlehem, Sunday, Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. A gathering of family and friends will follow the service. 70, of 1541 Scotch Hollow Road, Newbury, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., due to complications from cancer surgery. He was born in Newbury, Sept. 1, 1931, the son of Rodney and Agnes (Oliver) Wilds. He was a lifelong resident, graduated from Bradford Academy, and worked at the P & C Grocery Store in Bradford until retiring at age 62. He continued to work there part time until the summer of 2001, and for the past four summers worked at the Four Corners Farm in South Newbury. He was a member and master of Riverside Grange; member of the Vermont State Grange; and member and deacon of the First Congregational Church of Newbury. He enjoyed working his flower beds and attending and supporting local high school basketball teams. Survivors include his wife, Linda (Colbeth) Wilds, whom he married May 20, 1967; two sons, Steven Wilds of East Thetford, and Michael Wilds and wife Sarah of Fairlee; two grandchildren, Matthew and Jennifer Wilds; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. , 81, of Stoughton, Mass., and formerly of Groton, Vt., died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at Stoughton Nursing Home. He was the husband of Hazel A. (MacCombie) Christmann. Born in Boston, he was a graduate of Stoughton schools. Mr. Christmann was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and obtained the rank of tech sergeant. He was a resident of Groton for over 30 years and had lived in Stoughton for the past three years. He worked as a hardware salesman at St. Jay Hardware in St. Johnsbury and also at Stoughton Hardware in Stoughton. He retired in 1995. He was an accomplished photographer and owned Blue Mountain Photography in Groton. Mr. Christmann was active in the First Baptist Church in Groton and was a former Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 57 at the United Church of Christ, Stoughton. In addition to his wife, Hazel, he is survived by his children, Jean E. Fernandez of Stoughton, Robert H. Christmann of Easthampton, Mass., Nancy E. Christmann of South Easton, Mass., and Mark J. Christmann of Harvard, Mass.; eight grandchildren; and two sisters, Margaret Green and Esther Madan, both of Stoughton. He was predeceased by a brother and sister, Jacob Christmann and Elizabeth Doty. 65, of 8 Elm Street, Woodsville, N.H., died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002. He was born in Woodsville, April 29, 1937, a son of Karl W. White and Eunice M. (Rogers) Coulter. Kermit made a career with the U.S. Navy, serving three tours of duty on the USS Forrestal. After retiring, Kermit returned to Woodsville, where he worked at the parts counter for NAPA; as a custodian at the Woodsville National Guard Armory, and then as a truck driver for various trucking companies in the area. Kermit was a member of the Burns Lodge 66 F & AM of Littleton, the Navy Fleet Reserve, the Navy Memorial Foundation, VFW Post 5245 of North Haverhill, and American Legion Ross Wood Post 20 in Woodsville. He was an active member of the Woodsville Volunteer Ambulance service for 12 years, and was an avid car racing fan and fisherman. Surviving relatives include his wife of 42 years, Brenda (Kennedy) White of Woodsville; one daughter, Kelly A. White of Woodsville; one son, Timothy J. White of Lebanon, N.H.; four grandchildren, Kyle Belyea, Kegan White, Kassia White and Garrett White; one stepsister, Anna Parker Bronson of Littleton; two stepbrothers, Everett Rioux of Tennessee and Arthur Rioux of St. Petersburg, Fla.; his stepmother, Cora L. 71, of Woodsville, N.H., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at the Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, following a brief illness related to acute respiratory distress syndrome. He was born in Woodsville, May 8, 1931, a son of Beatrice Wheeler Ingerson. Ike graduated from the Haverhill Academy in June 1949, and the University of New Hampshire in June 1953. He then joined the U.S. Army and did a tour during the Korean War. He returned to school and graduated from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1960. Upon graduation he worked in Laconia, N.H., and then returned to Woodsville in the early 1960s to work at EB Mann's Drug Store, the oldest drug store in the United States. Ike became a partner and later the owner, until the store was sold in 1984, after which it became the Woodsville Pharmacy in Butson's. Ike continued working as a pharmacist until he retired in 1996. He was a member of the Grafton-Kane Lodge 46 F & AM of North Haverhill, the American Legion Ross-Wood Post 20, the Woodsville-Wells River Cohase Lions Club, AARP, and the Jaycee's. Ike was also a Boy Scout leader in 1965 and very active in the leadership of the Woodsville Youth Recreation program. Ike is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sylvia