Roland Clifford Buteau
....show of Lancaster NH passed away November 6, 2017, 22 years and a day after losing his wife and the love of his life, Mary Catherine (Monahan) Buteau, on November 5, 1995.
Roland was born November 30, 1920 in Marshfield VT. He was the son of Joseph and Roseanna (LaRocque) Buteau. Roland and his nine siblings were raised in homes across the North Country, his family following lumbering work provided in logging camps throughout the Great North Woods. At the age of thirteen, Roland began working for his father in lumber camps owned by the Brown Company. Family legend has it that he and his brother Adolph could fell a tree with their two-man buck saw faster than a chainsaw salesman could do with his modern logging tool. He worked as a lumberjack until World War II broke out, at which time he enlisted in the army and was inducted into the 100th Division, 398th Infantry Regiment on December 7, 1942. Roland served as Heavy Machine Gunner and Expert Rifleman fighting in various battles and campaigns across Western Europe. He was honorably discharged on February 2, 1946 at the rank of Technical Sergeant, and during his service he was awarded several honors, including a Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and Victory Medal.
When Roland arrived home in Northern New Hampshire, he returned to the woods with his father and brothers, logging the land with horses and hand tools. In 1948 Roland fell in love with Mary Catherine Monahan, and they married on September 20, 1948. They rented an apartment in a home owned by Mary’s parents on Kilkenny Street in Lancaster, and later purchased the property as a homestead in which to raise their family. They welcomed first Theresa, then Patrick, Andrew, Philip and finally Marie into their hearts and home. Roland lived in the home until his health declined in 2013. He then lived first with his son Andy and then his son Pat before moving into The Morrison Nursing Home earlier this year.
In 1951, Roland began working for Beaton & Sons Plumbing, and served many families in Lancaster and the surrounding towns as a plumber until his retirement in 1985. He also manned the pumps at Monahan’s Gulf Station every evening until it closed in the mid-1980s so that his brother-in-law, Dick Monahan, could have dinner at home with his family. Many will remember Roland, Dick and lots of other local gentlemen spending time on the benches in front of the station sharing stories and celebrating community.
Roland was known for his strong faith, integrity and love of family. He was a communicant of All Saints’ Catholic Church and was quick to lend a hand to help his neighbors. Roland was a very resourceful, creative man, who found ways to repurpose everyday items into objects of usefulness for his family. For example, decades ahead of industrial development of adaptive devices, Roland constructed walking tools from galvanized pipe for his daughter, Theresa, who had difficulty walking as a result of her cerebral palsy. He taught his children and grandchildren the value of an honest day’s work and led by example as an exceptional husband, father and friend.
Roland loved sports, spending many summer evenings on the front porch of his sister’s home watching ball games at the Colonel Town fields. He was a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots, and enjoyed following NASCAR races. He liked to spend his free time taking long walks around the neighborhood, and watching old movies – especially anything starring John Wayne, a movie star that he resembled. He was also an avid reader, with a preference for western novels like those written by Louis L’Amour. For many years, he spent time each Wednesday at the Weeks Memorial Library selecting books to read through the week, and when his health declined he even received periodic visits from the librarian who kept him supplied with fresh reading material.
Roland was predeceased by his wife, Mary Catherine (Monahan) Buteau, both of their daughters, Theresa Anne Buteau and Marie Ellen (Buteau) Ricker and daughter-in-law Dorothy McCarthy. He was also predeceased by his siblings Clara Trombley, Roseanna Cloutier, Arthur Buteau, Joseph Buteau, Pauline Delisle, Adolph Buteau, Josephine Pelchat and Napoleon (Paul) Buteau.
Roland is survived by his three sons, Patrick Buteau of Burlington VT, Andy and wife Sue Buteau of Lancaster and Philip and wife Lorri Buteau of Newbury NH, and his sister Victoria (Buteau) Beaton of Lancaster. On May 21, 2017 we lost the most amazing and wonderful father, friend and
teacher. There was nothing this man wouldn't do for family or friends. He would
have been 100 in November. He passed away at St Johnsbury Health and Rehab
Center after fighting years with Alzheimer’s.
Maurice was born in Tingwick, Quebec, Canada November 13, 1917 to Archille
and Rose Emma Frechette, he was one of 8 children.
On June 26, 1926 in Norton Mills, Vermont he became a United States Citizen
along with his parents, brothers and sisters. As a young boy he helped his father
run their farm on the French Road in Dalton, New Hampshire. When he was older
he started work for the Gilman Paper Company and also still worked on the farm
and helped his brother Omar in his garage.
