, 89, formerly of Peacham and most recently of Danville, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville after a brief illness. She was born in Bristol, Conn., Aug. 16, 1912, a daughter of John Frederick and Lucretia B. (Gardner) Gearing. She graduated from high school in Bristol, and from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. She married Everett Charles White July 6, 1935, and they moved to Peacham in October 1955. He predeceased her Oct. 26, 1986. Mrs. White was a member of the Danville Congregational Church and a former member of the Peacham Congregational Church, where she had been active in the church choir. She was also active in many Peacham Village organizations. In Connecticut during World War II Grace was a Red Cross "Gray Lady" in an army hospital. During the 1950s she worked as the program director of the Bristol, Conn. Girls Club and was very active in many youth groups. Mrs. White enjoyed art, music, sports, especially swimming, dancing, and many different social activities. She and her husband enjoyed the friendship of people from all over the country. They spent numerous years wintering and camping in Florida. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia (White) Kavalski of New Britain, Conn.; two sons, Stephen C. White and wife Marcia of Peacham, and David N. "Buck" White and wife Mary of Barnet; eight grandchildren, Roni Grace Armstrong of Brooklyn, N.Y., Douglas W. White of Bath, N.H., Daniel M. White of Danville, Richard E. White of Danville, Kevin N. White of Wells River, Darren H. White of Danville, Terence L. White of Wells River, and Jeremy S. White of Peacham; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary (Byrd) Gearing of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two great-grandchildren, Randy Michael White and Nicole Rae White; three brothers, John Lester, Donald Frederick and Philip James Gearing; and a sister, Ethel Gearing Case. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held in Peacham in mid-August, and a notice will be published in The Caledonian-Record at that time. , 78, of Head of Pond Road, Island Pond, passed away at her home Friday, June 28, 2002. She was born in Island Pond, Nov. 22, 1923, the daughter of Leo and Marie (Turgeon) Steady. Francelia was a piano teacher at the Mary Hudson School of Music in New Hampshire. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Island Pond, where she played the organ and sang in the choir. She loved her grandchildren and loved to travel. On Aug. 1, 1959, Francelia married Frederick E. Doucette Sr., who survives her. She is also survived by her sons, Frederick E. Doucette Jr. and wife JoAnne of Monkton, Vt., and Jeffrey Leo Doucette and wife Jennie of High Point, N.C.; her grandchildren, Amy, Andrew, Graham, Reagan and Renee; her brothers, Frank Steady of Petaluma, Calif., Leo Steady of Washington, and John Steady and wife Jane of South Glenns Falls, N.Y.; her sister, Marie Basil and husband Joseph of Petaluma, Calif.; her daughter-in-law, Ethel Steady of Elkton, Md.; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, David Steady; a granddaughter, Kristina Steady; and a sister, Gloria Steady. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, July 2, at 11 a.m., at St. James Parish Hall in Island Pond, with the Rev. Paul Houde officiating. 62, of Burlington, formerly of Sheffield, died Sunday, June 30, 2002 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. He was born March 8, 1940 in Marlboro, Mass., the son of Albert and Evelyn (McLean) Brown. He was raised in Sheffield by Ralph and Alberta Bishop after his mother's illness and death. He was a graduate of Lyndon Institute, Class of 1959. Bob worked as a machinist at Vermont Tap & Die in Lyndonville for many years. Survivors include his son, Paul Brown and wife Janice of Virginia Beach, Va.; two daughters, Janet Brown and husband Mike DeCamp of Putney, Vt., and Susan Brown of Denali Park, Alaska; three grandchildren; his companion, Joan Brown of Burlington; and four sisters, Virginia Ramalho, Erma Conroy, Edna Luysterborghs, and Marion Conroy. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy (Brooks) Brown, in 1985; his brother, Earl Brown; and a sister, Rose Smith. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 5, at 11 a.m., at the Guibord Funeral Home. , 82, of Westmore, passed away peacefully Thursday, June 27, 2002 in Newport, with her grandchildren, Ron and Kathy Holmes, at her side. She was born in Westmore, the 12th child of Isaac and Eva Fairbrother Rash, on Oct. 25, 1919. Mrs. Roberts was a founding member of the Westmore Ladies Aid Society. After moving to Springfield, Vt., she belonged to the Home Demonstration Club of Windsor County and the Wednesday Nighter's Club, where she served several terms as an officer. She volunteered for several organizations, including the Girl Scouts, the North Springfield Baptist Church, and the Kurn Hatten School for Girls. She enjoyed her summers fishing on Lake Willoughby and playing Scrabble with her family and special friend Mabel Quimby Wharton. Mrs. Roberts enjoyed cooking, gardening, and she knitted wonderful sweaters and mittens. Her husband, George Merle Roberts, preceded her in death. She is survived by three children, Barbara Roberts-Perkins of Storrs, Conn., Charles J. Roberts of Barton, Vt., and Nancy Roberts-Schweitzer of Lebanon, Conn.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews. She was a "second mom" to her grandchildren Ron and Kathy Holmes, and a niece, Nancy Perkins Downs. Her special friends, Stephanie Oscarson and Elmira Allen of Springfield, Vt., will also sadly miss her. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, at 10 a.m., at the Westmore Community Church in Westmore. Graveside interment will follow, with a short reception at the Westmore Community Hall. , 62, of Whippoorwill Road, Thetford, died Monday, July 1, 2002 in Newport. He was born Jan. 1, 1940 in Pomponoosuc, Vt., a son of Harold and Katherine (Goodell) Slack. He was educated in Thetford schools and was a graduate of Thetford Academy and Vermont Technical College. He had been employed in road construction for Leonard Cook in Norwich. For the past 38 years he was a truck driver for Miller Concrete, Tilcon, and Carroll Concrete, working from the Bradford and West Lebanon, N.H., locations. Bruce enjoyed camping at Willowood Campground at Lake Willoughby, fishing, cooking, reading and family gatherings. He was an active participant in Thetford community life, and was well-known for sponsoring church and community fund-raising dinners. His memberships included the Timothy Frost Methodist Church, where he had served as a trustee. He was president of the Thetford Center Community Association and the Evergreen Rest Cemetery Association, and was a member of the Thetford Volunteer Fire Department from 1979-1995. He had served as fire department captain, chair of the annual fire department barbecue, and president of the department board of trustees. Survivors include his wife Beverly, whom he married Dec. 7, 1984; her children, Elwyn Brooks of Orford, N.H., Carolyn Kanalos of Tewksbury, Mass., and Jeffrey Brooks of Florence, S.C.; five granddaughters; a sister, Janet Copp of Victory; a brother, Robert Slack of East Thetford; and several nieces and nephews. Other family members include a stepson, Richard Slack of North Thetford; his daughter, Amy Brown of Claremont, N.H.; and children, Donald Crowley, who is in the U.S. Air Force, Jeffrey Crowley of East Thetford, and Cindy Wiengand of Quechee, Vt. , 86, of Lancaster, died Wednesday morning, July 3, 2002, at Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster. Mrs. Barrows was born in Berlin on April 14, 1916, the daughter of William and Gladys (Estes) Rines. Raised in Berlin, she was a graduate of Berlin High School and worked as a bookkeeper for Labanon's Men's Store, Berlin. Eventually moving to Lancaster, she and her husband, Tom, owned and operated the Lancaster Diner for many years. She enjoyed painting and created many beautiful works of art. She has been a resident of the Coos County Nursing Home, Berlin, since 1995. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Berlin, and the Business and Professional Women, Lancaster. Family member include her husband, Thomas B. Barrows Sr., of Lancaster; a son, Thomas B. Barrows Jr. of Big Lake, Alaska; a daughter, Timonee L. Therrien, he preceded her in death Jan. 11, 1996. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church. Marie is survived by four children, Richard A. , 82, of Hodge Hill Road, Lisbon, N.H., died Tuesday, July 2, 2002 at Littleton Regional Hospital in Littleton. Clifford was born Nov. 8, 1919, in North Haverhill, N.H., the son of Everett F. and Dorothy E. (Meader) Sawyer, at the family farm. He graduated from Haverhill Academy in 1937. He served in the U.S. Army's 76th Infantry during World War II, during which he was wounded in France. Upon returning to northern New Hampshire he was employed by several local trucking companies until his retirement in 1980. He came out of retirement and worked for the next 15 years, full- and part-time, for Sugar Hill Gardens in Sugar Hill. Mr. Sawyer was a leader in the Ammonoosuc 4-H Club for nine years, a member of the Lisbon Stump Jumpers snowmobile club for more than 20 years, and a member of the Lisbon Lions Club for many years. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, having fished from the Atlantic Ocean to the rivers of Alaska. He was an avid snowmobiler, gardener, bird watcher and photographer. In his younger days he also enjoyed working with and riding horses. He traveled after retiring, taking trips to Alaska, Canada and the western United States. Surviving relatives include two children, Larry C. Sawyer and wife Judith of Sugar Hill, and Lyla C. Sawyer and companion David Holland of Broken Arrow, Okla.; two brothers, Everett F. Sawyer of North Haverhill, and Merrill C. "Tom" Sawyer of Bath, N.H.; a sister, Carolyn Grass of Franconia, N.H.; and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours. , 74, a longtime Hardwick resident, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington. He was born April 19, 1928, in Hardwick, the son of Albert J. and Lydia (Brochu) Renaud. As a young child he lived on Center Road and attended Hardwick Center public schools. On June 28, 1952, he married Mary Theresa Sullivan at St. Norbert's Catholic Church in Hardwick. Fido entered the U.S. Navy on April 4, 1946. He served his country throughout the United States and received a World War II Victory Medal for his efforts. Seaman First Class Fidelle Renaud was honorably discharged Feb. 3, 1948. On Feb. 4, 1948, he entered inactive naval service and was honorably discharged Feb. 3, 1953. In his earlier years he worked on the family farm, and joined the family in their pulp business. He was later employed by the Mt. Mansfield Company in Stowe for more than 25 years, retiring in the mid-1990s. Fido was a member of St. Norbert's Catholic Church; a life member of the Bronson Council Knights of Columbus; a 50-year member of the American Legion Post 7, all in Hardwick; as well as a member of the National Rifle Association. He was an avid fisherman. Other enjoyments include hunting, gardening and watching the Red Sox. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mary; a foster son, Peter Holbrook and wife Penny and their children Adam, Justin and Cassi, all of Hardwick; a sister, Theresa Ferland of Hardwick; six brothers, L. Phillip Renaud of Hardwick, Raymond Renaud of Concord, Lucien Renaud of Morrisville, Clem Renaud of Garland, Texas, Ivan Renaud of Hardwick, and Albert Renaud Jr. of Thetford Mines, Canada; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Jean Sulliman. , 61, a lifelong resident of Groton, died Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, N.H., after a brief illness. She was born June 15, 1941, in St. Johnsbury, a daughter of Philip T. and Nellie M. (Roberts) White. She was a 1959 graduate of Groton High School. Jackie was well-known for her love of animals and people. She cared for and sold exotic cats and birds, also keeping a loving dog or two close by. She was a caregiver by nature and spent her time caring for the elderly and infirm of the Groton area. She was an avid active member of the Groton United Methodist Church. She married Donald Boyce on June 20, 1959. On Sept. 29, 1967, she married Ralph J. Hatch, and together they built a construction business and shared a love of outdoor sports and automobile racing. On Jan. 6, 2002, she married Raymond Massey. Jackie was predeceased by her parents, her second husband, Ralph Hatch, Nov. 10, 1999; and a son, Stephen Paul Hatch, Dec. 28, 1991. , 77, of Route 102, Guildhall, died Friday July 6, 2002, at his home after a long illness. Mr. McGrath was born in Springfield, Mass., July 30, 1924, the son of Arthur F. and Gertrude (Boucher) McGrath. He was a 1942 graduate of Tech High School, Springfield, Mass., and a 1943 graduate of Williston Academy, East Hampton. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy as a gunner's mate on gun crews that boarded merchant ships in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre, the Atlantic Theatre, and the Philippine Liberation. In 1950 he graduated from Yale University, and was proprietor of McGrath Electrical Company, Springfield, Mass., for 25 years. In 1982 he moved to Guildhall and for 17 years operated McGrath's Antique Lamp Shop. He served as a Guildhall Selectman for 12 years and was former zoning administrator. He was a Communicant of All Saints Church, Lancaster, and a member of the Men of St. Joseph. Family members include a son, Arthur F. McGrath III of Guildhall; and a first cousin, Rosalie McGraw of Lancaster. He was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy Dunlap and Rayma McGrath. , 80, of Lancaster, died Saturday evening, July 6, 2002, at a local nursing facility after a period of declining health. Born in Lancaster Nov. 9, 1921, she was the daughter of Albert J. and Mildred (Knight) Kenney. She was a graduate of Lancaster Academy in 1939 and the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1943. She continued her education in post graduate courses at Margaret Hague Maternity Clinic in New Jersey, and in public health nursing at Simmons College, Yale University, John Mahoney Training Center Department of Health in New York City, Boston University, Plymouth State, University of Vermont, St. Anselms College and University of New Hampshire. She held professional society memberships in the American Nurses Association and the New Hampshire Nurses Association. Her professional experiences include assistant nursing arts instructor and obstetrical supervisor at Mary Hitchcock in Hanover, staff nurse at Concord VNA, and public health nurse and consultant in public health nursing for the state of New Hampshire for 30 years. She received Woman of the Year Award as a member of the New Hampshire Federation of Business and Professional Women's Club. Miss Kenney served on many committees of hospital and nursing organizations. She was the recipient of the White Mountain Community Service Award as a consultant to six home health agencies covering the northern one-third of the state. She was also recognized for her wartime contribution as an instructor for members of the U.S. Cadet Nursing Corps, and the Lancaster Ambulance Corps recognized her for 1,000 hours of in-call service. Eleanor was honored by Governor Shaheen in 1997 as an outstanding adult volunteer in Coos County, logging 4,000 hours of service at Weeks Memorial Hospital, where she was recognized for her humor, compassion, humility and sense of service. Her true giving spirit was most evident in her devotion and love for her family. She was a Communicant of All Saints Church and a former parish council member. Surviving family members include her brother, Dean Kenney of Voorheesville, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. William (Mary) Christy of Manchester, N.H.; and nieces and nephews. , 89, of Morrison Nursing Home in Whitefield, passed away Monday, July 1, 2002, within the facility, after a long illness. She was born July 1, 1913, in Woodsville, N.H., a daughter of James M. and Ethel (Sawyer) Spinney. Luvia graduated from Woodsville High School. She was employed several years at H.O. Taylor automotive sales as an administrative office clerk. She was a private secretary to the late Ambassador Hill in Littleton, and also administrative secretary for the Littleton High School, after which she retired and moved to Lady Lake, Fla., where she resided for over 20 years before moving back to the North Country. Surviving family members include three sons, Richard W. Smith of Littleton, David R. Smith of Whitefield, and Raymond J. 81, of Lyndonville and Newark, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., following a brief battle with cancer. The son of the late Thomas and Beatrice (Walter) McFarland, Mac was born June 22, 1921, in Newark. He served in the U.S. Army, and he was a roofer, working for Rodd Roofing for many years. Mac lived for a short while in California. He was a member of the VFW in Lyndonville, the NRA, and Clampers in California. He enjoyed sugaring, hunting, fishing and feeding the birds. Mac is survived by two sons, Thomas McFarland and wife Sally of Lyndonville, and Wendell A. McFarland of Avery, Calif.; a step-son, Scott Manning of Lyndonville; two step-daughters, Margaret Deos and husband Andre of Lyndonville, and Tina Buritt and husband Robert of Charlotte; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Catherine McFarland and Elizabeth Ann Wright; three brothers, Neil, Dick and Hugh "Pat"; and three sisters, Blanche Corivieau, Lillian Hinman and Joyce LaForge. A memorial service will be held Thursday evening, July 11, at 7 p.m., at Guibord Funeral Home, located on the corner of Main and Center streets in Lyndonville. He married Dorine Gilbert, and he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of North Congregational Church and the St. Johnsbury VFW. She was born July 19, 1917 in Littleton, a daughter of Guy and Emma (Allard) Bixby. Florence was a lifelong resident of the Littleton area. She attended schools here, and in 1937 married her late husband, Edgar Morrissette. She