, 58, of Raleigh, N.C., passed away Monday, May 9, 2005, at Rex Healthcare. He was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., the son of the late Hazel B. Rivers, and was a resident of Raleigh for 40 years. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and recently retired from Kone Elevator after over 30 years of service. Bob is survived by his wife of 35 years, Patsy; son, Chris Rivers; daughter, Kim Blalock and her husband Steven, and their two sons, Jordan and Chase; son, Drew Rivers and Jessica Stevens, all of Raleigh; brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Mia Heath of Germanton, N.C., Don and Donna Heath of Clarksville, Tenn., Jim and Barb Heath of St. Johnsbury, Vt., and Dave and Pam Rivers of Garner, N.C.; a special aunt, Leona Phillips of Baltimore, Md.; mother-in-law, Becky Johnson of Wendell; several nephews and nieces; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Tom Rivers. Bob was easy-going, enjoyed sport bike racing, playing cards, and spending time with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, co-workers, dogs, granddogs and all who knew him. A memorial service will be held at The Church of the Good Shepherd, 125 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, N.C., Thursday, May 26, 2005, at 10 a.m. There will be a reception to celebrate his life following the service in the Shepherd's Hall. Rosemary Hirst Smith ....show
, 86, of Grove Street, Lancaster, N.H., died May 29, 2005, at her home. Rosemary was born Feb. 5, 1919, in Detroit, Mich., in a house her father built. Her parents, immigrants from England, were Charles and Clara Hirst. Rosemary graduated from McKenzie High School and Wayne State University and taught public school in Michigan for three years. She attended Chicago Theological Seminary from 1943-46, graduating with an MA in religious education. She taught religion in Troy, Ohio, for two years, for the Troy Council of Churches. In 1948, Rosemary married Curtis Smith in Detroit, and moved to Canaan, Vt., where Curtis was a pastor in the Methodist Church. After their three children were in school, Rosemary took up teaching again, tutoring both children and adults in the states of Maryland, Delaware and New Hampshire. Rosemary was a member of the Methodist Church since childhood. She always worked in the church, especially in Sunday school and United Methodist Women. Rosemary was a member of the local chapter of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG). She was an avid reader with wide-ranging tastes, and was a diligent correspondent, keeping in touch through letters with family and friends everywhere. She was a great one for walking places. One of her favorite hikes was Pine Mountain in blueberry season. She loved card games and all sorts of word puzzles, especially crossword puzzles. Rosemary is survived by her husband of 57 years, Curtis W. Smith; her children, Margaret C. Smith of Bainbridge Island, Wash., Susanna P. Smith of Seattle, Wash., and Philip R. Smith of Providence, R.I.; and grandchildren, Heron and Emerson Greenesmith. She has a surviving sister, Marjorie Hirst Parrish of Chicago, Ill.; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Two brothers, Mason and Charles Hirst, died previously. Rosemary was much loved by her family and friends for her kindness, sensitivity, intelligence and warmth. She will be greatly missed. A memorial service for Rosemary will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at Christ United Methodist Church, Lancaster. A reception will follow at the home at 11 Grove St. The family requests "no flowers." , 69, of Greensboro, Vt., died Sunday, May 29, 2005, at her residence. She was born July 5, 1955, in Glover. The daughter of the late Fred and Ethel (Keith) Miles. She graduated from Lyndon Institute in the Class of 1954. On June 28, 1954, she married Robert Stanley Snelling in Claremont, N.H. For more than 34 years, Joanne and her husband made their home in Connecticut, and in the early 1990s, they returned to Vermont, making their home in Greensboro. Mrs. Snelling was a homemaker. She enjoyed the time that she spent with her family. Other enjoyments include walking, knitting, sewing and visiting with friends and neighbors. Survivors include a son, Aaron Snelling and his wife Shannon of Wauregan, Conn.; a daughter, Wanda Snelling of Danielson, Conn.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Wayne Miles of Pownal; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Snelling; a son, Bernard Snelling; a daughter, Sara Snelling; a brother, Maynard Miles; and a sister, Marjory Blair. Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2005, at 10 a.m., at the Northern Vermont Funeral Home, 60 Elm St., Hardwick. of Mt. Pleasant St. in St. Johnsbury, passed away at NVRH Wednesday evening, June 1, 2005, at the age of 90. Her husband, Chauncey W. Dean, predeceased her. She was born in Lyndonville on June 22, 1914, the daughter of Robert and Gertrude (Beattie) Blake. She worked for six years as a clerk at Randall and Whitcomb's on Main Street in St. Johnsbury. She is survived by her daughter, Roberta Cusack of Westborough, Mass. (2202 Windsor Ridge Dr. 01581); four grandchildren, Cynthia Boulay, Dean Cusack, Erin Cusack and Patricia Fisher; six great-grandchildren, Tammera Silva, Marissa Silva, Dylan Cusack, Sierra Rakes, Amber Rakes and Matea Cusack; one sister, Katherine Caputi of Newport, R.I. She was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Howard Eastman of St. Johnsbury; nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held Monday, June 6, at 3 p.m. at Mt. (Flanders) Dickerman, she was born Jan. 7, 1930 in Lyndonville. Marion loved her Pentecostal faith, her dog Sparky, and she enjoyed puzzles. She was a great homemaker. , of Clarks Avenue in St. Johnsbury and summer resident of Miles Pond, passed away unexpectedly at the NVRH emergency room early Friday morning, June 3, 2005 at the age of 88. She was born in Swanton on June 22, 1916, the daughter of Patrick and Agnes (O'Connor) Ward, as Irish as the day is long. She came to St. Johnsbury to attend St. Johnsbury Academy and graduated in 1935; she maintained an ardent love for the Academy all her life. A tireless worker for Academy alumni projects, the Academy Alumni Association co-awarded their 1992 Northeast Kingdom Service Award to Sheila. She was eagerly anticipating her 70th reunion and had attended a meeting earlier this week in preparation of this weekend's festivities. She will be missed terribly by those at the Academy who worked with her. Sheila retired from Central Vermont Public Service as district account manager for St. Albans, St. Johnsbury and Bradford. She served the company for 40 years and was well known throughout the company and Rutland headquarters. She was an active member of CVPS credit union and attended their annual meetings. Sheila was a strong parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church and was active in church affairs. She was a longtime volunteer at the Cherry Wheel Gift Shop at NVRH. She loved her summers staying in her beloved little camp ("Leprechaun Hideout!") on Miles Pond and became dear friends with Mary and Mel Richardson next door. A resident of Clarks Avenue for the past 44 years, she lived with her mother, Agnes, until her passing in April of 1983. Since then, she had made numerous trips to Ireland. She is survived by her adopted family: George and Julie Campbell of Chapin, S.C. (505 Wateroak Trail 29036), their children Erica, Heather, and Josh and their families. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, June 8, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. Following committal services at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, the Academy will host a reception following at Brantview. There will be no visiting hours. Please omit flowers. Born Sept. 13, 1929, in Lyndonville, Vt., he was the son of Ernest and Rose Anna (Hamel) Daigle. Homer was self-employed in the heating and plumbing business for 40 years. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a communicate of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was predeceased by two children, Linda Daigle Jones, and Gary Daigle; three brothers, Albert Daigle, Lucian Daigle, and Alfred Daigle; and one sister, Betty Straw. Survivors include his wife, Judith (Carr) Daigle of Granville; six sons, Lawrence Daigle and his wife Linda, Dwayne Daigle and his wife Elaine, Mike Daigle, all of Granville, Todd Daigle of Rhode Island, Mark Daigle and his wife Jean of West Burke, Vt., and Jay Daigle of Tennessee; three daughters, Barbara Arquette and her husband Lyn of Fort Edward, N.Y., Vicky Hale and her husband Steve of Granville, and Karen Campbell and her husband Terry of South Royalton, Vt.; one brother, Ronald Daigle and his wife Rachel of Granville; and 21 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. , of St. Johnsbury, Vt., passed away peacefully at home on a beautiful Sunday dawn, June 5, 2005, with her family by her side. She was born in Apalachin, N.Y., on July 27, 1906, the daughter of George and Alma (Howe) Gibson. She and her first husband Stanley Ford resided in Apalachin, N.Y. He predeceased her after a marriage of 47 years. She worked