94, of 400 Bobbin Mill Road, Lunenburg, passed away peacefully at his residence, Thursday afternoon, May 8, 2003. He was born in Lunenburg, one of 14 children, son of Luke and Nellie (Smith) Colby. Other than a brief, month-long pilgrimage to the Midwest as a teenager, Ellis has been a lifelong figure in the community of Lunenburg. Although most of his life had been spent farming, gardening, and making quality maple syrup, he and his brother Howard did own and operate a saw mill, which involved both families, in Lunenburg for many years. He served as a Selectman for several years, and in recent years had been considered by many as a local historian for the community, and he was renowned for his stories about the past. "Bump" was a predictable figure, to be seen slowly touring the back roads of Lunenburg at the crack of dawn every morning checking for the presence of wildlife, prior to pursuing his daily duties in his large garden, and then sitting on his porch waving to passing friends. He and his wife operated a fruit stand in front of the house for many years, which was a local source of fresh vegetables for locals and visitors alike. Over the years he accumulated many awards for his quality vegetables at the Lancaster Fair. He was a member of the Benton Lodge 88, F & AM of Guildhall. He was predeceased by his wife, Verna "Mam" Colby, in March 2000; and a son, Blaine "Bud" Colby, in 1988. McDONALD: Ernest Jr. ....show
, 78, of Plainfield, Vt., passed quietly from labor to rest on Memorial Day, May 26, 2003, at his home in Plainfield. Mr. McDonald was the first of four children born to Ernest R. McDonald Sr. and Bessie Batchelder McDonald. He was born Jan. 7, 1925 in Marshfield village. He often described his youth as an idyllic experience akin to a Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn existence. Winters were spent skating, skiing and sliding; and in summer, free time was occupied with fishing, swimming and boating at the family's camp at Peacham Pond. In high school, father noted that school work was often avoided in order to concentrate on baseball and basketball. While attending high school, he was a member of three basketball teams that either won or were runners-up in the state's Division III small school basketball tournaments from 1940 to 1942. In one of those contests, noted broadcaster Lowell Thomas called the game for a local radio station. Father first learned of the attack on Pearl Harbor while he and his dad were clearing trees that had been blown down by the hurricane of '38 at their camp in Peacham. He noted that he wasn't particularly sure of where Pearl Harbor was, but felt confident that the United States would prevail in the coming conflict. On June 23, shortly after his graduation from Plainfield High School, he was bound for Rutland by bus to be inducted into the U.S. Army. After his induction and prior to leaving for active duty he took and passed a test that enabled him to become a member of the officer candidate program. Although slots were available in other branches of the service, he chose the Army Aircorp's Aviation Cadet Program. At the time of his induction he was of small stature and below the Army's weight requirement for an individual of his size. In order to ensure he would meet the weight requirement he held on to the scale and by forcing himself down produced a weight figure more in line with the military requirement. In light of his size during the course of his training it was suggested by an instructor that he train for fighters; he instead chose B-25 bombers and after months of training received his gold bars and silver wings only days after the death of President Roosevelt. Although the war ended prior to his overseas deployment, he volunteered for duty in Germany and eventually was stationed with Allied occupation forces in Bavaria being assigned to the 9th Air Force Service Command in Ansbach. On occasion his duties required him to ferry aircraft between Switzerland, Belgium, France and Czechoslovakia. In Germany while at a club named the "Auger Inn" he met his future bride, Tamara Beckmann. Tamara was a displaced Latvian employed by the United Nations in Ansbach. Tamara's war experiences proved to be more perilous than the experiences of her future husband. She was a survivor of the world's worst sea disaster and was in the city of Dresden gathering food a day prior to the firebombing that completely destroyed the city. The couple had originally planned to be married in Germany; however, in January 1947 as part of the reduction in force in Europe, he was repatriated to the United States for discharge from military service. Although he was encouraged to remain in the military, he declined the opportunity and decided to give civilian life a try. Shortly after his return and with the help of Vermont Sen. Ralph Flanders, Tamara secured a seat on a plane destined for Boston after which the couple were reunited and married on Nov. 29, 1947. The union produced two children, Larissa in 1949 and Ernest III in 1953. In 1950 Ernest McDonald was appointed postmaster in Plainfield by President Harry Truman. On May 4, 1951 he was recalled to active duty for the Korean War and was eventually assigned to the 437 T.C.W. During the conflict he flew C-46 aircraft from Brady Field, Kyushu, Japan, to points in Korea and back. Upon completion of his tour of duty he again was released from active duty and returned to Plainfield to resume his duties as postmaster. He served Plainfield as its postmaster until his retirement in 1980. In August of 1960 he joined the Vermont Air National Guard. In 1962 he was appointed as the commanding officer of the Air Base Squadron. Later upon the reorganization of the unit, he became the executive officer of a larger group that replaced his original unit. Ernest McDonald retired from the air guard in 1967. Ernest McDonald was raised to the sublime degree of a master Mason in 1947 after becoming a member of Wyoming Lodge 80, F & AM in Plainfield. In 1957-58 he served that lodge as Master. In 1967 he served as a District Deputy Grand Master and later in his Masonic career became the Grand Master of the Most Ancient and Honorable Society of Free and Accepted Mason of the Grand Lodge of Vermont. In 1987 while serving as Grand Secretary to the Grand Lodge of Vermont, he was elected Potentate of Mt. Sinai Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. Brother McDonald retired as Grand Secretary (emeritus) in 1991. Father was a volunteer firefighter and a member of the Grange. In later years he became involved in an early reading program for elementary school children at Twinfield High School, and was the timekeeper at basketball games for a period of 50 years. Ernest McDonald was predeceased by his wife Tamara who was claimed by Alzheimer's disease. With the help of Home Health and Hospice, family and an aide, he cared for her at their home in Plainfield where she passed from life on Dec. 13, 2002. His untimely death came as the result of a stroke suffered on Easter Sunday. Father was a particularly active and youthful senior citizen. He was also a loyal husband and friend who was open minded, forward thinking and in touch with the world around him. His untimely passing has created a tremendous void in the lives of family members and friends; he will be dearly missed. "Pater" leaves behind a daughter, Larissa and husband Michael Flynn of Lyndonville; a son, Ernest III, wife Victoria and their son Rory McDonald of Plainfield; a sister, Blanche Whalen of Virginia Beach, Va.; and a brother, Harry McDonald of Burlington, Vt.; a brother-in-law, George Beckmanis of Clovis, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Laura Court of Vancouver, Wash.; and nieces and nephews. Friends of the family are invited to a memorial service at the family homestead on Lindemann Lane in Plainfield, Sunday, June 1, at 3:30 p.m. Special thanks are due to all caregivers who worked to save his life and also to those who made his life more comfortable in the final days. Memorial donations in the name of Ernest McDonald may be made to Masonic Charities of Vermont Inc., 49 East Rd. Berlin, Barre, VT 05641, or to the Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice, 600 Granger Rd., Barre, VT 05641.
