Lewis A. Shattuck ....show
of Maple Street in Hardwick, Vt., passed away Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006. Born in Hardwick, Vt., on May 22, 1937, Lew was the only child of Lewis H. Shattuck and Alberta (Hawes) Shattuck. Lew graduated from Hardwick Academy in 1955 and went on to Boston University, earning a journalism degree before entering the Air Force where he was mainly stationed in Japan. After some time with the Lowell, Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce, he went on to run SBANE (Smaller Business Association of New England) for the next 25 years, bringing the interests of small business to the desks of U.S. Congressmen - and on several occasions - into the Oval Office. Among others, Lew had sit-down meetings with Presidents Bush, Reagan, Carter, and Nixon. In 1992, Lewis returned to his beloved Vermont as executive vice president of the Barre Granite Association. From 2001 until the time of his death Lew was a coordinator with the Orleans Northern Essex Community partnership. He has also been a coordinator with the Hardwick-Greensboro Pre-Charge Restorative Justice Program. These endeavors were very dear to his heart as he had an opportunity to improve the community that years ago raised him. He is survived by his two sons, James and Thomas Shattuck of Boston. The family will receive friends on Friday, Aug. 11, from 7-9 p.m. at Des Groseilliers Funeral Home, 17 Church, Hardwick, VT 05843. of East Burke, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, at St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center in St. Johnsbury, at the age of 73. He was born March 19, 1933, in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late Charles R. and Cigina C. (Ingerbretson) Jenson. Hank was a long haul truck driver for many years, driving more than five million miles with no accidents. In 1995, following retirement, he moved from Staten Island, N.Y., to Vermont. He is survived by his only brother, Charles R. Jenson Jr., of Long Island, N.Y.; and several friends. Following his wishes there will be no services.

In 1931 Walter graduated as valedictorian of his class at St. Johnsbury Trade School. This past June he thoroughly enjoyed attending his 75th class reunion. On April 1, 1993, his wife, Miriam (Skinner) McKee, passed away. He is survived by daughter Marjorie Berry of Lyndonville; son Walter Arthur McKee of Polson, Mont., and their families. Funeral services will be held this Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Sayles Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Powers officiating. Committal services will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Her family includes three daughters and their spouses, Lee and Roy Arsenault of Westerly, R.I., Ellie and Harry Adamek of Barnet, Vt., and Cindy and Steve Abeling of Milford, Conn. , of Littleton, N.H., passed away Aug. 8, 2006, at Lafayette Center in Franconia, N.H. Born Feb. 17, 1910, in Somerville Mass., he was the son of John F. and Elinor J. (Redmond) Estle. He was a graduate of Brookline (Mass.) High School, Class of 1928, and Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, Class of 1932, where he earned a bachelor of science degree. He pursued graduate studies at Marburg University in Germany and Springfield College. Ed held various jobs in the Boston area during The Depression. In 1937 he became cost accountant at the Quaboag Rubber Co. in North Brookfield, Mass. He was married to Deborah Wills in 1941 in North Brookfield, and in 1942 volunteered for military service and attended Officers' Candidate School. He graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant and served in the European Theatre as communications officer with the 231st Anti-aircraft Battalion attached to the 9th Air Defense Command. He was honorably discharged from the Army with the rank of captain. An enthusiastic hiker and skier, he and Deb decided to head for the North Country after the war, and in 1946 they purchased the former Magoon house on West Main Street, now Dr. Taylor's office. They resided there for 30 years. Upon their arrival in Littleton, Ed worked at the Gilman Paper Co., Hadlock Enterprises, and for Ernest Johnson, CPA. In 1955 he opened his own accounting practice as Edwin F. Estle, CPA, which he owned for 21 years. Over the years he served as director of Littleton National Bank, was a member of the school board, and was a member and president of the Littleton Rotary Club. He was also a deacon and treasurer of the First Congregational Church in Littleton. An avid golfer, he was an active member of the Bethlehem Country Club for many years. In 1965 he organized a fitness and recreational running group called the North Country Athletic Club which for seven years sponsored the Littleton 10-Mile Road Race on Main Street. Runners from all over New England participated, including Johnny Kelly, the Boston Marathon runner. At the age of 60, Ed completed the Mount Washington Auto Road Foot Race with his son John. Upon his retirement in 1976, Ed sold his accounting practice, and he and Deb traveled to Europe, Canada, Washington and Alaska. After retirement, they spent their winters in Aiken, S.C., where Ed volunteered with the Federal Tax Preparation Program. They returned to Littleton as full-time residents in 1991 where they lived on Herbert Lane. They have resided at Riverglen House since 2004. Ed is survived by his wife, Deborah; daughters, Martha and her husband Bryant Eaton of Hampton, NB, Canada, and Nancy and her husband Jonathan Graves of Grand Manan Island, NB, Canada; a son, John and his partner Norma Haubenstock of Fairbanks, Alaska; three grandchildren and a great-grandson; and two nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by his sister, Grace. A community memorial service will be held on Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, at 11:30 a.m., at the First Congregational Church with a reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation in his name may be made to Copper Cannon Camp in Franconia, or the First Congregational Church, Littleton.
Velmore O. Forrest ....show
, 82, of South Lunenburg Road, Lunenburg, N.H., died Thursday morning, Aug. 10, 2006, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster. Mr. Forrest was born in Laconia, N.H., on April 23, 1924. Raised in Lunenburg, he attended schools there and was a graduate of Littleton High School. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army and made the D-Day landing in Belgium. After the war he resided in Woodstock, N.H., and various other places before returning to Lunenburg. For 29 years he served as Lunenburg's postmaster and was also a former Lunenburg Selectman. He was a Communicant of St. Leo's Church in Lunenburg. Memberships include John W. Weeks Post 3041, Lancaster; the Elks; and the National Association of Postmasters, of which he served one year as president. Velmore was a devoted family man. He also enjoyed the company of his many friends and was an avid hunter and Yankees fan. He enjoyed 24 years of retirement. Family members include his wife of 41 years, Joyce A. Forrest of Lunenburg; three daughters, Aprel A. Woods and her companion Peter Buffington of Lunenburg; Katherine Couture and her husband Donald of Berlin, and Linda Glass and her companion William Moore of California; seven grandchildren, Rick Santaw, Kathy Hartshorn, Cher Woods, Kellie Churchill, Keith Hartshorn, Katrina Hartshorn and Connie Hartlen; 13 grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Joyce Forrest of St. Johnsbury; and several nieces. He was predeceased by a daughter, Judy Bronson. At Velmore's request, there will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday morning, Aug. 12, at 10 a.m., at St. Leo's Church, Lunenburg. The Rev. Patrick Forman, pastor of St. John the Evangelist Church, St. Johnsbury, Vt., will officiate. Military honors will follow immediately after the service on the church property. , 84, of East Hardwick, left this world for a better place on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006, with her loving family by her side. She was born June 18, 1922 in Swanton, the daughter of the late Joseph L. and Bessie (Sartwell) Lamphere. She attended public schools in Northwestern Vermont. On Nov. 3, 1937, she married the love of her life, Carroll Richard Smith, in Enosburg Falls. They lived in Bakersfield before moving to Greensboro Bend in 1944 where she and her husband purchased a dairy farm which they operated for more than 15 years. She was in housekeeping and later a nurse's aide at the Hardwick Hospital and the Greensboro Nursing