Brill Wheeler of Woodsville; three sons, Mark S. Wheeler of Woodsville, Kenneth Wheeler of Scituate, Mass., and David S. Wheeler of Roanoke, Va.; one daughter, Teresa L. Fortier of Bow, N.H.; three half brothers, Richard Ingerson of Haverhill, Russell Ingerson of Littleton, and Donald Ingerson of North Haverhill; three grandchildren, Sean Fortier and Stacia Aldrich, both of Bow, N.H., and Alicia Wheeler of Woodsville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two half brothers, Douglas Ingerson of Littleton, and Leland Ingerson of Haverhill. (Averell), 85, of Peacham, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. She was born in North Reading, Mass., Aug. 27, 1916, the daughter of Charles W. and Helen G. (Fulton) Averell. Connie was a graduate of Colby College. She married Dwight H. Cooley, May 31, 1952. Connie retired as clerk at Vermont Job Service after 17 years. For the last 18 years she has been living half the year in Peacham and half the year in Wickenburg, Ariz. Connie was a member of Business & Professional Women, a 50-year member of the Peacham Congregational Church where she taught Sunday School, a life member of the New Hampshire and Vermont Genealogy Society, and a member of the Vermont Historical Society. Her hobbies included traveling with Dwight, working on family genealogy, counted cross stitch, and reading at the library. Surviving relatives include her husband of 50 years, Dwight H. Cooley of Peacham; one sister, Priscilla Deane of Piqua, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one brother and one sister. , 76, of St. Johnsbury, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at home with his family. He was born in Danville, Aug. 25, 1925, the son of Joseph and Eva (Oderkirk) Lowrey. Early in his career he worked for Cabot Creamery, at the bottom of Clay Hill in St. Johnsbury, in operations, and was the projectionist at the Star Theatre in St. Johnsbury. From 1964 to 1987, he and his wife owned and operated Anair Memorials on Clay Hill in St. Johnsbury. He was a life member of the Elks Club, and enjoyed fishing and bingo. Survivors include three sons and their wives, Michael and Judy Lowrey of Brunswick, Ga., Carroll "Shorty" and Susan Lowrey of St. Johnsbury, and Steven and Debbie Lowrey of St. Johnsbury; a sister, Christine Rainey of Windsor Locks, Conn.; a sister-in-law, Mary Lowrey of Burlington; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a very close trade school student, David Farnham and wife Debby of Peacham. He was predeceased by his wife, Lorraine (Anair) Lowrey in 1987; a brother, Raymond A. Lowrey in 1995; and a sister, Alberta Barrett, in 1999. Graveside services will be held at the Mt. , "Hank," "Hip," 74, of Bradford, Vt., died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at home following and extended illness. Hank was born in Woodsville, N.H., Sept. 30, 1927, a son of Henry C. and Sadie (Boardway) Mann Sr. Hank began teaching in Hancock, N.H., and soon moved to Herndon, Va., where he taught English, math, biology, drivers education, and finished his teaching career as a guidance counselor at Herndon High School. He was active in the school's drama club, where he directed many productions. The school established the Hank Awards, recognizing outstanding male and female actors, in his name. Hank retired from teaching in the early 1980s and returned to the Upper Valley. He had a great knowledge of nature and was eager to share his skills, particularly in bird watching. He was also well-known for being a master storyteller. He was a member of Grafton-Kane Lodge 46 F & AM of North Haverhill, the Lions Club in Virginia, and the Tabor Valley Players of Bradford; and he served as treasurer of the Newbury Town House Cemetery Association. He was fond of the bagpipes and took lessons over the years. He was predeceased by his first wife, Joyce (Garceau) Mann, Feb. 7, 1987; and by an infant sister. Survivors include his wife, Susan (Thompson) Mann, whom he married Aug. 16, 1987; one son, Bradley S. Mann of Holland, Vt.; two daughters, Pamela Vines of Newbury Center, and Melissa Mann of McIndoe Falls; three stepsons, Geoffrey and Andrew Boyce of Bradford and Craig Boyce of Montpelier; 10 grandchildren; one brother, George E. , 60, formerly of Twin Mountain, N.H., died Monday evening, Aug. 18, 2002, at Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster, after a brave battle with cancer. Mr. Kane was born in Queens, N.Y., Sept. 3, 1941, the son of Sylvester and Ann (Yanatuano) Kane. "Vinnie" graduated from high school on Long Island, N.Y. He drove transit buses on Long Island and belonged to the Uniondale Volunteer Fire Department before moving to New Hampshire in 1969. He was self-employed most of his life as a truck driver, logger, mechanic, electrician and plumber. He was a jack of all trades who learned most of his skills from the old-timers. He was known for his Democratic politicking