LITTLETON - Harlan E. Corey
....show
, 73, passed away peacefully at home on Mount Eustis Rd, with loved ones at his side on Wednesday April 20th 2016. Harlan was born on July 26, 1942 in Littleton NH to Errington Harlan and Glenna Ruth Corey. For most of Harlan’s life he was self-employed as a custom cabinet maker, carpenter, handyman and Jack of all trades. Working for local businesses such as; The Littleton Motel, Jax Jr. Theater, and building Bretzfelder Park's building beautiful wooden foot bridges. He was also the key designer and head contractor in the construction of a magnificent million dollar home in Sugar Hill.
Harlan had been the caregiver for his family, helping when his mother needed him after breaking her ankle, when his brother was in a bad auto accident and in a body cast, when his youngest brother struggled with mental illness, numerous times when his niece came home to live with him and especially when Miss Hetty’s guardian angel led her to Harlan from 1993-2009.
Harlan’s life work, however, was being a good Samaritan. He helped someone every day. Some days he helped everyone he came in contact with. Family, friends, acquaintances, and strangers were frequently rescued with a big smile and a hearty laugh. No matter how dire the situation, he would always find the humor in it, a way to fix it, or several ways to improvise, he always just rolled with it, with good humor and determination. It was this attitude, this tool, which Harlan had cultivated, that he used during his courageous three year battle with cancer. Despite the prognosis, Harlan continued to smile, laugh, and joke right up until his final day.
Harlan is survived by his sister June Hall, her three children and their families, his youngest brother, Martin Corey and his younger brother Wayne Corey, his two daughters, and their families.
His niece Becky lived with Harlan for the past 10 years, enjoying his attitude, laughter and sense of humor in the good times, hard times and took care of him during the bad times, as he struggled with his illness.
Our friend, guardian Angel, Mr. fix it, snow eliminator, go-to guy, our friend and our family has completed his job here, and will be missed deeply daily.
The family would like to apologize for the delay in Harlan’s obituary, but for those of you that know Becky and knew Harlan, you should not be too surprised..
A Celebration of Life will be held in July.

M. Ross McLeod (Uncle Ross)
....show
93 of Groton, VT, died July 1, 2016 after a short period of failing health. He was born January 16, 1923 in Springhill, Nova Scotia, a son of Malcolm and Ethel (Penny) McLeod. Ross grew up with his brothers Kenneth and Fred, in Medford MA., and graduated from Cambridge High and Latin in 1941. Ross met the love of his life Evelyn Pynn at a church youth group meeting and knew as soon as he saw her, she was the girl he was going to marry. World War II intervened and Ross enlisted in the Army Air Corps in May 1942. He was assigned to the 40th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron and proudly served in the China India Burma Theater. Ross had many stories to tell, and one of the family’s favorites was of trading his rationed cigarettes for chocolate each time the Red Cross packages arrived. Also thanks to the Red Cross, Ross was able to meet up with his brother Fred who was in the Navy and the two of them met up in Calcutta, India with a 3-pass to do some sightseeing.
During training at Fort Ethan Allen outside Burlington VT, Ross met Andy Smith of Groton, VT, who would become a lifelong friend. It was during this stint that Ross fell in love with the Green Mountain State and asked Andy to keep an eye out for property that might become available.
Ross was honorably discharged from the Army in 1945, and he finally got to marry the love of his life Evelyn Pynn on August 30, 1946 at Grace United Methodist Church in Cambridge MA. November 1947 their daughter Joyce Victoria was born. Early on they knew Joyce would need special care, and so they selflessly devoted their lives to always putting her needs before their own. Using his G.I. Bill Ross went to night school at Boston University and earned a degree in Marketing. He said his plan was to be a Marketing Executive in New York City, but that didn’t work out, so his first job was in an Boston area appliance store.
In the 1950’s his friend Andy called to let him know there was a house for sale in Topsham Vermont, just a few miles from Andy’s house in Groton. Ross bought this house as a second home and spent as much time as possible there. All his nieces and nephews have very fond memories of the time spent on summer vacations, jumping in hay barns, playing on the rope swings, and climbing the foothills that surrounded the property.
In 1966 Ross moved to Vermont for good, after being hired as Account Executive at St. Johnsbury Trucking where he worked until his retirement in 1985. Ross took an early retirement, so he could spend more with Joyce and Evelyn.
Ross was very active in the Boy Scouts, being a leader for many years. He and the troop built Fort McLeod on Lake Groton that still stands today. Their theme song was “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head”, because every time they camped out it would rain. Ross was an active member of the Groton United Methodist Church serving as church treasurer for many years, Lay Speaker, and Jr.High Youth Group Leader. He and Evelyn hosted the Easter sunrise service always ready with hot cocoa for those cold, early morning worship services. Ross edited the church newsletter for many years before computers, meticulously using the original cut and paste method with scissors and glue.
Ross was an avid Red Sox fan and never thought he’d see the day when they would win a World Series, but he got to see it happen three times! An avid stamp collector, Ross enjoyed meeting young people who shared his passion, and often gave stamps away to help them grown their collections. He was proud to be a Freemason and was raised a Master Mason on January 16, 1957 at the King Solomon’s Lodge in Somerville, MA and transferred to Polaski Lodge 58 in Wells River, VT on December 2, 1985, where he remained in good standing and received his 55 year pin.
