Jean Crossley Haigh
....show (formerly Rogers and Cotroneo), 84, of South Albany Road in Craftsbury, VT, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully while leading a hike with her good friends from the Northeast Kingdome Section of the Green Mountain Club. She was doing what she loved most in her favorite part of the state, right up until the last moment.
Born on March 21, 1935, to Ernest and Etta (Morris) Haigh, Jean grew up in Rutland, VT, where she developed a love for Morgan horses at Mr. Hendy’s barn and for skiing at Pico. Graduating from Rutland High School, she studied microbiology at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, the rugged home of her ancestors. After returning to the States, she married and had two daughters, Nancy and Jackie, and, in 1965, resettled in Sudbury, VT, on an old farm, which she quickly filled with Morgan horses and a pony. She rekindled her love of skiing at High Pond Ski Area. Jean completed her B.S. and Masters in Education at Castleton State College. Later, she moved to Craftsbury, VT.
Over a long, vigorous, and valued career, Jean enriched a variety of educational institutions, serving as a fifth-grade teacher at Lothrop Elementary School; an administrator at the Brandon Training School, where she assisted in the deinstitutionalization and closure of the facility; as Special Education Director at Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union and Lamoille South Supervisory Union; and as Adjunct Professor at Castleton and Johnson State Colleges. At the time of her death, she was still working for UVM, consulting to schools on the implementation of Positive Behavioral Intervention Support programs. As an educator and a teacher of teachers, Jean transformed innumerable lives.
Jean’s unbounded energy, her commitment and dedication, her kindness and generosity, her compassion and care, and the brilliance and clarity of the light she brought to everything provided an example and an inspiration not only to all the young lives she touched and transformed, but to all the teachers she mentored and guided and who continue to spread her invaluable influence. To be anywhere with Jean in public was to be routinely astonished that she always seemed to know—and remember—everyone, and everyone loved her. The stream of people who stopped to say hello and chat, to be remembered, and to draw energy and warmth from Jean’s limitless stores was a constant revelation of what she meant to so many.
Outside of her work, Jean was a tireless and passionate member of the Green Mountain Club, where she served as a Board Member, a former President, a founding member of the NEK Section, and a regular hike leader literally until her last day. One of her proudest achievements was the opening of the Kingdom Heritage Trail earlier this year, a project she worked on for twenty years. She also helped to found the Friends of Willoughby State Forest, a private, non-profit committed to preserving the pristine nature and encouraging the responsible use of the Willoughby State Forest. Jean truly loved the outdoors; in addition to hiking, climbing, skiing, and snowshoeing in VT, she loved spending time in Scotland and the Alps. Here too Jean’s energy and example fostered and inspired so many others to go out and explore the world around them.
Somehow, Jean also found time to spend with her family and countless friends. Survivors include her daughters: Nancy Harvey (Mike) of Rochester, VT, and Jackie Rogers (Tom Moye) of Middlesex, VT; three grandchildren: Molly Kerr (Darren), Megan Harvey (John Fabbioli), Skylar Lobdell; three great-grandchildren: Hunter Fabbioli and Corbin and Colton Kerr; and a niece: Susan Haigh.
She was predeceased by her parents, Ernest and Etta Haigh, and by a brother, Douglas Haigh.
Those wishing to honor Jean’s memory may do so by making charitable contributions to the Green Mountain Club and the Friends of Willoughby State Forest.
A Celebration of Jean’s life will be held in Waterbury Center on December 7th, from 12n until 2pm at the Zenbarn with a gathering later at the Green Mountain Club Headquarters from 2pm until 4pm. Parking is limited so please car pool.

