Enfield, N.H. – Evelyn J. Crate
....show , wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend passed away on Thursday, September 7 at her home on Sargent Street, surrounded by her family.
Evelyn was born on July 19, 1924, the third child of Mabel Gertrude Bennett and Elmer Martin Sanford. She grew up in Randolph, Vermont with her siblings, Elmer George Sanford and Elizabeth “Libby” Sanford Chamberlain, all who predeceased her.
Evelyn attended schools in Randolph. Her favorite class was math and her favorite sports were swimming, figure skating, and skiing. After graduating from high school, Evelyn worked for Vermont Telephone Company in Fairlee and Hartford. She also lived in Boston and worked for Raytheon. She moved back to Randolph and later met and married Donald A. Crate of Lebanon, New Hampshire. They were married for 67 years at the time of Donald’s death in 2013. They were an inseparable couple and business partners who loved their ever-growing family.
After their marriage, the couple purchased the Mascoma Hotel (formerly the Webster House) on Main Street in Enfield. The two of them ran the hotel and a small grocery store while they began their family, which eventually grew to eight children. Six of their children still reside in Enfield. Many of their children followed in their parent’s footsteps in business and local community service.
Evelyn also supported her husband while he was Enfield’s volunteer Fire Chief for nearly 50 years. One of her main roles was to man the siren and answer phone calls from their home during each fire, typically happening in the middle of the night. Many in her family felt she was one of the first women on the Enfield Fire Department. For several years, she assisted the Supervisors of the Check List in Enfield.
While running the hotel and grocery store in Enfield, she and her husband started Don Crate General Trucking and later Don Crate & Sons Trucking and Excavating. Up until his passing, Evelyn worked with her husband running the trucking company. After his death, she continued to work with their sons Donald and David and grandsons Donald and Duane. Evelyn also managed several rental properties and continued to work in her office up until this past June when she became seriously ill.
In the 80’s and 90’s, Evelyn and Don spent winters in Zephyrhills, Florida, never completely retiring from their businesses in New Hampshire.
Evelyn was a strong woman. During the last three years of her life, she took over the business after her husband’s death, healed and rebounded from a compound fractured ankle, and battled cancer. Evelyn lived her life as a modern woman changing with the times. She stayed up on all the daily, local and regional news. Evelyn had her own Facebook page and spent time on her iPad searching Google for answers to questions, looking for old friends, and Skyping grandchildren in North Carolina.
Her family celebrates her long life and her ability to enjoy the time she was living in.
Evelyn was a true matriarch and her legacy was her family. She leaves behind eight children: Donna Wheeler (Phillip) of Sharon, Vermont, Donald J. Crate, Sr. (Peggy), Richard A. A quietly passionate man of great integrity and humility, Allan was steadfast in his devotion to his family, community and his many business ventures.
Allan’s pride was his family, their interests and education. The slightest interest expressed was met with enthusiastic conversation, research and support. He reveled in his family's successes and supported them in their challenges. Cheering them on in sports, chasing them down a snowy mountain or sending books, articles or just making a call to check in. He was always enthusiastically present for his family.

After 20 years with J&J, he moved to the Boston area to take subsequent senior operating positions at two biotech companies. The towns of Canaan and Orange felt part of their foundation give way on the evening of July 18, when one of their strongest community pillars shifted and collapsed near the Canaan town common, just as residents were gathering for a weekly summer concert.
Nathan H. “Nate” Harpootlian
....show died as he’d lived so much of his life: in the heart of a small town, engaged, active, showing his support, surrounded by neighbors and friends who personally knew how much difference one person can make in the daily life of a community. The loss will be felt for a long time. He was 89.
He was born in Camden, New Jersey, on September 16, 1927, to an Armenian-immigrant tailor and his Vermont bride, the late Harry and Florence Rosetta (Smith) Harpootlian, the one boy in a family of girls. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, rising to the rank of staff sergeant in the Medical Supply Department, and later served in the Air Force reserves.
In March 1948, he married Dorothy Woodbury of Orange, New Hampshire, and moved onto her family’s ancestral land at 32 Eastman Road in Orange, where the two of them would remain married until Dot’s death in 2003, and where Nate would continue living as a widower.
His 40-year career as a conductor on the Boston & Maine Railroad spanned the dying days of railroading’s steam era and the emerging dominance of diesel. His work, based out of White River Jct., led to a lifelong interest in trains and railroad history. He was an avid collector of railroad literature and memorabilia; a collector of old bottles and stamps; a supporter of the Dartmouth hockey teams; and a loyal though misguided fan of the New York Yankees.
Loyalty and service were long bright threads he wove into the fabric of his community. He served as an officer and a dues-paying member of the Local 73 of the United Transportation Union for 70 years. When he was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award from the Canaan Lions Club in 2000, he had served as president, vice-president, director, had headed countless committees, and hadn’t missed a single meeting in 16 years. He was an active brother in the Mascoma Valley Masonic Association, from which he earned his 50-year medal in 2007. He was a former master and ever-present volunteer in American Legion Post 55. He was active in the Canaan United Methodist Church, the local Boy Scout troop, the Mascoma Area Senior Center, and on the Grafton County Senior Citizens Council. He delivered meals on wheels. He was a Notary Public. In Orange he served on a number of town committees and was in the selectmen’s hot seat during the contentious battle over wind mills on Mount Cardigan.
