William Bruce “Bill” Beattie
....show , of Concord, VT, formerly of Lyndonville and St Johnsbury, Vermont, passed away suddenly on August 14, 2019, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital.
Born in Lyndon, Vermont on March 18, 1933, he was the son of Harold and Phyllis Wallace Beattie.
While a student at Danville High School, class of 1952, he attended Boys State, excelled in sports and was captain of the cross-country team and came in first at the state meet during his senior year. Bill enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict and served from 1953 to 1957, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. Upon returning to the States from Okinawa, he and Joan Johnston were married on December 18, 1955.
With his keen and delightful sense of humor, Bill was always a willing participant in school plays and community fundraising events — once joining a musical chorus of tutu-clad PTA fathers.
His camp, ‘Bee At Ease’ on Shadow Lake in Concord, Vermont, with its open doors was a busy gathering place for family and friends, who enjoyed barbecues, corn roasts, and cruises around the lake on his somewhat antediluvian houseboat — his faithful dog by his side — always an adventure — not always intentional!
Bill enjoyed camping, cooking, music, dancing, and tinkering. He could fix “darn near everything,” enjoyed a good joke, and always had a humorous story to tell.
Upon retirement as a sales employee with New Hampshire Plumbing Supply, he relocated to Brooksville, Florida, while spending summers at his camp on Shadow Lake, where for many years he was heavily involved in the community, serving thirty years as president of the Shadow Lake Association. Kind, organized, always a willing helper, his energy and enthusiasm never wavered.
Bill was a 65 year member of Washburn Masonic Lodge No. 92 in Danville, an active member of VFW and Moose Lodge in St. Johnsbury, as well as a member of Egypt Shriners in Brookridge, Florida, and American Legion #0186 in Spring Hill, and he worked with the Hernando County Sheriff Department as a Crimewatcher.
He was a member of the Grace Methodist Church in St Johnsbury and the Mariner Methodist Church in Spring Hill, Florida.
Bill is survived by his children, Carol of Waitsfield, Vermont; William and his wife, Jeanne, of Knoxville, Tennessee; Linda of Lyndonville; as well as his former spouse; his fiancée, Linda Rafuse; nine grandchildren; two siblings, Elizabeth (William) Bolevic of Danville and Donald (Constance) of Lyndonville; and half siblings, Alice, Jane, Mary, Holly, Martin, Marion, Thomas, Marilyn, and Catherine of Danville. Bill was predeceased by his son Kevin, brother Robert, and half-brother Harold W. (Occie) Beattie, Jr.
A private Masonic service is planned at a future date.
Donations in Bill’s memory may be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospital through their website or by mail at the following address: Shriners Hospital for Children, Attn: Office of Development, 2900 N Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607

The family of Ethelyn Mae “Carr” Calkins
....show announce the departure of their mother on August 28,
2019 at the Atkinson House in Newbury, VT. Better known as “Betty,” she passed in peace with
her sons at her side at the age of 96 and lived a full life, primarily in Danville.
Betty was born June 22, 1923, at the farm in Danville (also the former home of Thaddeus Stevens),
with her twin sister arriving before the stroke of midnight, to Harry & Clarissa “White” Carr.
She grew up on a 432-acre farm, working and studying by lantern, up early in the morning with
chores as, like many, they raised all their own food. The family survived the “Depression of 1933”
and she attended the “Center School” from grades 1-8, a one room, single teacher school without
electricity and running water, but with a pot-bellied stove and a double out-house. They walked to
school, often taking the short cut along the St J. & L.C. rails or rode their horse “Lottie.” Her
mother warned her about the railroad, especially to run if they saw any tramps, but they never did!
She recalled having “corn husking bees” with the neighboring farmers and if you got a “red ear” you
were allowed to kiss a special person. The family moved into “town” in 1936 and she attended
Danville High School where she was a center on the girls’ basketball team and captain her senior
year, graduating in 1941 with a focus on “business classes.” She then went to work for the former
Caledonia National Bank and married Roy A. Calkins on January 1944 in Tucson, AZ.
After WW II, she began raising a family of four boys, first on Railroad Street with the trains
rumbling through Danville prompting the hound dogs to howl behind the house when the whistles
blew. In the early 1960’s, they moved to the “Dole” farmhouse in the center of the village. In the
70’s and 80’s, she worked at the Danville School District and as an assistant Town Clerk, later
volunteering at the local school and Open-Door food shelf.
