Gertrude Jean (Willard) Whitehill
....show passed away very peacefully on Friday, August 19th, in the Kirby home where she had lived and loved for 64 of her 86 years on a beautiful summer afternoon in the loving embrace of her family. Trudy was born May 1, 1930 in Newport, Vermont and grew up in West Charleston. She graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1948. She lived and worked for a time in Boston, working for the Red Sox organization. The next phase of her life began when she met a handsome young “Pony Boy” named Bernie Whitehill. She danced into his heart and remained there for the next 36 years. They were married in 1952 and she came home to Kirby, where she was a busy young farm wife and mother to Donna, Bradley, Cheryl and Gary. Trudy worked at the Goss Company in St. Johnsbury, Maple Grove Farms for nine years and then for many years at Fairbanks Scales. It was during this time she earned the nickname “Mario” for her rapid trips to work in the morning. Trudy had a caring, giving, generous heart. She cared for Bernie with his health issues until his death in 1988. Three weeks after Bernie’s passing, her life would take another turn when her youngest son Gary was diagnosed with MS at the age of 26. For the next 18 years, she devoted herself to his care, travelling to Florida for months at a time to help him manage in his home, helping him move to Salt Lake City, Utah, taking him to Germany for treatment at a special clinic, and sharing a trip to Maui, Hawaii with him. She helped him make the most of all his life, whether driving him on steep mountain roads to Park City, Utah to take a run with the Olympic bobsled training team or holding her breath while he went hang gliding or other assisted sports. He did not tell her he had been skydiving until he had made several jumps. She was a tenacious fighter for all of his needs. When Gary returned to Kirby, a specially outfitted apartment was built on to her home and she continued her devoted care until his death in 2005. Trudy was known for sending wonderful packages to her children and grandchildren, containing everything from fishing poles to fully frosted cakes. Her cookies were happily devoured by the grandchildren as soon as they arrived. You would never leave her home hungry if she had anything to say about it. She rarely showed up to visit without at least a fully cooked turkey and a bowl of her famous potato salad. She loved the simple country pleasures in life, nature, birds, heifers grazing in the pasture across from her home, lilacs in the spring and beautiful leaves in the fall. She enjoyed spending time with her sister Isabel and husband Dwight in Orleans or heading out to Alan and Doreen Hubbard’s on many an evening after Bernie’s passing. She was an avid fan of “The Bold and the Beautiful” and rarely missed an episode. Trudy is probably best known as the “Worrier in Chief” of her family. Her care and her thoughts were always for others. She was an involved and loving grandmother to Jeff and Allie, and was thrilled to be “Gigi” to Madden, Linley and Eisley. She handled her 2010 Parkinson’s diagnosis with grace and dignity and kept her sense of humor through some very challenging days. Her medical conditions would limit her mobility, but not her spirit. Trudy is survived and will be missed forever by her children Donna Whitehill, Bradley Whitehill and Cheryl McMahon, all of Kirby, her grandchildren Jeff McMahon and his wife Michelle and their children Madden, Linley and Eisley of Colchester, Allison McMahon of Stratton, her brother Anson Willard of Newport and nieces Lisa Burke, Loraine Limlaw, Mona Gadwah and Helen Bicknell and her nephews Wayne Willard, Scott Willard and Rod Roberts. She was predeceased by her husband Bernie Whitehill, her sisters Helen Willard and Isabel Roberts and her brothers Gordon and Stanley Willard. Special thanks to the many loving caregivers who helped make it possible for Trudy to live all of her days in the home that she loved: Marilyn Williams, Mary Smith, Connie Simons, Ellen Gray and all the helpers from Caledonia Home Health and Hospice. A celebration of Trudy’s life will be held in Kirby at a date to be announced by her family. Memorial contributions, marked for ‘Hospice’ could be directed to Caledonia Home Health, 161 Sherman Dr., St. Johnsbury VT 05819.