worked for the Saranac Glove Company of Littleton. As an active homemaker she enjoyed baking, crocheting and knitting. Surviving family consists of one daughter, Marie Lyndes and husband David of Littleton; one grandson, James Mitchell and wife Laurie of Springvale, Maine; one granddaughter, Cathleen Bedor and husband Steven of Littleton; and one great-grandson, Bradley Mitchell of Springvale, Maine. , 74, of Gilman, died Tuesday morning, July 9, 2002, at Country Village Health Care Center, after a long illness. Mr. Sargent was born in North Troy, July 29, 1927, the son of Clarence D. and Pearle (Stannard) Sargent. He was raised in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. For a time he served overseas in the U.S. Army. He resided approximately 45 years in Gilman, working most of those years at Gilman Paper Company. He enjoyed hunting, brook fishing, and the camp he built on Miles Pond. He was a member of the Gilman Fire Department and the American Legion of Gilman. Family members include his wife, Betty Jane (Cutting) Sargent, of Gilman; a daughter, Juanita J. Sargent of Colorado; a sister, Roberta Frazier of Montpelier; and two granddaughters, Angela Drew and Megan Bresnahan. He was predeceased by a daughter, Bonnie H. Drew, in 1987; and a son, Scott H. Sargent, in 2000. A visiting hour will be held Thursday afternoon, July 11, from 2 to 3 p.m., at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster. A service will immediately follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. 68, of St. Johnsbury, died at home Wednesday evening, July 10, 2002. Born in Cranston, R.I., March 8, 1934, he was the son of Ernest and Anne (McLaughlin) Billion. Mick moved here from Warwick, R.I., in January of 1996, and made his home with his sister and her husband, Esther and George Everly, at 1004 Sylvain Road. His dream was to join the U.S. Navy. However, medical reasons forced an early discharge. Veterans' affairs remained an important part of his life; he was active in the Shields American Legion Post in Warwick, and served here as past commander of American Legion Post 30 in Lyndon and later as Caledonia district commander. Besides his dear sister, he is survived by a niece, Judith, and a nephew, Thaddeus. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, July 15, at 10 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist Church. Visiting hours will be held at the Sayles Funeral Home, Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., and will conclude with a prayer service. He was born May 14, 1932, in Woodsville, son of the late Milledge and Mary Miller Thompson Sr. He graduated from Bethlehem High School in 1950. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Air Force for four years. Upon returning to New Hampshire, he worked for the New Hampshire Department of Transportation for 30 years in various capacities. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling and restoration of his classic autos, gardening and landscaping with his many "toys" (equipment), and generating many creations with wood. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Maud (Lang) Thompson of Littleton; three children, Gregory A. Thompson and wife Shari of Littleton, Wanda Thompson McAlevey and husband Joseph of Sandown, N.H., and Alex R. Mary enjoyed her family and friends, visiting the ocean and singing karaoke. She is survived by three children, Scott Chilafoe of Littleton, and Tyler Rogers and Noel Rogers; a sister, Ginger Rogers of Newbury, Mass., and a brother, Roy Rogers of Alton Bay, N.H. , 96, of Hanover, N.H., died Thursday, July 11, 2002, in East Plainfield, N.H., at the home of his nephew, following a brief illness. He was born May 24, 1906, in Barton, Vt., the son of Earl and Lorinda Rose (Grimes) Swett. When he was 15 years old he left home and went to work in Lyndonville for the Boston & Maine railroads. He stayed there for two years, and then left Vermont for Connecticut, where he worked on the U.S. Government Gypsy Moth Program for areas including Connecticut, New York and western Vermont. After a few years he left for Newark, N.J., where he worked for a company making toilet accessories such as brushes, combs, fingernail clippers and files. He also worked for a company making doors and window frames, and other small jobs. In 1935 he came to Hanover, N.H., and worked at the grist mill and Dartmouth College. In 1939, he worked for the state of Vermont rebuilding roads and bridges after the 1939 floods. In 1942 he enlisted in the U. S. Army and served with the 79th Division 312th Field Artillery Battalion in Germany and France until his discharge in 1945. Coming back to Vermont, he worked for the Canadian-Pacific Railroad. In 1948, he went back to Hanover to work for the Manchester Gulf Station, where he retired in 1983 after 35 years of service. The station was refurbished into a mini-mart where he continued to work for many more years on a part-time basis. Several nephews, nieces, and great-nephews and great-nieces survive him, including nephews Leslie Ham of Sheffield, Vt., and Clayton Ham of Newark, Vt. He was predeceased by two sisters, Katherine May and Marion Myrtle; and two brothers, Wilmer Hazelton and Elmer Graydon. There will be no calling hours. Graveside services and burial will be held Tuesday, July 16, at 1 p.m., in the Hillside Cemetery of West Burke.