for local and state government, and ran for Twin Mountain selectman for several years, coming close to a win once or twice. The outdoors brought him much enjoyment and he often went fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed woodworking and local history. On Oct. 10, 1963, he married Delia A. Florick on Long Island. Family members include one daughter, Elizabeth D. Kane of Colchester, Vt.; a brother, Sylvester T. Kane and family of Uniondale, N.Y.; and many aunts, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Catherine M. Kane, June 24, 1973; his wife Delia, April 11, 1998; his mother Ann, June 27, 1987, and his father Sylvester, Aug. 8, 1999. Following cremation, a memorial visiting hour will be held Saturday morning, Aug. 24, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster, N.H. , 75, died peacefully surrounded by his family, Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. The son of Charles and Hilda (Lamond) Noyes, he was born Sept. 17, 1926 in Kirby. In his childhood during the Great Depression, Ed lived with the Stanton family in Danville, where he developed a deep and abiding work ethic which was an inspiration to all who knew him. Ed served in and loved the U.S. Navy, joining at the early age of 16. He was stationed on the USS Astoria (CL90) in the South Pacific Theatre, serving as helmsman. A particular remembrance of this was piloting the light cruiser in the typhoon off Lauzon. He was honorably discharged in May 1946. Edwin later met Ramona Florence Letourneau, also of St. Johnsbury. They shared a loving marriage of 55 years. From this marriage they were blessed with two sons, Jeffrey E. Noyes and Jay C. Noyes. Ed worked in construction throughout his life and developed a special aptitude for metal fabrication. These skills brought him to New York City; Boston; Hartford, Conn.; and Portland, Maine, where he was involved in the construction of skyscrapers. Ed loved hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, nature, berrying, gardening and sugaring. He was the consummate Vermonter. He was a member of VAST and the NRA. Ed believed he had lived a full and exciting life. He marveled that he had had the opportunity to experience life from the horse and buggy era of his childhood and to witness the start of a new millennium. Ed is survived by his loving wife, Ramona (Letourneau) Noyes of St. Johnsbury; two sons, Jeffrey Noyes and wife Barbara Jewett Noyes and sons Lawson, Connor and Chandler of Shelburne, and Jay Noyes of Richmond and children Beth Noyes of St. Johnsbury and Aaron Noyes of Richmond; two sisters, Edith Noyes of Keene, N.H., and Ruth Demage of Stroudsburg, Pa.; a brother, Richard Noyes of Meriden, Conn.; extended family including Thomas and Gracia Letourneau of Danville, Andrew J. and Lorraine Letourneau of Hooksett, N.H., and Lorraine Marcotte of Danville; great-niece and -nephew Alberta and Larry King of St. Johnsbury; a special nephew, Norman Coons of Sutton; and many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, and great-great-nieces and -nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Margaret and husband Richard Coons, Irene and husband John Bendotte, Velma King, and Elizabeth Micks; six brothers, Harry, Donald, Archie, Nelson, Charles, and an infant brother; and extended family members including Frank Marcotte and Stella (Letourneau) and Elton J. She raised her family in Fredericksburg, Va., where she was an artist, antiques dealer and social worker. She retired to Paisley, where she enjoyed the beach, her art, archaeology books and her many friends. For the past six months, she lived with her daughter in Allen, Texas. , 93, of Highland Avenue, North Troy, passed away in Newport, Friday, Aug. 23, 2002. She was born in St. Emilie, Province of Quebec, Feb. 8, 1909, the daughter of Rodolph and Louisia (Gravel) Robillard. On June 26, 1928, Imelda married Albert Beaudry, who predeceased her. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in North Troy and enjoyed cooking for the church. She had a green thumb and had many plants and flowers. She was an independent woman who loved life and was very energetic. She liked family gatherings and especially being with the younger ones. She loved her home, which was built by her husband Albert with her help, which they enjoyed for 37 years. Imelda is survived by her children, Jeanine Kennison of Newport, Roseanne Brouillard of Westfield, Mass., Florence Lantagne and her husband Larry of Derby, Robert Beaudry and his wife Pat of North Troy, and Lorraine Starr and her husband Durward of North Troy; her daughter-in-law, Roseanne Beaudry of Jay; her sister-in-law, Anita Robillard of New Hampshire; nieces and nephews; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Gerard, and by one brother and five sisters. , 89, of North Danville, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, went home to be with her