Bernard A. Sylce ....show
, 87, a Burke Hollow, Vt., resident, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2005, at his home following a bout with cancer. Born Dec. 23, 1917, in Charlestown, N.H., he is the son of the late John and G. Blanch (Bradley) Sylce. Bernie served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Ila Deblois and worked for a time on the Canadian Pacific Railroad, then was a machinist at Vermont Tap & Die for 33 years. Bernie had many hobbies including sugaring, hunting and apple trees. He even grafted his own brand of apples, Bernie's Wild Gold. He collected antique bells, was an avid skier and motorcycle rider until the age of 82, and loved to dance. He was interested in the well-being of others and enjoyed helping them with whatever they needed at the time. He will be missed. Bernie especially loved living in the Hollow and was very proud to have taken care of the Burke Hollow Meeting House for 50 years. He loved and lived each day and felt he had the best life and lived in the best place on earth. He had remarked many times that he was a rich man. To Bernie, his wife and family were his greatest joy. He will be missed dearly. Bernie is survived by his loving wife of nearly 64 years, Ila Sylce; a son, Mike Sylce and his companion Sue; daughters, Judy Gorham and Vicki Brooks and her husband Bob; three grandsons, Chris and Josh Sylce, and Steve Brooks; three great-grandchildren, Kelly, Andy and Ryan Brooks; a sister, Dorcas O'Neil; a brother- and sister-in-law, Clifton and Marjorie Blake; and many special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Harry Sylce. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, May 24, between the hours of 5-7 p.m., at the family home, located at 53 Sugar House Road in Burke Hollow. A memorial service will be Wednesday, May 24, at 10 a.m., at the Burke Hollow Meeting House. Interment will follow in the Meeting House Cemetery. Armonde Madore ....show
passed away Friday, May 20, 2005, at NVRH at the age of 95. She had lived in her apartment at 134 Church St. in St. Johnsbury for the past 35 years. She was born in St. Rose, Quebec, one of six children born to Arthur and Albertine (Provencial) Poliquin. Her mother Albertine later remarried Mr. Joseph Morin of St. Johnsbury. In her working years Armonde worked 16 years for the Mrs. John Babbitt Estate in Walpole, N.H., and spent winter months in Florida. She resigned from the Babbitt estate and returned to St. Johnsbury in 1966 to care for her aging parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Morin. Armonde was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church. She did volunteer work at The Rehab Center for 20 years and especially enjoyed her large Poliquin/Donna family events and gatherings. She was predeceased by one sister, Mrs. Marie Donna, in 1987; and four brothers, Maurice and Robert Poliquin, both in 1980, Rosaire Poliquin in 1983, and Armand Poliquin in 1992. She is survived by her many nieces and nephews who held her in high regard. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Jeannette Poliquin, who resides at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab Center; and by the Barrett family who thought of Armonde as part of their family. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, May 24, at 2 p.m., at St. John the Evangelist Church. Following the Mass, she will be cremated and interred in the Morin lot at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. , 17, of Greensboro Bend, died late Saturday, May 21, 2005, at the Copley Hospital in Morrisville following a courageous battle with Muscular Dystrophy. His loving family was by his bedside. He was born May 11, 1988, in Morrisville, the son of Joey and Audrey (Metevier) Hall Sr. He attended Greensboro public schools and was a junior at Hazen Union School in Hardwick. Clinton was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Greensboro Bend. He loved his yellow Lab, Anna Rose, and was very happy to have been able to donate his school community service work time to the Lamoille County Animal League in Morrisville. He enjoyed summer camp at the Clover Patch Camp for Muscular Dystrophy in New York, country music, NASCAR races, watching movies, his PlayStation, the Boston Red Sox, hot rods, cars burning rubber and taking walks. Survivors include his parents, Joey and Audrey Hall Sr. of Greensboro Bend; two brothers, Eddie J. Hall of East Hardwick, and Joey L. Hall Jr. of Irasburg; maternal grandparents, Mary and Rodney Churchill of East Hardwick; paternal grandparents, Shirley and Ken Hall of Stannard; two nephews, Kyle J. McCoy of Irasburg, and Jacob R. Hall of East Hardwick; as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins. Visiting hours will be held this evening, from 7-9 p.m. at the Northern Vermont Funeral Home, 60 Elm St., Hardwick. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Church in Greensboro Bend, with the Rev. John Hamilton celebrant. , 89, longtime resident of St. Johnsbury, Vt., passed away Dec. 19, 2004, in Albany, N.Y. She had resided at The Atria at Crossgate Assisted Living for the past eight years. Memorial services will be held Friday, June 3, 2005, at 11 a.m., at the Grace United Methodist Church. A reception will follow the service at the church. Burial will precede the service at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Marion was born March 27, 1915, the eldest daughter born to Perley S. and Beatrice (Donaghy) Bonett. She graduated with honors from St. Johnsbury Academy with the Class of 1933. Marion was married to the late Lewis J. Streeter, principal at St. Johnsbury Trade School. She retired as supervisor from New England Tel & Tel after 23 years of service. While her daughters were in school, Marion was active in parent-teacher associations and served as president and treasurer. She was very active in the Grace United Methodist Church, where she served on the board of directors, as a past president of the UMW (United Methodist Women) group, on the pastor-parish committee, and as a delegate to a National Methodist Women's conference which was held in California. She was also chairperson of many annual Christmas bazaars. She frequently helped organize, prepare, and serve many of the church's chicken pie dinners. Her hobbies were knitting, sewing and rug hooking. She tried to knit 30 pairs of mittens every year for the Santa Fund. In her retirement, she devoted many hours to her elderly friends, running them to doctor's appointments, buying groceries, as well as doing volunteer work at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital. Retirement also meant she could spend more time playing bridge. She was the mother of two daughters, Laurie Wheeler and her husband Lloyd of Colonie, N.Y., and Merrie Dyer of Cazenovia, N.Y. Her son-in-law, Brian S. Dyer, died in 1987. She was the proud grandmother of four grandchildren, Scott L. Wheeler of Colonie, N.Y., Lynn M. Romania and her husband Rudi of Loudonville, N.Y., Thomas B. Dyer and his wife Kristi of Boca Raton, Fla., and Jason S. Dyer of Cazenovia, N.Y. She was also the loving great-grandmother of Grace Laura, Brooke Mari and Laura Lynn Romania. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Daire of Whiting, N.J., and Mrs. Marjorie Smith and her husband Russell of both Danville, Vt., and Inverness, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Ruth Bonett of St. Johnsbury; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Mrs. Arlene May and her husband Royce, and Mrs. Harriett Badger and her husband Phillip; and two brothers, Earl Bonett, and Edward Bonett and his wife Mary; and a brother-in-law, Thomas Daire.

, 88, died Saturday, May 21, 2005, at Valley Terrace Assisted Living in Wilder, Vt., surrounded by his family. Mr. Learmonth was born on May 30, 1916, in Lyndon, Vt., the son of Emma and Ephrum Learmonth. He graduated from Lyndon Institute and received an honorable discharge from the Vermont National Guard. He was a 32nd Mason. He furthered his education in Cleveland and Denver engineering schools. He was an engineer at Acme Tool Company in Denver, Colo., during the war. His love of Vermont led him back in the 1940s working at Bell Aircraft in Burlington, eventually settling in the White River area in 1950, helping to build the landmark Wilder Dam. When the dam was completed he went to Cone Automatic in Windsor. His love of people and a passion for cars led to a change in careers. He hung his hat at Miller Automobile Company for the majority of his salesmanship years. His favorite cars were Cadillac and Pontiac. His natural ability for selling and his keen sense of customers' needs gave him much joy and he received many of the highest salesmanship achievement awards both locally and nationally for Cadillac and Pontiac. He couldn't give up his passion for selling and started a pickup cap business to stay busy after retirement, lasting into his mid-80s. He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Persis (Donaldson) Learmonth; a daughter, Patricia L. Pippin of White River, a daughter, Beverly Hodgdon of North Thetford, a daughter by a first marriage, Cora Sue Learmonth of Tampa, Fla.; one granddaughter, Christie Pippin of Boulder, Colo.; three grandsons, Scott Hodgdon of Milwaukee, Wis., and Brian and Luke Hodgdon of Thetford. Gordon will be remembered as a true gentleman. He lived to help everyone ... his family, friends, neighbors and strangers. He always lived by his motto: "It never hurts to be nice to anyone. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Thetford Baptist Church in East Thetford. Pastor John Hartley will officiate. , 62, of Windy Knoll Road, Jefferson, N.H., died Wednesday morning May 25, 2005, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster, N.H., after a long courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Dineen was born in Somerville, Mass., on Dec. 3, 1942, the son of Patrick and Anne (McLoughlin) Dineen. Frank was raised in Somerville and was a 1959 graduate of Malden Catholic High School. For a time he attended St. John's Seminary, Boston, Mass., and went on to graduate with honors from Boston College. Starting his career as an accountant, he worked in the Boston area for Arthur Anderson, TJ Flately, Cabot Cabot & Forbes, and REIT. In 1974 he moved to New Hampshire and purchased an existing accounting practice in Lancaster. Eventually the business took his name of Francis J. Dineen & Co. and he built it into a very successful practice. Frank retired but the firm continues today as Dineen & Crane PLLC. Frank loved traveling and had been around the world to countries such as Ireland, Italy and Mexico. He also traveled the U.S. extensively with his family and has been to many states including Alaska. Family members include his wife, Deborah A. (Simonds) Dineen of Jefferson; a son, Scott F. Dineen of San Francisco; a daughter, Shauna Dineen of Norwalk, Conn.; a brother, Charles Dineen of South Weymouth, Mass.; four sisters, Anne Dineen of Arlington, Mass., Mary Harshany of North Reading, Mass., Joan Hurynowicz of Burlington, Mass., and Pauline Dineen of North Reading, Mass. He was predeceased by his parents; and a sister, Patricia Berdine. At Frank's request there are no visiting hours and a graveside service will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Kilkenny View Cemetery, Jefferson. The Rev. , of Lyndon, died Thursday afternoon, May 26, 2005, at The Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndon, at the age of 75. He was born Jan. 22, 1930, in Lyndonville, son of the late Paul A. and Ruby L. (Page) Houghton. Mickey graduated from Lyndon Institute's Class of 1948. In 1949 he graduated from the Vermont School of Agriculture in Randolph, Vt. On Oct. 31, 1950, he married Beryle Rivers. Mickey worked for many years as a carpet and linoleum installer for Sullivan's Furniture in St. Johnsbury, and later for Paul's Wayside Furniture in Lyndon, and after that he worked as a self-employed flooring installer. He had also worked for Palmer Brothers Dry-cleaning in St. Johnsbury; DHIA as a milk tester at area farms; and for 18 years he worked as the custodian at Lyndon Corner Graded School. Memberships include Green Mountain Grange 1, Shepard Pomona Grange, Vermont State Grange, Enterprise Grange of Lyndon Corner, and was a past president of the Lyndon Historical Society. He also taught history and gave slide shows to local schoolchildren, and worked on the Fairbanks Museum Craft Days for many years. He and his wife, Beryle, operated a private museum of various collections in their home for many years as well. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Beryle Houghton of Lyndon; a son, Paul C. Houghton and his wife Carmen of Concord; two daughters and their husbands, Kathleen and Lawrence Simpson of Lyndon, and Beth and Lyle Degreenia of East Haven; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Phil Houghton of Kirby; a sister, Pauline Taylor and her husband Albert of Kirby; a sister-in-law, Laura Rivers of Concord; a brother-in-law, William Bedor of Littleton, N.H.; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Dana S.S. Houghton in 1978; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Houghton and Winona Bedor; and a brother-in-law, Carlisle Rivers. , of St. Johnsbury, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt., at the age of 70 years. She was born in St. Johnsbury, Feb. 12, 1935, the daughter of Maurice and Helen (Barrett) Nichols. A graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1953, Nancy spent most of her working career at Fairbanks Scales as a receptionist for nearly 30 years. Many area people will remember the many gardens Nancy would maintain, especially her love for perennials. Survivors include a son and his wife, Glenn and Peggy Barber of Waterford; two daughters, JoAnn Craffey of Spring Grove, Ill., and Sharon Jean and her husband Michael Fillion of Washington, Maine; a brother, William Nichols of Daytona Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two nieces and a nephews. , 77, passed away peacefully at his home in Vista, Calif., on May 8. Chet was born April 4, 1928, in St. Johnsbury, Vt., the second child of Irma and George Quimby of Passumpsic. A graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy's Class of 1946, Chet excelled at football and track and went on to receive a degree in journalism from Syracuse University. During his professional career, he held various executive marketing positions at IBM, CBS/Fawcett and Architectural Digest. For 25 years he lived in Mahwah, N.J., and was a deacon at the Ramapo Reformed Church. He was also an active member of the Republican Club. He is survived by his second wife of 27 years, Mary Alice Finnie; and his three children, Janice of Sonoma, Calif., Christopher of Suffern, N.Y., and Alexandra of Pittsburgh, Pa. Chet was predeceased by his first wife, Doris (nee Deichmeier), who passed away in 1978. A memorial for Chet will take place at Quimby Hill in East Barnet in late July.