as a bank teller for the Endicott Trust Co. Leonora and her husband Eugene F. Ellingwood Jr., were married 10 years just this past Friday, June 3. It was a very happy and content 10 years. She is survived by her husband, Gene of St. Johnsbury (37 Dundee St. 05819); two sons, Donald Ford and his wife Mary Jo of Oshkosh, Wis., and Robert Ford and his wife Gloria of Bakersfield, Calif.; two stepchildren, Linda Pollock and her husband William of Bethel, Vt., and Mark Ellingwood and his wife Rena of Newark, Vt.; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; Eugene's grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Judy Daigneault and her husband Gerard of St. Johnsbury. She was predeceased by a sister, Fredora Huntington; and by a granddaughter. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 7, at 11 a.m., at Sayles Funeral Home, with Mr. John Sleeper officiating. of Gallup Mills, Vt., passed away Friday, June 3, 2005, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab Center at the age of 84. He was born in Penobscott, Maine, on Oct. 30, 1920, the son of Charles C. and Mildred (Firres) Mosher. He was an Army World War II veteran of the European Theatre. He graduated from the Vocational School in St. Johnsbury and worked around St. Johnsbury as an auto mechanic, retiring from Quality Motors. Everybody knew him as "the auto mechanic." He is survived by one son, Brian Mosher and his wife Fatima of Lyndonville (P.O. Box 1404 05851); four grandchildren, Charles L. Mosher and his wife Jody of West Burke, Brian Mosher Jr. and his wife Crystal of Newark, Jeff Mosher of Sheffield, and Sanita Mosher of West Burke; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth Blay and his wife Dricilla of Lyndonville, and Robert Blay and his wife Florence of Londonderry, N.H.; and four nephews and one niece. , formerly of Vernon, Vt., passed away Friday, June 3, 2005, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab Center, where she had resided for the past several months. She was born in East Haven on Aug. 12, 1918, the daughter of Arnon and Glendola (Ward) Austin. She graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy. In the 1940s and 1950s, Mildred was credit manager at the Sears Roebuck store in St. Johnsbury. She went on to nurses training and worked as a licensed practicing nurse at several St. Johnsbury locations including the old St. Johnsbury Hospital and Tower Nursing Home, and for several years at the Advent Christian Nursing Home in Vernon. Upon retirement she lived in the Advent retirement home and when her health failed, resided at the nursing home there. Her brother and sister-in-law survive her, Delmar and Grace Austin of St. Johnsbury (530 Lafayette St. 05819); also three nieces and their families, Elaine Savage and her husband Timothy of South Carolina, Janice Ely and her husband Richard of East St. Johnsbury, and Kathleen Greenwood of Florida; and several cousins. Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 11, at 2 p.m., at the Woodmont Cemetery on Route 114 above East Burke village with Pastor Paul Powers officiating.

died peacefully at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton, Vt., May 23, 2005. Her daughter, Cynthia Marie Karasinski, was by her side. She had been suffering from the side effects of diabetes for many years. She was born in Shelton, Conn., on May 15, 1919, the daughter of Eleanora (Majewska) and Anton Madalinski. She attended high school in Ansonia, Conn., and worked at the U.S. Rubber Co. during and after World War II. She was a mother and homemaker while raising her three children and two stepchildren. Among her many interests were dancing, swimming, bowling and cooking. In her 60s and 70s, she was still a preferred dance partner, for her lightness and grace on the dance floor. She was a tremendously strong swimmer; in her youth, she swam the width of the Housatonic River. She was also a great pastry chef, as her mother was before her, and often gave presents of cakes and pastries to her friends, co-workers and family. A woman of great fun and kindness, she will sorely be missed by family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Wasil Zayatz, in 1985, and continued to reside in Connecticut until 1998, when she moved to Barton, Vt. She was predeceased by three sisters, Sophia Sorrentino, Katherine Schlitter and Estelle Schlitter. She is survived by a brother, Edward Madalinski of Milford, Conn.; and a sister, Eleanor Piotrowski of Ansonia, Conn. She is also survived by three children, Richard Kirpas of Old Lyme, Conn., Alan Kirpas and his wife Elizabeth of Hingham, Mass., and