Lord, Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. The daughter of Telesphore and Mary (St. James) Petit, Aurora was born Nov. 21, 1912, in Coventry, Vt. As a young girl, she went to school in Grand Line, located in Canada. In her teen years, she attended Lyndon Institute, then worked for a short time for actress Helen Gahagan in New York City, before continuing her education at Fitchburg Academy in Massachusetts, graduating in 1933. She then worked for a Dr. Baum in the Boston area while attending Providence Bible Institute. After moving back to Vermont, Aurora dated and then married Kenneth F. Dwyer of Sheffield on July 10, 1936, in Keesville, N.Y. The couple first resided in Coventry, moving in that same year to a farm in Sheffield, Vt. While there, Aurora was a Sunday School teacher at the Sheffield Church. In 1952, the Dwyers purchased the Goss Hollow Farm in St. Johnsbury, which they farmed for 12 years before moving to their present home, The Pines Farm on the North Danville Road, in 1964. Aurora attended North Danville Baptist Church for many years, and also attended Union Baptist Church in St. Johnsbury. She was an active member of the Goss Hollow Homemakers, at one time holding the position of secretary/treasurer. She was known for many special talents, including creating beautiful quilts, crocheting, latch-hook rug making and embroidery, along with cooking the best pancakes, doughnuts and baking powder biscuits from scratch. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Leo Petit, Laurier Petit and Moody Petit; two sisters, Leona (Petit) Percy and Philomene (Petit) Calderwood; and parents-in-law, George and Nellie Dwyer. , 80, of South Burlington, died peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at the Vermont Respite House, surrounded by her beloved family, after a courageous battle with leukemia. She had just celebrated her 80th birthday. Mariafranca Morselli was born in Milan, Italy, in 1922. In 1946, she received her doctoral degree in natural sciences and biology from the University of Milan in Italy. From 1947 to 1949 she taught at Quincy College in Quincy, Ill., in the Department of Biology, returning to Italy in 1949. In 1956 she moved permanently to the United States with her husband and daughters Olga and Giovanna. She was appointed research associate with the Bronx Botanical Garden in New York. Her youngest daughter Francesca was born in the States during this period. In 1964 the family moved to Vermont and she joined the maple research team in the botany department at the University of Vermont, eventually becoming research professor and director of the Maple Research Laboratories on campus. In May 1988, Dr. Morselli retired with the title of research professor emerita, continuing as a consultant on maple science and maple technology, and on women in science. Dr. Morselli achieved national and international recognition in the field of sugar maple research. Her basic and applied research and teaching at the University of Vermont centered on the physiology, anatomy and tissue culture of the sugar maple, the biochemistry and microbiology of maple sap, and the chemistry and adulteration of maple syrup. Her research, in association with the Proctor Maple Research Center and the USDA Forest Service, considerably helped the maple syrup industry to improve methods and efficiency of maple syrup production and the quality of maple products. Dr. Morselli offered research opportunities to a large number of staff and students, and participated in activities that improved education at all levels and provided career counseling for women in the sciences. Dr. Morselli published and lectured extensively in sugar maple science, technology, and environmental issues, here and abroad. She was a member of many professional associations and the recipient of a number of prestigious awards. In 1983, she received the award for Outstanding Research by the North American Maple Syrup Council, and in 1988 she was the first female recipient of both the Maple Syrup Producer of the Year Award by the Vermont Maple Industry Council, and the Research Service Award by the International Maple Syrup Institute. In 1991, she was the first woman inducted into the National Maple Museum Hall of Fame. In 1990, she was elected a Fellow of the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. In her other career as a volunteer, Dr. Morselli was a member of many civic and women's associations, receiving honors and named awards for her dedication and services. In 1985, Burlington Professional Women honored her as one of "Vermont's Most Exciting Women." She actively participated as an officer of the Vermont and Burlington chapters of the American Association of University Women. She was also a member of the boards of the Vermont and Burlington chapters of the League of Women Voters. Dr. Morselli was active as advocacy chair for the Vermont Network for the Gifted. She was appointed by