BARRE – Drew Isaac Bernier
....show , 7, of Barre, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at the Boston Children’s Hospital in Massachusetts. Drew suffered from severe, life threatening, complications from a bone marrow transplant he received in May, 2014 to treat a pediatric form of Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), which is a genetic blood disorder. Drew had fought a courageous and inspiring battle with his illness that had people from his community, to all the way around the world, supporting him. His loving family was with him at his bedside at the time of his passing.
Born on January 14, 2009 at the Gifford Hospital in Randolph, he was the son of Josh and Marie (Gordon) Bernier. He was baptized at the Barre Congregational Church. Drew attended Kindergarten at Barre City Elementary School and pre-school at The Golden Apple Preschool and Learning Center. Drew adored school and had a special bond with each of his teachers.
Drew was a, caring, funny, outgoing, and friendly seven year old boy who loved exploring and learning all about the world around him. . He loved cooking and organizing with his mom, playing with trucks, going to mud bogs with his dad, working on his dad’s mud truck, scouting for deer, and golfing with his dad. Though his activities became restricted during his illness, he was perfectly happy spending quality time with his mom and dad and hanging out with his friends when he could.. He also loved creating sand art, building legos, acting like the real super hero that he was, and watching his favorite shows on TV, such as cartoons, Swap People, Gold Rush, and Ax Men. He especially loved being a big brother to Sophia, and she loved him from the very first time she laid eyes on him. As his parents, we are very comforted by knowing that Drew will always be there to look over his baby sister. While much of Drew’s time during the last two years of his life was spent at Boston Children’s Hospital, he did not let that bring his infectious spirit down. The hospital became our home and Drew formed such strong bonds with many of the nurses, doctors and staff at 6 West while they were treating him. They joked that Drew was “The Mayor” of 6 West. We are forever grateful to the dedicated workers at Boston Children’s Hospital. Drew rarely complained or cried about his situation and we believe this was due to all the love and support he received. The strength and courage Drew possessed over the last two years was remarkable and it helped us all remain positive and united as a family. Drew overcame incredible odds and physical challenges time and time again throughout his illness and it has been an absolute privilege to be his parents. His will to survive and winning smile will live in the hearts of many forever.
Drew is survived by his parents, Josh and Marie Bernier and his two-year-old sister, Sophia Bernier of Barre; his grandparents, Karen Gordon and Chuck Acebo of Barre Town, Jim and Sue Bernier of East Barre and Elaine and Ron Duke of Marshfield; one uncle, Mike Bernier of Williamstown; three aunts, Christine Elwell and her husband, Brian, of Northfield, Jenn Bernier of Berlin, and Britney Bernier of East Barre as well as many cousins.
His grandfather, Drew A. Gordon of Barre, predeceased him on July 15, 2001. Marie’s father never had the honor of meeting Drew and Josh and I are comforted by the knowledge that both Drew’s are now together playing fetch with our 10 year-old English Bulldog, Maggie, who passed away last fall.
A Service of Remembrance and celebration of Drew’s life will be held at the Barre Auditorium on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. Following the service there will be a candlelight vigil outside the Auditorium and they ask that those who wish to partake could bring a small candle for themselves. The family would also like to ask those in attendance to wear their “Drewstrong” apparel or orange shirt.

His early years were spent on the farm at the Farmer homestead, and he enlisted in the Canadian Army during World War II, where he obtained the rank of Corporal and saw action throughout Europe.
Following discharge from the army, he migrated to the United States, became a naturalized citizen, and settled in on the McKnight Farm in East Montpelier, where he joined his older brother, John, and Ella McKnight in running a dairy operation.

Always the cat lover, cats found a warm spot in his lap and a comfy place in his bed at night. NORTHFIELD FALLS - Cornelius (Ki) Granai Jr.
....show , 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Northfield Falls.
Ki was born on September 29, 1925 in Barre, the son of Cornelius and Ruth (Carpenter) Granai.
He attended school in Barre and was in the Spaulding High School class of 1943.
After high school he was part of the V-12 program and was sent to Bates, Middlebury, and Cornell, becoming a commissioned officer in the US Navy and serving on a sub-chaser in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, he studied at Syracuse University on the GI Bill and graduated in the class of 1948. He went on to medical school and was a graduate of the University of Vermont College of Medicine, class of 1952. He was called back into the military during the Army’s “doctor draft” and was stationed at Fort Belvoir in Virginia.