In February 5, 1941 he joined the US Army, Anti-Tank Company 172 Infantry, 43rd
Division. He left for the Pacific in October 6, 1942 to fight the Japanese on
Guadalcanal, Rendover, New Georgia Group and Munda, New Guinea, the
Philippines, Leyte Luzan and Manila. While in the Philippines he had the
privilege to drive John F Kennedy around. He told us that Kennedy hardly ever
wore a shirt while there. At the time of course he really did not who Kennedy was
until he ran for President.
As a survivor of the USS Coolidge, it was his duty to make sure that all the crew
was off the ship when it hit bombs in the pacific and he got off himself not long
before the ship sunk. They all swam to the nearest island and upon reaching the
island they all had to get their clothes of because of all the oil in the water from
the USS Coolidge. Once on the island they had to find food and also make friends
with the natives of the island until they could be rescued.
On October 10 1945, he was Honorable Discharged in Fort Devens, MA, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, the American Defense Service Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Service Star. On his return he went back to work for the Gilman Paper Company. At that time his wife
to be was working at the Gilman Post Office as a clerk for her mother Helen Boyle.
On December 30, 1945 he married his longtime sweetheart Rita Boyle and started
their life together in Gilman. They had three children, Sharon, Dennis and Gary.
Maurice continued to work at the paper company. He also got a pilot’s license in
1947. He owned a small piper cub airplane and became a member of the Civil
Air Patrol, flying all over New England for Aero-New England Associates. He kept
his plane at the Whitefield Airport, where his cousin William Moran, also kept his
plane. At times he kept the plane in his garage, while he would work on it and
then take it back to the airport. Whenever we as a family would go anywhere the
airport was one of the first places he would take us. Many times as kids he would
take us to North Conway, New Hampshire, where there as an airport right on the
main road. It’s where Settlers Green is now.
In 1957 he quit working for the paper company and applied for clerks job at the
Gilman Post Office because my grandmother retired and my mother was given
the Postmasters job and was awarded the job. In June 1972 my mother retired
and dad got the Postmasters Job in September. While being Postmaster he
attended many conventions and would approach the Postmaster General and tell
him that Gilman needed a new Post Office. So soon after dad retired in 1980 Gilman got a new Post Office.
He was the Boy Scout Master for 14 years, teaching the boys how to setup tents,
survive if ever alone in the wood and how to mark trails so they could always find
their way back from a hike.
He was active in St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, helping with bazaars and any
events. He became a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus and a
member of the American Legion, when on any holidays would march in parades
around Gilman, Lunenburg and East Concord and wherever else they were asked to participate.
He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and snowmobiling, where he also was
member of the Snowmobile Club, blazing trails and scraping them because he had
the heaviest machine to do so. When he was done he donated the machine to the
club. When his kids were involved in school sports and all activities he was always
there if possible. He and Rita loved to play cards on weekends with friends and family.
During the summer he enjoyed grilling and having his nieces and nephews come
for a picnic on his patio, where they would bring all the food and visit for a few
hours and return home. Some would come from California, Maine and Missouri just to visit Dad.
He is survived by his children, Sharon, Dennis and Gary and one sister Collette Tessier 93, of New Hampshire. He leaves four grandchildren, Lyndsay, Alison, Adam and Sarah and two great grandsons Andrew & Jonathan. He was pre-deceased by his wife Rita who died in 1995 and brothers Felix, Orad, Omar and Gerard, three sisters, Yvonne, Ora and Simone and many nieces and nephews.

WHITEFIELD Mary Lorraine (Robinson)Young
....show , 93, of Whitefield, passed away at The Morrison Nursing Home on April 26, 2017 after a period of deteriorating health.
Born in Lancaster, New Hampshire, Mary graduated from Lancaster Academy in 1943 and attended the University of New Hampshire where she graduated in 1946 with a BS in Business. Upon graduation, Mary began her life-long passion in education at Twin Mountain High School.
Soon after in 1947, she married her high school sweetheart Clayton J. Young. They moved into their home in Twin Mountain where she resided until 1991.
Mary took a short break in service to care for her two young children, then continued her career at Twin Mountain High School serving as a teacher in the Commercial Business Department and then as the school’s Teacher/Principal until 1962, when the school was consolidated into Whitefield High School. Soon after her assignment to Whitefield High School, several regional towns cooperated in the founding of the White Mountain Regional High School. Mary was appointed as the head of the Business Department where she taught for 16 years before her retirement in 1991.
During her 39 years in education, Mary received numerous awards and recognitions from organizations such as: Delta Kappa Gamma - a member for 46 years (ceremonial 45-year pinning summer 2016), Beta Alpha State Treasurer from 1979 to 1993 and an active chapter member, a member of the Retired Teachers Association, NH Educational Association and Lancaster Business & Professional Woman’s Club.
Beyond her passion for education, she was committed to her community. She worked with others to attain grants for the establishment of the Twin Mountain Lake for family recreation. With her leadership and that of others, they organized “family nights” for the residents of Twin Mountain. Mary served the town as the Deputy Town Clerk and Treasurer and the Secretary for Twin Mountain Chamber of Commerce for 24 years.