Gov. Howard Dean to the Vermont Developmental Disabilities Council, the Advisory Council of the Governor's Commission on Women, and the Affirmative Action Council. About her appointment, Gov. Dean said, "she's a tremendous asset. I recognize her important efforts to advance women in the field of science." She was a tireless advocate for people with disabilities, especially children. In recognition of her commitment to the role of women in academia, friends, students and colleagues at the University of Vermont established the Mariafranca Morselli Leadership Award upon her retirement. The award is given yearly to an undergraduate woman who has made special contributions as a scholar, and in advancing equity for women in general and/or specifically women in science at the University of Vermont. In June, the University's Center for Research on Vermont awarded her its first Lifetime Achievement Award for "her enduring contributions to research vital to the state and citizens of Vermont." "Mariafranca Morselli is an inspiration to us all," said Dr. Paul Eschholz, the center's director. In 1998, the United States Senate paid tribute to Dr. Morselli. Sen. Patrick Leahy honored her by saying, "She never slows down. I applaud her tireless efforts to improve the world in which we live." On learning about her illness, the Vermont Legislature honored her with a Joint Resolution in 2002, citing her for her "extraordinary life's achievements." Throughout her career and life, she never failed to stay down-to-earth, practical, and remarkably generous to her many students and causes. A role model to so many in her life, Mariafranca continued to inspire all who knew her during her eight-month illness with leukemia. A former student and friend wrote to her, "when I get around to dying, I hope I can approach it as directly and openly as you do, grateful for the richness of a life lived fully and with joy." Dr. Morselli is survived by her friend and husband, Mario Morselli; her beloved daughters, Olga Morselli Compton and partner Daniele Ferrari of Milan, Italy, Giovanna Peebles and husband David of Montpelier, and Francesca Morselli Sinnott and husband David of Bermuda; her beloved grandchildren, Joshua Neudorfer and wife Anne, Stirling, Skye and Cameron Peebles, and Olivia Sinnott; and one great-granddaughter, Hannah Neudorfer. A memorial service to celebrate Mariafranca will be held at the University of Vermont's Ira Allen Chapel, Thursday, Aug. 29 at 10 a.m. A private interment will be held at the Morselli family crypt in Varese, Italy, in the fall. , 93, of the Lane House, 43 Cottage St., Littleton, N.H., died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at Littleton Regional Hospital. She was born in Dalton, N.H., Jan. 10, 1909, the daughter of Joseph and Rosalie (Pilotte) Landry. She attended schools in Whitefield, N.H., and lived in Dalton for many years before moving to Littleton. Mrs. Belmore was employed by the Connors and Hoffman Shoe Company, and retired from Profile Cleaners of Littleton. She enjoyed playing cards, walking and spending time with her family, friends and neighbors. She was a communicant of the St. Rose of Lima Church. She is survived by two daughters, Lorraine Foster of Whitefield, and Corinne Belmore of Littleton; two sons, Donald and John Belmore, both of Littleton; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Emily Matthew of Dalton; two brothers, Thomas and Phillip Landry, both of Dalton; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Edmond Belmore, in 1956; a son, Larry Belmore, in 1985; and a grandson, Jason Belmore, in 1998; two sisters, Zepherine Hastings and Emma Leonard; and three brothers, Charles, Frederick and Albert Landry. , 91, a resident of the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bennington, Vt., died Saturday Morning, Aug. 24, 2002, following a long illness. She was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Sept. 12, 1910, and was the daughter of the late Peter and Vica Michelsen. She received her education in Denmark and was a graduate of the School of Art in Odense, Denmark. Mrs. Rasmussen was an accomplished artist and had several shows over the years. She married Einar L. Rasmussen, Dec. 23, 1936, in Copenhagen. Mr. Rasmussen died Sept. 16, 1990. The Rasmussens lived in Japan from 1937 until 1945, and then moved back to Denmark. They moved to the United States in 1949. The family moved to St. Johnsbury in 1975, and then to Shaftsbury, Vt., in 1986. She had belonged to various art clubs and guilds over the years, including the Southern Vermont Artists in Manchester, Vt. Mrs. Rasmussen was also a former member of the St. Johnsbury Women's Club and the Green Acres Home Demonstration Club. Mrs. Rasmussen is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Birgit and Joseph Talbot of Shaftsbury; grandchildren, Jeffrey and Anna Talbot, Deborah Talbot, Jacqueline and James Tenneyson, and Daniel