BARRE TOWN - Carlo “Butch” Lamberti
....show , 74, passed away suddenly on April 30, 2016 doing what he loved doing most, carpentry work.

In 1964, he was honorably discharged from the Vermont Army National Guard. On September 9, 1967, he married the love of his life, Linda Partridge, making their home in Barre Town, where they raised their three sons. Butch was a truck driver; driving for JB Flanagans, Pouliot & Corriveau and most recently for Vermont Creamery. After his retirement, he ran a lawn care business along with his grandson. To know Butch would be to know he loved to tell stories, tease people, but mostly you knew he was a man of his word and would give you the shirt off his back. If you were someone important to someone in his family that would automatically elevate you to being a “family” member. Family was Butch’s priority; his pride in his three sons and seven grandchildren was resonated in his stories of them and a smile on his face when he was with them. His hobbies included hunting at the family camp in Tunbridge, reading and watching westerns and his beautiful carpentry work. Butch leaves behind; his wife Linda of 48 years, his stepfather and mother, Charles and Corinne Smith and brother and his wife, Peter (Dorothy) Lamberti; three sons; Scott (Maria), Steven (Jaylene) both of Barre and Jason of Lyman, WY; seven grandchildren; Andrew, Emily, Ariel, Tiffany, Lillian, and Bryton Lamberti and Aubrey Benoit, as well as sisters-in-law, Deborah (James) LaMoy of Highgate Center, Joy (James Huntsman) Partridge and Alison Partridge both of Montpelier. WASHINGTON - Donald George Milne
....show , 81, of Washington, Vermont died peacefully on January 24, 2016. Don had been diagnosed with advanced metastatic cancer three weeks ago. The son of Henry and Catharine (Fraher) Milne, Don was born the second of four children in Barre, Vermont on July 16, 1934. Don met Marion Carson on July 3, 1954 in Lake George, New York. They had their first date the next day and were married on March 15, 1957. Marion was the one romantic love of his life. They were partners in marriage, parenting, grand-parenting, business, public service, politics, and all that they loved about life and each other. Marion predeceased him in August of 2014.
Don is survived by three of his children: Scott Milne of Pomfret, Vermont; Chris Milne and his wife Marjorie of Dover, Massachusetts; and Cathy Frey and her husband Scott Frey, of Barre, Vermont; and daughter-in-law Deborah Milne of White River Junction, Vermont. A son Keith Milne predeceased him in 1971. He had eight grandchildren: Keith Milne, Elise Milne, Nicole Frey, Jane Milne, Alex Frey, Lee Milne, Claire Milne, and George Milne. He leaves a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Jean and Gus Mastro, brother John Milne, and sisters-in-law Kay Milne, Agnes Eller, Jean DeFrees and Irene Hinek. He is predeceased by his brother Ted Milne and in-laws, Harry and Anne Carson, Francis and Julia West, Frank and Pauline Seiferheld, Bill Eller, Gene De Frees, Robert Hinek, and Marion’s siblings who died as children; William, Charles, Billy, John, and Marion Carson. Don also leaves many nieces and nephews, and his yellow lab, Vince. Don was born and raised in Barre. As a child he spent a lot of time working in the gardens with his great-grandfather, George Riddle of Monymusk, Scotland, at the home of his grandmother—Jennie Milne—in North Barre. He paid his way through Boston University with summer jobs in Lake Morey and Lake George, and drove a cab and managed a parking lot during the school year. While attending New York Law School he was a full-time employee of Royal Globe Insurance. Don began working in the Vermont House of Representative’s Clerk’s Office with Clerk Dale Brooks and assistant Clerk Bob Picher in 1960. He was elected Clerk of the House of Representatives in 1993, and was unanimously re-elected every legislative session until his retirement in October of last year. Don Milne worked with thousands of Vermont Legislators in his roles in the House and Senate over the past fifty-five years. These were experiences and relationships he cherished. According to Vermont Historian Paul Gillies, it is likely that Don worked with more citizen legislators as a legislative Clerk than any person in Vermont’s History. Don loved Vermont and he cherished our Legislature. He appreciated the good fortune he had to be a part of it for so long. Earlier in his career Don owned his own Law office in Barre and expanded with a second office in Chelsea. Later, he worked for many years in the Law