Lebanon, NH - Joan E. (Feenstra) Louzier
....show also known fondly as “Dutchess” to her husband of 65 years, Kenneth P. Louzier, Sr. and Lebanon High classmates, returned peacefully to our Lord and Savior surrounded by family on September 23rd, 2017.
Joan was born March 10, 1934 in Newport, NH to John (Jack) Feenstra and Anne (Burke) Feenstra. She moved with her family to East Douglas, MA and lived there during her youth. At the age of 13, Joan’s father, Jack was assigned to manage the Upper valley Textile Mills here in Lebanon and the family relocated. Joan quickly developed lifelong friendships with her classmates and met her future husband, Ken. Joan graduated from Lebanon High School in 1952 and she and Kenneth were married on September 13, 1952. Joan relocated with her husband while he served in the Navy to Newbury, NJ, but eventually returned to Lebanon to raise their six children and to be closer to family and friends.
Joan’s love for children is not only evident in her having and raising six children which she adored, but evident in the profession she chose to pursue. While raising her children, Joan began working as a teacher’s aide at the Follow Through Program in Lebanon. During this time, she also enrolled at Goddard College and obtained her teaching degree. After graduating from Goddard in 1975, Joan became the Head teacher at the Head Start Program in Lebanon. Joan flourished in this role and passionately worked to develop a program that genuinely gave pre school children of Lebanon and their families an environment where they were nurtured and could thrive. Joan was a staunch advocate for healthy, positive foundations for children in their formative years and strove to provide this to her own children as well as those she taught. After the reorganization of Head Start, Joan remained teaching in the classroom and taught in the Lebanon School District. When Joan retired from teaching, she continued to remain active and share her talents and love as a homecare provider.
Joan loved time with her family probably more than anything. She took terrific pleasure in holidays and looked forward to them as large family gatherings would ensue. Joan also loved supporting her children and grandchildren and expressed her absolute love by attending most events the children were involved. Joan would attend sporting events and would often bring fresh baked chocolate chip cookies for the team at halftime, she would travel to Morgan horse shows to watch her grand daughters compete in saddleseat equitation. Joan attended most, if not all graduations whether they were graduations from pre school, middle school, high school or college. Joan also made it a priority to attend her children and grandchildren’s Sacraments of Faith. Joan was a devoted Catholic and an active member of the Sacred Heart Parish in Lebanon, NH.
Although most would describe Joan as having a very demure demeanor she was a devoted Yankees fan and Celtics fan and loved to watch her teams perform. Joan did not hold back commentary if umps and/or referees needed assistance in their calls. Joan traveled to watch her Yankees in the Bronx and Boston to see her Celtics play. Joan also cherished trips to many waterways. Tops on her list were Newfound Lake where she and her young family would spend many weekends during the summer, Lebanon Pool, Sunapee Lake, Manchaug Pond where her sister, Mary and family resided, renting cottages on Crystal Lake in Enfield and Wallis Sands Beach in Rye, NH.
Joan is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Kenneth P. Louzier, Sr., her daughters, Donna McLain and husband, John of Springfield, NH, Deborah Anne Louzier of Springfield, NH,(and her children John C. West, IV and Sarah Guadagno), Michelle Jean Louzier , Suzan Mary Louzier of Lebanon, NH (her children Allison Wahrenberger and Kalen Mullin), her sons, Kenneth P. Louzier, Jr and wife Cynthia of Lebanon, NH (grandchildren Sandra Louzier, Kenneth P. LEBANON, N.H. - Col. William Frederick Luebbert
....show , U.S. Army (Ret.), who was instrumental in the development of academic computing at the U.S. Military Academy during the 1960s and 1970s, and, in retirement, was a resident of Hanover and Lebanon for nearly 40 years, died at home at The Woodlands on May 20, 2017 after a lengthy illness.
Col. Luebbert was born on November 5, 1927 in San Francisco, CA, the son of William M. and Ruby (House) Luebbert. He entered the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY, in 1945, graduating on June 7, 1949 with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering. Later that afternoon he married Nancy Connell of Erie, PA, who had graduated from Wilson College a day earlier.
After a tour with the army of occupation in Germany, Bill headed to the West Coast in the fall of 1953. His career was turning toward its ultimate course: computers.
By 1956, Bill and Nan had three daughters—Elizabeth, Susan and Nancy. Bill was completing three graduate degrees from Stanford University, culminating in a Ph.D.
The family moved to Fort Monmouth, NJ, where Bill was in charge of the Army’s earliest mobile computer—an electronic array squeezed onto a single flatbed trailer. Called MOBIDIC, it helped inspire his love of whales for the rest of his life.