Home. Mary cleaned cottages for campers on Caspian lake. For more than 16 years, she was a caretaker in the Stowe area for the Houghton Freeman family, whom she regarded as an extended family. Mary retired in the early 1990s. She was a member of the Greensboro Bend United Methodist Church and a past member of the Caspian Lake Grange 382 and the Pomona Grange 15. Mary will be remembered as a woman who worked tirelessly on the family farm, raising her two young children, two grandchildren and caring for nieces and nephews who wanted to spend time. She was a friend to all who knew her. Survivors include a son, Richard Smith of East Hardwick; a daughter, Bonnie Langdell and her husband Gary of North Wolcott; a brother, Leonard Lamphere of Lowell; a sister, Leona "Polly" Shatney and her husband Carroll of Greensboro Bend; two grandchildren, Michael Smith and his wife Paula and their children Elizabeth and Patrick, and Connie Goodell and her husband Elli and their children Michelle, Jason, Josh and Christy; two great-great-grandchildren; special family friends, Alton, Melody and Levi Chase; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Carroll, in 1985; a granddaughter, Gail Smith; a sister, Alice Gillian; and two brothers, Jay and George Lamphere. To honor her request, there will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, at 1 p.m., at the Hope Community Church in Walden with the Rev. , of Wheelock, died Wednesday evening, Aug. 9, 2006, at the Union House Nursing Home in Glover, at the age of 63. He was born March 6, 1943 in St. Johnsbury, Vt., son of the late Joseph A. and Carrie (Keneson) Trembley. In 1961 George graduated from the St. Johnsbury Trade School. He then entered the U.S. Army and served in Germany. On June 29, 1968, he married Linda Hudson. George worked as a machinist for Northeast Tool Co. in Lyndon for over 20 years. When the company moved to South Carolina, he went to work for VT Tap & Die Co. in Lyndonville as a machinist. Due to failing health, he retired in 2003 after 10 years of service. George was a member of the American Legion Post 30 of Lyndon, and the Tom Breslin Center of Lyndonville. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed deer hunting out of the Wheelock hunting camp, spending time at Seymour Lake, fishing, boating, snowmobiling, and spending time with family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Linda H. Trembley of Wheelock; three godchildren, Chad Hudson and his wife Kelly of Sheffield, Katrina Valley and her husband Joey of Barton, and Samantha Bushong and her husband Kyle of Virginia; one brother, Ronald Trembley and his wife Lucey of Sutton; four sisters, Rose Morris of North Danville, Jean Blakley and her husband Glen of Burley, Idaho, Patricia DeGreenia and her husband Phil of Sheffield, and Gloria Phillips of Saco, Maine; his mother-in-law, Verla Hudson of Wheelock; three brothers-in-law, Robert Alseth of Cascade, Idaho, Erton Hudson and his wife Betty of Florida, and Clinton Hudson and his wife Mary of Wheelock; a sister-in-law, Brenda Davis of East Burke; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his many good friends. , 83, of Williamstown, Vt., and formerly of Stratford, Conn., died Aug. 13, 2006, at Rowan Court Rehab Center, Barre, Vt. She was born at home on Nov. 30, 1922, in Lyndon, Vt. She was the daughter of the late Clyde and Abbie (Jackman) Nutting. She graduated from Lyndon Institute and Albany Business School. On July 20, 1946, she married Robert F. McCorkle in Port Chester, N.Y. In her early years, she worked at Chance Vought Aircraft in Stratford, Conn., and spent most of her years as a homemaker. She loved cooking and bowling. She was an avid reader who completed the daily New York Times crossword puzzle. In Stratford, she volunteered for the American Red Cross, for the American Shakespeare Theatre Guild, and was an active PTA member of Lordship School PTA and Christ Episcopal Church. In addition to her husband, Bob, of Williamstown, Vt., she is survived by one son, Robb and his wife Pat of Orange, Conn.; three daughters, Sue Haselman and her companion Peter Loring of South Burlington, Vt., Kathi Lengel and her husband Jim of Portsmouth, R.I., and Betsy and her husband Joe Ramatowski of Ansonia, Conn.; one brother, Wayland Nutting of Lancaster, N.H.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by one brother, Red Nutting; and four sisters, Stella Farmer, Charlotte Ball, Beulah Bernard and Beverly Smith, all of Vermont. , 93, of Enfield, N.H., formerly of Greensboro Bend, Vt., died early Friday, Aug. 11, 2006, at the Genesis Lebanon Center in Lebanon, N.H. He was born May 11, 1913, in Wheelock, the son of the late Frank E. and Jennifer (Dickson) Willey. He attended public schools in Greensboro, East Hardwick, Walden and Stannard. On June 4, 1938, he married Ellen Leona Stearns in Wolcott. In his earlier years he worked for the town of Greensboro on their road crew. He owned and operated a family dairy farm in Greensboro for six years. He drove a milk truck for several years in Greensboro, Greensboro Bend, Morrisville and Barton. He later was employed and worked his way up to manager of the United Farmers Creamery in Troy. He retired in 1975. Donald was a member of the United Methodist Church in Greensboro Bend, and the Teamsters Trucking Union. He will be remembered as a very kind man who was willing to help everyone. He enjoyed the time that he spent with family and a special friend, Melinda Hunt, boating, gardening, the outdoors, greyhound racing, trips to the humane society in Enfield, N.H., and his cat "Nanny." Survivors include a son, Frank Willey of Enfield, N.H.; five daughters, Shirley Pearson of Barton, Sylvia Gates of East Hardwick, Virginia Richardson of Morrisville, Linda Smith of Westfield, and Jeanette Guyette of Wilder; a brother, Everett Willey of Johnson; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Ellen, in 1998; a daughter, Evelyn Kellogg, in 1988; a grandson, Donald Chabot; a sister, Hazel Provencal; and four brothers, Gordon Willey, Clifton Willey, Harold Willey and Howard Willey. , 69, of Canaan, Vt., passed away early Friday morning, Aug. 11, 2006, at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in White River Junction, Vt. Mr. Lovering was born Oct. 8, 1936, in St. Albans, Vt., the son of the late Lewis R. and Vivian M. (Rooney) Lovering. Mr. Lovering graduated from Canaan Memorial High School in 1954, and from Lyndon State College in 1958 with a degree in education. He taught at several schools, including Guilford, Vt., and Pittsburg, Stewartstown Hollow and Colebrook, N.H., and also worked as a substitute teacher in area schools. He taught special education in southern New Hampshire, and served as an alcohol and drug counselor for Seminole Point in Sunapee, N.H. He served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam, and also serving in Korea and Germany. He worked at the Balsams Panorama Golf Course during the summer and for the Wilderness Ski Area as a ski patrolman during the winter. He was a 30-year member of the National Ski Patrol, a life member of the VFW and a member of the DAV. Mr. Lovering is survived by a sister, Mary Lou Lovering of Canaan, Vt.; a brother, Patrick O'Brien and his wife Mary Pat McGrath of Newborn, N.C.; a special cousin, Robert Payeur and his wife Sharon of Waterford, Vt.; 11 nieces and nephews, Michael O'Brien, Susan Dively, Patricia Baron, Edward O'Brien, Catherine Cooper, Nancy Jones, Phyllis O'Brien, Christopher Doyle, Kevin Doyle, Anthony Doyle and Karen Doyle Culhane; 23 great-nieces and -nephews; two great-great-nieces; and several cousins. Mr. Lovering was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Mahlon O'Brien; and two sisters, Ellen Lovering Doyle and Eileen Lovering McCollum. Calling hours will be held on Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., at the Jenkins and Newman Funeral Home in Colebrook, N.H. , 37, of Walden, died unexpectedly Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006, at his home. He was born Sept. 13, 1968, in Hartford, Conn., the son of John "Jack" and Trudy Church Lakus. He had formerly been employed in the maintenance department at the Golden Eagle Resort in Stowe and had enjoyed working on a Christmas tree farm shaping trees. J.L. was an accomplished guitarist and enjoyed writing music. He enjoyed the ocean and had looked forward to a trip in the next few weeks. He is survived by his parents, Jack and Trudy Lakus of Hardwick; a sister, Dawn Tanko of Walden; a brother, Darrin Lakus and his wife Kathy of Worcester; a niece, Tabby Tanko; and a nephew, William Tanko. Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 14, at 10 a.m. at the White-Fiess Funeral Home, 165 Brooklyn St., Morrisville. Visitation is from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday. , 85, of Lyndonville, died July 10, 2006, at the Cardiac Critical Care Unit at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. He was born Feb. 3, 1921, near Walden Station, Walden Heights, son of Henry L. and Lena M. (O'Hearn) La Bree. Ray attended school in Danville and worked on some farms around Danville, helping with barn chores while still attending school. At age 16, he started working at C.H. Davis bobbin mill, Danville Manufacturing Co. Then he started driving log trucks for C.H. Davis Sawmill, Miles Pond, Concord, Vt., until his induction into military service Sept. 30, 1942. Raymond served in the 621st Medical Clearance Company as a truck driver in France, Belgium and Germany in action from June 16, 1944, to April 22, 1945, and received a Bronze Star and four battle stars. Raymond was discharged Oct. 25, 1945, with rank of Technician 5th Grade. He returned to the sawmill at Miles Pond, logging and driving log trucks during the winter and working in the mill until November 1946 when Mr. Davis, who also owned the Vt. Tap & Die in Lyndonville, gave him a job at Vt. Tap & Die where he worked until Northeast Tool, a branch of Vt. Tap & Die started operations on Pudding Hill in Lyndonville. He worked at Northeast Tool until his retirement Feb. 3, 1983. Raymond was rehired during his retirement to work for Vt. American (formerly Vt. Tap & Die) at a sugar place on Darling Hill in East Burke producing maple syrup each spring and generally maintaining and overseeing the premises. Raymond did this from October 1985 to October 1991. He built his home and a camp in South Wheelock. Raymond like working in the woods - logging at camp and cutting firewood to heat his home. He also maple sugared at camp and had family and friends there for picnics. Raymond enjoyed doing things that involved his family and friends. They were all precious to him, especially his 3-year-old great-granddaughter, Elizabeth. Raymond, an active member of St. Elizabeth's Church, was an usher for more than 40 years. He was a life member of VFW Post 10038 in Lyndonville, and a member of the Tom Breslin Center of Lyndonville. Raymond is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marguerite (Patoine) La Bree; a son, Robert and his wife Susan (Gilman); and a daughter Doris and her husband Bernard Boulay; his grandchildren, Kelly, Erin and Eric La Bree, Scott and his wife Susan (Liberty) Boulay, Melissa (Boulay) and her husband Stacy, Laura (Boulay) and her husband Jerry Leonard; a great-granddaughter, and a step-great-grandson; a sister, Edna Goyette and her son Francis; a nephew, Steven Paul; two aunts, Aldea and Alice La Bree; two cousins, Mary Ann Gates and Mary Dyke; Marguerite's mother, Rosa Patoine of Hardwick; and many nieces and nephews and in-laws. Raymond was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Margaret Paul, who died Jan. 24, 2006; and two brothers-in-law.

, 77, of Colchester, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006, at Starr Farm Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. Norman was born in Lyndonville Nov. 23, 1928, the son of the late Frank and Bertha (Wright) Leach. He graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1946 and went to work for the telephone company as a cable splicer. His employment was interrupted by his tour of duty with the Army National Guard, stationed in Virginia. On June 10, 1951, he married Phyllis Facteau in Lyndonville. Norman worked for New England Telephone from 1952 until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, became a member of the Montpelier Grange in 1954, was a member of Washington Lodge 3 and a 32nd degree Mason, member of the Scottish Rite Bodies and a charter member of the Malletts Bay Congregational Church. Norman taught Sunday school for many years and was a Boy Scout leader at one time. , 85, passed away Aug. 12, 2006. She was born in Haverhill, N.H. and raised in Woodsville, N.H., the youngest daughter of Guy G. and Minna (Pike) Day. She was a long-time resident of Falls Church, Va., and most recently a three-year resident of Woodbridge, Va. She graduated from Woodsville High School in 1939, and Mary Hitchock Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She was a Navy nurse from 1944-51 and an elementary school teacher in the 1960s in Falls Church. She was predeceased by sisters, Mildred Abbott, Muriel Abernathy and Doris M. Douglas; and her husband, Kenneth L. Walton. She is survived by daughters, Jan Edwards, of Bellingham, Wash., and Judith Ohleger and her husband Jon of Manassas, Va.; grandchildren, Andrew Ohleger and Kelsey Ohleger of Manassas, Va.; and many nieces and nephews. , 70, of Cabot, died early Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, at her residence. She was born July 3, 1936 in Meriden, Conn., the daughter of the late Eric A. and Beatrice (Wood) Anderson. She graduated from Meriden High School in the Class of 1954. On May 17, 1958, she married David Donovan Houston in Meriden. Following their marriage, they moved to Vermont where she has since made her home. In her earlier years, Myra was employed as a secretary. She later assisted her husband on their family dairy farm in Cabot for more than 17 years. Mrs. Houston was a member of the United Church of Cabot and the women's fellowship of that church, the Cabot Veterans Honor Roll Committee and a part member of the Cabot Home Dem. She was an auditor for the town of Cabot and treasurer of the Cabot Credit Union. She enjoyed the time she spent with her children and grandchildren, collecting Depression glass, garage sales, and visiting extended family members and friends. Survivors include two sons, David Houston Jr. of Bakersfield and Eric Houston of Baltimore, Md.; a daughter, Dawn Carbonneau of White River Jct.; a sister, Nancy Barnes of Meriden, Conn.; five grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. To honor her request, there will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006, at 2 p.m., at the United Church of Cabot with the Rev. Bill Cobb officiating. , of Danville, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006, at the age of 89. He was born in St. Johnsbury July 5, 1917, the son of Louis and Grace (Routier) Bradley. He graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy with the Class of 1937. In his time, he was quite a runner, he set the Academy record for the mile three consecutive years. His 4:35 record stood for 26 years. He also was part of the Academy ski team. He married Joyce Church on March 9, 1957. Both he and Joyce worked at Fairbanks, Walter as a master machinist. Together they also operated an antique and clock repair shop out of their home on Route 2B in Danville. Joyce passed away June 5, 2000. Walter was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and served in France. He is survived by a few cousins and Joyce's family. Graveside services will be held Friday, Aug. 18, at 11 a.m., at the Danville Green Cemetery. Friend and Route 2B neighbor Robert Hallas will officiate. Friends and family will gather at Sayles Funeral Home from 10-10:30 a.m. prior to leaving for the cemetery for the 11 a.m. graveside service. passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 18, 2006, in Connecticut. She was born in Walden on Oct. 9, 1914, the daughter of Roy and Hattie (Cole) Patterson. She attended Walden School and graduated from Danville High School in 1932. She married Marshall "Buster" Brown in 1934. During the World War II era, they moved to Connecticut to work in defense plants. Erlene retired as supervisor from New England Tobacco Co. She was an avid reader and enjoyed knitting and crossword puzzles. Survivors include three daughters, Lois Carcare and her husband Donald of Monroe, Conn., Charlene Kearney of Montpelier, Vt., and Dorothy King and her husband Martin of Oxford, Conn.; and a son, Charles Maine and his wife Ann of Gowanda, N.Y.; grandchildren, John Willey and Donette Christensen of St. Stephen, S.C., Michael Kearney of Barre, Vt, Joshua Wing of Waterbury, Conn., Jessica Wing of Oxford, Conn., and Christopher Carcare of Mt. Kisco, N.Y.; six great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Lloyd Patterson and his wife Polly of North Danville, Vt.; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Carol Meketa of Montpelier; a son, Robert of Walden; a brother, Charles, and a sister, Nadine Huntington, both of Barre, Vt.; and a sister, Goldie Maine of Gowanda, N.Y. A service will be held at the Walden United Methodist Church Saturday, Aug. 19, at 11 a.m., with a committal at Noyesville Cemetery. She had formerly worked at Maple Grove Farms in St. Johnsbury as a candy maker, as well as being a nurse's aide and caregiver. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Caledonia Forest and Stream Club, the Cancer Support Group, St. Johnsbury, and the North Danville Home Dem. Ruth was also a member of the North Danville Baptist Church. Ruth married Kenneth E. Bailey on Jan. 21, 1956, who predeceased her on June 22, 1993. She was also predeceased by a brother, Albert Achilles. passed away at his home in Danville on Aug. 19, 2006, at the age of 86. He was born in Bellows Falls on Sept. 21, 1919, to Floyd and Mildred (Severens) Bowen of Saxtons River. He graduated magna cum laude from Amherst College in 1940, and on Sept. 14 of that year married Susan Heath Beardslee of Westboro, Mass. They moved to New York City where he began graduate study in history at Columbia University. During World War II, he worked in the U.S. State Department as an economic specialist; he then returned to Columbia to earn his doctorate, writing his thesis, "German Theories of the Corporate State." He taught at Columbia until 1955, then at Elmira College and the State University of New York-Long Island before going to Northern Illinois University in 1960 to establish the new graduate program in history. He was awarded Fulbright and Ford Foundation grants for historical research in France and Italy, and also taught for several years at the University of Nantes in France. After retiring in 1985, he lived full-time in Vermont and taught history courses at Lyndon State College. Along with teaching and studying history, he enjoyed gardening, carpentry and restoring his Vermont farmhouse into a year-round home. He was also interested in electronics and raising sheep, as well as working on his Model A Ford. His books include "Diderot: Rameau's Nephew and Other Stories" (translated from the French and coedited with Jacques Barzun, 1956), "A Frenchman in Lincoln's America" (1974, 1975) and "A Frontier Family in Minnesota" (1981). He collaborated with the French scholar Michel Rez? on "Key Words in American Life" (1988), "Introduction ? la vie Am?ricaine" (1991), and "The American West: History, Myth and the National Identity" (1998). As a memorial, these books will be on display at the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum during August and September. He is survived by Susan Bowen of Danville, his wife of 65 years; his daughter, Sarah, of Peacham, and her children, Eve and Nikko; his son, Paul and daughter-in-law Judith Strong of Cincinnati, Ohio, and their children Alexandra and Richard; and by nephews, nieces, cousins, and many friends and colleagues. Gifts in his memory may be made to the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum and to the Caledonia Home Health Care Hospice Program, for whose generous care the family is very grateful.

, 71, passed away at her home at 8 Myrtle St., Whitefield, N.H., on Aug. 18, 2006. Marilyn was born on April 16, 1935, a daughter to John Reginald and Ella Francis (Masterman) Ruland in Gilford, Maine. Marilyn moved to Whitefield, N.H., from Maine in 1978 for the love of the mountains and started Kozy Korner Ceramics. She was a 53-year member of the Susie Carr Chapter 181 of the Eastern Star in Sangerville, Maine. She enjoyed her family most of all, but shared with others her love for snowmobiling, camping, making ceramics, painting and leather crafting. Best of all her gifts, she shared her smile and sense of humor and will be sadly missed, especially by her special and intimate friends who were so much a part of her daily life. Marilyn is survived by her three children, Randy Scott Raymond and his wife Sharon of Fairfield, Maine, Kristy Anne Palmer and her husband Bruce of Manchester, N.H., and Lawrence "Larry" Raymond Jr. and his wife Lisa of Troy, Maine; one brother, John Reginald Ruland Jr. of Indiana; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Aug. 23, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., at the Pillsbury Funeral Home-Littleton Chapel, 101 Union St. She will be laid to rest at the Lawn Cemetery in Gilford, Maine, at a later date to be announced by the family. , 68, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, at his camp in Newark, Vt. He had been declining in health since his diagnosis of ALS in February 2005. He was born in Barre Aug. 24, 1937, to Forrest A. Ashford and Stella (McMaster). Forrest attended Montpelier schools and joined the United States Navy in 1955. He worked in the granite industry, retiring from Montpelier Granite Works. He spent many of his younger years playing in a band with his brothers. Forrest married Judith Chase in Northfield on July 4, 1959. They recently celebrated their 47th anniversary. Forrest and Judy lived in the central Vermont area and the past 30 years in Northfield. He was a member of the American Legion Post 3 of Montpelier. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and storyteller. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor, even through his illness. He loved his children, grandchildren, family, friends and beloved cat Wee Gee. Survivors include his wife, Judy of Northfield; a son, Kyle Ashford of Bethel; daughters, Robin Ashford and Michael Lemieux of Randolph, Melodie Ashford and Scott Bullard of Montpelier, and Holly Ashford and Jeff Gaudet of Northfield; siblings, Virginia Somers and her husband Gilmore of West Barnet, Stella LaFountain of Montpelier, Dorothy Ashford of Montpelier, John Ashford of Barre, Isabelle and Ed Ewarts of New Hampshire, and Edward Ashford and Eurban Ashford, both of Barre; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews. passed away at home very peacefully in her sleep Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006, at the age of 83. She was the widow of Bernard K. Perkins, a former Sears employee, on Jan. 3, 2003. She was born in St. Johnsbury Center on Sept. 4, 1922, the fourth of eight children born to Carl and Mabelle (Miles) Remick. Her family was everything to her. She loved playing cards with them, going out to eat, chicken pie suppers. She was a real sports enthusiast especially when it came to the Red Sox, the Patriots, Tiger Woods, NASCAR and stockcar racing, and her "soaps." She had undergone dialysis treatments three times a week for the past six years. , 88, lovingly known by friends and neighbors as "The Mayor of Kimball Hill," passed away at his Whitefield, N.H., residence on Kimball Hill Road, Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006. He was born in Whitefield, the son of William A. and Lydia (Priest) Harris. He was a farmer and a carpenter, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, caring for animals, gardening, and was an avid Red Sox fan. He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, George and William Jr.; and a sister, Mabel. He is survived by his wife, Ruth F. , 79, of North Stratford, N.H., passed away early Thursday morning, Aug. 24, 2006, at the Bel Aire Genesis Health Center in Newport, Vt., after a period of failing health. Mrs. Hartford was born June 29, 1927, in Ilford, Essex, England, daughter of the late William Victor McAuliffe and Florence Annie (Farrow) McAuliffe. Mrs. Hartford attended schools in England. She was a schoolgirl in London during the German blitz in World War II, and she loved to tell stories about wartime England. She was married in 1944 and came to the United States aboard the Queen Mary with 3,000 other "war brides" in 1946. Upon settling in North Stratford, Mrs. Hartford became well-known in the area as a cook in many of the local restaurants, and also worked in the local plywood mill and tended bar at many local establishments. She was a wonderful seamstress her entire life and had many customers in the North Country. When Mrs. Hartford was in her 60s, she began to train as a nurse's aide and she completed the program to become a certified nurse's aide. After completing that course of study, she worked for a period in Lancaster at McKerley's Nursing Home. She was known as a wonderful storyteller who excelled at the "gift of gab." She will be missed by many, and will be remembered as a very loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend. Mrs. Hartford is survived by a daughter, Sharlyn Jordan and her husband James of Morgan, Vt.; three sons, Raymond "Sonny" Curtis Jr. his and wife Dorothea of Phoenix, Ariz., Bradley Curtis of Bloomfield, Vt., and Michael Curtis of North Stratford, N.H.; a