, 60, of Northfield, N.H., formerly of Cabot and Woodbury, died Friday, May 27, 2005, at the UMass Medical Center in Worcester, Mass., following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 9, 1945, in Hardwick, the son of the late Daniel C. and Mary (McGill) Cookson Sr. He attended Woodbury public schools and graduated from Cabot High School in the Class of 1964. On Nov. 14, 1998, he married Grace Nora Prue in Cabot. Mr. Cookson was first employed as a machinist in Connecticut. He returned to Vermont and was employed by the Elltee Machine Shop in Barre for several years, and for 30 years he worked for UPS, retiring in 2000. He was a past member of the Local 57 Teamsters Union. He enjoyed traveling, working with his tractor, restoring old trucks, woodworking, NASCAR races, dancing and going to auctions. Survivors include his wife, Grace of Northfield, N.H.; two daughters, Dawn Cookson and her companion Donovan Levery of Concord, N.H., and Tammy Johnson and her husband Kevin of East Calais; three sons, John Cookson and his companion Nicole Urban of Cabot, Daniel Cookson of Woodbury, and Scott Cookson and his wife Tammy of East Barre; a stepson, Daniel Abbott Sr. and his wife Val of Cabot; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his stepmother, Laurette Cookson of Newport; his mother-in-law, Barbara Prue of Northfield, N.H.; three brothers, Chester Cookson and his wife Judy of East Montpelier, Lawrence Cookson and his wife Thea of Walden, and Daniel Cookson Jr. and his wife Ramona of Cabot; five sisters, Helen Fletcher and her husband David of Venice, Fla., Louise Foster of Inverness, Fla., Marguerite Hill of Venice, Fla., Martha Foster and her husband Harry of Cabot, and Ruth Rathburn and her husband Clifton of Woodbury; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. William A. "Billy" Fournier ....show
, 81, a St. Johnsbury Center resident, passed away Thursday, May 26, 2005, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital. Born Jan. 5, 1924, in St. Johnsbury, he was the son of the late Alphonse and Sarah (Raiche) Fournier. Bill attended area schools, served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, married Wilma L. Blake on Aug. 10, 1947, and worked road construction. Bill was a member of the VFW Post 793 and the American Legion Post 58, both of St. Johnsbury. Bill loved golfing and was a member of the Orleans Country Club for many years. He also enjoyed airplanes and had his pilot's license and loved to fly, horse racing and was the official starter at many county fairs throughout Vermont. His pride and joy was his grandchildren and their sports, following them to various events throughout the country. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Wilma; daughters, Janice Thissell and her husband Stephen of Chester, N.H., and Elaine Turner of St. Johnsbury; two brothers, Francis of St. Johnsbury Center, and Julien of Littleton, N.H.; two sisters, Evelyn Bilodeau of St. Johnsbury, and Theresa Mudgett of Waymouth, Mass.; grandchildren, Tracy Fried and her husband Jody, Treny Burgess and her husband Corey, Jeremy Thissell and his wife Jennifer, Tammy Turner and Gena Thissell; great-grandchildren, Molly, Rian, Kinley, Katelyn, Alexander, Isabella and Matthew; two sisters-in-law, Marylyn and Marjorie Blake; and four brothers-in-law, Bernard, Clifton, Wendell and William Blake. , of St. Johnsbury, longtime C.H. Goss shop foreman, passed away at NVRH Sunday afternoon, May 29, 2005. Henry died of heart-related health problems that had limited his activities in recent years. He was born in West Burke on May 8, 1929, the son of Henry E. and Louise (Ball) Lane. He married Beverly L. Bugbee at the West Burke Methodist Church on Aug. 10, 1952, and served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the CH Goss retread plant on Summer Street in 1991 at age 62. The Lanes enjoyed summers at their camp on Newark Pond. He enjoyed golfing at Orleans and Newark golf courses, and during the winter months in Myrtle Beach, S.C., where the Lanes had stayed some part of the winter months for the