Cynthia Karasinski and her husband John of Barton, Vt. She leaves five grandchildren, David Kirpas of Old Lyme, Conn., Alice Kirpas and Margaret Kirpas of Hingham, Mass., and Jared Karasinski and Michael Karasinski of Barton, Vt. There will be calling hours at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Barton, Vt., from 7-9 p.m., Friday, June 10. There will be a funeral mass on Saturday, June 11, in Barton, Vt., at St. Paul's Church at 10 a.m. Virginia will be buried in Connecticut at a later date. of Williston, Vt., passed away Friday, June 3, 2005, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington after a long illness. He was 47. He was born in Wilmington, Del., on Feb. 1, 1958, the son of Jane (Miller) Ballard and George A. Ballard, former assistant headmaster at St. Johnsbury Academy. He was a 1976 graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy where he co-captained both the football and baseball teams. Jay was a lifelong Oriole and Colts fan having grown up in Delaware. He attended Miami Dade University in 1977 and graduated in business from Lyndon State in 1979. He was a 15-year employee with Armstrong Construction Corp. in Underhill. Jay loved the beauty of Vermont (camping, biking, fishing), and time spent with family and close friends. People who came to know Jay were drawn by his warmth and sincerity. His closest friends were Craig Armstrong, Stuart Hall and Kenny Gaudette. He is survived by 8-year-old daughter, Jessica Helen Jane Ballard, stepdaughter, Sarah Snow Ballard, and former wife and best friend Elizabeth "Sib" (Hall) Ballard, all of Williston; stepmother, Lillian Dauphin Ballard of St. Johnsbury; brothers Peter Ballard of St. Johnsbury, Allen and his wife Patty of Los Angeles, Calif.; two aunts, Diane Grieco of Andover, Mass., and Mildred Curry and her husband David of Hingham, Mass.; and several cousins. Graveside services will be held this Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Ballard family lot in the East Craftsbury Cemetery. , 86, passed away Sunday, June 5, 2005, at her Bethlehem residence. She was born June 5, 1919, in Berlin, N.H., the daughter of Lester and Leona (Willett) Clinch. Margaret, who preferred being called Pearl, enjoyed her role as a homemaker. She was skilled in many crafts and always was involved with projects. She is survived by her loving husband, Armond Rousseau of Bethlehem; a daughter, Pauline Reinhard; a son, Arnold Rousseau; two grandsons, Mark and David Reinhard; and a great-grandson, Owin Reinhard. There will be no calling hours. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, June 8, at 11 a.m., at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Twin Mountain. , 50, of Island Pond, Vt., formerly of Kutztown, Pa., died Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., from injuries received in a bicycle accident in Island Pond on Sunday. He was born in Reading, Pa., on Sept. 14, 1954, a son of John and Ruth (Gromis) Foster. He graduated from Kutztown, Pa., High School in 1972. Following graduation, he established himself as a contractor around 1979 in Kutztown. He was married to Lisa Eshleman in Reading, Pa., on Sept. 19, 1991, and they made their home in Kutztown. In 1996 they established Foster's Trading Post Toy Store in Kutztown, which they operated until January 2005. In August 2004, they moved to Island Pond. He was a member of the BMW Motorcycle Club, the Willie Nelson Fan Club, and the Local Laborer-Contractor Union in Boyertown, Pa. He was also an avid motorcycle enthusiast. Most of all he was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Lisa of Island Pond, Vt.; his parents, Ruth and John Foster of Kutztown, Pa.; five children, Amanda Thompson of Monterey, Calif., Keith Foster of Kutztown, Pa., and Roy, Jane and Harry Foster, all of Island Pond, Vt.; two grandchildren; a brother, Timothy P. Foster of Orwigsburg, Pa.; aunts, uncles, many nieces, nephews and cousins; and a large extended family. Memorial services will be held on Thursday evening, June 9, at 7 p.m., at Brighton State Park's Day Use Beach on Lake Shore Drive in Island Pond, Vt. Another memorial service will be held on June 19 at 2 p.