, 80, formerly of Calista Avenue, Lyndonville, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndon. She was born April 1, 1922, in Fords, N.J., the daughter of the late Alexander and Marie (Senquist) Bollman. On July 18, 1952 Gwen married William "Bill" Baumann. Gwen worked as a telephone operator for New Jersey Bell for many years. In 1985 she and her husband moved to Lyndonville from Woodbridge, N.J. She was very active in her church, St. Peter's Episcopal Mission in Lyndonville. An extremely honest and kindhearted person, she was a loving mother and grandmother, and was always willing to help those in need. Survivors include two sons, Thomas Uzar of Easthampton, Mass., and Jeffrey Baumann of San Francisco, Calif.; a daughter, Karen Reem and husband James and their daughter Samantha Reem of San Francisco; three brothers, Alexander Bollman of Wilcox, Ariz., Theodore Bollman of West Burke, and Thomas Bollman of Bethel, Vt.; two sisters, Marie Moresco of San Francisco, and Genevieve Panconi of Edison, N.J.; and nieces, nephews and her church family. She was predeceased by her husband, William Baumann, in 1995; and a sister, Virginia Allen. Friends are invited to call on the family Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. , 83, died peacefully at Applewood Villa in Madison, Wis., Friday, April 12, 2002. She was born July 11, 1918, in St. Johnsbury, the daughter of Joseph and Mabel Nolin. Gratia's life was devoted to her family. She lived in St. Johnsbury and Littleton, working for Sears Roebuck & Co. before marrying Ralph L. Roy on June 30, 1946. They lived in northern Illinois before moving in 1948 to Beloit, Wis., where she resided for many years. In retirement she lived in Rogers, Ark., and Bowling Green, Ky., before moving to Madison in 1999. She was a homemaker throughout her married life and was a wonderful cook, avid gardener and loving mother. She had an especially comforting manner and was loved by all who had the opportunity to know her. She is survived by her husband Ralph of Rogers, Ark.; two sons, William Roy and wife Suzanne of West Chester, Ohio, and Michael Roy of Madison, Wis.; two brothers, Regis Nolin and wife Joyce of East Dorset, Vt., and Charles Nolin of St. Johnsbury; three grandchildren, Kirsten Roy of Madison, Wis., and Maxwell and Alex Roy of West Chester, Ohio. , 78, died peacefully Monday, July 15, 2002, in Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin surrounded by his family. He was born in Walden Dec. 9, 1923, the son of the late Servand and Hosanna (Bessette) LeBlanc. He was married Oct. 27, 1943 in Hardwick to the former Pauline Guillette, who predeceased him June 19, 2002. Emmanuel owned and operated E & E Tire Co. in Burlington for 25 years, retiring in 1996. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. He was a 4th degree member of Knights of Columbus, Bronson Council in Hardwick, and belonged to the Knights of Columbus in Essex Junction at the time of his death. Dad will be remembered for his barbecues and the pranks he pulled at them. He enjoyed watching his family grow from his own children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and snowmobiling with his sons. Dad was always ready for a game of cards when anyone walked through the door. Emmanuel's family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the nurses and staff of Woodridge Nursing Home for all the care given to their father and the compassion and support shown to them. , 82, of Franconia, died at his Church Street home, Monday, July 15, 2002. He was born in Littleton June 27, 1920, the son of Bertram L. Herbert Sr. and Goldie Grace Hall, both of Franconia. He was raised in Franconia and was a graduate of Dow Academy, Class of 1939. Mr. Herbert served 26 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a chief master sergeant in 1967. He served during World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He received the Air Force Commendation Award in 1967. Upon retirement from the Air Force, he returned to Franconia and was employed at Franconia Notch State Park, and retired in 1985 as assistant superintendent. He was a member of the Burns Lodge of Littleton, Church of Christ in Franconia, and past member of the Lodge of Perfection, Wanatchee, Washington. Mr. Herbert was an accomplished skier and golfer. In 1936, he was among a group of Dow Academy skiers who gave a ski demonstration at Madison Square Garden. Every afternoon and evening the group skied on a specially constructed slope carpeted with crushed ice. That year he also won a Class A ranking among American downhill skiers. In 1993, at the age of 73, Mr. Herbert won the club championship at Lisbon Village Country Club. It was his second championship in three years. He was also a member of the Hole-in-One Club. Mr. Herbert was predeceased in 1994 by his wife of 50 years, Marcia Christian Herbert, and in 1956 by his son Mark. He is survived by his three children, Christopher Herbert of Manchester, N.H., Tracy Herbert of Houston, Texas, and Paula Herbert Strange of Franconia; four sisters, Lurlene Drew and Ruby Heath of Franconia, Rita Bialon of Manchester, and Leslie Spooner of Inverness, Fla.; three grandchildren, Sarah Herbert, and Mark and Christopher Strange; one step-grandchild, Joshua Buzza; and 21 nieces and nephews. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega and president of Mortar Board. From 1936-1940 Mary taught English at Milton High School. She was a charter member violinist of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. Mary Whitney married Harry Rowe, Aug. 28, 1940. From 1940 to 1946, Mary managed a boarding house, taught violin at UVM and cared for her first son while Harry was a medical student in Burlington and a medical officer in Germany. In 1946, Mary and Harry moved to Wells River to establish a busy medical practice in which she assumed the role of office manager, a position she maintained until 1999. She became active in the local church, taking on the leadership of the church choir and North Country Chorus and participating in various women's groups. She directed four Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, and taught music in local public schools and violin and piano lessons in her home. She participated in State Medical Auxiliary. Concurrently she managed her home and raised six children. Mary had a passion for choral music that spanned her lifetime. After joining the North Country Chorus in 1948, she became its director in 1951, a position she held for the next 50 years. During that time she led the group on six European choral tours and initiated, produced and directed the annual Madrigal Dinner, now in its 20th year. In 2001, she was recognized for her unique service to choral music in the region with the Lifetime Achievement Award from Choral Arts New England. In addition, Mary