During most of those years on Long Island, Rod also worked as an artist/illustrator in New York City creating illustrations for several agencies. His illustrations appeared in books and nine magazines, including House Beautiful, Gourmet Magazine and The New Yorker. His drawings and paintings appeared in many group and solo shows and won several first-place awards. One of his exhibits was selected for funding by the New York State Council of the Arts. Most of them are now in private collections. One of his greatest joys was co-exhibiting at Catamount Arts with his son: Rod’s paintings and Christopher’s photographs.

As a matter of fact, his was the seventh generation of the Wells family to have lived in Danville, VT, a town that his fifth great-grandfather, Paul Wells, helped to found. As he summered in the Northeast Kingdom from early childhood, the Vermont landscape became the favorite subject of his paintings, even as a preteen. This love affair with the Vermont landscape had but deepened over the years.
Retiring from teaching in 1986, he and his wife, Terry, moved to Danville, and opened The Roderick Wells Art Gallery there, the fulfillment of his life-long dream. Although the gallery was closed when they moved to St. Johnsbury in 1995, Rod continued to paint and have exhibits.
Rod also enjoyed reading, gardening, building projects, walking and traveling. He was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church, member of the Fairbanks Museum, St. Johnsbury Athenaeum, Catamount Acts, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Knights of Pythias, Damon Lodge #16 in Danville. Above all, he was a kindly and dependable gentleman, a devoted husband, son, father, brother and patriot.
Surviving Rod is his daughter Karen Wells Rodriquez and her husband Daniel of Rocky Point, Long Island, his son Christopher Wells of Brooklyn, NY, stepson David Porrello of St. Johnsbury, grandson Johnny Rodriquez and wife Rachelle of Virginia, grandson Nickolas Porrello of Los Angles, CA, and great grandsons Greyson and Gabriel Rodriquez. Also, his sisters-in-law Janet W. Wells of Bellingham, WA and Mary McFadden of Boca Raton FL, brother-in-law Bernard McFadden and wife Barbara of Williamport, PA and several cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.

Gary Wells (USN Ret.), his sister Francena Van Voorhis and husband Lee of Marlborough, MA, sister-in-law Brenda Wells, stepson Mark Porrello, brother-in-law Thomas McFadden, several cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.
A gathering will be held June 4th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sayles Funeral Home, St. Johnsbury and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Main St., St. Johnsbury at 2 p.m. on June 5th. Conrad “Connie” Doyon
....show - St. Johnsbury lost one of its most beloved citizens on Tuesday morning, June 18, 2019.
Surrounded by his loving family, Conrad “Connie” Doyon, 89, died peacefully at NVRH after several months of declining health.
Conrad was born on July 3, 1929, in Morgan, Vermont to Leopold Doyon and Emelda (nee Fateaux) Doyon. The eldest of four children Connie was raised on the family farm in Kirby where French was the language of the household. Connie loved learning and believed in the power and democratic tradition of a public education. His elementary grades were spent at a one room school house in Kirby where he leaned English and became a top student. During high school he would ride his horse, “Speedly,” down the Kirby Mountain road each day to meet the Lyndon Institute bus. A National Honor Society member, Connie graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1948 and attended the University of Maine in Orono, and The Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University.
The great love and partnership of Conrad’s life has been his wife Theresa. They married on July 11th, 1959 and would have celebrated 60 years of marriage this summer. Theresa survives him, as do his three children: Lisbeth Gee and her family of Hillsboro, N.H.; Timothy Doyon and his wife Patsy and their two sons Heath and Nathan, of Waterford, Vermont; and Deborah Doyon and her son Odin of St. Johnsbury, Vt. Surviving siblings include Connie’s sister, Marina Nadeau and her husband Wendell Nadeau of Enfield, Conn.; and brother, George Doyon and his wife Liz of San Antonio, Texas.
Connie had a distinguished professional career, serving as the Vice President of The First National Bank (merger to Howard Bank), and later as the Personnel Director and Financial/Credit Collections Officer for the newly established Northeast Vermont Regional Hospital (NVRH). It was, however, as a dedicated, principled and passionate public servant where he won the respect, admiration and love of so many within St. Johnsbury, the Northeast Kingdom and the State of Vermont. In 2006, Secretary of State Deb Markowitz recognized Connie with a Vermont Public Service Award for his more than 50 years of volunteer service noting that he was an “unsung hero of our democracy.” A Rotarian, Lister, and Act 250 Commissioner, Connie was also one of the Founders and the first Treasurer of Vermont Student Assistant Cooperation, a Trustee and Treasurer of St. Johnsbury Hospital, and NVRH, on the Board of Directors for NVDA, Board of Corporators at NVRH, and a trustee of Public Funds for the town of St. Johnsbury and past President of the Vermont Institute of Banking.
A life-long Democrat and the Democratic Chairman for Caledonia County and the State of Vermont, Connie helped to launch the careers of many State and National leaders including Governors Madeline Kunin and Howard Dean, Senator Patrick Leahy and Congressman Peter Welch. Connie and Theresa’s living room was a joyful gathering place for politicians and community members to discuss their ideas and aspirations, and to strategize and build campaigns and coalitions. Connie, however, chose to serve his community and State more quietly. He repeatedly declined Governor Dean’s suggestion to run for State Senate, but was a dedicated Justice of the Peace for 65 years; a role in which he championed equality and inclusion for all. He celebrated the passage of Vermont’s civil union and marriage equality laws and presided over multiple same-sex civil unions.
A true gentleman with the warmest of handshakes, a quick wit and a kind word for everyone, Connie Doyon, will be deeply missed by his loving family, large circle of friends, and grateful community.
In keeping with his humble demeanor, Connie has asked that there be no calling hours or funeral services. Instead, the family requests that friends and well-wishers dedicate some time to public service in Connie’s honor, participate in public life, vote their conscience and care for their neighbors and communities.