and Brenna Talbot; seven great-grandchildren; and one niece in Denmark. She was predeceased by one sister, Ellen Michelsen. A service to celebrate her life will be held Friday, Aug. 30, at 1 p.m., at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Shaftsbury, with the Rev. David Uzupan officiating. There are no calling hours scheduled. Interment will take place privately. , 75, of Dancer Farm, Littleton Road, Whitefield, N.H., died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster. He was born July 19, 1927, in Mineola, N.Y., the son of Edward Thomas and Louise Mary (Keefe) Kearney. Formerly of New York and Connecticut, Mr. Kearney attended Portsmouth Abbey School, graduating in 1945, and Brown University, graduating in 1950. After a tour in the U.S. Marines, he worked in radio for a time and then became an agent for figures in the sports and entertainment world. For the past 40 years he operated a horse farm, Dancer Farm, where he trained jumpers and which was one of the satellite farms for the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation. Family members include two children, Thomas D. Kearney of Portland, Ore., and Siobhan Kathleen Rehwoldt Barone of Mason, Ohio; two grandchildren; five brothers, Pierce K. Kearney of Washington, Conn., the Rev. Alan D. Kearney, OSB, of Portsmouth, R.I., Gerald A. Kearney of Temple City, Calif., David Q. Kearney of Newfane, and Andrew F. Kearney of Teddington, England; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Louise Kearney. , 76, of Littleton, beloved wife and mother, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at her lifelong residence, following a long illness. She was born in Littleton, May 5, 1926, the daughter of Walter and Emily (Cushing) Glode. She worked at MacLeod's Store as well as New England Telephone until starting her family. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who loved to bake and cook for her family and friends. She was a foster mother and member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary for 35 years. She was also a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Leo Laflamme; two daughters, Ann Laflamme-James and husband John of Littleton, and Yvonne Clark and husband Rob and children Emily and Aaron, all of Littleton; a son, Joseph Laflamme of Wakefield, Mass.; a brother, Walter Glode of Deland, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. 75, of Williams Street, Lancaster, N.H., died peacefully at his home Thursday morning, Aug. 29, 2002, after a long illness. Mr. Evans was born in Lancaster, April 5, 1927, the son of Roger F. and Etta L. (Ramsdell) Evans. Bum was a lifetime resident of Lancaster, graduating from Lancaster Academy in 1946. For a short time he served in the U.S. Navy. On June 18, 1948 he married Peggy Kay of Lancaster. He was best known for his 58 years of employment at the former Evans Market in Lancaster. Many present and former Lancaster residents will remember him fondly for his years of service behind the counter wearing his white apron. He also enjoyed woodworking and gardening, but his greatest enjoyment was time spent with his children and grandchildren, always attending their plays and sporting events. Family members include his wife Peggy of Lancaster; three children, Marsha E. Gingue of Lancaster, Gary M. Evans of Boscawen, and Lori E. Spencer of Lancaster; a brother, Samuel Evans of Lancaster; three sisters, Priscilla Truchon of Whitefield, Mary Jane Falkenham of Lancaster, and Sylvia Aldrich of Lancaster; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Born Jan. 28, 1912, in Gregory, S.D., she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Barbara (Steinke) Reynolds, and formerly resided in Glens Falls, N.Y., for 23 years. She had worked for the General Electric Company in Schenectady and Fort Edward, N.Y., for 20 years prior to her retirement. She was a member of the Church of St. Peter. She was predeceased by 16 siblings, including brothers Paul and Roscoe Reynolds, her twin brother Frank Reynolds, and a sister, Margaret Grapes. She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Montgomery of Schenectady, Joan Lowell of Henrietta, N.Y., and Sally Barker of Saratoga Springs; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. , 52, of 29 Scott Road, Benton, N.H. died Thursday Aug. 29, 2002, at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, N.H. She was born February 14, 1950, in Woodsville, the daughter of Wilson Joseph Carle and Geraldine (Millette) Carle. She was a graduate of Woodsville High School. Valerie lived in Arizona for several years before returning to the area in 1996. She was a manager for the Subway sandwich shop in Woodsville. Valerie was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 20 in Woodsville. She was predeceased by her parents, Geraldine (Millette) Carle and Wilson Joseph Carle; her sister, Jackie Preston; and a loving niece, Erika Weeks.