firm of Richard E. Davis in Barre. He respected Richard Davis and the opportunity association with his firm afforded Don and his family. In 1975, he co-founded Milne Travel, and worked behind the scenes as a book-keeper, officer, and advisor until his death. Don served his home town of Washington Vermont in many capacities over the years, and was the longest serving Selectboard member in the history of the town at the time of his death. March of 2016 will be the first Washington, Vermont Town Meeting without Don on the ballot in several decades. He and Marion were recognized by their town as “Citizens of the Year” in 2010. Don Milne was a tireless public servant and citizen. He was co-founder of the Barre Elks Senior Citizen dinners—which have served over 50,000 meals, he is a former president of the board of the Vermont League of Cities and Towns, former board member and president of Green Mountain Economic Development Council Board, former president of Vermont Young Republicans, former Barre City Grand Juror, and former Vermont Legislator—serving in a two-member district with future House Speaker, Walter “Peanut” Kennedy. Don was a confident, humble, hard-working, and non-judgmental person. He led not with words, but by a great example of the possibilities of a life well lived. Friends may call at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre on Friday from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. His funeral and life celebration will be held Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, 19 Seminary Street, Barre. A donation of time or money to the charity of your choice or to the Keith Milne Fund at the Calef Memorial Library, 2964 VT Route 110, Washington, VT 05675 would be most welcome in Don’s honor.

He was born on November 15, 1924 in Springfield, MA to James Gustav Moran and Margaret Maloney Moran. He grew up with his older sister, Mildred Moran Merkel and his father in Chicopee, MA. Growing up, he spent summers at an island camp on Chicopee River (adjacent to the Ludlow Country Club) and the remaining months in boarding homes. Summers were filled with raising rabbits, fishing and retrieving golf balls from the river. At the age of 11, he earned an English bicycle from his Boy Scout troop and travelled alone to Old Orchard Beach, ME by way of the Horn of the Moon in East Montpelier. There, he met his caring “mom and dad Morse”. Years later, he met Carmella on a blind date. She became his love and best friend, and they spent a happy and wonderful life together. She inspired Charlie to write poems and love letters that she remembers fondly. The Morse Farm became Charlie and Mel’s first home after their marriage on September 4, 1944. He loved Vermont and soon purchased the Bisson farm in Orange where he resided for the rest of his years. He used his carpentry skills to rebuild their Orange home from floor to ceiling. Charlie had a strong work ethic. His jobs included work at the Springfield Armory (one of the largest weaponry suppliers during WW II), the Flint Lumber Co., Allen Lumber Co., Lane Manufacturing Co., and as a machinist at Smith Whitcomb & Cook Co., Trow & Holden Co., and Sprague Electric. He retired from Sprague Electric after thirty years of hard work. He spent many enjoyable summer months at the family’s camp on Marshfield Pond over the span of fifty years. During his retirement years, he and Mel travelled the country in their orange VW “hippie van”, enjoying camping and many time-share resorts. They loved playing cards, meeting new people, dancing, and sharing life. Many stories have been told about their adventures. In earlier years, Charlie enjoyed hunting and fishing. Charlie was a man of great faith, accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior at an early age. His boarding house mothers nurtured his spiritual life. Charlie actively served in many roles at the East Barre Congregational Church. Both he and Mel were honored as Emeritus Deacon and Deaconess. He substitute pastored at several churches and was a great supporter of youth ministries, including Camp Wihakowi in Northfield. Charlie was also committed to serving the broader community. He served as an active Orange School Board director and catalyst for busing and the consolidation of several one-room schools. Charlie now rests in his eternal home. He will be greatly missed here on earth, but believers may see and enjoy him again at his heavenly home. WILLIAMSTOWN - Brad Peterson
....show of Steller Road, died on Monday, December 12, 2016, with his beloved wife, Suzanne Murphy, comforting him.
