, born September 28, 1933, died August 14, 2018
Born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont on September 28, 1933, Mary Karlene Dawson French
was raised by her mother Hester and grandmother Sadie in their Orleans village home situated between a working farm and the lumberyards of the Ethan Allan Furniture Mill, where numerous members of her family worked. As a child she helped tend her grandmother’s garden, visited the Orleans County Fair, and enjoyed seeing the trout jump up Willoughby Falls. Part of a close group of friends who all attended Orleans Elementary and High School together, she went to school dances, played on the basketball team, and played saxophone in the band. After graduating high school, she went on to earn a degree from the Burdett School of Business in Boston and began work as a secretary. It was during a summer job at the Ethan Allen Furniture Mill that she met her husband Arthur, whom she married in 1952.
Their oldest daughter Katherine was born in 1953 while Arthur was stationed in San Francisco after joining the navy. When his tour of duty was over, the young family moved back to Vermont where Arthur graduated from UVM-Burlington and later worked at General Electric. Their children Melanie, David and Daniel were born there in 1956, 1959 and 1962, respectively, and Mary enthusiastically threw herself into the role of mother and homemaker. In 1963 the family moved to Concord, NH, where they lived for the next 32 years while Arthur worked at Sprague Electric and then for the State of New Hampshire. For her part, Mary was actively engaged in the lives of her children, as well as working outside the home in retail and as a lunchroom cook at Beaver Elementary.
After their retirement in 1992, she and Arthur returned to Vermont, where Mary served as a Deacon at the Westmore Community Church. She was also a member of the Westmore Ladies Aide and helped chair their Scholarship Committee. As a volunteer at the Old Stone House Museum in Brownington, she worked in the gift shop and greeted visitors. A member of the Book and Thimble Club at the Jones Memorial Library in Orleans, she also enjoyed meals out with friends as part of Westmore’s Red Hat Society and was instrumental in helping establish an RCT bus route from Westmore to Barton and Orleans so that she and her neighbors could attend senior meals. In later years, she spent winters near her sons in Concord, NH at the Pleasant View Retirement Community. But whether in Vermont or New Hampshire, she was a dedicated viewer of the game shows Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, which she watched each evening with her cat Lil, and took great pleasure in making trips made to local ice cream stands with family and friends.
Mary was predeceased by Arthur, her late husband of more than 60 years. She is also survived by her children and their families: Katherine French and Tim Hamilton of Barton, VT; Melanie French of Winthrop, MA; David and Jeannie French of Hopkinton, NH; Daniel French and Diane Curtin of Concord, NH; as well as her grandchildren: Mary Hamilton French and Leah Hamilton French of Cambridge, MA; Ben Kindregan of Winthrop, MA; Billy and Matt French of Hopkinton, NH; and Nicholas Curtin French of Concord, NH. Glen Steven Randall
....show
- It is with deep sadness the family of Glen announces his passing.
Although born in Concord, New Hampshire February 25, 1951, Glen was a Vermonter through and through. He was known for his dry Vermont humor delivered in his thick Vermont accent. So many lives are better because of him. Glen was a husband, a father, an adoptive father, a foster father and a loyal friend. Glen was the oldest child of Earle and Wanda, an only son and the best big brother his sisters could have asked for. He was the “cool” uncle. He was funny, easy going and a craft beer connoisseur before it was cool. His laugh was infectious. His cooking was exceptional and watching the Patriots and Red Sox with him was the best. He loved to spend time in the outdoors whether skiing, hunting, or riding the back roads of Vermont in his Toyota truck in the company of one or all three of his beloved canine companions.
Glen graduated from Lake Region Union High School Class of 1969. He continued his education at Vermont Technical College, earning an associate’s degree in surveying. Glen was part of the Upper Management team at Ethan Allen and finished out his career as a Burn Technician at Blanchard Oil Company.
Glen is survived by his loving wife Kay. His beloved children; Avery, Shanna, Kye and his fiancée Heather, Angel, and Merlin. His treasured father Earle. His dearly loved sisters; Susan and her wife Linda, Lenna, and Gail and her husband Skip. His adored granddaughters; Sophia and Cassidy. His cherished nephews and nieces; Devin and his wife Linnea, Lindsay and her husband Greg, Bradley, Dustin, Veronica, and Clark. And his much loved grandnephews Braylen, Kellen and Jace. Glen was predeceased by his beloved mother Wanda.
Glen was so loved that the grief our family is experiencing is daunting. There is a hole we think cannot be filled, but it will be made lighter by our memories of him and the gift it was to have him in our family.
A celebration of Glen’s life will be held on September 3rd from 1:00pm to 6:00pm at 479 Willoughby Lake Road, Barton, VT. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Mary E. Wright Halo Foundation (Newport, VT), would be greatly appreciated. The Halo Foundation provided wonderful assistance to Glen’s family in their time of need. One hundred percent of all donations go directly to families who need financial support due to the mounting cost associated with a diagnosis of cancer.
The family thanks Glen’s fellow employees at Blanchard Oil for their generous and constant support. The family thanks the wonderful community Glen called home for their support.

Jeannette B. Anderson
....show
, 87, of Craftsbury, Vermont passed away on October 17, 2018 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on August 15, 1931 in Ware, MA to Roger and Nellie (Scott) Atwood. On December 8, 1947 she married Percy Martin who predeceased her on December 5, 1963. On November 1, 1968 she married Robert Anderson who predeceased her on June 18, 2008.