sister, Maureen "Babsy" Ratcliffe of Clacton-on-Sea, England; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-aunt, Ella Bassett, 103, of Canaan, Vt.; two special friends, Diane Hall and Sue Garfield; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Hartford was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ormand "Jim" Hartford; a daughter, Priscilla Curtis in 1946; and two brothers, John and Dennis McAuliffe. , 33, of Windsor, Vt., died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006, at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital & Health Center in Windsor from a rare brain tumor. He was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., on Oct. 6, 1972. He graduated from high school in St. Johnsbury. Tim received his LPN from Vermont Technical College's Thompson School in Brattleboro, Vt., in 1988. He was pursuing his RN degree when he became ill. He was a nurse at Mt. Ascutney Hospital & Health Center in Windsor where he worked on the Acute, Transitional Care and Same Day Surgery units. He worked in the physician's practice until he became ill. He had a special interest in hospice care and AIDS education. He was known for his love of family, passion for life, his engaging smile and ready laugh. Survivors include his sons, Timothy and Alec Buffi; his mother and dad, Sandra and Daryl Carvell; and his partner, Christopher Richards. , 78, resident of Hancock, N.H., died Aug. 24, 2006, at his home. He was born in Barre, Vt., on May 7, 1928, a son of the late Emile and Edith (Murray) Guillette. Mr. Guillette attended grammar school in Graniteville, Vt. He and his grade school classmates have continued to meet occasionally with their favorite teacher, Evelyn McDonald. Graduating from Barre, Vt., High School in 1946, he served in the U.S. Air Force in Korea and the U.S. Army in Germany. He graduated from NH College and spent his career in the accounting profession. In 1952, he married Yvette (Carreau) Guillette of St. Johnsbury, Vt. They relocated to New Hampshire and spent 36 years as Milford, N.H. residents, raising their five children in that town. He was an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and a past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. Al had a keen interest in genealogy, loved to bake and work in his garden. He retired to Brewster, Mass., where he enjoyed playing golf. In 1999, the Guillettes returned to New Hampshire to be close to family and settled in Hancock where Alfred became active with the "Old Crocks" men's club, meeting regularly at Brady's Restaurant in Peterborough. He was also a member of the Hancock town planning committee. Beyond all else, his family was important to him. His children and grandchildren were a great source of pride and joy and he provided unconditional love and support. His sense of humor, enthusiastic (but completely out of tune) singing, and quiet presence will be deeply missed. In addition to his wife of 54 years, family members include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mike and Manda Guillette of Mancos, Colo., Paul Guillette of Santa Fe, N.M; three daughters and sons-in-law, Joanne and Bob O'Leary of Palo Alto, Calif., Denise and Tom Kretz of Milton, Mass., Louise and Barry York of Peterborough, N.H.; eight grandchildren, Emily and Sarah Russ, Dan, Michelle and Hannah Brown, Joe and Bobby Kretz and Medeleine Guillette; four brothers, Albert Guillette of West Lebanon, N.H., Robert Guillette of Hartland, Vt., Russell Guillette of El Paso, Texas, Merile Guillette of Barre, Vt.; a sister, Sally Benoit of Barre, Vt.; many nieces and nephews. , age 82, Landaff, N.H., passed away suddenly on Aug. 24, 2006, at the Littleton Regional Hospital. Lois was a lifelong resident of Littleton before moving to Landaff with her daughter Gail and her family. Lois was born in Littleton, N.H., on Aug. 3, 1924, a daughter of Arthur and Blanche (Merrill) Blodgett. She attended the Apthorp School and Littleton High School. Throughout her life in Littleton, Lois held many jobs in the local area, most recently driving the Littleton Senior Citizen van before her retirement. She bowled in the leagues when Littleton had a bowling alley and was well-known for her knitting abilities, especially sweaters, hats and mittens. She loved to read, go camping, and go out to eat. Lois was an avid Red Sox fan and loved spending time with her family. She loved all children and to many was known as "Grammie Horner." Lois leaves her daughter, Gail and her husband David Clement of Landaff, N.H.; her two sons, Brian Horner of Littleton, N.H., and Herb Horner of Lisbon, N.H.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Lois was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth E. Horner in 1992, as well as one brother and five sisters. , 62, of Elm Street, Whitefield, N.H., died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon. Mr. Stillings was born in Lancaster on Dec. 2, 1943, the son of Alfred and Agnes (Thompson) Stillings. Rodney has been a lifetime resident of the North Country including the towns of Lunenburg, Lancaster and Dalton. He has resided in Whitefield for the past year. Most of his life he has worked as a logger and for a time owned and operated the Drafty Tack Shop in Dalton. He enjoyed horses and harness making, a trade he learned from his father. Family members include a daughter, Shelly Brammer of Bradford, Mass.; and a granddaughter, Cortney Brammer. There are no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held Monday, Aug. 28, at 2 in the Cushman Cemetery, Dalton. The Rev. Paul Powers, pastor of the Union Baptist Church of St. Johnsbury, will officiate. , 75, of State Street, Groveton, N.H., died peacefully, with his family by his side, Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at Country Village-Genesis Elder Care Center were he had been a resident for about 11/2 years, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's. Born Feb. 27, 1931, in Dummer Corner, N.H., a son of the late Edgar C. and Mildred (Silver) Bacon, he was a longtime resident of Groveton. Over the years he worked for his father in the woods; Hoosier Engineering, Co.; Seaward Brown, Co.; and the state of New Hampshire Department of Transportation for more than 20 years. He was a self-made man as a washer and dryer and lawn mower repair man. Earl was the loving husband of Eleanor "Mae" (Lakin) Bacon, whom he married on May 15, 1952. He was a caring and devoted father of his children, Mark L. Bacon of Groveton and Bonnie B. Losavio and her husband Joseph Sr. of Southbridge, Mass.; a proud grandfather of his five grandchildren, Nicole B. Losavio, Joseph Losavio Jr., Brittani-Lee J. Losavio, Rebecca L. Losavio and Matthew T.E. Losavio; his four brothers, Frank Bacon and his wife Marcia of Milan, N.H., Carl Bacon of Stark, N.H., Ray Bacon of Franklin and Donald Bacon and his wife Carol of Lost Nation, N.H.; a sister, Dorothy Rich of Dummer Corner, N.H.; along with many nieces and nephews. , 78, of Danville, died Saturday morning, Aug. 26, 2006, after a short stay at Greensboro Nursing Home. Bev was born in Danville on the Currier Farm on May 26, 1928, the daughter of Donald and Olia (Bacon) Currier. Bev graduated from Danville High School in 1946 and attended Vurdett College in Boston, Mass. After college she was employed by the federal government and later by the state of Vermont. She worked in Connecticut for several years prior to relocating to San Diego in 1954, where she worked for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft for 16 years. She returned east in 1975 to marry Robert Ames. She is survived by her husband, Robert of Danville; a brother, David and his wife Janice; four nieces and nephews, Megan (Currier) Haygood and husband John of Danville, John Currier and his wife Barbara of Norwich, Vt., Joel Currier and his wife Liliana Cubero of Danville and Mary Currier of Danville; stepchildren, Susan and Martha; four grandnieces and -nephews; and several stepgrandchildren. After Bev and Bob were married in 1975, they lived in Harwich, Mass., where Bev enjoyed Cape life and entertaining family visiting from Vermont. She was employed by Dormin Co. in Orleans, Mass. Bev was a loving mother to her dog T.J. and cat Mac. She loved to watch the deer and turkeys from her kitchen window and enjoyed reminiscing about her life. Bev will be most remembered by her beautiful smile. A graveside burial will be at the convenience of the family. A reception in remembrance of Bev will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006, at 12 noon, at the Danville Congregational Church on Hill Street.