directed all levels of the choir at the Wells River Congregational Church for more than 50 years, taught all levels of music education in the Wells River public schools for 25 years, participated in the state and New England high school music festivals and regularly attended the national meetings of the American Choral Director's Association, of which she was a lifetime member. In 1992, Mary and Harry received the University of Vermont Alumni Achievement Award. She was recognized by the Vermont Council on the Arts in 1987 and was the first non-Rotarian to become a Paul Harris Fellow of the Woodsville-Wells River Rotary Club. She contributed an article to Vermont Life in 1951 on the community production of "The Pirates of Penzance;" a chapter to the book "A Vermont Scrapbook" in 1991; and was the subject, with Harry, of an article in Vermont Life in 2002. She is survived by her beloved husband, Dr. Harry M. Rowe; and their six children, David Rowe and Marjorie Berger of West Hartford, Conn., Betsy Waters of Amherst, Mass., Susan and Kevin Dalton of Acton, Mass., John and Linda Rowe of Fairview, N.C., Alan and Stephanie Rowe of St. Johnsbury, and Jane Rowe and Ronald Brown of New Britain, Conn.; 20 grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Alice Rowe of Peacham; cousin and caregiver Alice Adams of West Fairlee; cousins, Mary Ferguson of Dekalb, Ill., Rockwood and Marilyn Brown and Neal and Dorothy Brown of Billings, Mont., and Barbara Bixby of Freeland, Wash.; and many extended family members. A private service will be held Saturday, July 20. , 69, of 1685 Portola Ave., Livermore, Calif., died Friday, July 12, 2002, at the San Ramon Regional Hospital in San Ramon, Calif., after a period of failing health. She was born in Bethlehem, N.H., Aug. 20, 1932, the daughter of John P. White and Annabel Priest. Mrs. Smith was the widow of James D. Smith of Bristol, N.H., who died Aug. 21, 1980. She enjoyed bingo, golf, card games, children, traveling and her family. She was most recently employed as a nanny, caring for three children; she was revered more as their grandmother than their nanny. She is survived by two daughters, Pam Carter of Hercules, Calif., and Gayla Elliott of White River Junction, Vt.; a son, James M. 72, of St. Johnsbury, died at home, Saturday, July 20, 2002. He was born in Nashua, N.H., Feb. 20, 1930, the son of Daniel and Madeline (Murray) Driscoll. During the Korean Conflict he served his country in the U.S. Army. For over 35 years he worked for New England Telephone as an installer. He had many interests in the community, including the VFW (life member), American Legion and the Elks 1343, all in St. Johnsbury. Bob loved gardening, hunting and fishing, and he enjoyed the Wednesday night card group. On Oct. 18, 1952, he married Forrestine "Tina" Nelson, who survives him in St. Johnsbury. Survivors also include four daughters, Debra Driscoll-Taylor and husband Richard of Danville, Beth and husband Bob Bigelow of Lyndonville, Donna and husband Tom Brancheau of Snohomish, Wash., and Susan Driscoll-Woods and husband Paul of Lyndonville; a sister, Katherine Latourelle and daughter Mary Beth Trosian, both of Lyndonville; nine grandchildren, Michelle Taylor, Nathan Taylor, Jeni Bigelow, Danny Bigelow, Sean Driscoll, Erin Brancheau, Alex Brancheau, Evan Woods and Katie Buxton; and several nieces and nephews. , 68, of the Barre-Montpelier Road, Berlin, Vt., died Friday, July 19, 2002 at her home. Born Sept. 12, 1933 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Dorothy Lawrence. She attended Burlington Elementary School, Burlington High School and Williamstown High School. On July 20, 1952, she married Robert A. Miller at the Miller Homestead in Barre Town, where they made their home until 1979. Later, they moved to Lyndonville for several years before moving to their present home in Berlin. They were married for 50 years. A homemaker, she enjoyed gardening, reading and collecting glass slippers and teacups. Sylvia was a member of the Church of Christ of Montpelier, created monthly encouragement letters called "Hearts in Touch" to Sisters in Christ, and started a women's support group for dealing with chronic pain and illness through "Woman Centered" in Montpelier. She loved singing, was a member of the Barre Tones and Toastmasters of Central Vermont, and also entertained as "Birdie the Clown" at hospitals, nursing homes, and her grandchildren's birthday parties. Survivors include her husband Robert of Berlin; three daughters, Dorothy Miller and Randy Wade of Santa Barbara, Calif., Sally Black and husband Joven of Berlin, and Jane Benoit and husband Edmond of Barre Town; one son, Richard "Dick" Miller and wife Billie of Arcola, Ill.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Lawrence of Troy, N.Y., and Raymond Lawrence of Greensboro, N.C.; and nieces and nephews. , of Lyndonville, passed away Saturday, July 20, 2002 at her residence. She was born in Richmond, Vt., July 22, 1912, the daughter of the late Olin and Elizabeth (Maitland) Curler. She attended schools in Richmond and Burlington, and graduated from the University of Vermont, Class of 1934. On Aug. 1, 1938 she married Dennis E. Stevens, who predeceased her. She taught English and Latin at Richmond High School. During World War II she worked at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. In Lyndonville she was a bookkeeper at Tap & Die as well as bookkeeper for her husband's business, Edmund's Pharmacy. Lydia was active in many local organizations and especially enjoyed involvement in those that worked with children, such as the Village Improvement Society's Powers Park programs. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Lyndonville. She is survived by two daughters, Betty Meyer and husband Don of Cape Porpoise, Maine, and Claire Morrison and husband Harry of Lyndonville; two granddaughters, Anne and Jill Morrison of Lyndonville; two nieces, Patricia Rose of Charlotte, N.C., and Joyce Bienefeld of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a nephew, Luther Porter of Hinsdale, N.H.; and their families. , 79, of North Street, Island Pond, passed away in Newport, Monday, July 22, 2002. He was born in Island Pond, July 30, 1922, the son of James Emile and Albertine (Leclair) Caouette. Bertrand served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He worked as the branch manager for the Community National Bank in Island Pond. He was a life member of the Prisoners of War, a member of the American Legion Brighton Post 80, the Disabled American Veterans, a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Newport Gibbons Council 1157, and the former VFW Island Pond Random Post 2309. On Feb. 29, 1944, Bertrand married the former Margaret L. Etheze, who survives him. He is also survived by his sons, Thomas H. Caouette of Crownsville, Md., Theodore E. Caouette of Maidstone, Vt., and George E. Caouette of Holliston, Mass.; his brothers, Herbert Caouette of Island Pond, and Robert Caouette of Berlin, N.H.; his sisters, Priscilla Savoy of Wilder, Vt., and Irene Morand of Biddeford, Maine; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Everett was born in Barre May 10, 1941, the son of Everett E. and Esther (Berno) Rowe Sr. of McIndoe Falls. He was employed as a machine operator by D.C.I. in Lisbon for 15 years until May 2002 when illness forced him to retire. He was known to many as "Junior" or "Doonie." He loved his job at D.C.I. and the people he worked with. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the out-of-doors and family barbecues. 66, of 405 River Road, St. Johnsbury, died Monday, July 22, 2002, after a very sudden illness, in Newport. He was born in Marshfield, March 3, 1936, a son of George H. and Zerilla V. (Achilles) Foster. He graduated from Peacham Academy and entered the U.S. Air Force June 29, 1954, serving an extensive duty in Japan, and was discharged June 3, 1958, having attained the rank of staff sergeant. Mr. Foster later worked for Fairbanks Scales in St. Johnsbury for over 39 years as a welder and inspector, retiring in 2000. He was a member of the United Electrical Workers No. 234 and the American Legion of St. Johnsbury. As an outdoorsman he enjoyed fishing and hunting, and he particularly loved the time spent with his children, grandchildren and friends. Some of Bob's most cherished moments were shared with Lew Bailey. Survivors include his wife Margaret "Margie" (DeRusha) Foster of St. Johnsbury; two sons, Robert L. Foster and wife Tammy of Littleton, and Steven E. Foster of North Concord; one daughter, Susan M. Aussiker and husband Keith of Lower Cabot; six grandchildren; two brothers, Richard G. , 70, of 1 Arlington Ave., Groveton, died at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., Tuesday, July 23, 2002, following a brief illness. She was born Sept. 26, 1931, in Quebec, Canada, to Charles Roche and Laura (Bernier) Boudrias. She was a resident of Groveton except for the years she and her husband resided on the Mason Farm in Brunswick, Vt. Eurielle attended Catholic School of Newport, Vt., and gained her degree in phlebotomy through the College of Lifelong Learning. She was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in Groveton, a member of the former Daughters of Pythias of North Stratford, an associate member of the Groveton Ambulance Corps, a member of the North Stratford VFW Auxiliary, and she served as a volunteer for the Groveton Thrift Shop during the mid-1990s, where her favorite work was in the infant department. While living in Brunswick she served as town clerk. She worked many years at Weeks Hospital in Lancaster as a lab technician. Following retirement in 1993 she became a patient-sitter for the hospital and had a private patient in Groveton. She was an artist with the crochet hook and collected any memorabilia pertaining to cats. Eurielle was one of the first people to respond with food and beverage to the volunteers whenever there was a fire. She was called Mom by nearly everyone who knew her, especially the younger folk. Her goal was to live each day to the fullest, as life is always too short. She is survived by a daughter, Sandra "Sandy" Mason of Groveton; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, Albert Boudrias of Manchester, Conn., Maurice "Mac" Boudrias of Turners Falls, Mass., and Edmund Boudrias of Texas; one sister, Lauretta Shelley of Jefferson, Mass.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Grant H. Mason, in 1985; a son, Charles Mark, in 1996; a brother, Hector, in 1992; and a sister, Evangeline, in 1999. , 64, of Lyndonville, died Wednesday morning, July 24, 2002, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. He was born Feb. 3, 1938 in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of the late John J. and Mary (Walton) McGinnis. John worked as a clerk for Shop n' Bag grocery stores in Levittown, Pa., and Willingboro, N.J., for 39 years, retiring in 1993. John moved to Lyndonville in 1995. He was a member of the Lyndonville Fire Department's Fire Police, which he truly enjoyed. He was a race car enthusiast and baseball fan, and enjoyed delivering daily newspapers to the Wheelock Village store for many years. John was predeceased by his wife of 23 years, Carol (Piccinetti) McGinnis, in 1992. Survivors include two children, Jeff McGinnis and Kirsti McGinnis; his sister, Annetta Schultz and husband Hugh of Sutton, and their sons Frank and Jack Schultz. An avid sportsman, he was employed at Ibis Reserve in West Palm Beach, as an assistant pro golf instructor. Matt will be sadly missed by his bride, Evelyn Eastman of West Palm Beach. Also surviving are his parents, Reginald and Yvonne Eastman of Hermon, Maine; brothers and spouses Rodney and Debbie Eastman of Greenbush, Maine, Steve and Debbie Eastman of Raymond, Maine, Gary and Tonda Eastman of Bangor, Maine, Mark and Belinda Eastman of Alton, Maine, and Dan and Jen Eastman of Okachobee, Fla.; sisters, Kim Veilleux and husband John of Bangor, Maine, Greg and Heidi Eastman of Gorham, Maine; and 21 nieces and nephews, each of whom he loved dearly; his grandmother, Mary Eastman; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Matthew had many friends, and he