He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, and two sisters, Esther DeAngelis and Margaret “Peg” Morgan, both of Vermont. He leaves a son, Gregory, of White River Jct.; a grandson, Wade Harpootlian, and a great-granddaughter, Ripley Violet Harpootlian, both of Los Angeles, California; a former daughter-in-law, Doreen Slavin, and her husband Jim Slavin; two step-grandchildren, Ashley Curtis and Andrew Slavin; several nephews and nieces; and three sisters: Alice Heath of Laconia, N.H., Helen Wight of Little River, S.C., and Florence Ireland of Palm City, Florida. He leaves a large number of dear friends, fraternal brothers, fellow veterans, fellow volunteers, fellow parishioners, and fellow citizens who will miss his loyalty and his service, his sense of humor and his heart.
And with the Yankees looking up at the Red Sox in the American League East.
Friends and well-wishers may call on Thursday, July 27, between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Lebanon Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 29, at 10 a.m. at the Canaan United Methodist Church, with a reception to follow. She received an award from the Diocese of Manchester for her contribution in youth activities. She also served on the Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees and was president of the Lebanon Young Mothers Club.
Her family was the love of Elaine’s life. One of her greatest joys was to travel throughout Vermont and New Hampshire attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, theater performances and musical recitals. She was always ready with a blanket, an extra jacket and a folding chair in the car.
She was passionate about all sports from an early age, especially skiing and golf. Every Sunday her father would take her skiing at Mt. Tom or skating on Occom Pond. Thomas J. Keane
....show passed away peacefully on July 4, 2017, one month after the passing of his beloved wife of 68 years, Elaine E. Keane. Tom was born in Windsor, Vt. on August 1, 1927, the son of Thomas F. Keane and Ethel F. Keane.
Tom graduated from West Lebanon High School where he captained several sports teams. Following his honorable discharge from the United States Coast Guard in1946, Tom attended Bryant and Stratton business school in Boston. Tom and Elaine were high school sweethearts, as evidenced by Elaine’s junior prom invitation and the dance card which she saved where “Tommy” was lucky to have had both the first and last dance.
In 1949, Tom and Elaine opened Tom’s Toggery, later to be know as Tommy Keane Sports. Their store was the center of activity in downtown Lebanon where local politicians, city officials, coaches and customers gathered daily to shop and catch up on the local news. When the great fire of 1964 destroyed most of the commercial area of downtown Lebanon, it was Tom and Elaine that took the first steps of rebuilding the City they loved, by constructing a new store which opened in 1965.
Virtually every local, state and national politician made Tom and Elaine’s store a must stop on their campaigns. Tom lived by the motto that "the customer is always right" and instilled those virtues in his family and employees. He mentored hundreds of employees, many of whom went on to start their own businesses or launch successful careers. He was a generous and kind man who contributed greatly to the Lebanon community, especially to local sports and youth activities. He was instrumental in the growth of the Carter Community Building where he was chairman of the Board of Trustees. He also sat on the board of numerous other organizations, including the Lebanon Outing Club where he served as its President. He was proud to bring the Boston Celtics to town for a local fundraiser and to have sold the New England Patriots their football equipment when they were know as the Boston Patriots. Tommy Keane Sports was a major provider of athletic equipment to high schools and colleges throughout New England and Tom branded his own hockey stick, known as the “Keane” stick, which was used by teams such as UNH, Dartmouth, Yale and many more.
Tom was a superb athlete and a fierce competitor. He was a multiple winner of the club championships at Hanover Country Club, Carter Country Club and Woodstock Country Club. He was a regular on the New England amateur golf circuit, traveling to tournaments and usually stopping on the way home at the closest race track, where he “never lost”.
However, he reserved his greatest love for his wife Elaine, his three children, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. For 68 years, he and Elaine shared a remarkable life together. They were deeply involved in their community, church and schools. Their contributions to their family and the Lebanon community will continue to be remembered for years to come.
When Elaine passed by his side on June 4, 2017, he knew it was time to go be with her.
He is survived by his brother Peter Keane and his sister Lucille Canavan. He was predeceased by his sisters Louise Mock and Gloria Atchinson and his brother Robert Keane. He is survived by his three children, Thomas M. Keane and his wife Mary Jane of Rye, N.H., Kathryn K. Sehnal and husband Raymond of Pomfret, VT and James C. Keane and his wife Deborah of West Lebanon, N.H.; his grandchildren Jonathan Keane, Matthew Keane, Erin Sehnal, Meghan Sehnal Duff, Kevin Keane, Thomas Keane, Jennifer Keane and Christopher Keane; and seven great grandchildren.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Valley Terrace and Bayada Hospice for their tremendous support.
A memorial mass will be celebrated for the lives of Tom and Elaine on Monday, July 31, 2107 at Sacred Heard Church at 11:00 AM followed by a celebration at Ava Gallery and Art Center.
Donations in his memory may be sent to the Pat Walsh Sneaker Fund, c/o Jim Vanier, Carter Community Building, PO Box 386, Lebanon, NH 03766 or the Lebanon Outing Club c/o Cory Grant PO Box 295, Lebanon, N.H. 03766.