In 1961 the Luebberts returned to West Point. With the exception of a few short assignments, they would remain at the Military Academy until Col. Luebbert retired in 1977.
The 1961-62 academic year at West Point found several academic deans collaborating to champion the use of computers in cadet education. They set radical goals (for the day): Every cadet should have hands-on exposure to computers, beginning in their first year; high priority should be given to making computer power available in every academic department, every cadet company and, eventually, to every classroom of the academy. Major William Luebbert was selected to lead this effort, and was assigned to the Dean’s staff as director for computing with the central Academic Computing Center as a primary responsibility. He was granted effective tenure as one of West Point’s first four permanent associate professors, a position he held until he retired in 1977.
The evolution and development of academic computing at West Point paralleled similar initiatives at Dartmouth College. Over the years, Col. Luebbert collaborated with members of the Dartmouth faculty, including John Kemeny and Tom Kurtz, prompting the Luebberts to retire to Hanover.
For several years, Col. Luebbert held positions at Thayer School of Engineering and the Kiewit Computation Center at Dartmouth. Post-Dartmouth, he established the Computer Literacy Institute, a one-man enterprise to educate the marketplace on new computers. Then, in the 1990s, he took part in education-training-implementation projects for the International Executive Services Corps (IESC—a nonprofit organization dedicated to equitable, sustainable economic growth in developing countries) that took him to Albania, Egypt, Nepal, the Soviet Union and Zimbabwe.
From its opening in 1986 until recent years, Bill and Nan were regular volunteers and committee members at David’s House, the resource for families with children being treated at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He was also active with computer literacy programs in the Upper Valley and in SCORE.
Col. Luebbert is survived by his wife of 67 years, Nan; daughters Elizabeth (Peter) Stoll of Albuquerque NM, Susan Luebbert (Chris Hill) of Pittsburgh PA, and Nancy Luebbert (Jim Wallis) of Moscow ID. Grandchildren include Virginia Stoll of Seattle WA, Rebecca Stoll of Hamden CT, Chris Congdon (Anne Daily) of Evans City PA, and Brian Luebbert-Hill of Pittsburgh PA. He also has a great-grandson, Marcus Congdon of Evans City PA.
Donations in Col. Luebbert’s memory may be made to the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy or the Save the Redwoods League.
Arrangements are by the Ricker Funeral Home & Crematory in Lebanon. Col. Luebbert will be buried at the USMA Cemetery at West Point at a later date.
Richard (Rich) Glenn Lurvey
....show of Enfield, New Hampshire, died Sunday, March 26, 2017 from injuries he sustained in a snowmobile accident. He was 47.
Rich was born to Ross W. & Sandra L. (Cookman) Lurvey in Claremont, New Hampshire on July 11, 1969. He grew up in Enfield and graduated from Mascoma High School in 1987. Upon graduating, he worked for several years as a Technical Support Specialist at Hypertherm. In 1996, he began working as a Computer Support Engineer at Sun Microsystems, first in Massachusetts and later in Colorado. In 2005, he was hired as a Senior Technical Support Engineer at Veritas Corporation (subsequently acquired by Symantec) in Newton, Massachusetts, and was employed there for over eleven years.
Rich is survived by his life partner Christopher Paul Roberts, his Mother Sandy Benjamin and her husband Jim, his sister Jennifer Lurvey Dole, his five children Michael Hutchins, Kristen Bourgault, Rachel Lurvey, Jonathan Lurvey, and Rebekah Lurvey, his eight grandchildren Jared, Christopher, Ryan, Bryan, Isabella, Jayden, Sophia, and Caleb, his former spouse Sharon Angel, two nieces Abigail Dole and Desirae Lurvey, aunts, uncles, and cousins, and his two beloved cats Ebony and Obie. He was predeceased by his father, maternal and paternal grandparents, and his sister Pamela Lurvey.
Rich was an amazing individual with many astounding talents and abilities. His greatest passion was rap music, and he was known to his numerous fans and followers as Masta Switch (his rap name). He had a truly genuine gift for writing rap lyrics, and he co-produced an album with his rap partner MC Holy Ghost (Paul Breeden) in 2008. While not (yet) as famous as his idol Eminem, he was every bit as brilliant a rap artist, if not more so, although Rich never would have believed or said that about himself.
Rich also had outstanding technical and problem-solving skills. On his own initiative and with entirely self-taught knowledge, he coded and designed software programs that significantly increased productivity while he was employed at Hypertherm and Veritas. Entirely on his own, Rich also learned how to use various computer operating systems including UNIX and LINUX, enabling him to become one of the top technical support engineers at Veritas.