Ross was predeceased by his wife Evelyn in 2009, brother Kenneth McLeod 1983, nephew Brian McLeod 2006, great nephew Jordan Smith 2016.
He is survived by his daughter Joyce McLeod, Danville, VT, brother Fred McLeod, Cumberland Maine, niece Sandy Pike (Buddy), Donald McLeod (Linda), Pamela Smith (Brent) Cathy Dawson (David), and Vickie McLeod. Many great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews, and cousins throughout the country. The family would like to acknowledge Ellen Edwards and Dawn Pinette, and the Northeast Kingdom Council on Aging who without their assistance we would not have been able to keep him home as he wished.
Memorial donations should be made to the Northeast Kingdom Council on Aging, 481 Summer Street, Suite 101, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819
Funeral Services will be at the Groton United Methodist Church July 15th, 11:00 a.m. followed by interment with military honors at the Groton Village Cemetery.

Jordan Kenneth Smith
....show
, 31, Groton, VT, died on Friday March 4th, 2016 on Ricker Pond. Jordan was born June 5, 1984 in St. Johnsbury VT to Brent and Pamela (McLeod) Smith.
Jordan was the youngest of 4 boys and was never far from trouble growing up. The day he came home from the hospital the flooding was so bad his family thought the bridge below the house would be washed away, but the waters receded and he made it home. His mother said, “Jordan was the kind of kid who if you told him the stove was hot, he'd have to touch it to see if you were lying”. By the time he was 3 he had already rolled his first rig, getting pinned underneath it. He spent summers swimming with his brothers at Boulder Beach in Groton State Park and hours tromping though the woods building forts and playing whatever games they invented. During his high school years he was active in the Green Mountain Youth Theater and most weekend nights could be found standing around a campfire with his friends. Jordan attended Blue Mountain Union School from Kindergarten to Graduation in 2002. Having had many of the same teachers as his older brothers, they were all too familiar with the Smith Boy shenanigans, and by the time graduation rolled around, he had to check the diploma just be sure it was actually signed.
At a bonfire in the fall of 2002 Jordan met Sara Bissell; the two were immediately inseparable. Jordan moved out of his parents house and moved into an apartment in Enfield, NH with Sara, and after a short while there, the couple rented a small apartment in White River Jct. VT. While in the Upper Valley Jordan worked for Chili's Restaurant, Millers Auto Sales, Quechee Club, as a mason tender and as an apprentice electrician at LDT Electrical, eventually obtaining his journeyman's license. On October 21st, 2005, with two weeks notice to family and friends, Jordan married Sara at the Groton United Methodist Church. Shortly after marriage the couple moved to Groton to help care for Jordan's grandfather and then his great-uncle. Once back in Groton, Jordan formed NEK Electric where he and his childhood friend, Paul Emerson, worked together. During this time he took an EMT class and began to volunteer with the Groton-Ryegate F.A.S.T. Squad, and the Groton Vol. Fire Department as well as working for Lamoille Ambulance Service and Woodsville Rescue Ambulance. In the fall of 2015 Jordan was hired at the Riverbend Career and Technical Center in Bradford as a teacher in the electrical technology and residential wiring program.
Jordan was a gentleman farmer, raising goats, chickens, ducks and turkeys; certainly not for profit, but for the love of the craft. He enjoyed hiking, kayaking, shooting and fishing (although he was never as good as Sara). He tried his hand at panning gold, smoking meat, amateur astronomy, and a thousand other little projects. He was Mr. Toad from Mr. Toads Wild Ride, always off in a different direction exploring something new. Jordan had a strong moral compass, and while many would sit by and tolerate racist or bigoted comments, he would speak up regardless of the consequences. He was raised a Master Mason on March 2, 2006 at the United Brethren Lodge #21 in White River Jct. VT where he served as the Junior Steward for 3 years from 2008 to 2011.
Jordan excelled at every job he ever had, (except selling cars, he said he was too honest), but he never defined himself by any job, instead by the relationships in his life. He was the good friend, the fun uncle, the baby brother and loving husband. Jordan was the center of attention and life of the party. If you were talking with Jordan it was definitely not about the weather, he always had some new adventure to tell you about.
He is survived by his wife Sara Smith, his parents, three brothers Adam Smith and his wife Tammy of Littleton, NH, Joshua Smith and his wife Edith of Morrisville, VT, Aaron Smith and his wife Alissa Groton, VT, nieces and nephews, Andrew, Christopher, Amelia, Arden, Ajax, Adeline, Elizabeth, Artemis, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and his furry friend Kodin. He is predeceased by a nephew Jonathan.
Visiting Hours will be held at the Groton Vol. Fire Department, 1456 Scott Hwy, Groton, VT 05046 on Thursday March 10, 2016 from 4-8 PM. Funeral Services will be on Friday March 11, 2016 at 10AM at the Groton United Methodist Church 1397 Scott Hwy, Groton, VT. Those who wish may make donations in Jordan's memory to Groton Vol. Fire Department Inc. 1476 Scott Hwy, Groton, VT 05046.