He met his wife of 68 years, Loraine (Friberg) Granai, at the Lincoln School skating rink in the eighth grade, and they were married in 1947 in the Barre Congregational Church,
Eventually he set up a medical practice on South Main Street in Barre, becoming the first OBGYN in Central Vermont. His black “doctor bag” was always near the door for house-calls. At that time he worked out of the Barre City Hospital and Heaton Hospital in Montpelier. When the Central Vermont Hospital was built, his practice moved to “Hospital Hill” where he was a partner over the years with Dirk Romeyn, Stephen Woodruff, and John Coates. Throughout his career, he delivered thousands of babies. He enjoyed meeting people later in life whose children he had delivered, and the people who told him that he had delivered them. He lived through huge changes in the medical field, but through all of the changes, he remained dedicated to caring for his patients. He had a deep respect for all the medical personnel at Central Vermont Hospital, where he served as Chief of Staff. He retired in 1990.
A long-time resident of Barre (and proud of it), he and Loraine moved to Northfield Falls four years ago to be closer to family. That move allowed four generations to tumble around each other daily. His love of family was evident in the way all were welcome with whatever cares they carried into Ki and Loraine’s home. He was a man of integrity who listened, and even if he disagreed, he did so without passing judgment on the person. His steady presence will be greatly missed.
Ki loved spending time with his family any time of year, but he especially enjoyed the summer when the entire family gathered at the family camp in South Hero. Ki and Loraine supported their family in every way possible, including traveling to all the events in which their grandchildren participated. They were the number one fans on the sidelines and in audiences all over New England and beyond.
He was an avid skier for many years, and while he skied in many places, Mad River Glen was his favorite area. Gardening became a passion for him, (woe to any weed), and the gardens around their home on Abbott Avenue in Barre earned a Garden Club award. He also enjoyed traveling, playing golf, reading history-related books and watching old movies, especially ones starring John Wayne. His membership of more than 60 years in the Barre Congregational Church was very important to him. He is survived by: his wife Loraine. Son: Cornelius (Skip) Granai, Providence, Rhode Island
Grandchildren: Cornelius (Tad) Granai, Robert Granai and their mother Mary Manzi, Lily Granai, Kile Granai and their mother Cheryl Granai. Great-Grandchildren: Hannah, Lilah, Ava, Tyler and Ella Granai
Daughter: Mary Corrigan (Edward) Northfield Falls, Vermont. Grandchildren: Kevin Corrigan, Rebecca Corrigan (Adam Feldman), Ann Corrigan, Great-grandchildren: Eli and Owen Feldman
Daughter: Susan Granai (David Van Slyke) Yarmouth, Maine. Grandchildren: Loraine Van Slyke, Anna Van Slyke. German Exchange student/daughter Juliane Walk. Sister: Carolyn Vercoe, Sister-in-law: Joanne Granai. Many beloved nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by: Brother, Edwin Granai, Brother-in-law, Norman Vercoe, his wife’s siblings and spouses, Melvin and Merilyn Friberg and Robert and Sylvia Stewart.
There will be a celebration of Ki’s life beginning at the Barre Congregational Church on Saturday March 19 at 2:00 and continuing at Simply Delicious after the service. All are welcome.
For those wishing to send a note to Loraine, the address is P.O. Box 132, Northfield Falls, VT 05664.
Donations in his memory may be made to any charitable organization, but ones close to Ki’s heart were The Vermont Foodbank 33 Parker Road, Barre, VT 05641 and Home Health and Hospice 600 Granger Rd., Barre, VT 05641.

After retiring, Betty loved to go to yard sales with her sister and best friend, Charlotte, where she acquired a large collection of dolls. The collection came to be appreciated even more as her four granddaughters came along, and then, great-granddaughters. Forward thinking, Grammie Betty!
Betty’s last few years were spent quietly at home with Chico. BARRE – Marion Mabel Hatch Heath
....show , 96, of Perry Street, went to her final rest in the early morning hours of Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at the Mayo Rehabilitation and Continuing Care Facility in Northfield. She had moved to Mayo Assisted Healthcare in October 2015.
Born on October 31, 1919, in Peacham, Vermont, Marion was the third child of Lee Brewster Hatch II and Ethel Howe Hatch.
At the age of 2 ½ years, her family moved to Walden, Vermont. She had some memory of the trip, as her mother who was pregnant was very uncomfortable in the wagon seat so she and her mother walked part of the way. They moved to this larger farm so her father could support a larger family.
Marion grew up with her sister Hazel and brother Lee, walking miles to their designated school at the 4 corners. On very cold days neighbors invited them to stop in to warm up. Marion began her schooling at age 4, as her brother was beginning school and she wished to go with her playmate. It was allowed and she spent most of her time on the teacher’s lap.
Marion graduated from Danville High School, as Salutatorian, in 1935. On September 30, 1936, she and Herbert “Bernard” Heath of Cabot were married in Morrisville. Bernard was a farmer on the South Walden Road. To fund the dental program, Marion was very instrumental in starting the Cabot 4th of July parade and celebration, still an annual event.
She was the bookkeeper for the Cabot Creamery for 16 years, then went on to become the bookkeeper at the former Harry’s Discount Store on the Barre-Montpelier Road, for 16 years. Marion retired in 1977, at the age of 62.