Rich loved nature, and among his favorite activities was to ride dirt bikes and four wheelers on the many trails around his Mother’s home (which he always considered his true home) on Methodist Hill. He had many varied interests, from science, technology, animals, religion, and philosophy to tennis, hackeysack, drawing, and break dancing. He was an outstanding cook, and an absolute master at video games.
Most of all, Rich enjoyed being with the people he loved. He had a gigantic, humble, generous, kind, and gentle heart, and always did his best to make his family and friends and even acquaintances and strangers happy. Rich was only happy when the people he loved were happy.

A bugler in her high school band, Marilyn was honored to play taps at the funerals of hometown soldiers lost during World War II. Her other skills and hobbies included baking, cooking, sewing, knitting, early American decorating, and her very favorite, quilting. In recent years, though, nothing gave her more joy than watching her nine great-grandchildren laugh and learn and thrive.

Lebanon: Betty Jean "BJ" Michelsen
....show died on Saturday December 16, 2017 – peacefully and easily in the Green Street home that she loved with the care and support of family; good friends - both old and new; neighbors; members of her close-knit support group the “Hot Tub Chicks”; fellow UV United Unitarian Universalist Church members; and a team of compassionate, professional caregivers who traveled along in BJ’s journey. BJ was diagnosed with lung cancer two and a half years ago. She was a trooper and an eternal optimist as she challenged the illness.
Born in Madison, WI on April 3, 1941 to Inge (Hovland) and Barney Michelsen, BJ was named by her older sister Helen, who decided that having a baby sister was better than getting the pony she had longed for because: “Sisters are forever.” They moved to Oak Park, Illinois. BJ’s father died when she was seven; and her mother supported the girls as a nurse. The family returned to Stoughton, WI and into the arms of her large extended Norwegian farm family. Betty’s naturally outgoing, perennially happy personality, thrived and grew. She learned Norwegian, was baptized as a Lutheran, and excelled in her academic studies. All her life BJ was frequently seen with a book in her hand. She was an avid reader of historical novels, and a guru of crossword puzzles. She was president of the Philomathia Society her senior year in high school. That same year, her mother died of a heart condition. BJ’s plans to continue her education at the U. of Wisconsin faltered; but friends encouraged her insisting that she go. From there she moved to NYC with her roommate and lifelong friend, Jan. There she became a founding member of the NY Radical Feminists, and a political organizer. She went on the road as a speaker for the group, traveling around the country, even to Hanover, where she spoke to the first incoming class of women at Dartmouth College. Her efforts and commitment contributed to the development of the Brooklyn Chapter of the National Congress of Neighborhood Women.
BJ loved her work as an administrative assistant at Dartmouth. She developed many life-long relationships and took great pride in her work. She retired in 2005. In her earliest days in the Upper Valley, she met Normajane Wittner, DMD, her life partner for the next 30 years, and one of the first women dentists in NH. Their magical relationship brought great joy to one another and to those who were touched by their openness, and exuberance. Their combination of sincere optimism, honest friendship and remarkable presence nourished many people, in many different ways. With an amazing and diverse group of friends in the Upper Valley, they forged a culture and a community of solidarity, trust and fun. Normajane and BJ, shared in the creation and marketing of Crack Care, a salve which has healed many skin ailments. Their product continues today. They volunteered for years in the offices at DHMC. They were active members of the UV United Unitarian Church for many years, and at one point, the two of them were the whole of the welcoming committee for new members, a job they enjoyed immensely. In her retirement, BJ joined a water aerobics class at the CCBA. “The Hot Tub Chicks” is a friendship group that grew beyond the class and “became a support group for every woman… BJ and Normie “felt the love”.
BJ is survived by her sister Helen Hurley and her son and his family of Oregon; Normajane’s daughter Judi Rogers and husband Tom, their children Molly Ebitson (Michael), Brandon Rogers (Lauren), her step-son Stefan Wittner, DMD (Maggie) and their children Terry Tenzing, Roger Wittner, Dan Wittner (Katchen), and Stefanie Wittner, along with 12 great grandchildren; and Normajane’s dear cousin Joanne Arnold.
We offer thanks to so many: especially to Carmen, the aide who stayed with her continuously and lovingly for her last few days; to Nancy the Bayada nurse who came for several hours everyday to tweak medications and offer emotional support; to Barbara Sweet, who helped us transition BJ home and managed the compassionate home care team of Jaimie and the other aides, who were invaluable to the continuity of care. Thanks too to her earlier care team in DHMC Oncology: Dr. Dragnev, Melissa, Chelsea, Jess, Tina and all the many others, who BJ knew and loved as very special people in her life. Invaluable and loved too were the loyal, caring neighbors; Rev. Patience Stoddard and the entire UU church community; the old friends - especially dear Kit; her landlord Bob; and the team of Judi, Lorna and Doreen, who helped her steer her course during her final months. So many people added to the richness of BJ’s life that it is impossible to list them all. It took the village. “Blessed be!”
