, 97, formerly of Montpelier, died Oct. 3. Born in 1899 in Bellows Falls, she was the daughter of George and Susannah (Young) Olmstead. She received her early education in the Bellows Falls school system, graduated from Bellows Falls High School and from the Teacher Training Course there. In 1920, she married H. Bernard Pembroke and they lived in Montpelier for a time. He died in 1979. She taught in Middlesex and Brattleboro. Survivors include her son, James I. Pembroke; twin daughters, Margie Estes and Madlyn Roberts; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

, 65, of Randolph, died Oct. 2. Born in 1931 in Northfield, she was the daughter of William and Lea (Belanger) O'Brien. She received her early education in Williams-town schools and graduated from Spaulding High School. She retired in September from Waterbury Plastics in Randolph. Survivors include two sons, Brian and Alan; two daughters, Kathleen MacAskill and Kristine Day; a half brother; three grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She received her early education in Williamstown and graduated from Williamstown High School. In 1952, she married John W. Gagnon. She devoted her life as a parent and homemaker. She was a member of St. Sylvester Church. Survivors include five daughters, Mary (Mrs. William) Metcalf, Louise (Mrs. James) Williams, Marguerite Gagon, Theresa (Mrs. Saiid) Nikouee and Jeanne (Mrs. Joseph) Emmons Sr; one son, Joseph; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother; nieces and nephews.

, 78, of Hardwick, died Oct. 1. Born in 1918 in Hardwick, he was the son of Frederick and Alice (Rockwell) McAdam. He was educated in Hardwick schools. He was a lineman for Hardwick Electric and was employed at the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury in boiler maintenance. He had spent the past 38 years as janitor and maintenance man at the United Church of Hardwick, retiring earlier this year. He was a member of the United Church of Hardwick. Survivors include two sons, Richard and Kenneth; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three brothers; one sister; several nieces and nephews.

, 87, of Berlin, died Sept. 30. Born in 1909 in Wolcott, he was the son of Alva and Bessie (Gould) Foster. He attended schools in Wolcott and high school in Morrisville. He served with the Army during World War II and later with the Vermont National Guard. In 1986, he married Helen Durant Silvia. He had been a supervisor with the Vermont Highway Department, retiring in 1975. He was a member of Wolcott United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lola Alice and Patricia; a stepson, John Michael Silvia; a sister; a brother; several nieces and nephews.

She married John MacAulay, who died in 1969. She was a member of the Graniteville Presbyterian Church and later became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Barre. Survivors include a daughter, Enid MacAuley; one grandson; nieces and nephews.

He received his early education in the Barre school system and graduated from Spaulding High School. He moved to Dryden, N.Y. and served the surrounding communities as a milk tester for Cornell University. In 1992, he married Ruth Elizabeth Gladding, who died in 1994. Survivors include three sons, Llewellyn Jr., Lester and Loren; six daughters, Betty Coughlin, Lorena McKinstry, Drucylla Masi, Lyle Miller, Floene Young and Laureen Liberty; 38 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

In 1954, she married Italo Federico. She was employed as a telephone operator at the New England Telephone & Telegraph office in Barre and later as a nurse's aid at the former Girouard-St. Jude Nursing Home. She had also worked as a switchboard operator at Central Vermont Hospital and more recently was employed in the Deli Department at Howard's Market. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Carl and Chris; one daughter, Cerina Federico; three grandchildren; her mother and stepfather; two sisters; nieces and nephews.

He attended the University of New Hampshire and was employed as a designer of heavy equipment by the Frank G. Hugh Company and Multi-Hoe Company, both of Chicago. He had moved to Vermont in 1979. , of Barre, died Oct. 1. Born in Barre, he was the son of Harry and Blanche (Carr) Holt. He attended the former Brookside School in Barre Town and Spaulding High School. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Corps. He joined his father in the building contracting business and continued operating the company, known as Earl Holt Inc., until he retired in 1971. In 1945, he married Doris (Dossey) LeClair, who died in 1988. His memberships included Hedding United Methodist Church. Survivors include his son, Earl Jr.; his daughter, Pamella Lawson; six grandchildren; his twin great-grandchildren; his companion, Jeanne Whitcomb.

He attended elementary school in Bedford, Mass., graduating from Lexington (Mass.) High School and Massachusetts Nautical School in Charlestown, Mass. He served with the Merchant Marines during World War II and was employed by the United States Lines as a captain in the Merchant Marines, prior to retirement. In 1942, he married Shirley Fishlock, they moved to Randolph in 1971. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Carol Hooker; three sons, Bruce, Alan and Philip; two brothers; seven grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He attended Montpelier Graded School and Montpelier High School and served with the Army Air Force during World War II. He was employed as a chauffeur by National Life Insurance Company, retiring in 1983. In 1961, he married Therma Billado, who died in 1987. She attended St. Peter Elementary School in Jersey City and graduated from the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Hoboken, N.J. In 1953, she married John Bradley. They moved to Marshfield in 1975, where they owned and operated the Marshfield General Store until 1988. They moved to Barre, where she was employed as a certified nurse's aide at Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was a member of St. Monica's Church. Survivors include her husband; four daughters, Kathleen Majewski, Jean Handerhan, Mary Bradley and Maureen Bradley; eight sons, Mark, Owen, Sean, Colin, Ian, Evan, Brian and Patrick; a brother; 17 grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was educated in Greensboro school and was a graduate of Randolph Agricultural School. In 1929, he married Lora Mackres. He was a farmer in Greensboro until 1957 and he later worked as a carpenter. He served as town tax collector and road commissioner. He was a director for the Hardwick Trust Company and later the Merchants Bank, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Greensboro. Survivors include his wife; a sister, Greta Collier; five nephews; one niece; several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Born in 1932 in Burlington, he was the son of James and Helen (Ballard) Hoag Sr. He attended schools in Burlington, graduated from Burlington High School and obtained his bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Vermont. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. In 1957, he married Marie Rugo. He was employed by the State of Vermont, Agency of Transportation. An active member of the Barre community, he was Barre City School Commissioner from 1970 to 1973, director of Barre Rotary and a member of the Barre Congregational Church. Survivors include his wife; one son, David; three daughters, Susan (Mrs. Hector) Badeau, Nancy (Mrs. Robert) Comolli and Stephanie (Mrs. Darian) Ahmadi; 23 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother; an aunt; four nieces and two nephews.

He moved to Montpelier recently to make his home with his son, Timothy. His wife, Eleanor Caldwell, is deceased. Survivors include two sons, Timothy and James; one daughter, Jacquelyn Kennedy; five grandchildren.