, 93, of White River Jct., Vt., died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006, at Wheelock Terrace in Hanover, N.H. He was born July 5, 1913, in Woodsville, N.H., a son of Charles J. and Katherine (O'Connor) O'Neil. He graduated from Woodsville High School in 1931 and later worked at the C.H. Goss Co in St. Johnsbury. He was married to Caroline Goss on Nov. 23, 1938 in St. Johnsbury, and they moved to White River Jct. in 1939, where they lived out the rest of their lives and he worked for the Socony Vacuum Oil Company. Mr. O'Neil served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked for the Boston & Maine Railroad in White River Jct. until 1952, when he went to work as a mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office, also in White River Jct., until retiring in 1977. After his retirement he worked at Briggs Ltd. in White River Jct. Mrs. O'Neil died in October 1994. John was an avid golfer, fisherman and downhill skier into his late 80s. He was a member of St. Anthony's Church where he served as an usher for over 50 years. He was Past Exalted Ruler of the St. Johnsbury Elks Lodge and a life member of the Hartford Elks. He was also a member of Post 26 American Legion in White River Jct. and Trout Unlimited. He was also predeceased by his son, James O'Neil, in August 2002; as well as a brother, Laurence; and a sister, Mary O'Neil. He has been cared for in his last years by his daughter-in-law Jean O'Neil. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Lisa O'Neil, Jay O'Neil and Maureen Gove; and five great-grandchildren, Justin and Jessica O'Neil, Cheryl Tourville, Jill Gove and Christopher Adams; five nieces; as well as by the caring staff at Wheelock Terrace. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, Aug. 31, at 2 p.m., at St. Anthony's Church, with burial following in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, both in White River Jct. , 67, of Hillsboro, W.Va., died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at his home. Rodney was a heavy equipment mechanic and an Air Force veteran. Rodney was born Oct. 19, 1938, in Hanover, N.H., the son of the late Robert O. and Irene Thompson Chayer. In addition to his parents, his brothers, Jack and Reg Chayer, preceded him in death. His wife, Trixie Lewis Chayer; daughters, Rhonda Chayer and Norma Chayer of Barton, Vt., Andy Young of Coventry, Vt., and Phyllis Roberson of Lima, N.H.; a sister, Toni Masure of Wheelock, Vt.; brothers, Robert Chayer of Crescent City, Fla., Richard Chayer of Spoffard, N.H., and Mark Chayer of Niantic, Conn.; and 12 grandchildren survive him. , 81, of North Haverhill, N.H., formerly of Wells River, Vt., died Aug. 27, 2006, at the Grafton County Nursing Home following an extended illness. He was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., Oct. 3, 1924, a son of George H. and Jennie (Cushing) Placey. After gradation from Wells River High School, he served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a corpsman with the 2nd Armored Division. Clayton spent many years in the real estate business, owning Placey ERA Real Estate in Wells River. He was a member of Pulaski Lodge F & AM 58 of Wells River and Mt. Sinai Shrine Temple of Burlington. Clayton married the former Irene Butcher on Oct. 8, 1949, and she predeceased him on Oct. 11, 1991. He was also predeceased by a grandson, Stuart Alan Schechter; two sisters, Lizzie and Bertha; and three brothers, Freeman, Harvey and Irving. Survivors include one daughter, Sandy Jane Schechter of New York, N.Y.; and a grandson, Adam Schechter; and several nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be Sunday, Sept. 3, at 1 p.m., at the Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch St., Woodsville, N.H. Burial will be in the Wells River Cemetery.