She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed attending their school functions and sporting events,
driving Garren & Karen’s children around and having them visit her modest apartment for snacks
and company. She enjoyed family thanksgivings with her large, extended family. Her “pink stuff”

Beauman “Sonny” Champagne
....show died peacefully at home with his devoted friend Sandra sitting next to him. Born June 7, 1944 in St. Johnsbury, Sonny was the son of Archie and Ina e Champagne. He grew up in the Northeast Kingdom living with his family his father’s death in 1990.
Sonny had a great sense of humor. In his younger years, Sonny's trade mark for flirting was serenading his favorite female friends on his guitar with "You Are My Sunshine” Each year he reminded his friends in March that his birthday was coming up in June, to be followed by going to summer camp and ending the season at the local county fair. He would list these highlights, one-by-one on his fingers, just to make his point.
Sonny had a great love for vinyl records, which started years ago while living with his longtime friend, "my buddy, Dale". Over the years Sonny collected hundreds of LPs. They were his prized possessions. Favorite album covers hung across his bedroom walls. He spent many hours shuffling through the pile of records and listening to his favorites.
Sonny thrived with care and support from his dear friend, Sandra Swanson, as well as many other caregivers throughout the years. Just over a year ago a new grandchild was born to Sandra’s family. Sonny was smitten with her, often referring to her as "my baby”. He loved holding and doting on her during her frequent visits to his home.
Sonny enjoyed visiting with others in the community and getting together regularly with his best friend, Dale. He took pleasure greeting everyone he met during his travels in the community, whether out shopping, at medical appointments, or going out to eat. In the summer he looked forward to riding in a horse drawn carriage at the Orleans County Fair happily waving at all fair goers as he passed by. To those who loved him he was affectionately considered the Mayor of Barton!
We want to thank Bayada Hospice Services for their wonderful support and care at the end of Sonny’s life.

After working for Spaulding Fibre Company and Gorham Research in NH, Bob and partner Gordon Mills had a vision. With hard work, innovation and support from the state of Vermont, EHV (Extra High Voltage) Industries was founded in 1969. EHV (later EHV Weidmann, now Weidmann Technologies) became the premier global manufacturer of the highest quality insulation for electrical transformers. Bob’s pride and joy of this time was being a part of the EHV spirit that led to growth and stability for both company and community. Bob retired from EHV Weidmann as President in 1996.
Service to others was a vibrant thread running throughout Bob’s life while working or retired. Affectionately nicknamed Mr. Nature within the family, Bob loved and observed everything in the natural world. He was an avid birdwatcher logging 56 different aviary sightings out his kitchen window over 30 years, and was often excitedly reporting the latest to the family and fellow bird lovers. Seasons, stars, sunrises and sunsets, Bob never stopped marveling and sharing his wonder and appreciation for nature with everyone around him. Six lucky grandchildren knew him as “Papa”, and he dearly treasured his time with them. He held them as babies and celebrated their milestones and achievements as they grew and launched into their own adventures. He was proud and endlessly excited to share many special experiences with them.
To know Bob Fuehrer, was to love him. He was sensitive, thoughtful, empathetic, intuitive and humble. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Vanna (DeMaio) Guldenschuh; his sister, Nancy Zimmer; her children; Wendy Guldenschuh Zimmer, and Steve Zimmer; his sister-in-law, Letitia DeMaio Lattanzi, brother-in-law, Salvatore DeMaio and his wife, Caroline Otis DeMaio, and their children, Pasquale DeMaio and Henry DeMaio; Letitia’s three children, Robert Lattanzi and wife, Effie Baram, Mark Lattanzi and wife, Renata Lattanzi, and Dina Boncek.
Jack’s great nieces and nephews include, Wendy’s children, Jake and Maggie Thorpe; Robert and Effie’s daughter, Alessa; Mark and Renata’s daughters, Ava and Taryn; and Dina’s children, Randy and Claire.
Jack was pre-deceased by his father, Carl Nelson Guldenschuh and his mother, Marian Murphy Guldenschuh.
His nieces and nephews adored him, as did the rest of his family. His out-sized physical stature, he stood 6’ 8” tall, his gentle and kind personality, combined with his sense of humor and his sharp wit and wisdom, created a unique and unforgettable human being.
Jack’s relationship with his sister, Nancy, had become closer over the last few years, after her husband, George, passed away. Jack would call her under the guise of the Channel 3 suggestion that people should check in on their “elderly” relatives. At first she would hang up on him, but gradually she came to enjoy these phone calls. She often made the 8 hour drive from Rochester, as did he, for Thanksgiving and other events.
Jack attended Bucknell University, where he played NCAA Division I basketball. He eventually earned a BS in environmental science from Nathaniel Hawthorne College. On January 25, 1972 he married Vanna DeMaio. Their honeymoon was a road trip to Alaska with their Golden Retrievers, Willie and Clara. Alaska did not pan out and they returned to the east coast. They purchased a parcel of woodland with Vanna’s brother, Sal and began to put down roots in Danville, VT.