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ in Kutztown, Pa. , 85, widow of Col. Bertram J. Ellis, died peacefully in bed early Tuesday morning, June 7, 2005. She was at her home with the birds singing and the smell of lilacs outside the bedroom window. She was born in Temple, Texas, Aug. 24, 1919, the daughter of Charles and Eddie (Scott) Dunlop. Growing up in Chula Vista, Nell considered the San Diego area as her hometown and Kathryn Perkins Oberschulte of Chula Vista her oldest and dearest friend. Nell graduated from Sweetwater Union High School in National City, Calif., in 1936. She attended San Diego State college and graduated from San Diego County Hospital Nurses Training School in 1940. Nell entered the Army Nurse Corps in April 1942, serving with the 159th General Hospital in England during World War II. While stationed in El Paso, Texas, she met and married Maj. Bertram J. Ellis of Hamilton, Mont., who predeceased her in 1979. Nell was discharged from the Army Nurse Corps as a captain. She lived in many places in the United States and the world prior to moving to Vermont to be closer to her family. Survivors include two children, daughter Carroll P. Ruhlman and her husband Donald of St. Johnsbury, and son John Scott Ellis of White River Junction, Vt.; two granddaughters, Jennifer Ruhlman and Leisha Daly and her husband Sean; sister-in-law, Mrs. N. Kendall, and niece and nephew Jan and Mark. Nell was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church for over 20 years and had been a member of NVRH Auxiliary since coming to St. Johnsbury. She also had served in various functions on the board of Caledonia Home Health since 1980. At Nell's request, there will be no visiting hours or funeral. , 71, of Lyndon, Vt., died peacefully at her home Tuesday evening June 7, 2005, after a five-year battle with breast cancer. She was born Feb. 9, 1934, in St. Johnsbury, daughter of the late Kenneth K. and Bernice E. (Bailey) Kaiser. A graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1951, Mrs. Moulthrop received her bachelor of science degree from Atlantic Union College in South Lancaster, Mass. Mrs. Moulthrop worked as a school teacher for 39 years. She retired from the St. Johnsbury School system after 31 years as a science teacher in the middle school. After retirement, she worked as a volunteer at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. An active member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in St. Johnsbury, Mrs. Moulthrop was the oldest charter member there. She served as the church treasurer for more than 30 years, as well as holding many other offices throughout the years. Mrs. Moulthrop enjoyed traveling, reading, crossword puzzles, computers, and feeding and watching the wild birds in her back yard, as well as the many other animals that happened by. Survivors include a brother, Kenneth K. Kaiser and his wife Iris of Connecticut; three sisters, Louise Perry of Michigan, Shirley Kalmansson of Leominster, Mass., and Eldora Kaiser of Clinton, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother and his wife, Linwood and Joyce Kaiser; and two brothers-in-law, Carrol Perry and Birgir Kalmansson. Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 12, at 11 a.m., at the Seventh-day Adventist Church on Southard Street in St. Johnsbury, with pastor Jack Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot at River Bank Cemetery in Stowe, Vt. Friends may meet with the family Saturday evening from 6-8 at the Guibord Funeral Home. , 93, of West Burke, Vt., died peacefully at her home Thursday, June 9, 2005. She was born May 24, 1912, in Brockton, Mass. She graduated from Bridgewater High School in Bridgewater, Mass., and went on to receive her bachelor's degree in theology at Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Mass. Geneva was married to Charles L. Hooper in 1939 and lived in Bridgewater, Mass., until his death in 1962. In 1964 she married G. Reginald Young and moved to West Burke. Geneva was an active member in the Grange, Eastern Star, Sutton-Burke Homemakers, the United Methodist Women and the West Burke United Methodist Church. She devotedly played the organ there and at other local churches for over 30 years. She enjoyed making various crafts and especially loved making quilts for her friends and family. She also loved working in her garden with her plants and flowers. Survivors include her children, Rogers C. Hooper of North Falmouth, Mass., Avery L. Hooper of West Burke, Vt., and Charlene A. Hooper of Cullom, Ill.; a stepson, Albert F. Hooper of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; stepdaughters, Marion H. Hickey of Plantation, Fla., and Eunice Craig of Newport, Vt.; a brother, John McKenna of Plympton, Mass.; and many grandsons and granddaughters, great-grandchildren and nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her husband, G. Reginald Young; and a brother, Holton Rogers. A funeral service will be held Monday, June 13, at 2 p.m., at the West Burke United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery.

