, 79, of Victory, died peacefully with her family at her side Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009 at St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Dec. 27, 1929 in St. Johnsbury, the daughter of Roderick and Dorothy (Page) Ewens. She was a graduate of Lyndon Institute's class of 1947. On June 19, 1949 she married Lyman Dunn at the Lyndon Corner Congregational Church. They had lived in Lyndonville and Victory. Annabelle had served on the Victory School Board, was a member of the Juniper Branch of Rebekah Lodge #9 of Lyndonville, the United Methodist Woman's Circle at the Lyndonville United Methodist Church, the Yankee Watters Travelers Club, and worked many years on Holiday in the Hills in Victory and Granby where she is remembered for her delicious fudge. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, she enjoyed taking part in all her families' activities, including maple sugaring each spring. She also enjoyed gardening, knitting, and making crafts. Survivors include three sons, Lysle Dunn of St. Petersburg, Fla., Lyman Dunn Jr. of Lyndonville, and Carl Dunn and wife Shari of Littleton, N.H.; two daughters, Carol Allen and companion Jim Sanborn of Victory, and Eileen Beliveau and companion Brian Lampman of Lyndon; 10 grandchildren, Robert, Jamie, Elijah, Rebecca, Vinnie, Daniel, Neal, Stephen, Jonathan, and Anthony; nine great-grandchildren; her brother, Dale Ewens and wife Helena of Concord; two sisters, Alice Caswell of Florida, and Gerry Carriere and companion Donald Farnsworth of Barton; a sister in-law, Nancy McGowan of Concord, N.H.; a special friend who was like a daughter to her and Lyman, Lori Smith of Lyndonville; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband of 60 years, Lyman Dunn this past June; and two sisters, Isabelle Harvey, and Ida Allen. Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Guibord Funeral Home with the Rev. Barbara Dwyer officiating. Burial will follow in Lyndon Center Cemetery. , 85, of Hardwick, died peacefully, in the loving care of his family, at his residence, on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009. He was born July 18, 1924 in Swanton, the son of the late Louis Albert Sholan Sr. and Louise ( Trayah ) Sholan. He attended Elmore and Walden public Schools. He first married Faustine Hattie Martin in Hyde Park. They purchased a home on Mackville Road, in Hardwick where he made his home for more than 59 years. Following her death on June 19, 1992, he married Marie Ackermann Curschmann. In his earlier years, Larry, was employed by Slayton Motors in Hardwick. He later owned and operated Larry's Tractor Service, and opened Larry's Trailer Park in Hardwick. He retired in the early 1980s. Larry was a member of the United Church of Hardwick, the Caspian Lake Masonic Lodge F. and AM in Hardwick, Snow Fake Ridge Runners, Calais-Woodbury Mountain Tamers, V.A.S .T. and the Nelson Pond Association. He enjoyed his dog "Fifi" fishing, hunting, water sports, camping, playing cards and watching the birds. Survivors include his wife, Marie, of Hardwick; two daughters, Pauline French and husband, William, of Clewiston, Fla., and Barbara Hall and her husband, Roland, of Hardwick; three step-children Lesa Cathcart and Christian Curschmann, both of Hardwick, and Alan Curschmann of New Jersey; five grandchildren Danny Hale and his wife, Tamara, David Hale and his wife, Shelley, all of Hardwick, Richard Gutzmann of Craftsbury, Nate Moulton of Hardwick and Angel French of LaBelle, Fla.; eught great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; 10 step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marjorie Farr of Hardwick and Mildred Symonds of Middletown, Conn.; a brother, L. Albert Sholan Jr. of Vero Beach Fla.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. , 45, after a lengthy illness, died Sept. 28, 2009, at his home in Cabot. Born in Barre Jan. 26, 1964, he was the son of Kenneth and Rose (Sullenberger) Talbert. Brian was a lifelong resident of Cabot, graduating from Cabot High School. During his short lifetime he was self employed as a logger and he operated an excavation business. Brian enjoyed hunting, trapping and especially school sports. Surviving are his parents, his longtime partner Sherri Norman and her children Dore' and Shannon as well as Brian's daughter Samantha; his brother Chuck and wife Lilly Talbert, a nephew Willem, as well as aunts, uncles and cousins. Brian also leaves his childhood friend Luke Persons. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, 11 a.m. at the Cabot United Church with interment to follow in the Cabot Village Cemetery. , 58, of Littleton, N.H., died on Sept. 27, 2009 at her home. She was born the daughter of Roger and June (Roby) Mason, June 10, 1951 and is a graduate of Littleton High School. She was a longtime employee of Norton Pike, Inc. prior to going into private health-care. She passionate about animals and her dog Shiloh. She is survived by a brother, Roger Mason Jr. of Littleton; her nephew Roger Mason III and great-nephew, Brady Mason, both of Mooresville, N.C.; and a host of friends. , 87, of Wheelock, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family Tuesday evening Sept. 29, 2009. She was born Jan. 5, 1922 in Concord, the daughter of Lemuel and Devilla (Shupe) Sleep. Leota graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1940. On Aug. 25, 1940 she married Raymond Poulin. A dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, the greatest highlight of her life was her seventeen grandchildren and twenty-nine great grandchildren with whom she loved mentoring, playing, and sliding with. She took great interest in following the history of Wheelock. Riding and walking the back roads of the Northeast Kingdom, knitting and crocheting for family and friends, and painting rocks with ladybug scenes brought her much pleasure. Leota was considered the yard sale queen by her family. Survivors include her husband Raymond Poulin of Wheelock (P.O. died peacefully Sept. 25, 2009, at Kendal at Hanover in Hanover, N.H. Born Aug. 6, 1923, he was the son of Gordon and Miriam Browne of St. Louis, Mo. A 1945 graduate of Harvard University with a Master's degree in Education from Northwestern University, he lived what he characterized as a blessed life. He married Edith Carlton Aug. 25, 1945, and shared a full, loving life with her until her death in 2001. He is survived by six children: Sarah Browne Polito and her husband Joseph, Charles Browne and his wife Wynne, Rebecca Browne Lafferty and her husband Bruce, Deborah Browne Carpilio, Elizabeth Browne, and Richard Browne and his wife Catharine, was the proud grandfather of 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and is also survived by his dear friend Patricia Ballou. Raised as a Congregationalist, Gordon (known to many as "Gordy" and occasionally "Bud") found his spiritual home in the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in the early 1950s. The Society's principles of peace, love, and service to others guided him throughout his personal and his professional lives. He liked to say he had four careers. His first career began in Illinois where he taught and coached seventh and eighth graders, instilling in many of them a love of literature, of sports, and of him as their friend. When the family moved to Cape Cod in 1958, he began his second career as a free-lance writer, a career he continued to practice throughout his life, producing short stories, articles, pamphlets on Quakerism, and speeches as well as editing two textbooks on world literature. When Cape Cod Community College opened, he joined the faculty in 1962 to begin his third career, reaching out to all students but having a particularly strong influence on some of the veterans returning from Vietnam. His ever-deepening faith and involvement in Quakerism led him to take early retirement from teaching so he could pursue his fourth career working in international relations for the Society of Friends, a 10-year career that allowed him to reach out to people worldwide in the interests of peace and justice. In 1988, he retired to Vermont, but his commitment to Quaker service and his love of words, from terrible puns to great literature, never wavered. Even as he pursued his four careers, he worked to achieve equality and peace for all. He and his wife were among the group who founded the Cape Cod branch of the NAACP; they were military tax resisters in the early 1960s; he did draft counseling for those seeking Conscientious Objector status during the Vietnam War. His commitment to peace and to the Society of Friends were natural catalysts to leadership in New England Quakerism and ultimately in international Quakerism. He was much admired as both a speaker about and as an example of Quaker values. Asked to provide a biography for Kendal at Hanover, the retirement community to which he and his wife moved in 1999, he observed, "The three things I am serious about are religion, marriage, and baseball." He lived to see his three favorite teams win the World Series: the Boston Red Sox in 2004, the Chicago White Sox in 2005, and the St. Louis Cardinals in 2006. He was joyously married to Edith for 56 years. He would no doubt say that his religion and prayers contributed to these successes. His final years as an Alzheimer's patient demonstrated Gordon Browne's essential sweetness and loving nature. A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. at Kendal at Hanover in Hanover, N.H. , 92, of West Burke, died peacefully Saturday evening Sept. 26, 2009, surrounded by her loving family at St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born May 19, 1917, in Enosburg, Vt., the oldest daughter of Clifford and Isabelle (Larabee) Bingham. On May 29, 1935, she married Warden H. Drew. They operated a large farm of registered Holsteins in West Burke for many years, retiring in 1961. They also did maple sugaring each spring. Mrs. Drew drove a school bus for the town of Burke for many years. She was active in several community organizations including the West Burke PTA, the Burke/Sutton Home Dem, former president of the Senior Action Center in Lyndonville, the West Burke Grange, and worked to create an informational Directory for the Town of West Burke. Evelyn enjoyed bowling, playing cribbage, poker, whist, bingo, working in her flower and vegetable gardens. She took great pride with her baking talents that were enjoyed by many. Survivors include two sons, Everett Drew and wife Norma of Danville, and Ronald Drew and wife Pauline of Lyndonville; two daughters, Marion Gray and husband Stephen of Calais, and Roxanne Broughton and