He was born in Vernon, VT, on August 2, 1941, the son of Alfred and Irene Peterson, and grew up on a farm in Conway, MA. Brad was an organic farmer, raising glorious gladiolas and every vegetable he could possibly grow in Vermont. He was instrumental in keeping a small Farmers’ Market thriving in Williamstown for years.
When Brad was young, he attended Stockbridge (MA) Agricultural School, and then worked as a landscaper on golf courses. He was in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. His unit, stationed in Alaska, was readying to go to Vietnam in 1964 when the earthquake kept them in Alaska for a year of assisting with the aftermath. After discharge, Brad worked in factories in Connecticut and in Springfield, VT. Most recently, he worked for the Barre Housing Authority, where he specialized in growing flowers and landscaping. The residents of several complexes appreciated Brad’s gardening talents and his kindness towards them.
With his hearty laugh, great sense of humor, interest in people and nature and his kind generosity, Brad was loved, respected and appreciated by family, friends, and community members. They all benefitted from his garden abundance.
Brad is survived by Suzanne, his wife of 30 years, who will cherish memories of their good life together and of Brad’s kindness, humor, and caring. He is also survived by his brother, Al (Char), of Oregon; nephews Eric and Nathan Peterson, of Massachusetts, and Chip Samson of California; nieces Kristen Compton (Kevin), of California, Alissa Morton (Jack) of North Carolina, and Tamara Samson of North Carolina; grand-nephews Anthony and Thomas Peterson and grand-nieces Stephanie Peterson and Aleigh Compton. Suzanne’s children, Matthew Czaplinski (Caryn Brady) of Massachusetts, and Anne Treadwell of Burlington also survive Brad. Six grandchildren blessed Brad’s life for years: Charlotte, Jack, Bobby, and Ethan Treadwell, and Claire and Maeve Czaplinski.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Tom, and more recently by his good friend, Howie. Always a Yankee fan, Brad had a marvelous memory of going, at age 10, with his father to Fenway to see Joe DiMaggio play. Running was also a big part of Brad’s life and strength. Until his recent illness, he ran five times a week on dirt roads. He ran many races and marathons earlier in his life, including the 1982 and 1984 Boston Marathons, and was proud of his 2:47 PR in the 1983 Maine Coast Marathon. Brad often used sports metaphors in his humor and recently told a good friend that he was in “extra innings.” Brad’s humor was a gift to all who knew him, especially his family.
Suzanne wishes to thank her very supportive children, Brad’s brother and wife, and his nephews, for their visits, as well as good friends. Maureen Conway, their dear cousin from Colorado, was also with Brad and Suzanne at a critical time in his illness. Suzanne especially wants to express her appreciation for the caring staff at CVH on 2 South, Dr. Anthony Williams, Hospice, and the incredible staff of Woodridge.
There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Brad’s memory could be made to the Williamstown Food Shelf, the Sierra Club, or Kurn Hattin Home for Children (Westminster, VT), which he always supported, as did his father. In Spring, a gathering may be planned. Brad’s ashes will then be scattered on his farm, near his parents’ graves, and in Lake Champlain, where he loved to fish, especially in the winter.

On June 29, 1968 she married the love of her life Matt. After graduation Judy went to work for the State of VT, first for the Highway Department and later for the Education Department. She worked for many areas of the Education Department, but spent the bulk of her career working for Traffic Safety and Driver?s Education. Judy loved her work and was committed to the young drivers of the State of Vermont. She believed that Driver's Ed was as important as any “academic” area in schools and worked hard to keep it in our high schools. She earned many awards for her work in Driver's Ed, including VDTSEA's Lindsey Townsend Regional Award, the Jay Curtis Award, and the John Harvey Memorial Service Award. She would always get so excited in the weeks before the conference because she knew she would see “her” kids. She also loved hearing from kids she had mentored and learning of their accomplishments in life after high school.