An extremely hard worker, Jeannette owned and operated dairy farms in Albany and Craftsbury for many years. She and her husband Percy operated the Bellcliff Farm in Craftsbury, where they milked registered Holsteins, until his passing; she carried on farming there with the help of her parents and sons for several years until she remarried. Together, she and Robert continued farming at his home farm in Craftsbury until 1992, when they sold their milking cows but continued raising young stock, haying and cutting firewood. Never idle, Jeannette continued to work her land well into her 80s with the help of her family; she put her last bale of hay up in the barn in 2015.
A woman with a strong independent streak, Jeannette was never shy about letting her opinion be known, loudly and pointedly. A dedicated mother and grandmother, she loved her family deeply and always made sure to spend as much time with them as possible while also serving as babysitter for a seemingly endless parade of grandchildren and great grandchildren, instilling her tireless work ethic, sense of right and wrong and a bit of a stubborn streak in another generation. Over the years, she helped care for several ailing family members, including her husband Robert, her grandmother Annie Scott, her parents and her son Roger.
Jeannette was a member of the United Church of Craftsbury Common and the Horse and Buggy Club of Craftsbury. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, wreath making, cutting firewood, playing cards, sugaring, haying and enthusiastically and loudly cheering on her grandchildren and great grandchildren at sporting events. She also loved, and was famous for, making homemade bread, pies and her renowned raised glazed donuts, which warranted a stoppage of town meeting upon their arrival every year and were always in high demand at Craftsbury Academy’s school store or whenever word got out she was deep frying.
Later in life she spent her springs, summers and falls working in her vegetable gardens; tomato plants were sprouting in small pots in her living room by late March each year, and the final tomatoes were often harvested from the greenhouse eight months later with snow back on the ground. Jeannette was an avid Red Sox supporter in a family full of Yankees fans; she was sure to catch the game on NESN every day, even if it meant taking an early-evening nap to watch a game on the west coast later that night.
She is survived by her children: Roger Martin and his wife Patty of Craftsbury, VT, Paul Martin and his wife Rita of Albany, VT, and Randy Martin and his wife Michele of Craftsbury, VT, her daughter-in-law Sheryl Martin of Craftsbury, VT, 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren, her siblings: Philip Atwood and his wife Janice of Grafton, VT, and Sarah Lyon of Naples, FL, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son Bruce Martin, her brother Eugene Atwood, and her granddaughter Lucinda.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, Oct. 25 at 11:00 A.M. at the Craftsbury Common Cemetery with burial to follow. Should friends desire, contributions in her memory may be made to Orleans-Essex, V.N.A. and Hospice, Inc., 46 Lakemont Road, Newport, Vermont 05855.

On Thursday, October 11, 2018, Clifford Timpson
....show
, loving husband, master teacher, and generous friend passed into the next world after a short illness. He was only 54.
Cliff was born on November 8th, 1963 in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and he spent his formative years at the family farm in Exeter, R.I. After high school he was offered scholarships to continue his study of music. He was a fabulous trumpet player and spent one summer in Europe performing with a concert band. Instead of music he chose to pursue his love of languages and history at the University of Vermont. For his B.A. degree he double-majored in German, Russian, and Eastern European studies. He earned his Master of Arts in German language and literature in May, 1988. Cliff also mastered Latin and developed a working knowledge of both Czech and the Gaelic language of his Irish ancestors. During his studies at UVM he had the great fortune to meet and marry Leesa, a woman known for her patience and intelligence. After years of pursuit, she agreed to marry him, for better or for worse. The date was July 11, 1987.
For many years he worked as a teacher of German at St. Michael's College and German & Latin at Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans. His students revered him, and they proudly represented BFA at UVM’s Latin Day, replete in togas. Additionally, Cliff became a master homebrewer, winning many, many awards for his beer. Cliff had a passion for cooking. Although he learned some from cooking in various restaurants in Vermont and Rhode Island, he was mainly self taught through deep reading on the history of various cuisines. His students were the beneficiaries of not only his playful teaching style but of the vast array of food he prepared for his classes. Every cultural festival of the Russians, Germans, and Romans were explored through cuisine.
Cliff loved all things Tolkien and he told Leesa once, “all I want to do is be a hobbit, cook good food, work in a garden, and feed people when they walk in the door.” He loved to cook for people, and no one wanted to miss dinner if he was in the kitchen. He was a master. In his last year of life, Cliff achieved his life-long dream of starting his own bakery. The Emerald Isle Bakery in Island Pond represents his Irish heritage.
On a lighter note, besides his cooking, brewing, languages, and music, Cliff was known for an acute absence of organizational skills. This combined with a propensity to collect books and other paraphenalia has created a problematic situation. To wit: Cliff left a wide array of items that his wife doesn't know what to do with. Five hundred pounds of cookbooks? Eight hundred pounds of German and Latin books? You get the idea.
Cliff was predeceased by his parents, Thomas E. and Diane (King) Timpson and his best friend Susie Minchak. He is survived by his wife, Leesa (Guay), his brothers Michael and Thomas, many nieces and nephews, countless ex-students, and friends. A funeral mass will be held in St. James Church, Island Pond, Vermont on Saturday, October 20th at 11:00 AM to be followed by a reception at the American Legion Post #80 in Island Pond. Friends may call from 6-8 P.M. on Friday October 19, 2018 at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 1199 Railroad Street, Island Pond. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. James Parish capital fund or to the scholarship fund of the German Department at the University of Vermont.
