Bernard E. Urie

, 96, of West Glover went to be with his Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, on January 17, 2018.
He was born in Andersonville on January 5, 1922, the son of Ernest and Mary Comer Urie.
On December 29, 1945 he married Elaine Louise Alexander, who predeceased him on March 17, 2015, having been married almost 70 years.
Surviving him are his five children, including Kathy, Manchester, New Hampshire and friend Zane, Elizabeth Bomberger, Hinesburg, and husband Glenn, Philip, Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania and wife Frances, Stuart, Tampa, Florida and wife Darlene, and Michael, Wichita, Kansas and wife Claudia; and his grandchildren Allyson Wind, Dickson City, Pennsylvania and husband Kyle, Nathanael Urie, Lincoln, Nebraska, Calvin Urie, Tunkhannock, PA, Annalise Bomberger, Hinesburg, and Barbara and Ana Sophia Urie, Wichita, KS. Also surviving him is a sister, Beverly Grant, Barre, two sisters-in-law, Pearl Urie, West Glover and Ellen Urie, Barton, a brother-in-law, Donald King, West Glover, and many nieces and nephews.
Bernard was predeceased by his three brothers Howard, Long Island, New York and Edwin and John, West Glover, and sisters Mary Ellen Knapp, Somerville, New Jersey, and Harriet King, West Glover.
Bernard served as a Glover selectman and Overseer of the Poor, and on the UCC Parish Council. Bernard drove trucks for his father, helping to install the first electric poles in Orleans County and build the Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire. He ran his own trucking business after getting married, hauling logs and sawdust and then plowing snow for the Town of Glover and hauling milk in cans.
As youngsters his older children went with him on the “milk fruit” (route) picking up milk at farms on the way to Findysen’s Creamery in Lyndonville. He always said only Rene Perron handled more milk cans than he did. He drove can and bulk milk trucks for Buttrick’s Creamery in East Montpelier throughout the 1960’s. He also hauled milk into the Kraft plant in South Troy for Earl LaClair, South Barton, whom he had great respect for.
While picking up milk at Val LeBlanc’s farm in Barton Bernard was offered a calf sired by Arlinda Chief for $50. Ida, nick-named “Charlie Brown” by Stuart and Michael, was the foundation for a tremendous cow family. He loved his registered Holsteins and bred many “mortgage-lifters”. Of his best cows he would smile and say: “Quality, quality, quality”. Bernard also worked for more than a dozen farmers in Barton and Glover, including David Owen, Bud LeClerec, and Bill Tester, sugaring, haying, working in the woods, and trimming Christmas trees. He also enjoyed working for Nelson Stevens as his “mud man” building chimneys, including two for himself. He especially enjoyed working for Alden Borland, saying, “He taught me how to really work.” Bernard designed and built several model barns and also bucking bronco horses like his grandfather John had made, and stilts and walking birds for his grandchildren and others. Bernard loved his family.
This kind man is terribly missed. He would want everyone to believe in the Savior and to know he is in heaven, awaiting our arrivals, as his Bible taught him.
Much love to Lucy Longley and many thanks to the whole staff at Maple Lane Nursing Home for caring for him so well.
Bernard’s funeral in Barton and interment in Andersonville will be in the spring. Donations may presently be made to the Glover Historical Society.

, 86, of North Troy, Vermont passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on December 30, 2017. He was born in North Troy to George and Myrtle Vincent on April 22, 1931. He grew up one of ten children and lived most of his life in North Troy. Maurice joined the United States Army and served during the Korean War. He worked in Plywood/Veneer industry his entire career, retiring from Columbia Forest Products as a plant supervisor in 1996.
Maurice went by several names, Maurice, Moe, Dad, but none he loved to hear more than Papa. He dedicated his entire life to his wife, his children, and especially his grandchildren. Moe was a hard working man that dedicated long hours to his job, but he always made time for his grandchildren. Most of them would come on a Friday night and hated to go home on Sunday night every weekend. After his retirement, Maurice and Gloria’s nightly routine consisted of going from house to house visiting their four boys and grandchildren. It was a very rare occasion that he missed a night but if he did he always called to check in and tell them he loved them. He took great pride in helping educate his grandchildren by providing them with the gift of tuition. Maurice loved to spend time with his boys hunting and fishing. He always looked forward to their yearly fishing trips to New York with his sons and close friends. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 28 where he frequented often to socialize with his many friends in his younger years. Maurice had a strong faith in God, the Catholic Religion and he belonged to the St. Vincent de Paul and Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Maurice married his soul mate Gloria Hart on September 6, 1954. Gloria was the other half that completed him and the love of his life. In their 63 years of marriage they provided a loving home to their four sons. Their door was always open to their family and friends. Maurice’s world was changed forever when his youngest son, Chris passed away unexpectedly in 2007. Mary Fedele Chaffee
....show
died peacefully at the Union House Nursing Home in Glover, VT on February 1, 2018. She was born on April 14, 1925, in Rochester, NY to the late Cosmo and Maria (Antetomaso) Fedele.