His passion for wine earned him a one-week stint on a cruise line as a sommelier, a position in wine management at a fishing lodge in Minnesota, and a wine distributor in Stowe, Vermont before eventually settling down in the Northeast Kingdom at the Wildflower Inn. Here, Brian met Des Hertz, to whom he married and had two children, Erin and Kate O’Farrell. Brian loved being a father, and in marrying his wife Jenna, he welcomed two more children into his life, Henry and Annie Cunningham. Their family was complete when Brian and Jenna brought Brennan O’Farrell into the world in 2007.
Brian received his Master’s Degree in Counseling at UVM and settled into a career in school counseling at the St. Johnsbury School for 20 years. At the school, Brian took pride in his development of the 6th grade collaboration with the Appalachian Mountain Club, his membership in the healthy schools team, his involvement with the HALO program and development of middle-level summer camps, his inter-agency collaborations, and his role as president of the St. Johnsbury School Education Association. His commitment to countless students and their families earned him the award of Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 2007. Although remaining a perpetual middle school student at heart, he finally “graduated” eighth grade and transitioned himself to St. Johnsbury Academy, where he continued his role as a school counselor.
Brian took advantage of the Northeast Kingdom’s beauty through skiing, biking, and boating. He was most happy when traveling with his family. He led them on many adventures, all the while teaching them the ins and outs of being a “good traveler” and the importance of building curiosity and understanding one another in the world. Some of his favorite places to visit included West Cork, Ireland, the Caribbean, Florida, Montreal, and Chicago.
Brian was a kind soul, spreading empathy everywhere he went and impacting all the lives he touched with grace and generosity. He found humor in unexpected places and his fun-spirited laugh and smile were contagious. Brian was a lover of the finer things in life, and was a great chef who loved to prepare meals for his family. He would never say no to karaoke or cookies.
Brian was predeceased by his brother, Tim O’Farrell, and is survived by his wife, Jenna O’Farrell of St. Johnsbury; his five children, Erin, Henry, Annie, Kate and Brennan; his parents, Jack & Dede O’Farrell of Las Cruces, New Mexico; his siblings, Kelly & Michael O’Toole of Arlington, Mass., and Liam O’Farrell and his partner Mary Jo Sleeper of South Burlington; nieces and nephews, Matthew, Liam, Patrick & Molly O’Toole, Kelsey, Maggie & Abbie O’Farrell, Mia & Mykala O’Farrell, and Lily, Phoebe, & Essie Loomis; his in-laws Pam and Henry Smart of St. Johnsbury; his sister-in-law Meredith Loomis and her partner, Sara Crothers of Jeffersonville.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, November 22, 2019, 1-3PM and 6-8PM at the South Church Building, 1052 Main Street in St. Johnsbury, VT. He also served as a dentist for St. Peter’s Orphanage in Denville.
Frank retired from his dental practice at age 71 but remained active as an interim dentist in New Hampshire for more than two years.
Frank’s dearly loved wife of 43 years tragically died of cancer three months after he retired. Four years later, he returned to his hometown of St. Johnsbury to marry a longtime friend, Rosalie Vear, whose husband had also died of cancer after a long, happy marriage.
Frank was happy to be back in his hometown and quickly involved himself in the St. Johnsbury community. Steven Leigh Larocque
....show , 64, of East Barnet, passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2019 after a very courageous battle with cancer. He was born April 4, 1955 to Leigh and Beverly (Goodwin) Larocque.
He grew up on the family farm in East Barnet. He attended Barnet Elementary Schools and highschool at St. Johnsbury Academy and Danville High School. He married Michele Dennison and worked on the family farm until he decided to take advantage of making some money on the road construction of the interstate highway which was currently going through his family’s farm. After the family farm had been sold to a tree farmer, he had the privilege of remodeling the dairy barn to be the new owner’s living quarters. After the birth of two sons he went into farming on his own in the Waterford area and later on Joes Brook Road in Barnet. After leaving the farming industry he was a “Jack of all trades” including constructing forms and pouring concrete, machine shops, carpentry, painting, landscaping, renovating houses, chicken farming. At one time in his lifetime another line of employment he was quite proud of was being hired by the local Forest Products owner, Larry Moffatt. He became proficient in operating all logging equipment, bulldozers, excavators, loaders. His last years of employment was faithfully working for Robert Roystan at Modern Protective Coating and refurbishing bridges in several Northeastern States.
After what he considered to be retirement, he continued to work very hard growing vegetables and selling harvested food at roadside stands in the Montpelier area. The one food he didn’t sell all of was pumpkins as he always donated some to the Barnet Elementary School. He was an extremely hard worker and had a huge heart. It would be impossible to list the numerous struggling people whom he befriended and helped to get their lives in order.
He is survived by sons Jason, Ryan, Malcolm, and former wife Amy Welch and daughter Danielle, four grandchildren, and his brothers and sisters Sylvia (Laferriere), Scott, Sandra (Garand), Sheila (Bean), Shawn, Shelly (Mitchell), Shannon. Also his mother Beverly Larocque.

One of his favorite past times was collecting snow machines and vehicles – whether running or not! Also spending time with his very close family members who live on the same road or close by. Family was everything to him.
A Celebration of Life and graveside services will be held in the Fall of 2020 at the family cemetery Good Rock Acres (which Steve had cleared and helped to build a few years ago).

....show , 74, died in his Danville home on December 11. Paul was born on July 2, 1945 in New York City to Paul Armington Ide and Frances Elizabeth (Large) Ide.
Paul graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He and his former wife, Gail Kuhl, moved to Vermont in 1968. Together they founded and ran the Candle Company in Brownington.
Paul had forty-year career in timber-framing and historic building restoration. His work included restoration of Vermont barns, including the Shelburne Farm Breeding and Dairy Barns; covered bridges including the Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge. His did extensive restoration work on many Vermont church spires and belfries including the Island Pond Episcopal Church. Paul worked in numerous civic buildings such as the Wheelock Town Hall and in historic Vermont homesteads including the Calvin Coolidge Homestead and the Justin Morrill Homestead.
Nationally Paul did restoration work at the Golden Spike National Historic Site in Utah, the Keene Wonder Mine in Death Valley, and the Cable Mountain Draw Works in Zion National Park.
Paul had a passion for the natural world. From a young age he had a love for animals and observing nature, as well as natural athletic talent. In his earlier days, he explored other professional options such as art restoration and horse logging, before landing on timber frame restoration. He had a passion for learning that led to encyclopedia like knowledge. Always deep in a biography or the latest episode of The New Yorker or National Geographic, conversations with him were interesting and highly informative. Paul had a quick wit and an eye for the unique and romantic. His style stood out as it was a mix of hippy, cowboy and beatnik. Towards the end, Paul rarely missed an episode of Jeopardy and enjoyed his evenings by the fireplace with two fingers of Grand Marnier.
He was predeceased in 2013 by his loving partner of many years, Penny Hoblin. He is survived by his children, Knight Kuhl Ide, his son Raven Bona Ide, Raven’s partner Samantha Ferrato and their daughter, Faewynn Hawthorne and Knight’s son Daymien: Lilias McAlpin Ide, her son Lyric and her husband, Michael Mader; Linden Paul Ide and his daughter Lola; Penny Hoblin’s sons, Schuyler (Sky) Bond Nicholson, his wife Beth and their son Quinn; and Alexander Francis Nicholson and his fiancé Marie DiBenedetto and Paul’s sister, Mary Armington Ide and her partner, Mary W. Mathias of Brattleboro.
A gathering of friends and family will be held on January 18 from 3 to 5 at Paul’s home in Danville. Donations in his name may be made to the Caledonia Home Health and Hospice.