But, family business called them back to New Haven, CT. They returned there to run the Weathervane Restaurant, the DeMaio family business, with Claire DeMaio, Vanna’s mother. Jack fit right in there as well, becoming close with the staff and skillfully bartending and doing purchasing. Claire and Jack were very close.
When the restaurant closed, Jack and Vanna returned to Vermont. They built a house and settled in Danville, starting J. & V. Logging and Excavating. Again, Jack was right at home, buying and selling equipment, land and timber. He became an expert mechanic. As he approached retirement, he processed firewood and remained very active and industrious. He loved to hunt and fish.
Jack loved dogs. He was predeceased by Willie, Clara, Daffy, Pokey, Frank, Betsey, Hercules, Cappy and Skipper…and cats, Scaredo, Nummy, Stubby, and Fluffy.
Jack provided a welcoming environment in his home for his and Vanna’s many friends and relatives. To say he will be missed is an understatement. To say he was loved is simply the truth.
A party to celebrate Jack’s life will be held on Sunday, September 29, 2019, at the Tempson Barn, 695 Town Farm Dr., Lyndonville, VT 05851. @ 2:00.

Catherine (Cappy) Delia Mitchell
....show , 88 of Lyndonville, Vermont passed away on September 28th, 2019 surrounded by family. She was born July 1st, 1931 to William and Ella (Rock) Payette.
Cappy met the love of her life at age 19. After 4 years of being pursued by David Mitchell, the two were married in August of 1953.
Cappy was “small, but mighty”! There was certainly nothing small about her sense of humor. She had an easy (filterless) way of bringing lightness and laughter to any conversation. She loved people and made everyone feel at home with a smile so big it reached her eyes, a strong one-of-a-kind hug, and probably a home-cooked meal.
For over twenty years Cappy worked at EHV Weidmann. She was a hard worker and took pride in the physical aspect and detail she applied to her job. Never missing a day. For those virtues and traits she was respected and admired by all.
Cappy loved her family and was happiest when her house was full of kids; hers and everyone else's. She adored her boys and fondly retold countless stories of them and all of the hilarious adventures (trouble) they got into. She was famous for always making delicious meals (large enough to feed the entire neighborhood). She was a fun-loving grandmother; keeping everyones favorite treats in stock. She's also known for finding the best, most unique gifts.
Cappy loved driving and always looked forward to going on nightly rides with Dave and her dog, Chip. In her early years she enjoyed playing bingo at various local venues with friends and family. While she was always frugal and responsible with her finances, she would save up for the gambling trips she so enjoyed to take with her family, friends and her sister, Donna. When it came to the casino she had an “easy come, easy go” attitude and would already be planning her next trip on the way home.
Cappy and Dave had 5 ‘little angels.’ When they say “it takes a village,” that was no understatement for Dave and Cappy, as they raised many other children in their home, in addition to their own and many of them even called her “Mom”. Cappy is survived by 4 sons: Dale Mitchell, Sr., Dennis “Dan” Mitchell, Sr. (Michelle Hagman), Dwight “Ike” Mitchell, Sr. (Autumn Prim), and Douglas Mitchell (Elizabeth Hubbard); 10 grandchildren: Amy Mitchell, Jennifer Adams (Kurt), Ann Ruggles (George Jr.), Dennis Mitchell, Jr. (Paula Aliano), Dale Mitchell, Jr., Lisa Mitchell, Dawn Mitchell, Meghan Mitchell, Dwight Mitchell, Jr., and Dana Mitchell; 9 great-grandchildren: Kyle, Jordan, Nikko, Landon, Sonoma, David, Will, Lydia, and Jake; her dog, Chip; her siblings; June Mitchell (Leslie), and Donna Dubray (Peter); sisters-in-law: Alona and Phyllis Payette; other loved ones: Valerie Carreau, Rose Ramsdell, and Jen Mitchell; several nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
Cappy is predeceased by her son, David A. Mitchell, her Husband David Mitchell; her parents, William and Ella Payette. Her sister Agness and brother-in-law Donald Dickerman; Her brothers William, Albert, Reg and Dennis Payette.
Cappy had a real zest for life, a playful nature, and an infectious eye-crinkling smile that, thankfully, was passed down to her boys and their children. She will live on in our hearts, minds, thoughts and laugh lines forever.
The family would like to thank the many friends and various family members, along with Caledonia Home Health and Hospice, Corner Medical, and NVRH, for their immense kindness and support over the past several years. Their contributions to Dave and Cappy’s health and happiness are greatly appreciated.