She graduated from Newport High School in 1943 and on August 7, 1949 she married Edwin (Ted) Earl Chaffee, who predeceased her in 2008. Mary was well known in the Newport area as part owner, with her siblings, of the Fedele Grocery Store, one of several business enterprises that the family owned and operated, serving this community for some 60 years, first on the Glen Road and later on Main Street. Most days, Mary could be seen at the cash register, greeting all the customers with a smile and her hearty little laugh. When not behind the counter, she was most likely behind the scenes tending to the abundance of paperwork required in running a business – reports, payroll, bills, and more reports.
As a faith-filled woman, Mary regularly attended services at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and participated in the Daughters of Isabella. She served her community as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and strongly supported her husband in his very extensive volunteer work with The Shriners. Mary participated with Ted in activities and events of the Newport Elks Club as he was a life member. Ted was also a Navy veteran of World War II, having served on a Patrol Torpedo (PT) Boat and subsequently, for many years, Mary and Ted participated in PT Boat Association reunions held annually in various locations throughout the country. Mary and Ted were also active in the Community Circle and enjoyed numerous trips with friends traveling throughout the US, as well as to the Caribbean and several countries in Europe.
Perhaps her most favorite trip occurred in September 1994 when she and Ted, along with her brothers Frank and John, their wives Martha and Agnes, and Bob and Lorraine Lenton toured Italy for two weeks, including a visit to Gaeta, the birthplace of her parents. Mary was grateful to make that trip as visiting the country of her family was important to her. While Mary thoroughly enjoyed traveling and touring, she also loved entertaining in her own home, focusing primarily on her family. With her family first philosophy she constantly showed genuine interest and concern not only for family members, but their numerous friends as well. She was most comfortable in her own kitchen, preparing food and making sure there was plenty on hand for whomever might drop in.
It was not uncommon for the Ted and Mary household to host a number of family members and friends for an afternoon of football, baseball or hockey. She always greeted visitors with “Have you eaten?” or “What would you like to eat?” Anyone who visited her home will easily remember her encouragement to “eat, eat” or in the words of the Italians, “Mangia, mangia!” Mary will always be lovingly remembered for preparing one of her family’s favorite meals, an Italian homemade potato pasta called gnocchi. Over the years, Mary was adamant about reading her daily newspapers from start to finish each evening including the Boston Globe. She loved a good game of cards and particularly enjoyed the card game Aggravation. While she was an avid watcher of the TV show, The Price is Right, later in her retirement she was also enthusiastic about watching cooking shows. Her brother Frank, also being retired, would cross the street and together they enjoyed watching such well known chefs as Emeril Lagasse, among others.
Mary was predeceased by her brothers Anthony, John, Cosmo, Frank and Alexander.
She is survived by her son Robert Chaffee and his wife Lynda of Morgan and by her daughter, Donna Chaffee of Newport. She is also survived by the following: Grandchildren Charlie, Tony, and Catie Ratazak; Tara Patten and her husband
Adam, Zachary Chaffee, Samantha Brainard and her husband Josh; great-grandchildren Bailey Cloney, Caitlin and Treyton Patten, Jacob and Jase Brainard; by her sister Elizabeth Lemieux, her sister-in-law Pricilla Maslack, and by several nieces and
nephews who adored her.
Funeral services will be held in the spring at a date to be announced.

Elizabeth Ruth Redington
....show
, 94, daughter of Thomas and Isabel (Derusha) Redington, passed away at her family home Thursday March 2, 2018.
Born prematurely, April 20 1923, in St. Johnsbury maternity hospital, Elizabeth was the second child of the family. Her brother (Charles) Frederick was five years old at the time of Elizabeth's birth. After graduation from Barton Academy in 1943, Elizabeth's career at the Howard Bank spanned 41 years. She enjoyed her job, meeting people and the fact that she could work close to her home.
