She attended a one-room school in Dalton before going to Dalton High School, then transferring to Lancaster Academy for her Senior year, graduating in 1945. She married George I. McVetty, Jr. in 1948. After living in Jefferson for about a year, they returned to her parents’ home farm in Dalton to manage her family’s farm. They raised their family through adulthood, where all three children stayed close to home, choosing to live on the property where their parents and grandparents before them had resided. After selling the dairy cows, they continued to garden and work the land and forest for many years, maintaining the title of American Tree Farm for some time.
Betty was employed for many summers cleaning the employee dormitories at the Mountain View Hotel in Whitefield, as well as housekeeping for people who owned seasonal homes in the area. Anyone who was acquainted with her knew she loved to cook, and made sure visitors didn’t leave without sharing a meal or some cookies warm from the oven. Gardening was one of her passions, always preserving vegetables, berries and applesauce for family and friends. Spring was a special time of year, when she boiled maple sap on the kitchen wood stove, sometimes peeling the wallpaper from the steam. Maple syrup and sugar were staples in the household. This Shining Moment in the Now by David Budbill
When I work outdoors all day, every day, as I do now, in the fall,
getting ready for winter, tearing up the garden, digging potatoes,
gathering the squash, cutting firewood, making kindling, repairing
bridges over the brook, clearing trails in the woods, doing the last of
the fall mowing, pruning apple trees, taking down the screens,
putting up the storm windows, banking the house—all these things,
as preparation for the coming cold...
When I am every day all day all body and no mind, when I am
physically, wholly and completely, in this world with the birds,
the deer, the sky, the wind, the trees...
When day after day I think of nothing but what the next chore is,
when I go from clearing woods roads, to sharpening a chain saw,
to changing the oil in a mower, to stacking wood, when I am
all body and no mind...
When I am only here and now and nowhere else—then, and only
then, do I see the crippling power of mind...

Her calling in life was not to marry and have children of her own; she chose to dedicate her life to lovingly care for her parents, immediate family members, and others she held dear to her heart.
Along her family’s side she worked hard on the farm. In the early 1950's she worked at a nursing home in Lancaster, NH and then later in the 50's and early 60's, she worked at Weeks Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, NH as a dietitian. In 1982 she was asked to help an elderly friend at home during this friend’s illness. Marie was a loyal friend, confidant and employee and as such she never refused helping her friends like Ms. Bobbie Pollard and her husband, Lyle in their store retail store, "The Hideaway Shop" in Lancaster, NH.
In the pursuing years from 1983 to 2003 she along with her sister Aurora retired in Littleton enjoying their time with her great-grandnephew Nathan Lloyd and great-grandniece Nicole Lloyd Whipple as well as helping and caring for anyone in need.
In the fall of 2004 at the age of 83, just prior being diagnosed with dementia, she moved to Elizabeth City, NC where she lived for the last ten years of her life in the home with her great-niece and spouse Rita and David Cornelius, and their children, Justin, Brianna, and Aunt Be’s "little doll," Kayla. She enjoyed the warm climate and her family there for as long as her memory allowed.
When her health severely declined, she was then taken care of by the caring staff of The Kindred Care Nursing Home in Elizabeth City, NC until her passing.
She leaves behind a trail of many fond memories by nieces and nephews and others she touched with her kind heart and caring hands.

....show
, 90, of Forest Lake Road, passed away on January 3 with her husband and two daughters by her side following several years of declining health. She also had several faithful friends and caregivers assisting the family.
Evelyn was born in East Concord, VT on July 31, 1926. She was the daughter of Norman Crawford and Minola Carr Crawford. She attended school in Gilman. Evelyn married Robert A. Grimard on February 12, 1947 and they remained in the North Country raising their two daughters.
Evelyn was active in the community and church. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters, Emblem Club, Bethlehem Country Club, Red Hat Society, and local bowling leagues. She was an avid golfer and spent many hours on the golf course, enjoying every minute of this time.
Evelyn’s talents extended to quilting, sewing, knitting, and crocheting. Her family was the recipients of many of her beautiful items that she made including baby blankets, quilts, and sweaters. She was an avid cook who enjoyed learning new recipes. She belonged to the Whitefield Extension Group for many years where she learned many new recipes and made many new friends.
In the late 70’s Evelyn and Robert purchased a camp on Forest Lake which became their summer residence until her death. In the late 80’s they built a home in Cape Coral, FL and continued wintering there until 5 years ago when her health began to decline. She loved her Florida home and took pride in decorating it and making it a beautiful place for them to spend their winters. They made new friends there and Evelyn continued her golfing on Florida golf courses. She continued her sense of community by volunteering at the Cape Coral Hospital and joining the Red Hat Society. She spent many hours working on her quilts, doing hand-work on many of them. She loved her life in Florida but was always ready to return to Forest Lake to spend summers with her family.
Evelyn was predeceased by her parents and all her siblings: Eleanor, Eva, Ethel, Ellen, Clyde, and Clarence. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law Herbert Hennessey, Jr. and her two sisters-in-law Rita Grimard Altamuro and Theresa Grimard Stevens who remained close to her over the years.
Evelyn is survived by her her husband Robert of Dalton; daughters Jean Bergin and husband Robert, and Joanne Hennessey; her grandchildren Derek Hennessey, Beth Hennessey Reynolds and husband Robert, Jameson Bergin and wife Ruthie, and Jonathan Bergin and wife Kate. She especially loved visits from her great grandchildren; all 8 of them!! During her declining years a visit and a hug from any of them made her smile. She was “Nanny” to all of them and will remain a very special part of their early childhood years. Her family also includes a niece, Pauline Belanger Chapman and a nephew, Raymond Belanger and his family.
The family is most thankful to Dr. Fernandez, Dr. Adams, Pat Steady, and the other Northwoods Hospice employees. A heartfelt thank you to the caregivers who also became special friends to Evelyn and her family.
There will be a funeral mass on Saturday, January 14 at St. Matthew Church in Whitefield at 11:00 AM. Evelyn was married in this church and has been a member ever since her marriage in 1947. A reception will follow at the Inn at Whitefield where friends and family can gather to celebrate Evelyn’s life.
Evelyn will be greatly missed, especially by her family. She will, however, never be forgotten!
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Gate of Heaven Parish.