, also known as "Mini," of Tisbury, Mass., was a familiar person on Martha's Vineyard. She was born in Lyndonville, Vt., on Sept. 4, 1943, the daughter of Harold John and Olivette (Grenier) Rice and grew up on the family farm there. She died at her home in Tisbury on Aug. 24, 2006, after a long and courageous battle with cancer that claimed her life but could not diminish her spirit. She left this life as she lived it - surrounded by the family she cherished. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her, and remembered fondly for her kind heart, unshakable faith in God, and her complete love and devotion to her many grandchildren. She attended the Lyndonville public schools and graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1961. In March 1964, she was married to Robert Francis Berryman (deceased July 25, 2000) and their marriage was ended in 1975. She worked as a baker and a chef for most of her life, in restaurants, hotels and bakeries all along the East Coast. She was best known for creating cakes for every occasion, and especially wedding cakes. In the spring of 1988, her travels brought her to Martha's Vineyard, where she remained for the rest of her life. Her Vermont childhood home and the Great Smokey Mountains of Gatlinburg, Tenn., were her other favorite places. Her strong faith in God was a hallmark of her life, and she attended Pentecostal churches everywhere she lived. Most recently, she attended the Vineyard Assembly of God church regularly until her illness. She is survived by her three brothers, Michael W. Rice, Richard J. Rice, and John H. Rice, all of Vermont; her seven children and their families, including Barry L. Berryman of Vanceboro, N.C. and his daughter Ashley; Stephanie E. Berryman-DePaula of Tisbury and her husband Jose Claudio DePaula and their children Alekzandria Scott, Diego, Rodrigo, Thiago and Lucas; her daughter, Marcia B. DeAngelis-Ori of Lyndonville, Vt. and her children John Joseph and Julia Theresa; her son, Brian K. Berryman of Yarmouth, Maine and his wife Catherine Ann and their son Jonathan Paul; her daughter, JenniferLyn A. Berryman of Tisbury; her daughter, Leslie M. DeOliviera and her daughters Brandy Marie and Denim Lace; and her daughter, Theresa A. Berryman-Moore of Oak Bluffs and her children Emma Olivette, Savannah Margaret and Jasper Hale; and her granddaughter, Jasmine Reed of Oak Bluffs, Mass. A memorial service was held Aug. 28 at the Vineyard Assembly of God church in Tisbury with a reception immediately following. A second memorial service will be held at the Rice family farm on Pudding Hill in Lyndonville, Vt., on Friday, Sept. 1, at 3 p.m., with a reception immediately following. , a former resident of Easton, N.H., died July 1, 2006, at his home in Wilder, Vt., in the loving care of his family. Robert was born 88 years ago in Framingham, Mass., the son of Harry and Gertrude Phipps. He married his life-long love, Priscilla Alden, of Framingham, in 1941. He was a devoted husband and a dedicated father. He and Priscilla raised four children, Wendy Livingston, who lives in Red Hook, N.Y., Peter, who lives in Belmont, N.H., Jonathan, who is in Albuquerque, N.M., and Priscilla Zandi, who lives in Sugar Hill, N.H. Robert loved New Hampshire and lived the better part of his life there. He was an ingenious inventor and designer of a vast array of production and automatic machinery. He was involved in the design of the automatic pilot for airplanes during World War II, designed and built the first snow blower, and designed assorted filling machines for Hood and other dairy companies. In his leisure time, he enjoyed camping, fishing and sailing. His retirement years teemed with additional activities, soaring, panning for gold and caring for a number of wild black bears. He learned to sculpture with iron, and a number of his creations are still in evidence around Franconia, Easton and Sugar Hill, including Astrolabe in front of the Easton Town Hall. His love of music was a strong part of his life. As a boy, he played trumpet with the Rotary Boys Club Band of Framingham, which in one notable instance was directed by John Philip Sousa. He continued to play trumpet throughout his life and performed with several bands and in numerous public concerts around the North Country. In his retirement, he shared his passion for music, making marimbas, writing music and teaching marimba music to the people at the Common Ground in Littleton, N.H. He his survived by his beloved wife, Priscilla; his four children; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his brother, Russell Phipps of Woodsville, Mass. Robert was a gentle and generous man and we miss him. A memorial service will be held at the Franconia Community Church on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m.

, of St. Johnsbury, passed away at Birchwood Terrace Nursing Home in Burlington Wednesday morning, Aug. 30, 2006. She was born in St. Johnsbury Jan. 22, 1920, the 10th of 15 children born to Alphonse and Sarah (Reich) Fournier. Her husband, local barber Paul Bilodeau, passed away Feb. 2, 1986. Evelyn had to leave school to care for her siblings after her mother died at the age of 50. She received her GED later in life and then went on to Sheldon Beauty Academy to become a cosmetologist. She ran her beauty shop from her Clinton Avenue home from 1968-1979. She was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church and a member of the Daughters of Isabella. Evelyn was a very pious woman who put others first and endured many physical challenges. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Joachim and her husband John of Williston, Vt. (P.O. Box 534 05495-0534); a son, Paul of St. Johnsbury, Vt. (8 Wesley Drive 05819); two grandchildren, Timothy of Alexandria, Va., and Anthony Joachim of Patterson, N.J.; one sister, Theresa Mudgett of Plymouth Mass.; two brothers, Francis "Frank" Fournier of St. Johnsbury, and Julian "Jules" Fournier of Littleton, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews. , 82, of Lunenburg, died suddenly at his home Wednesday morning, Nov. 29, 2006. Leslie was born in East Concord, Vt., on July 16, 1924, the son of Harry P. and Lilla A. (Smith) Streeter. Raised in East Concord, he attended local schools and was a graduate of Concord High School. He went on to serve with the U.S. Navy in World War II and was stationed aboard the USS Robert E. Keller. He served throughout the Pacific Theatre including the battle of Iwo Jima. By the time of his discharge he received the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Area Medal with four stars, the Philippine Liberation Medal with one star, and the American Area Medal. Returning home he married Marian Brown of Lunenburg on March 13, 1946. He then attended the University of Vermont and Lyndon Teachers College. For 40 years he owned and operated the Lunenburg Oil Company while also running a lumber mill and farm. He later went into the construction business with his son Alan. He served the Lunenburg community as water commissioner for over 50 years and was a former town selectman. He was a proud member of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association, the Iwo Jima Survivors, the American Legion, Veteran's of Foreign Wars, and the St. Johnsbury Elks. Leslie also enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping, and was a very avid Red Sox fan. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grand and great-grandchildren. Family members include his wife, Marian of Lunenburg; two sons, Glenn C. Streeter and Leslie Alan Streeter, both of Lunenburg; a brother, Prescott Streeter of Merrimack, N.H.; a stepsister, Marion Spriggs of Merrimack, N.H.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Marjorie Jean Streeter, in 1993. Memorial visiting hours will be held Friday evening, Dec. 1, from 6-8 p.m., at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. , 57, of Woodsville, N.H., left this life peacefully surrounded by her family on Nov. 28, 2006. Pamela, the eldest child of Seth S. Lyndes Sr. and Voila O. (McGuire) Lyndes, was raised in Lyman, N.H., along with her three sisters and three brothers. Pam was a graduate of Lisbon Regional School. She continued her education at New Hampshire Technical College, earning her RN degree in nursing. During this time she was employed at Littleton Regional Hospital for 13 years. This is the way many will remember her. Many felt her compassion, gentle touch, and her smile were a healing force. During this career Pam suffered an injury to her left shoulder and had to leave her passion. However, before Pam's life had changed, she married her greatest love, Richard Houghton. Together they shared 21 years. Pam, with the support of her husband and family, changed careers and her passion, to focus on children. She started this new chapter by working with New Hampshire's Division of Children, Youth and Family Services, where she worked for 13 years with children and their foster families. Once again she furthered her education by receiving her bachelors of science degree in human services. Pam's love of helping others was not just for children and families; she also loved cats and opened the home she shared with Richard to