past 14 years. Over the years, he enjoyed attending as many of his family's ballgames as he could. His wife Beverly survives him, as do two sons, David Lane and his wife Brenda of St. Johnsbury, and Danny Lane and his wife Brenda of Waterford; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Stacey Pitts and her husband Jeremie and their two children Marissa and Cameron of Michigan, Eric Lane of Burlington, and Matthew Lane and Britney Lane both of Waterford; one sister, Oralie Thurston and her husband Donald of Clarksburg, Mass.; one brother-in-law, Alton Bugbee and his wife Sheila of Waterford; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church. The pastor, the Rev. John Marshall, will officiate, with the Rev. , 83, of Woodbury Drive, East Concord, Vt., died at her home Sunday, May 29, 2004. Mrs. Barnett was born in Danville, Vt., on July 14, 1921, the daughter of Ernest and Carrie (Porter) Kittridge. From the time she was a teenager to a few months before her death, Eunice was a hard worker. She was employed in many capacities but was primarily a cook most of her life. She operated several restaurants throughout the North Country in both Vermont and New Hampshire. She also worked for a time at the Gilman Paper Company and was recently employed at the Gilman Senior Center. There she also cooked and worked in the boutique. She was always helping those who were down and out and she loved cats. Family members include two daughters, Priscilla Shufelt of Groveton, and Emily Heathe of Lisbon; a son, Richard I. Spencer of East Concord; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Earl Barnett, in 1982; and two brothers, Oakley Kittridge and Raymond Kittridge; and a sister, Florence Burns. At Eunice's request, there are no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held Wednesday afternoon, June 1, at 1 p.m., in the Cushman Cemetery, Dalton. The Rev. Henry E. Cheney will officiate. , 66, of Barton, passed away in Newport on Saturday, May 28, 2005. She was born in Barton on Sept. 6, 1938, the daughter of Howard and Phoebe (Powers) Hardie. Marguerite was a past member of the Eastern Star. She worked at several different occupations in her life including X-ray technician at the St. Johnsbury Hospital, Barton Cleaners, waitress, and worked with her husband Dale as caretakers at Pageant Park for nine years. She enjoyed knitting and going to dances. She loved to have her family come for visits and especially enjoyed the family gatherings. In 1960, Marguerite married Dale Pierce, who survives her. She is also survived by her children, Pam Stevens and her husband Jeff of Barton, Kim Gosley of Barton, Teresa Diette and her husband Peter of Barton, Ritchie Pierce of Barton, Christine Martin and her husband David of Island Pond, and Kathy Jacobs and her husband Alan of Barton; her grandchildren, Travis and Robbie Stevens, Tyler Gosley, Corey Diette, Kristen Pierce, Nicholas and Devan Martin, and Abigail and Ashley Jacobs; her brother, Philo Hardie of Northfield; her sister, Nancy Simon and her husband Mike of Lyndonville; her nephews, Shawn, Jeremy, Kenny and Zachary; and by Tracy Davis Pierce and Lola Star Pierce. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. , 49, of Morrisville, died peacefully Saturday morning, May 28, 2005. He was born in St. Johnsbury on Aug. 2, 1955, the son of Leon and Joyce (Magoon) McCullock. Pat was a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy. He married at age 18 and had his son Marc, now 30, from that union, who survives him. In 1989, he married the former Karen Caplan of St. Johnsbury. They have two daughters, Meranda, 16, and Amber, 13. Pat is also survived by his mother; four brothers; a sister; and nieces and nephews. A memorial service to celebrate Pat's life will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, June 5, under the Pavilion at Elmore State Park (rain or shine). Please dress casual and bring a lawn chair. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Pat's memory be made to the Lamoille Area Cancer Network, P.O. Box 38, Lake Elmore, VT 05657.