Bernier Mayo
....show , longtime St. Johnsbury Academy headmaster, passed away Sunday evening, Aug. 14, 2016 at the age of 78. He was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont on February 24, 1938, one of seven children born to Francis and Dometille (Bernier) Mayo. He was predeceased by two sisters, Elaine Driscoll and Anne Warren Brill, as well by a brother, Frederick Mayo. Bernier’s childhood recollections were abundant, engaging, and made clear that from an early age, he was a most enterprising man about town. While in first grade, he secured his first job as paper boy; he liked to tell of the Christmas when he first had the earnings to purchase gifts for his family, buying hair cream for his oldest brother and copies of the same comic book for everyone else. Throughout his school years, Bernier worked as busboy, bellhop, movie ticket seller, bowling-pin setter-- these and countless odd neighborhood and family jobs forged his lifelong respect for hard and honest work done well. In 1952, Bernier entered St. Johnsbury Academy, beginning the connection that shaped his life for the next 64 years. He often reflected upon his sense that the Academy made him a serious person. He spoke of teachers who brought him alive to ideas, and who by virtue of treating him with attention and expectation, made him see himself as having the power and freedom to do good in the world. Bernier believed that this was the job of education: to make young people understand themselves in this way. Having graduated from SJA in 1956, Bernier attended the University of Vermont, as well as seminary at the University of Montreal, receiving a B.A. in English from UVM, and later, an M.A. from the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury. In 1964, he returned to the hometown he loved; it was the year that propelled him into all the rest, as first he became an English teacher at St. Johnsbury Academy, and then he met Jeanette Pike, the petite but formidable junior high English teacher down the hill. Bernier and Jeanette married in 1965. When he became headmaster at the School of the Holy Child on Long Island in 1972, they left St. Johnsbury with the shared dream and plan of returning. In the years that followed, they immersed themselves in a succession of schools and communities with much energy. Bernier’s leadership was re-invigorating everywhere he served. In 1976, the Mayos moved to northern Virginia, where Bernier served as superintendent of schools for the archdiocese of Arlington. Knowing that he needed to complement his understanding of private and parochial schools with experience in public school administration, in 1978 Bernier accepted a position as superintendent of schools in Gouverneur, NY. During this time, Bernier also commenced study to become a deacon in the Catholic church. It was a sustained, intense, and faith-filled commitment, rewarded by his ordination in 1983. Bernier and Jeanette were elated by his appointment as headmaster of St. Johnsbury Academy. His years in this role and as community leader were vivid and rich, fueled by his desire to give back to the places of his origin. He brought the strength of his intellect, personality, and work ethic to many things in addition to the Academy: spearheading the effort to build a facility for CALEX, writing the town plan, co-founding Good Shepherd Catholic School, serving in the Vermont State Senate, and sustaining St. Paul’s School in Barton as principal in its final year are some of these accomplishments. In the summer of 2013, Bernier was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent related surgery. One day later, he suffered a major stroke, resulting in paralysis of his left side. The stroke altered his life greatly but never extinguished his spirit. He lived most of his final three years at the Pines Rehabilitation Center in Lyndon. Bernier adored Jeanette’s daily visits, and he remained most attentive to all she read to him from the Caledonian Record. In conversations during these years, he expressed gratitude and wonder for the life he’d been given to lead. The Reverend Mr. Bernier L. Mayo is survived by his dear wife Jeanette; daughter Erin Mayo and husband Peter Gurnis of Fryeburg, ME, and grandchildren Musa, Maeve, and Gunnar; daughter Darcy Dugas and husband Scott of Guilford, CT, and grandchildren Andre, Molly, and Parker; two brothers, John and Michael Mayo of St. Johnsbury; sister Marceline Nadeau of Lancaster, NH; nieces, nephews, and their extended families. Visiting hours will be held at the Sayles Funeral Home Thursday evening 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held in St. Johnsbury at St. John the Evangelist Church on Main St. this Friday, Aug. 19 beginning at 10:30 a.m. Selected speakers will begin the service prior to the Mass beginning at 11 a.m. with The Most Reverand Christopher J. Coyne, celebrant.