all the neighborhood strays and adopted the majority of them. Pam enjoyed photo taking, cooking, reading and the well-being of others. Pam is survived by her husband, Richard E. Houghton of Woodsville; her sisters, Jewel Nelson and her husband Neal of Lisbon, N.H., Paulina Garceau of Littleton, N.H., and Melody Hawkins of Rutland; her brothers, Seth S. Lyndes Jr. and his wife Arlene of Woodsville, and Kim Lyndes and his wife Lurette of Lyman; her mother-in-law, Muriel Houghton of St. Johnsbury; a brother-in-law, Lee and his wife Sylvia Houghton of St. Johnsbury; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces. , 81, of Hill Street, Barre, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 29, 2006, at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin. Born May 15, 1925, in Groton, she was the daughter of Walter and Doris (Batchelder) Carpenter. She moved to Bradford with her family in 1931, attending Bradford Schools and graduating from Bradford Academy in 1943. In 1946, she married C. Elliott Hurley. Following their marriage, they made their home in Boston, returning to Barre in 1948. They moved to Trow Hill in 1950 where she had since resided. They divorced in 1966. Prior to her marriage she had worked for the Bradford Journal Opinion in the printing department. She later was office nurse for Dr. F.P. Dwinell in Bradford. In 1966, she joined the staff at the Times-Argus where she was a proofreader and advertising compositor. She retired in 1990 after 24 years of service. She enjoyed reading British mysteries, historical books and anything that provided her new information. An avid Red Sox fan, she also enjoyed crossword puzzles, Scrabble and music of all kinds. She was a member of the Church of the Good Shepard (Episcopal) in Barre. Survivors include her son, Kevin Hurley and his wife Dorothy of Barre Town; her daughters, Kathleen Proia and her companion Frederick Mitchell of Concord, and Karen Barofsky and her husband Daniel of Sioux Falls, S.D.; four grandchildren, Aaron and Alexis Proia, Jessica Barnes, and Joshua Blodgett; and three great-grandchildren, Jazmine Pott, Douglas Morales Jr. and Emma Proia. , 76, of Monroe Road, Bath, N.H., died Dec. 2, 2006, at Littleton Regional Hospital. She was born in Bath, N.H., April 10, 1930, the daughter of Elie and Germaine (Lamarre) Roy. Rita trained as a registered nurse at Laconia Hospital in Laconia, NH. She married Harry A. Lackie Jr. on May 9, 1953. Since 1953 they owned and operated the Lackie Dairy Farm on Monroe Road. During her farming years, Rita was a devoted wife and mother of eight children. She was a communicant of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church. As a member of the church she spent many hours with the annual fair and supper, with the Women's Club, the church choir and recording church history. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry A. Lackie Jr., on May 26, 1999; and two brothers, Martin L. Roy and Paul E. Roy. Survivors include four daughters, Evelyn R. Perron of Manchester, N.H., Cecile M. Lackie of Springfield, Va., Gloria M. Gidari of Deering, N.H., and Sharon R. Lackie of Woodsville, N.H.; four sons, Joe Lackie of Middleton, Mass., Al Lackie of Bath, N.H., Steve Lackie of Bath, and Ron Lackie of Woodsville; three sisters, Louise Forcier of Falls Church, Va., Irene Guilmette of Milford, Conn., and Anne-Marie Dauphinais of Lebanon, N.H.; 10 brothers, Victor Roy of Woodsville, Patrick Roy of Putnam, Conn., Roger Roy of New Haven, Conn., Bernard Roy of Newbury, Vt., Ernest Roy of Bath, Camille Roy of North Haverhill, Philip Roy of Woodsville, Richard Roy of Woodsville, Norman Roy of Bath, and Clement Roy of Woodsville; 10 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours will be on Monday, Dec. 4, from 5-7:30 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch St., Woodsville, N.H. The funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 10 a.m., at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 15 Pine St., Woodsville, N.H., with the Rev. Daniel J. Sinabaldi, officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Bath, N.H. , 75, of Pittstown, N.Y., died Dec. 2, 2006 after a short stay at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, N.Y. Born in Walden, Vt., he was the son of the late Earl and Theresa McGoff. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps post-World War II and was a member of the VFW. He retired in 1985 from the trucking industry and was a member of the local 294 Teamsters Union for 23 years. Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, and stock-car racing, having been a driver in his early years. He is survived by seven children; 23 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Daniel D. Purcell Funeral Home, 510 Pawling Ave., Parkview Court, Troy, on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. A small, private ceremony will be held on Wednesday. , 64, of Island Pond, died peacefully Dec. 1, 2006, in Newport. She was born May 20, 1942, in Island Pond, a daughter of Joseph and Bernice (Bingham) Daniels. On Sept. 15, 1962, she married Earl Gray, who survives her. Mrs. Gray lived all her life in Island Pond. She was head teller for the Community National Bank in Island Pond. She also served as treasurer of the Island Pond Historical Society for many years, was a member of the home dem club and was a den mother for the Boy Scouts. She is survived by her husband, Earl Gray of Island Pond; a sister, Helen Corliss of Island Pond; and by brothers and sisters-in-law, Marilyn Wade of Island Pond, William and Gleigh Heath of Island Pond, Anna Johnson of Orleans, Patty Gray of St. Johnsbury, Charlotte Gunn of Island Pond, Virginia and Alan Wing of Island Pond, Gunda Gray of Danville, and Niles and Monique Gray of Island Pond; by several nieces and nephews; and a good friend, Marilyn Page of Island Pond. She was predeceased by her father, Joseph Daniels, in 1962, and her mother, Bernice Bingham Daniels, in 1980; and by brothers-in-law, Glenn Gray, Robert Gunn, Robert Johnson and Joseph Wade. , 83, of Lyndon, passed away at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab Center, Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, surrounded by her family. She was born Oct. 15, 1923, in Walden, the daughter of David and Marjorie (Gray) Cassady. She was a graduate of Lyndon Institute and a member of the Lyndonville United Methodist Church. On Dec. 25, 1941, she married Reginald Peck, who predeceased her on April 14, 1997. She is survived by four daughters, Regina Lee of Chattanooga, Tenn., Juanita Williamson of Lyndon, Wanda and her husband Steve Wilkie of West Burke, and Ramona Humphrey of Havre de Grace, Md.; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three brothers; two sisters; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers. There will be a private graveside service for the family at the Lyndon Center Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours. , 60, of Wells River, Vt., a quiet person who walked softly through the world, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2006. He was born Jan. 12, 1946, in France, of a French mother, Georgette Kopp, and an American soldier, Lester A. McLure of Ryegate, Vt. Alain lived both in France and Vermont. He was a pacifist, traveling man, noninterventionist and horticulturalist interested in seed saving and original species of plants and animal. He leaves a brother; a nephew; a cousin; and aunts and uncles. A service will be held Saturday, Dec. 10, 2006, at noon at Baba-a-Louis Bakers, followed by a luncheon, and a reception until 4 p.m. We welcome anyone who knew him. Baba-a-Louis is located on Route 11, West Chester, Vt., one mile west of the intersection of 103 and Route 11.

, 71, of Bradford, Vt., died Monday, Dec. 4, 2006, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., after a long illness. He was born on March 4, 1935, in Marlboro, Mass., the son of Carlton and Marion (Hosmer) Allen. He attended schools in Marlboro. Norman was also a Navy veteran. He owned and operated N.C. Allen Construction Company in Marlboro, and throughout Northern New England. He than moved to Bradford, where he continued with his company, N.C. Allen, and also owned and operated Dreamsend Farm with his wife Louise. Norman was a member from 1961-75, and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Marlboro, Mass., from 1973-74. He was also a member of the Bradford United Church of Christ. He enjoyed sailing, skiing, farming and his cattle. He is survived by his wife, Louise Allen of Bradford; two daughters, Kimberly Pugh of Newbury, Mass., and Annette Shaw of Bradford; four sons, Kenneth Allen of Marlboro, Keith Allen of Nashua, N.H., Kevin Heath of Wilmington, Del., and Stephen Heath-Donovan of Framingham, Mass.; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his former wife, Mary Allen of Marlboro. He was predeceased by one brother and one sister. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006, at 1 p.m., in Bradford United Church of Christ with the Rev. Harvey Bartlett officiating. Visiting hours will be held on Friday evening from 6-7:30 at Hale Funeral Home, 187 Upper Plain, Bradford, Vt. Burial will be held at a later date.