In the warmer months Judy loved to garden, go camping at Stillwater State Park in Groton where she loved to sit by the lake and watch the loons, and kayak on VT's many lakes and ponds. She also loved to watch her daughter Karen play softball and developed a special relationship with the girls on Karen's Women's League team, the “Hooker” girls. During the colder months Judy loved to spend time doing her genealogy and playing board and card games (which she also loved to cheat at). She had a strong faith in God and was a member of the Barre Congregational Church where she was baptized and where she served on many committees. She was a volunteer at the Vermont History Center, and a former member of the South Barre Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary.

BARRE TOWN - Frederick W. Van Buskirk
....show , 77, passed away Saturday, October 29, 2016, at the Central Vermont Hospital of natural causes.
Born in Pennsylvania to Dr. Frederick and Margaret (Moffitt) Van Buskirk, Fred moved to Vermont at a young age and spent his childhood and adolescence growing up on Burlington’s “Fraternity Row.” He graduated from the University of Vermont and from Syracuse University obtaining a masters in journalism. After college he took off for New York City landing stints with an ad agency and with Newsweek. His career, however, was interrupted by Uncle Sam who called him to teach English in the Army’s GED program. Following his service, he decided to seek a job in Vermont and ski a season. That winter started a long-term career with a national health agency that took him into every town in Vermont at one time or another. With so much traveling, he had no time to find a suitable office for his organization and turned to Bud Heney for assistance. Years later, playing in a tennis group of retired and senior businessmen including Bud, Fred again expressed interest in real estate. Bud said if he passed the test he could join his company, then W.J. Heney & Sons. Fred passed and began his second life-long career in Vermont.
Fred loved real estate. Initially attracted to it by the opportunity for autonomy and self-direction, he realized, after 20 years, what “held him in” through up and down economies was the connection and satisfaction it gave. He loved helping a new buyer or someone who hadn’t bought or sold a home for a long time navigate their way through the process. “That’s the fun, that’s the satisfaction,” he said. The fun and satisfaction, however, was not always appreciated by his family. The yearly Christmas ritual of the dining room table covered from end to end with hundreds of holiday cards to be stuffed, addressed, and sealed was one tradition they could have done without. Even family outings included some aspect of real estate, whether it was stopping at the office, or checking on a listing. Fred was the commensurate agent totally dedicated to his job.
In addition to real estate transactions the business provided other satisfactions, such as serving as Central Vermont Board of Realtors President in 1998 and serving on a number of local board committees. Fred’s greatest satisfaction, however, was working in the Heney office. He enjoyed the staff immensely, especially his gals, Alice and Carol. Without them, navigating the world of technology would have been a disaster.
Fred was an avid tennis player. Nothing, not even real estate, would interfere with his games. Every Tuesday and Friday morning he would dash off (usually a little late) to meet with his friends. In later years, as the group matured, the playing slowed to a weekly session. Fred continued tennis until recently when his health prevented it. Fred loved skiing almost as much as tennis and spent many winter days hitting the trails. Tennis and skiing were his recreation and his therapy.
Survivors include his wife, Suzanne; his daughter, Lauren and her husband, Bobby, of Virginia Beach; his sons Andrew and Freddie, both of Vermont; a sister, Marianna and her husband Edmond Little of Jericho, Vermont; two brothers, George of Massena, New York; and Emmett and his wife, Jo of Bristol, Vermont. He also has several wonderful nephews and nieces; Krista Hammel of Essex Junction; Stacy and her husband, Mark Mailloux, of Kingston, N. H; Jeremy and Mariko Matsumura Van Buskirk of Boston; Cameron and Lorena Van Buskirk of Virginia; and Duncan and Amy Van Buskirk also of Virginia.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Barre Town EMS who worked so diligently trying to keep Fred with us. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 5, at 11:00 AM in the Barre Congregational Church. Calling hours will be Friday, November 4, from 6-8 at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home. A reception for friends and family following the service will be held at Fred’s home in Barre Town.