He was born in Northfield Falls, Vermont on Dec. 11, 1942, one of six children born to Walter and Mary (Provost) Smith. Bob had endless great memories about growing up on the family farm in Danville. If you spent any amount of time with him, much of that time would have been spent listening to him tell you about all the good times he had growing up and throughout his life. He was a gifted artist and vocalist with an amazing wit and wisdom beyond his years. He was a member of both the LTS and LI choruses as well as the Vermont Children's Theatre. He sang with the Caledonia Chordsmen Barbershop Quartet. He won the LTS talent show in 8th grade with an incredible rendition of Have You Ever Seen The Rain. He and his brother Tyler had started to work on original music.

Zach battled cancer for six years. He never complained. He was always happy even though so much had been taken from him. He loved his family very much and especially loved being Uncle Zachy. He looked forward to spending time with his tight circle of friends who stuck with him throughout his entire battle.

Lenna Rose Bliss Ranney
....show , 89, of 148 Stetson Terrace, St. Johnsbury Center, VT died Monday, November 21, 2016, at The Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndonville, VT.
She was born on June 10, 1927 in Addison, VT to John and Adeline (Winch) Bliss. When she was about two years old, her parents separated and Lenna was placed in an orphanage in Shelburne, VT. She lived there until the age of 16 when the owners of Vermont Transit Company, Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Thompson, hired her to assist in the care of their two young children. She lived with the family and graduated from Burlington High School.
Lenna married Theodore C. Ranney on October 22, 1950 at the Thompson home in Burlington. They honeymooned at Niagara Falls and then made their home in St. Johnsbury. In 1962 they moved to their new house on Stetson Terrace. They had three daughters. Lenna was a homemaker and delighted in her daughters. They were very close all of their lives. The family spent many weekends camping at locations around the state. Lenna loved to knit, do cross-word puzzles, and had a life-long love of reading until her eyesight declined in 2016. She was an avid card player and was always ready for a game of Spades or Canasta. Lenna also enjoyed eating at restaurants with many of her friends and family. She was a Boston Red Sox fan until the end and watched their games on TV.
Lenna and Ted were active CBers and charter members of Caledonia County REACT #2424 as Unit #1. They served REACT for over 31 years with Lenna holding the position of secretary and treasurer for many years. She was the glue that held the team together and helped organize and schedule team activities such as traffic control to assist local police departments at accident scenes and at parades until the team dissolved in 2004.
Ted predeceased her on March 29, 2007. Lenna never learned to drive so it was very difficult for her after his death, but she was a survivor. She began using the RCT bus for trips to the mall. Lenna volunteered for LifeLine and enjoyed contacting many of the local subscribers each week to check on them and make sure their LifeLine was working.
Lenna had a big heart that included many people from all walks of life. She was always calling people to see how they were feeling or just to chat. Her “sassy” attitude was always with a smile as she loved to tease and be teased. When she moved to The Pines in April 2016, the staff learned to love her. Many comments were made to the family about how her smile would make their day or she would have a story to tell that cheered them up. Despite the hardness of her early life and the years after Ted’s death, she was always a positive person and tried to find the best in everyone.
Survivors include her three daughters, Donna (and Reed) Garfield, 97 Liberty Lane, Lyndonville, VT 05851; Linda (and Stephen) Burson, 349 N. 14th Street, Schoolcraft, MI 49087; and Bonnie (and George) Babcock, P.O. Box 1, Lyndon Center, VT 05850; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Lenna was predeceased by her sisters, Marjorie Howe in 1967 and Gertrude Hathaway Eckert in 2008, and her brother, Lawrence Bliss in 2015. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Christine Ranney of South Windsor, CT, and Dorothy Bliss of Essex, NY along with their families.
At Lenna’s request, there will be no visiting hours or memorial services. Graveside services will be at the discretion of the family.