, 85, husband of Muriel C. Brown, died Wednesday, June 8, 2005, at Littleton Regional Hospital. He was born in Littleton, N.H., April 2, 1920, the son of Charles and Jessie Moore Brown. Harold graduated from Bethlehem High School in 1938. He lived in Bethlehem his whole life. Family members include his wife of 64 years, Muriel C. Brown; two daughters, Carol Boucher and her husband Bruce, and Clare Brown and her husband Bruce, all of Bethlehem; grandchildren and great-grandchildren include Lauren Corliss and her husband Mark and their son Caleb of Marion, Mass., Ellen O'Malley of Madison, Ga., Karen Abraham and her husband Michael and their daughters Emma and Grace of Tuftonboro, N.H., and Derek Brown and his wife Tandy and their children Brady, Calyn and Logan of Bethlehem, N.H.; a sister, Charlotte Taylor of Exeter, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Meg, in 1971; and a brother, Douglas Brown in 1989. Harold worked for Churchill's Dairy and also for Churchill and Brown, which he later owned and operated for many years. He was happiest when working on his bulldozer. He was a member of Maplewood Lodge 100, I.O.O.F., for 65 years. Harold was a member of Durrell Methodist Church in Bethlehem. He also served as a precinct commissioner, U.S. Forest Fire Warden, special officer for the police department, and was an engineer with the Bethlehem Fire Department for many years. , 88, formerly of West Main Street, Lunenburg, Vt., died Thursday morning, June 9, 2005, at Country Village Health Care Center, Lancaster, N.H. Mr. Fernald was born in Dover, N.H., on Jan. 6, 1917, the son of Carl S. Fernald Sr. and Marie (Aldrich) Fernald. Raised in New Hampshire, Carl moved to Lunenburg at 12 years of age. He served in the U.S. Army infantry in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He resided in Lancaster for 12 years, later returning to Lunenburg. For 19 years he was employed at the Gilman Paper Company and then was a house painter for 12 years. He was also a longtime caretaker of Riverside Cemetery, South Lunenburg. An avid horseshoe player, he was the winner of many tournaments in his day. His competitors affectionately knew him as "The Legend." He competed in leagues in South Ryegate, Lancaster and Lyndonville. The Lancaster VFW holds the annual "Carl Fernald Tournament." He retired from competition at 79 years old. He was also an avid basketball and baseball (Red Sox) fan. He was a member of the John W. Weeks VFW Post 3041, Lancaster. He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Nila Powers of Lunenburg, and Geneva Blay of Schenectady, N.Y.; nieces and nephews. His wife, Joyce Katherine (Pond) Fernald, and a son, Michael Fernald, predeceased him. At Carl's request there are no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 11, at 2 p.m. at the Lunenburg Methodist Church. The Rev. Henry E. Cheney, pastor, will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in the Riverside Cemetery, South Lunenburg. , the first man drafted for World War II from Albany, Vt., died at St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab Center Wednesday evening, June 8, 2005. He was born in Abitibi, Province of Quebec, Canada, Sept. 8, 1919, the son of Henry and Evelina (Leduc) Tremblay. The family traveled down the St. Lawrence River seaway when he was a child, living in St. Alphonse, Canada, then emigrated to Vermont. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and entered service Nov. 19, 1940, as a Canadian citizen, and fought in Africa, Sicily and France. He served in the Tunisian and Sicilian Campaigns and the invasion of France. He was awarded the EAME Theater Ribbon with three stars, the Purple Heart, Oak Leaf Cluster, as well as the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Ribbon and the American Defense Service Ribbon. He was wounded in July 1943 in the African Theater and again in August 1944 in the European Theater while invading France. He received his honorable discharge on Feb. 23, 1945. He was married to the late Elva Peters in Maryland in November 1942. She and Ted returned to Vermont when he returned from the Army and owned and operated the Y-D Cafe in Newport. They later moved to Albany where they operated a dairy farm for many years. Elva died in March 2003 after over 60 years of marriage. Ted was a communicant of St. John of the Cross Catholic Church in East Albany and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Newport. He leaves two children, a daughter, Theresa Racine and her husband, Jacques, of Lunenburg, Vt., and a son, Theodore H. Tremblay and his longtime companion, Anita Brown, of Irasburg, Vt.; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also leaves a sister, Adrenne Gauthier of Wilder, Vt.; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Elva; three brothers, twins who died as infants, and Gerard Tremblay; and two sisters, Beatrice LaBounty and Jeanne Peters. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 11, at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Craftsbury. Interment will follow in the Albany Village Cemetery.