husband Michael of Wasilla, Alaska; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Frances Lumbra of St. Johnsbury, and Velma Grant of Derby Line; two sisters in-law, June Bingham of East Charleston and Dot Bingham of Island Pond; a brother in-law, Ed Brown of West Burke; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband Warden Drew in 1993; a daughter, Silvia Proulx in 1977; three brothers, Howard, Ralph, and Marshall Bingham; two sisters, Bernice Daniels Glasson, and Altha Eastman Brown. , 75, of Lyndon, died peacefully Saturday morning Sept. 26, 2009, at his home with his family by his side. He was born March 24, 1934, in Sheffield, the son of Lawrence and Evelyn (Smith) Smith. Following his schooling David served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. David worked for Fairbanks Morse in St. Johnsbury for many years as a Sealer and Calibrator of scales. He had built and owned a Coupe Race Car #53 that raced at Bear Ridge Speedway in Bradford for several years. He worked hard to restore back to original a 1941 Chevy and a 1952 Packard, which he drove his family in on their long drives throughout the back roads of the Northeast Kingdom. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was a lifetime member of the DAV. Every year David looked forward to his family gatherings and baseball at Mackville Pond in Hardwick. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Andrea (Bassett) Smith of Lyndon, (P.O. , 27, of Newport died suddenly Sept. 23, 2009, in Burlington. He was born Aug. 2, 1982, in Washington Township, N.J., beloved son of Alice S. Nicholson of Newport, Vt., and step-father Anthony K. Session of Dillon, S.C.; and his father James N. Coates of Hastings, Fla. He graduated from Lake Region Union High School class of 2000 and had just started school at the Vermont Technical College, Williston Campus and was extremely happy there. For six years he was a corrections officer at the North Western State Correctional Facility in St. Albans. John loved computers and all technology. He was a life scout from troop 862 of Barton. He enjoyed hanging out with his friends and most of all with his son, Holden. He is survived by his son Holden R. Diesi of Vergennes, his mother Alice Nicholson of Newport, his Dad Anthony K. Session of Dillon, S.C.; his father James N. Coates of Hastings, Fla.; his maternal grandmother Caroline Nicholson of Newport, two aunts: Sharon Palestino and Connie Pavlik of Florida, his uncle Ralph Nicholson Jr., all of Florida, and by his best friends Jeff Mayo of Maine, Kenny LaBounty of Essex, Cole Montague of Newport and Matt Bent of Norwich. , of Derby, passed away in his home on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, at the age of 69. He was born in Randolph on May 1, 1940 to Glen and Marion (Harris) Buzzell, the oldest of three sons. George completed his undergraduate degree at the University of New Hampshire where he met his wife, Dorie. After graduation, they married and moved to Montana where George attended graduate school. In 1964, George and Dorie returned to New England where George accepted a position with the Vermont Department of Forest, Parks and Recreation. George was appointed as the Vermont State Forester for Orleans County in 1965. He served the residents of the Northeast Kingdom in that capacity for 44 years before retiring on Feb. 28, 2009. George's love of nature and inquisitive mind enabled him to serve as a brilliant forester, while his sharp wit and ready smile endeared him to those around him. George was an avid lover of nature, animals, music and the arts. He was an accomplished cook who loved watching others enjoy good food that he prepared or provided. He worked to earn money for guitar lessons as a boy and began performing formally in area establishments while still in high school. He continued playing and singing for both audiences and family for much of his life. George was always generous and loved to make those around him laugh. George is survived by many family members including his brother, Max Buzzell of Massachusetts, his children, Roy Buzzell of Middlebury, Patricia and Robert Wood of Newport. N.H., Paul and Monica Buzzell of Huntington, and Rebecca Brown of Newport, Vt., and his grandchildren, Christopher and Katherine Wood, Felicia, Justin and Sarah Buzzell, Mitchell, Aaron, and Samantha Brown, and Thomas and Kimberly Buzzell, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home located at 4670 Darling Hill Road in Newport, Vt., from 7 to 9 p.m. today, and from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with a graveside service immediately following at the Derby Pond Cemetery. She was born in Lyndon, Vt., on June 7, 1924, one of 11 children born to Edmond and Exilia (Duperron) Goyette. Roseanna worked as a cashier at Zayre's for 15 years, she loved to spend her time knitting, and going to church functions, especially the church bazaars and flower shows. Roseanna is survived by her son, Allen Stetson and Donna Bigelow of St. Johnsbury; three grandsons, Joshua Brown, Shawn Stetson and Aaron Stetson; one brother, Robert Goyette of North Danville; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Romeo, Pete, Ernest, Roland and Lionel; her sisters, Bernadette, Medora, Alberta and Theresa. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, Oct. 5, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. Father Dwight Baker will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. , 41, of Rutland, died Oct. 2, 2009, at his home. He was born April 8, 1968, in Pittsfield, Mass., the son of Douglas and Claire (Woods) McKee. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Mr. McKee worked at Dunkin' Donuts in Rutland. He enjoyed bowling and golfing with his brother, Eric. Survivors include his mother of Rutland; his father and step-mother, Pat of Rutland; his sister, Susan Blow and husband, Todd of Danville; his brother, Eric McKee and wife, Beth of Rutland; his step-father, Dan Brown of Rutland; two nephews, Nicholas Blow and Max McKee; and two step-brothers, Matt McDevitt and Andrew McDevitt and wife, Meaghan. , 53, of Pittsburg, N.H., died at his home early Friday morning, Oct. 2, 2009, with his loving wife by his side. Mr. Daniels was born in Island Pond, Vt., on July 26, 1956, a son of Ira Daniels and Vivian (Pond) Daniels. Steve was a well-known personality in the Pittsburg area, with many years of running the Moose Festival Antique Car Show and the Great North Woods Fishing Derby. He cooked at many Pittsburg eating establishments over the years, including Dube's Pit Stop, and he also worked at Clarkie's Market in Colebrook as the produce manager, and then he worked for several years in the maintenance department at The BALSAMS. He did odd jobs for many people, including his neighbors at the Snowfield Cabins. He loved to collect all kinds of different things, and he was an avid hunter and fisherman. Steve will be remembered by his family and friends as a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend to many. He leaves behind his wife of 10 years, Michelle (Plante) Daniels, of Pittsburg, N.H.; his mother, Vivian Daniels of Vermont.; three daughters, Harmony Wilcox and husband Curt of North Troy, Honey Lee Daniels of West Charleston, and Delaney Daniels of Pittsburg; a son, U.S. Army Pvt. Craig Daniels and his sister Amanda Daggett of Newport; three brothers, Robert Daniels of Island Pond, Tommy Daniels of St. Johnsbury, and Joey Pond of Newport; seven grandchildren, Michael, Rhiley, Baylee, Connor, Brandon, Lee, and Faith; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his father and an infant sister, Juanita. At his specific request, there are no calling hours or public services. , 67, died on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at the Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. She was born in Portland, Maine, Jan. 31, 1942, the daughter of Fred and Catherine (Loring) Cavanaugh. Pat graduated from Cathedral High School in Portland, Maine, Class of 1960. She went on to Maine School of Practical Nursing, Class of 1962. During her nursing career she worked at Maine Medical Center, St. Mary's in Rochester, N.Y., Wooster Community Hospital and Akron City Hospital in Ohio. She worked 22 years at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital, retiring in 2003. She married Gordon Goss on April 12, 1969. She was a loving wife, mother, grammie, daughter, sister, aunt, and loved to be around family and friends. Always ready to lend a helping hand. Pat as a child loved spending time in Long Island, Maine, and summers with Papa and the Baron Sisters. She was devoted to her friends and family, especially her two grandsons, Brady and "her best friend" Ezra. She was predeceased by her parents, Fred and Catherine Cavanaugh; her grandfather, "Papa" Martin Cavanaugh; and Aunt Margaret Mary McCallum. , 94, resident of Milford, N.H., died Oct. 3, 2009, at Crestwood Care & Rehabilitation Center, Milford, N.H. She was born in Greenville, Maine, on Jan. 5, 1915, a daughter of the late John D. and Evelyn (Bodfish) Sweet. Mrs. Adams attended schools in Vermont and graduated from Peacham Academy, Class of 1933, and was a member of the Alumni Association. She resided in Milford since 1981 and formerly lived in East Peacham, Vt., for several years, and Portsmouth, N.H. for 30 years. Mrs. Adams was employed as a bookkeeper for Caswell Brothers, Inc. in Portsmouth, N.H., for many years and had previously worked as a cashier for Pic-N-Pay Supermarket. She enjoyed visiting her family, playing cards and she was an avid bowler. In addition, she was a member of the First Congregational Church of Milford, UCC and AARP. Mrs. Adams was predeceased by her husband, Gordon E. Adams; a son, Roland G. Adams; two grandsons, James Burt and Richard Burt; and a great grandson, Jack C. Halley. Family members include six daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth & Ron Violette of Amherst, NH, Doris E. Burt of Farmington, NH, Sandra L. & Al Banish of Lackawanna, N.Y., Judith A. & Tom Morin of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Linda E. & David Chase of Chesapeake, Va., Nancy L. & Dana Heaney of Rye, N.H.; 18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; a sister, Susie W. Leach of Portsmouth, N.H.; many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours are Monday, Oct. 5, from 4-7 p.m. in the Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm St., Milford, N.H. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the First Congregational Church of Milford, UCC, 10 Union St., Milford, N.H. Burial will be in Peacham Cemetery, Peacham, Vt.