Mary always said "you have to be a participant rather than a spectator" and lived that motto to the fullest, being involved with the Littleton Ladies VFW Auxiliary and Littleton Senior Center. Later Mary became an integral part of the Riverglen House where she resided for almost 11 years. She served on the Welcoming Committee, Activities Committee and was the liaison to the Littleton Public Library for the residents.
Although the many awards and commendations she received over her lifetime were very important to Mary, none were more important than the personal and heartfelt recognition of thanks and appreciation she received from her many generations of students over her years of teaching. Her students were her life’s work and nothing made her prouder than seeing them attain their potential. For many of them, she was their teacher; for some she was their mentor; but for many others, she was, and will always be Mother Young. Many of her students were with her up until the end giving her hugs and saying their good-byes. It is why she chose to do what she did with her life.
Mary was predeceased by parents William and Vera (Morton) Robinson, husband Clayton, brother William Robinson, sister Sally Ramsey, and Son-in-law William Kittridge and Lucien “Lucky” Morneau a long-time friend.
Survived by her son, John R. Young and his wife, Linda, of Concord, NH; her daughter, Marcia (Young) Kittridge of Littleton, NH, and her Granddaughter, Amy Kittridge of Winooski, VT and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's memory may be made to WMRHS Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, Attn: Kelly Renaud, PO Box 338 Whitefield, NH 03598.
Thank you to staff of the Morrison Nursing Home for the care the last two and a half years. Words cannot describe the care, support and love Mary received from all of you during her time with you. This passion for your work is why you do what you do. Every day you are positively impacting people’s lives in very difficult times and making a difference. Mother Young would approve.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held at the All Saints Catholic Church, 163 Main Street, Lancaster, New Hampshire, May 17, 2017 at 11:00 AM. Graveside service will be private at the convenience of the family.

This Shining Moment in the Now by David Budbill
When I work outdoors all day, every day, as I do now, in the fall,
getting ready for winter, tearing up the garden, digging potatoes,
gathering the squash, cutting firewood, making kindling, repairing
bridges over the brook, clearing trails in the woods, doing the last of
the fall mowing, pruning apple trees, taking down the screens,
putting up the storm windows, banking the house—all these things,
as preparation for the coming cold...
When I am every day all day all body and no mind, when I am
physically, wholly and completely, in this world with the birds,
the deer, the sky, the wind, the trees...
When day after day I think of nothing but what the next chore is,
when I go from clearing woods roads, to sharpening a chain saw,
to changing the oil in a mower, to stacking wood, when I am
all body and no mind...
When I am only here and now and nowhere else—then, and only
then, do I see the crippling power of mind...

In the pursuing years from 1983 to 2003 she along with her sister Aurora retired in Littleton enjoying their time with her great-grandnephew Nathan Lloyd and great-grandniece Nicole Lloyd Whipple as well as helping and caring for anyone in need.

They made new friends there and Evelyn continued her golfing on Florida golf courses. She continued her sense of community by volunteering at the Cape Coral Hospital and joining the Red Hat Society. She spent many hours working on her quilts, doing hand-work on many of them. She loved her life in Florida but was always ready to return to Forest Lake to spend summers with her family.
Evelyn was predeceased by her parents and all her siblings: Eleanor, Eva, Ethel, Ellen, Clyde, and Clarence. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law Herbert Hennessey, Jr. and her two sisters-in-law Rita Grimard Altamuro and Theresa Grimard Stevens who remained close to her over the years.
Evelyn is survived by her her husband Robert of Dalton; daughters Jean Bergin and husband Robert, and Joanne Hennessey; her grandchildren Derek Hennessey, Beth Hennessey Reynolds and husband Robert, Jameson Bergin and wife Ruthie, and Jonathan Bergin and wife Kate. She especially loved visits from her great grandchildren; all 8 of them!! During her declining years a visit and a hug from any of them made her smile. She was “Nanny” to all of them and will remain a very special part of their early childhood years. Her family also includes a niece, Pauline Belanger Chapman and a nephew, Raymond Belanger and his family.
The family is most thankful to Dr. Fernandez, Dr. Adams, Pat Steady, and the other Northwoods Hospice employees. A heartfelt thank you to the caregivers who also became special friends to Evelyn and her family.
There will be a funeral mass on Saturday, January 14 at St. Matthew Church in Whitefield at 11:00 AM. Evelyn was married in this church and has been a member ever since her marriage in 1947. A reception will follow at the Inn at Whitefield where friends and family can gather to celebrate Evelyn’s life.
Evelyn will be greatly missed, especially by her family. She will, however, never be forgotten!
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Gate of Heaven Parish.