Lorette Elise (Carreau) Desrochers
....show , 92, of St. Johnsbury, VT, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2019. She was born on Dec. 9, 1926, in St. Johnsbury to Alcide and Marie Rose (Marois) Carreau. She was raised on the family farm in the Spaulding District of St. Johnsbury.
In 1951, Lorette married Francis J. Desrochers, and they enjoyed 45 years together until his passing in 1997. Together, they raised six children and operated Desrochers Pharmacy on Main Street. She managed many aspects of the family business, including bookkeeping, cooking lunch specials for the soda fountain, and making the baked goods for the drugstore. She worked at the Passumpsic Bank before getting married and worked at the Citizens Bank after she and Francis sold the drugstore.
Even with the chaos of children and the business of the drugstore, Lorette found time to volunteer and give back to the community that meant so much to her. She loved promoting St. Johnsbury whether through her time volunteering at the Visitor's Center, the Fairbanks Museum Welcome Desk, or keeping the town gardens weed-free and attractive. Frequently, Lorette would bring home stranded tourists, providing bed and breakfast in her home. She often stayed in touch with those travelers over the years, as she was a devoted local good-will ambassador. Lorette also served as a court translator and Guardian Ad litem, assisting those with little voice and especially advocating for the elderly who were alone and without family. She helped balance checkbooks, provide transportation to appointments, and visited many who were in the hospital or nursing homes. Lorette was a longtime member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church where, among other things, she frequently sang in the funeral choir.
Lorette graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy, class of 1945. She served as Class Secretary and hostess to many reunion gatherings. She also gave time to the Alumni Office, served on the Alumni Council and rode herd over groups of freshmen students working in the gardens of St. Johnsbury during student volunteer day. It was during this time that many of those students learned about hands-on work ethic and caring for one's community.
Recognizing the volunteer service Lorette so generously gave over the years, she received the Northeast Kingdom Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year Award, she was honored as a Fairbanks Museum Fellow, and St. Johnsbury Academy recognized her with the Northeast Kingdom Service Award.
From teaching woodcarving, to organizing classes at the Passumpsic Valley Guild, to quilting, rug braiding, sewing, and knitting, there are lots of places where one can find examples of Lorette's handiwork. The time she spent with her sewing and quilting groups gave the creative time she desired while also providing the opportunity to catch up with dear friends and whatever the news of the day might have been. She was enthusiastic about her daily walks around town, and in 2007, she received the Healthy Aging Vigor and Vitality Award from Governor Jim Douglas.
Lorette is survived by children: Jeanne Desrochers (John Miller), Robert (Linda) Desrochers, William (Judythe) Desrochers, Dennis Desrochers, Mark (Peg) Desrochers, Lisa (Duane) Diefenbach; Grandchildren: Emma (Bruce) Rowe, Julie Desrochers (Matthew Holland), Samuel Desrochers, Kate Desrochers, Frances Desrochers, Grace Desrochers, Madeleine Desrochers, Leo Desrochers, Molly Diefenbach, Ethan Diefenbach and her first Great Grandchild due in July. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Simone Carreau, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by Husband, Francis; Siblings: Paul Carreau, Claire Twiss, Robert Carreau, Anita Warburton, infant brother George and son-in-law, John Manges.
Visitation will be at Sayles Funeral Home, 525 Summer St, St. Johnsbury, VT on Monday, June 17th, 2-4 pm, and 6-8 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church on Tuesday, June 18th at 11:00 am. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Cards for the family may be directed to Mark Desrochers, 72 Clarks Ave, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Lorette's memory may be made to The Fairbanks Museum, 1302 Main St, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819, or St Johnsbury History and Heritage Center, 421 Summer St., St. Johnsbury, VT 05819.
The family would like to thank the staff of The Canterbury Inn for the care provided to Lorette for the past four years and to the team at NVRH for making her last days peaceful and comfortable.
In honor of Lorette's love of gardens, you could plant something in her memory that will make your piece of the world a more beautiful place. And always be prepared to make a casserole for a friend (or a stranger) in need.

Lucien A. Belanger
....show , 78, of Sutton, VT., passed away at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital on July 25th with his beloved family by his side. He was born to Alfred Belanger and Edourdina (Paquette) Belanger in East Berkshire, VT where he grew up with his sister and three brothers.
Lucien graduated from Richford High School in 1959, married Beverly May Smith of West Fairlee, VT on September 1, 1962, and graduated from Lyndon State College in 1963. He began the first year of his teaching career in Canada, then several years as a teacher/principal in Sheffield followed by many years at Sutton Village School finishing with four years at Lyndon Institute to complete his retirement.
Lucien and Beverly purchased their Sutton farm in 1970, remodeling it for a small dairy herd of 65 cows. With the help of their three sons, they made their own hay and shipped milk until October of 2011, winning Gold Certificates of Quality every year.
Lucien enjoyed making maple syrup. He and his three sons began sugaring with shallow pans and buckets in an old shack far into the woods. With the help of brother-in-law, David H. Smith, they built a sugar house close to home, installed modern pans and a pipe-lined sap system.
Over the years, Lucien like playing badminton and horse shoes but recently thought “corn hole” was more his speed! He watched the Boston Red Sox all summer and the Montreal Canadians all winter.