will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Edward and Marjorie Gervais of St. Johnsbury, and Clayton Eastman of Porter, Maine. , 54, of Ballston Spa, N.Y., formerly of Hardwick, died unexpectedly Monday, July 22, 2002, in New York City. He was born Oct. 23, 1947, in Hardwick, the son of Carl B. and Norma Jean (Gilson) Harvey. He attended Hardwick public schools, and graduated from Hardwick Academy, Class of 1965. He graduated from Champlain College in 1967; the University of Southern Colorado in 1978; and in 1984 he graduated from Golden Gate University with a master's degree in business management. On July 1, 1967, he married Marsha Mae Ainsworth in Hardwick. Stuart served his country for more than 22 years in the U.S. Air Force. He entered the service Oct. 25, 1967. His primary specialty was in communications-computer systems, programming and analysis. He received many decorations and medals for his efforts. Captain Stuart L. Harvey was honorably discharged Feb. 28, 1990. For nine years he had been employed as an examiner for the National Credit Union Administration in Albany, N.Y. In 1999 he received a specialized Examiner of the Year Award for Region 1 for N.C.U.A. Survivors include his father, Carl B. Harvey of Hardwick; his wife, Marsha of Ballston Spa, N.Y.; three sons, Todd Harvey and wife Mary of Dundalk, Md., Troy Harvey and wife Irene and their children Carrie and Shannon of Walden, and Tracy Harvey and fiancee Alissa Gates of Hardwick; one brother, Douglas Harvey and wife Elizabeth of Sykesville, Md.; two sisters, Sharon Slayton and husband Stephen of St. Johnsbury, and Carolyn Ryan and husband William of Craftsbury; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Visiting hours will be held Saturday from 7-9 p.m. at the Northern Vermont Funeral Home, 60 Elm St., Hardwick. A funeral service will be held Sunday, July 28, at 1 p.m., at the United Church in Hardwick with the Rev. Dr. June Totten officiating. , 89, of 536 Slate Ledge Rd., Littleton, N.H., died at the Grafton County Nursing Home July 26, 2002 after a brief illness. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 30, at 1 p.m., at the Faith Bible Church of Littleton, with the Rev. Mac Starring officiating. , 88, of Shields Lane, Glover, died Friday, July 26, 2002, at North Country Hospital in Newport. He was born in Craftsbury, May 23, 1914, the son of Clarence W. and Annie (Shields) Urie. He was a 1932 graduate of Craftsbury Academy. On March 31, 1945, he married Janet Urie and they owned and operated the dairy farm on Shields Lane since 1946. He was a member and elder of the East Craftsbury Presbyterian Church. His family, church and farm were his life. He enjoyed family, friends and especially his grandchildren and great-grandson, gardening and fishing. He leaves his wife, Janet; two sons, Mason Urie of Wells River, and Lowell Urie of Glover; three daughters, Sherry Urie of West Glover, Christine and husband Carmie Snider of Bradenton, Fla., and Edith and husband Claude Comtois of Derby; five grandchildren, Tracy Snider Legutko, Shawn Snider, Christopher Comtois, Alice Comtois and Andrew Comtois; one great-grandson, Henry Legutke; two brothers, Albert Urie of Craftsbury, and Ralph Urie and wife Hazel of Jeffersonville; a sister, Margaret Brown of Milford, N.H.; a sister-in-law, Gert Urie of Williston; and many other extended family and friends. He was predeceased by two sons, Colin and Jason Urie; a sister, Esther Urie; and a brother, Carl Urie. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, July 29, at the Presbyterian Church in East Craftsbury with the Rev. Rob John officiating. There will be no calling hours. Private interment will be in the East Craftsbury Cemetery. 96, formerly of Lyndonville, died Friday evening, July 26, 2002, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. He was born Aug. 13, 1905 in Greensboro, the son of the late George H. and Etta L. (Rodger) Brill. Max served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He lived with his sister and brother-in-law in Massachusetts for many years, where he worked for a wholesale greenhouse company planting and tending plants. After retirement they moved to Lyndonville. Max enjoyed spending the growing and hunting seasons at his camp in Norton where he hunted, fished and shared his garden produce with family and friends. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Lewis E. Brill, and his sister and brother-in-law, Isabel and John McCarty. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, July 30, at 11 a.m., at the Lyndon Center Cemetery, with the Rev. Tim Pittman officiating. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations made in Max's memory may be directed to the charity of one's choice.

, 95, of St. Johnsbury, died Friday evening, July 26, 2002. Mrs. Silsby resided at 120 Concord Ave. (now 841 Concord Ave.) for nearly 60 years. Since August of 1999 she had been a resident at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Aug. 2, 1906 in Webster, Mass., the daughter of Emil and Louise (Waddington) Kisro. She and her husband, Jon T. Silsby, came to St. Johnsbury from Newport, N.H. He passed away in 1967. Mrs. Silsby was a member of the North Congregational Church. She was a member of the church choir and was active in the church's committees and affairs. She worked as a teller at the Merchants Bank for 10 years. She is survived by two daughters, Janet S. Dunham and husband Wallace of Madbury, N.H., and Carolyn M. Silsby of Montpelier; three grandchildren, Susan Dunham Smolinsky and husband Larry of Baton Rouge, La., Cynthia Dyer and husband Donald of East Falmouth, Mass., and Carol Anne Vaicunas and husband Raymond of Randolph, N.J.; and four great-grandchildren, Nathan and Alyssa Dyer, and Rachael and Luke Vaicunas. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Aug. 3 at 2 p.m. at the North Congregational Church. The service will be held in the ladies' parlor with the Rev. Jay D. Sprout officiating. Family committal services will take place prior to the service at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours.