She had belonged to the Cabot United Church and after moving to Barre, in 1994, had attended the Barre Congregational Church and belonged to the Women’s Fellowship there.
Marion had served in many capacities on the Committee of the Cabot Fall Foliage Festival.
She attended senior activities in Cabot and had belonged to the Montpelier Senior Center where she enjoyed line dancing lessons and teaching. Currently, she had belonged to the Barre Area Senior Center.
She had enjoyed being a long-time member of the Order of the Eastern Star and had filled all the Star Points and served as Worthy Matron.
Marion and her husband enjoyed being in Florida and, in 1988, bought their home in Naples. She spent 30 winters there and took part in the Hitching Post Recreation Center activities. She square danced and line danced and took part in their annual talent night.
In retirement, she had crocheted hundreds of afghans, one for every relative and in law, friends and some given for fundraising purposes.
Marion was an attentive, supportive, and loving wife to Bernard and mother to her children, and enjoyed her family which consists of many grandchildren; Jeffrey Sanborn of Morrisville; Scott Sanborn and wife Chong Kyu of Gainesville, VA; the children of Bernardine and the late Jack Barnett: Rick Barnett and wife Lynn of St. Albans; Julie and husband Todd Emmell of Essex Jct.; Pamela and husband Steve Fontaine of Williston; Jaci Barnett and partner Lisa Bindas of Wareham, MA; Theresa (Gokey) and husband Mike Muir of Colchester; Debra Lee Heath and husband Rob Carr of Northfield; Jessie Heath and husband Rick Swan of Fairfax; Laurie Haslam Brewer of Grapevine, TX; Tracy Haslam and husband Dan Reed of Essex Jct. BARRE - Gloria Jean
....show , born on June 4, 1948 in Morrisville, Vermont, had the most wonderful smile, a laugh that was filled with joy, an incredibly generous heart, and a quick wit. As a girl growing up on the farm in Plainfield, Gloria walked into the fields and thought about her life. Specifically, she pondered the type of person she wanted to be, the type of woman and the type of mother.
Certain things, like her sense of humor, were likely both God-given and inherited from her Davis and Graves kin. Whether she was at work laughing at the investigators who played dollar poker or taking part in pranks, she enjoyed a good joke and loved retelling such stories at the dinner table each night.
While she inherited a generous spirit, she also chose that characteristic and path for her life. Gloria constantly did and kept doing for others. One day she’d be steaming up the kitchen windows baking homemade apple pies for neighbors, and the next day she’d work around the clock to sew Christmas stockings for a newly married couple or quilt a christening blanket for a baby.
Helping Vermonters was also a large part of Gloria’s life. She used her mind and skills supporting administration for various state offices and agencies. She thrived on a challenge, including her work for the Vermont Attorney General’s Office and the Vermont Board of Medical Practice. Her last position, prior to retiring early, was as the executive director of the Vermont Board of Medical Practice.
In more recent years, Gloria’s dream was to write novels for teens. She always loved hearing and telling a good story, understanding the power they hold. She spent countless hours reading, researching, and developing ideas. Specifically, Gloria wanted to author books that would be relevant to today’s teens but would also invite them to explore the Vermont she grew up in, at least with regard to the lessons that have been passed down through the generations. In the end, while she didn’t publish novels, her legacy was to write on the hearts of many adults and children, including her own child.
Gloria’s parents, Herbert Levi Graves and Leona Arlene Davis, predeceased her, Herbert in an automobile accident on her seventh birthday. While Gloria loved life, part of her always wanted to be with him again; their reunion on the morning of October 28th must have been incredibly sweet. All but two, Elizabeth Woodmansee and Jessie Graves, of Gloria’s aunts and uncles met her when she, in the words of John Gillespie Magee, Jr., “slipped the surly bonds of earth.” Hilda wrapped her in a hug, Lucile greeted her with a laugh, Gertrude and Irene watched with twinkles in their eyes, and Alfred, Clarence, Roy, Wally, and Robert stood by like Vermonter’s often do, stolidly but with real love. Of course, her sister-in-law, another Gloria Jean, was also there and ready to talk about their girls.
Gloria’s husband, Thomas Hurd, and their daughter, Shannon, continue to hold her in their hearts. Her brothers, Gordon and Gary Graves, also do, along with their families. All told, Gloria’s nine nieces and nephews and thirteen great-nieces and great-nephews live on and will carry different pieces of her with them.
Gloria requested that her service be held at the Grace United Methodist Church in Plainfield, Vermont, and we will gather there at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 4th.
In lieu of flowers and given Gloria’s love of children and reading, donations may be made to either the Katherine Paterson Children’s Room at the Aldrich Library in Barre, VT or the children’s library at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier, VT.
Finally, Gloria’s family wishes to thank the Barre City Fire Department and EMS for their care and professionalism.
