Mary was a loving, genuine, compassionate, selfless lady, always putting the concerns of others ahead of hers. Mary will be remembered as being devoted to her husband, family and friends. She was a friend to all she met and this world is a better place because of her. Mary was born on March 26, 1921, in Ferrisburgh, Vt., the daughter of the late Ernest and Faith DeVine. Mary attended Robinson Grade School in Ferrisburgh, Lyndon Institute, and Bryan and Stratton Business School in Boston. She married Douglas Rossier on Aug. 2, 1943, and raised four children in Ferrisburgh Center in a home adjacent to the family business of DeVines Sales and Service. She served as auditor for the Town of Ferrisburgh and was an active, dedicated member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Vergennes, Vt., making flower arrangements for services and supporting special events in the church. Having learned the art of soap making as a young girl, Mary studied and perfected her skills to become a master soap maker of "Mary's Soaps." Her soap can be found at several businesses around Vermont. Mary generously shared her many talents to both adults and children, which included making soap, salves, perfume, and pot scrubbers, and teaching knitting, crocheting, tatting and refinishing and caning chairs to name a few. Many others have opened successful soap making businesses due to Mary's generous mentorship. In 1975, Mary and Doug moved to Holland, Vt., leaving the comforts of Ferrisburgh to "live off the land," relying on wind power and a wood stove for energy sources and without a telephone. During this time, Mary and Doug transitioned to a nutritional lifestyle of natural foods and supplements. Mary always shared her ever-increasing knowledge of good health out of concern for other's well-being. Mary and Doug enjoyed many years of Farmer's Market in the Northeast Kingdom, offering soaps, crafts, flowers, plants and good cheer. In 1988, they moved with the wind mill to Danville, Vt., their current home. Braunda went to meet her Creator May 2, 2006. Braunda Elaine Darling ....show
was born on the 29th of January, 1935, in St. Johnsbury, Vt., the daughter of Roderic Darling and Elaine (Fairbanks). Through a clerical error she lived her life with Jan. 27 as her birthday, which is an interesting footnote to an interesting person. She grew up in the shadow of the Fairbanks mansion in St. Johnsbury. Her mother was a Fairbanks, but of a different branch of the family from the wealthy ones. Later, when the family moved to Lyndonville, again they found themselves with a prominent name, but with no connection to the moneyed Darlings. In Caledonia County, she was the poor girl with the rich names. She moved to Newport when her dad was transferred to the railroad's freight office, after her freshman year of high school. In Newport High she was active in theater and the band, where she played just about anything. She also sang in the chorus and a barbershop quartet. After high school, she attended Tufts University in Boston. On June 11, 1955, she married Joseph Coutu Jr. They were married for 49 years. Joe predeceased her on June 25, 2003. From their union, five children and 12 grandchildren have come into this world. She is survived by her children, Daniel and his friend Cathline Ruff of Derby, Michael and his wife Chieko of Newport, Charles of Chateauguay, N.Y., Catherine Garrison and her husband Steve of Waterboro, Maine, and Ronald and his friend Donna Tiedeman of North Troy; grandchildren, Hayato Coutu, Richard Coutu, Robert Coutu, Christopher Coutu, Matthew Coutu, Dawn Coutu, Stephen Coutu, Gretchen Garrison, Corey Coutu, Marc Coutu and Bryea Coutu; and a tremendous number of friends and extended family. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Lorraine Heath; and a nephew, Dale Kelley. She was a mother to every child in the neighborhood, whether on Orchard Street or the Bluffs. Fiesty to the end, she never failed to accomplish whatever she set her mind to. Her spirit and vigor set an example for her family and the community in a way that has touched all of our lives forever. She was a musician, a knitter extraordinaire, and the founder of both the Newport and Sacred Heart Alumni Associations. Donations to either association would be very much in line with her wishes. Visiting hours will be Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, Darling Hill Road (formerly Sias Ave.), Newport, on Friday, May 5. A funeral of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church on Saturday, May 6, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Yvon Royer officiating. Come celebrate her life. Interment will follow at St. Mary's cemetery in Newport.
