Harold Elson Ryder ....show
, 78, of McIndoe Falls, surpassed his physical body's ability to sustain him at Munroe Medical Center, Ocala, Fla., on March 15, 2006. Although tested by three years of end stage renal failure, and 14 years of heart disease and diabetes, Harold's strong will to survive enabled him to see his grandchildren become mid-teenagers to young adults. Harold Elson was born Oct. 4, 1927, in North Danville, to Beatrice Maude (Machell) and (Harold) Roy Ryder, as their eldest, with his siblings, Irma Agnes and Dale Roy, following in May 1932. Reared in a working class neighborhood of Springfield, Mass., with trips to and summers in Vermont with relatives, he considered the Northeast Kingdom his home. Harold's stay-at-home mother taught him to observe details and how things worked together, to eat everything on his plate, to add more spice to the baked goods, to follow God and basic Christianity, and to obey his father. Her passing when he was 18 was a critical event as he felt very close to her. Harold's father used his talents as an electrician, carpenter, law enforcement officer, dairy farmer, and armory staff. Flexibility in application of learning and willingness to try new things were his legacies to Harold. His father came to appreciate his eldest as they grew older together in McIndoes. Harold attended classes in the Springfield, Mass., school system, although when the family moved to North Danville, Vt., in his early teens his formal education ended. Harold went to work on the family dairy farm, and continued with an agricultural deferment during World War II. Harold courted Joyce Ann MaGill and they married on June 26, 1949, at North Congregational Church in St. Johnsbury. Their early marriage years were spent where they could find employment in the St. Johnsbury area; Springfield, Vt.; and Springfield, Mass. In 1958 they settled in the middle of McIndoe Falls, where over the ensuing years they labored nights and weekends to rehabilitate a 200-plus-year-old house. They moved in with daughters, Jade Elaine (1952) and Cathy Ann (1954) and son Ross David (1956), and soon completed the quartet with Scott Harold (1959). Harold and Joyce tried out the West Palm Beach, Fla., area from late 1974 to early 1976. In their retirement years, they frequently spent the winter months in Florida. Harold and Joyce welcomed many people to share their home. Harold's grandmother-in-law, Charlotte MaGill, lived with them most of her retirement years. Harold's father came for care after a surgery, and then he moved a trailer in the back until he build a house in McIndoes. Harold and Joyce provided a true home for many foster children, mostly troubled teens, through the state of Vermont for 20 years. Significant among the foster children who remained in contact as adults are Keith Pratt, Kelly (Pratt) Gibson, Kelly Ann Wiggins, and Ginny (Morse) Paye. Harold said that Keith Pratt was a true son to him, and that their special relationship could not be any closer if Keith had been born his natural son. Kelly Gibson's children were considered as Harold's own grandchildren. Harold welcomed animals and had a particular fondness for all cats, Jersey cows and pet dogs. Infrequent were the times when the household was without multiple pets. Tinkering with mechanical objects and an obsession with automotive equipment began before his teen years. Harold's stories often featured cars, trucks or tractors, and their various features and idiosyncrasies. With excellent diagnostic skills, he commented that "cars talked to him." The majority of Harold's work years were spent in the automotive service trade in the St. Johnsbury area, notably at Railroad Street Gulf, Hoar's Volkswagen, and Warren Ford. His other jobs included truck driver and delivery route person, precision lathe and grinder machine operator, security guard, school janitorial maintenance worker, and motorcycle sales and service. Harold made-do creatively, and through his personal labor and persistence accomplished much for his family with few resources. Harold never needed to spend money on things for himself as his primary pride and satisfactions in life were his wife, their children, their grandchildren and their activities. His oldest grandchild, Amy, summed this up in a remark that nobody loved her more than Papa because he teared up, and was proud of her and her accomplishments. Learning new things, observing how details meshed to form working systems, and the world's intricacies and beauties were part of Harold's everyday existence. With only basic education, he was an expert on math conversion problems, an astute theorist on politics, and a sponge of social and economic trivia. Harold read, watched television and traveled whenever he could. He visited much of the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska, Canada, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Sweden, Norway and the Caribbean. Harold rarely was without an opinion and always told stories, finding humor in everyday situations. An affable man, he never lacked in things to talk about and find common ground in with friends and strangers. Harold and Joyce entertained with "house parties," cook-outs and swapping get-togethers. Harold would pick up down-on-their-luck hitchhikers and bring them home for a hot meal. Harold loved music, instrumentals and lyrics from his mother's piano renditions of standards and Gospel hymns, through an early teacher's record playing of classical music, to easy rock and country songs. His lovely voice could out-sing many with accurate lyrics to hymns and popular tunes dating back into the 1800s. As an active member of the McIndoe Falls (Congregational) United Church of Christ, Harold supported the church financially and through his participation as a deacon and on other committees. Anyone who knew Harold could see his faith and beliefs in his actions. In the community Harold was an active voter and member of the fire district. As a member of the Odd Fellows, he enjoyed a small part in a Roger's Rangers play. Harold and Joyce were regular square dancing members of the Connecticut Valley Swingers. Harold was predeceased by and he rejoined these family members, his mother, Beatrice Maude (Machell) Ryder, 1946; his father, Harold Roy Ryder, 1994; his sons, Ross David, 1978, and Scott Harold, 1976; his mother-in-law, Eliza Atlanta (aka Ela) (Burt) MaGill, 1949; his father-in-law, Norman Joseph MaGill II, 1955; his grandmother-in-law, Charlotte Isabelle (Fleming) MaGill, 1971; his brother-in-law, Oliver Burt MaGill, 1993; and husband of stepsister-in-law Katherine, William Locke, 1995. His family moved to the Currier Hill Farm in Topsham, Vt., around 1914 and Paul attended the Four Corner School for six years. He went to high school at St. Johnsbury Academy, graduating third in his class in 1929. After graduation, Paul went to work in the accounting department at General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y., and in November of that year, he became the first person in the United Stated to win an appointment to West Point on a competitive exam. It was always a great disappointment to him that he could not accept the appointment as he did not pass his physical. Due to the stock market crash, his position was terminated at GE in June 1930, and for the next six years, Paul worked as a logger, farm hand and truck driver. In November 1936, along with his partner Susie Hood, Paul purchased the family farm on Currier Hill in Topsham, and in April 1938, Susie and Paul were married. During the 1940s, Paul served as moderator and auditor for Topsham and was also on the ACP Orange County Committee. In the summer of 1946, Paul and Susie purchased the Chamberlin Farm on Monroe Road in Bath, N.H. After extensive remodeling to the barn in 1948, they sold the Topsham farm and moved their Guernsey herd to the Bath farm. During the 1950s, they joined the Wethers farm to their Bath holdings. Paul served on the ACP Grafton County Committee, and also on the Grafton County FHA Loan Committee. In May 1960, due to ill health, they sold the farm to Paul and Elaine Bedell, and built a new house down the road a bit. In May 1961, Paul began a new career as an on-the-road salesman for Stoddard Implement Company, the John Deere dealer. He continued this work for 18 years until retirement, working summers and spending winters in Florida, near Okeechobee. Susie Darling died on Jan. 26, 1997. Paul continued to be active in the community and was instrumental in getting the Horse Meadow Senior Center up and running by identifying the site and serving as one of the principal fund-raisers.