A memorial celebration for BJ will be held on Saturday January 20 at 1 PM at the UV United Unitarian Church on Rte. 5 South in Norwich, VT. Al are invited to bring memories and stories to share. Donations in her memory may be given to the church. Mailing address: UUUV, PO Box 1110, Norwich, Vermont 05055.

Vincent Evans Starzinger
....show , a Dartmouth College government professor who shaped the careers of over a generation of graduates by inviting them to think critically, died on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at Wheelock Terrace, Hanover, NH. He was age 88.
Nicknamed “The Zinger” by students and colleagues, Starzinger retired in 1994, after 34 years at Dartmouth, but his influence extended far beyond that time.
In 2008, government professor Richard F. Winters wrote in the Valley News: “The legendary Zinger....His monumental reputation...derived from his brilliance in challenging students to think and in employing the broad base of scholarship. He directed his intellectual vitality at a range of heterogeneous students, not just government majors. It is that kind of mind, operating with that kind of passion, that Dartmouth should be seeking and rewarding.”
Starzinger credited his ability for writing concisely and powerfully to spending two years in the Army press corps, stationed in Kansas City, KS. Starzinger also credits these years for giving him the time to reconsider his career, deciding to return to school for a PhD rather than become a lawyer.
Starzinger’s book Middlingness was published in 1965 long before it became popular to speak to a politics of the center. A revised edition, The Politics of the Center, was released in 1991. Most recently, social media posts are referencing the book as accurately describing the current political landscape with populists dominating the political debate from the right and the left, and the consequences for those caught at the center.
Starzinger noted in his book that the politics of moderation “is least realistic where it is most relevant, and most realistic where it is least relevant.” In societies torn by extreme political divisions, “the center will very likely be pulverized from both sides and driven to futile negativism. On the other hand, commitment to the center is likely to be a fairly realistic enterprise where the political left and right both stand within the same value consensus.”
“In a work of remarkable concision and argumentative vigor,” wrote Stephen J Tonsor (1924-2014), professor of history at the University of Michigan. “Starzinger moves from past political reality and theory to enduring concerns and contemporary debate. The thirty years of French and English history he traces were dominated by a quest for a middle way.
Starzinger not only uses the historiographical evidence to great effect, but at a time when Trollope’s novels had not yet been popularized by TV he employs the evidence of French and English novels impressively and to great historical purpose.”
Starzinger attended Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa and graduated summa cum laude from Harvard in 1950 in a class that included Henry Kissinger and James Schlesinger. Starzinger was awarded a Frederick Sheldon Fellowship to support research, study and travel abroad for one year. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1954 and received his PhD in political philosophy from Harvard in 1959.
Starzinger climbed over 200 high peaks in the United States, Canada, New Zealand and the European Alps (including Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn). He specialized in the Upper Engadine, spending almost every summer there. Starzinger bought a second-hand single shell whose Greek name meant “came from no one” and rowed 58,606 miles on the Connecticut River from 1960-2007.
Starzinger met his future wife, Mildred Hippee Hill, in 6th grade at a dance class in their hometown of Des Moines, Iowa. They married in 1953. For 53 years they lived on Elm Street in Norwich, VT before moving in 2013 to Wheelock Terrace, Hanover, NH.
Starzinger is survived by his sister, Harriet Locke Macomber of Des Moines, Iowa; two children, Evans Starzinger of Alexandria, VA and Page Hill Starzinger of NYC; and his wife, Mildred Hill Starzinger, of Wheelock Terrace, Hanover, NH.

Nearly every year, Marcia and Richard vacationed with family in Cape Cod, where Richard could fish and Marcia could spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren as they scoured the seashores for sea glass, watched the sunsets, and chatted happily around family meals—and always taking a moment to find the nearest Christmas Tree Shoppe with a future craft project or gift in mind.
Above all, Marcia loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren and was always so glad to see them. Even with changes brought by time and distance, Marcia’s thoughts were never far from Curtis, Miranda, Nicki, Brittney, Catelynn, Katrina, Desiree, Theodore, Daisy, Maggie, Nandy, Naila, and Jonathan, her grandchildren, and Marques, Spencer, and Scarlett, her great grandchildren.