Elizabeth lived in her family home in Barton all of her life and spent idyllic days at the nearby family camp, Draycott Lodge, on Shadow Lake. Elizabeth's stories at camp abound with autobiographical tales of fishing, swimming, wildlife, summer friends, the dancehall, and chaperones. Elizabeth's Barton stories revolve around the family blacksmith shop, mother, adventures with friends, constructing with Frederick, and the musical band made of friends & family, "The Happy Gang". Elizabeth was proud to spend her life devoted to the care of her family and friends.
Elizabeth and Frederick were inseparable and Elizabeth made sure that he was included in all the family activities. Due to Frederick's handicaps this required a tremendous effort which Elizabeth took on from an early age until Frederick passed away at 56 years. Elizabeth's compassion, strength, and endless time to help others was evident throughout her life; in the last month of her life she sought ways to help others and expressed how much she would like to continue living for another 10 years if she was able to help others. Like many Vermonters, Elizabeth was born into a family of storytellers. With her exceptional memory, Elizabeth entertained, consoled, and intrigued listeners with her repertoire of oral stories. Elizabeth's anecdotal history was her way of sharing with her listeners her love of the people and places in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. Curiosity made Elizabeth ever interested in other's stories and the changing world. She was not shy to voice her opinions, or advocate for the less fortunate, and yet was humble enough to revise her opinions as times changed .Elizabeth took up motorcycling until her early 80's,and against all wishes climbed under the camp to fix the plumbing in her late 80's. She was intrigued by technological advances and enjoyed participating in email so that she could connect with family afar. Until recently Elizabeth served on the Board of the Crystal Lake Falls Historical Association, while also contributing time and knowledge to several the local historical societies. A room in the Barton Historical Museum is furnished with objects and archives, contributed from her family's blacksmith shop.
Elizabeth was a member of many community groups over the years, including the Order of the Eastern Star, the Victory Corps, and Shadow Lake Association. As a member of the Barton Academy Alumni she attended every alumni banquet for 72 years from the year of her graduation until the year of 2015.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her father Tom, mother Isabel, and brother Frederick as well as Aunt Jen Chesley, Aunt Gertrude Sawyer, and Uncle Guy Sawyer.
Elizabeth is survived by her long time friend Barbara Hobbs. She is also survived by cousins Stuart Barter of Barton and Christine Rainer of Canada; Wayne Barter of Belgium; Elizabeth Rainer of Canada; Mary Ireland of England; Anne Letica of New Zealand; Geoff Redington of Australia; and extended family.
There will be an announcement for a graveside service to be held at a later date.

Hazel Doris Beaton Morley (Woodrow)
....show
, 90, of Orleans, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, March 1st. 2018 at the North Country Hospital in Newport.
She was born on October 3rd, 1927 in Lisbon, NH. She was the daughter of the late Neil and Elizabeth (Schoff) Woodrow.
Hazel grew up in Windsor N. H. on the family farm. In the book History of Windsor it shares about when she was a school girl. Hazel walked or rode her bike 15 miles roundtrip to school. Sometimes she balanced 2 gallons of maple syrup on the bike to be delivered on route to school.
Hazel will always be remembered by her children and grandchildren as loving and kind who made everything special for them from sewing and knitting their clothes, making dance costumes, and baking special treats. Her house was always filled with culinary smells of love.
When her children were little she was a leader in 4-H teaching cooking.
Hazel loved to square dance, walk, was an avid reader, and enjoyed her flower gardens. Hazel was also a devoted member of the Orleans Federated Church.
Hazel retired from Slalom Ski Wear after 20 years of service were she was a seamstress.
Hazel had six sisters that she was very close too. One of her sisters Sally shared this memory on Hazel’s passing. “For anyone who knows my family, then you know there were seven of us girls (poor dad).
When I was growing up on the farm in Windsor, N. H. I use to love going out at night and searching the stars. I would always seek out the Pleiades Star Cluster called the Seven Sisters and count them to make sure there were always seven (not always easy with the naked eye). I would always say, "That is my sisters and I". I still did that even in adulthood. I know that if I were able to see them now, that I would only be able to count six, but then every once in a while, I would see a twinkling as it moved in and out of my sight. I know in my mind that I would hear her say, "See I am here - always in your heart". Rest in peace my dear, dear sister. You completed us. The number seven means completion.”
