James Edward Buzby, Jr.
....show , age 77, of Eastern Avenue, St. Johnsbury passed away at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehabilitation Center on January 26, 2016, following a period of declining health. He had lived in the area for over thirty years. Jim was born in Brattleboro on February 8, 1938, son to the late James E., Sr. and Myrtle Rosalie (Hunt) Buzby. He was raised and educated in Brattleboro and joined the U.S. Marines, serving for 9 years and honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. Jim worked as a carpenter and later as a case worker for Southern Vermont Community Action. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed watching baseball and golf, and loved putting his carpentry skills to use by working in and around his home. He is survived by his beloved wife of over fifteen years, Mary L. (Noyes) Buzby of St. Johnsbury, six children: Jennifer Buzby, Cora Colebank and Bridget Trulove all of Phoenix, AZ, Julianne Baldwin of New York, James E. Buzby, III and Jeffrey Buzby both of Brattleboro; a brother, Thomas Buzby of Brattleboro and a sister, Joan Dwyer of Nevada and many grand and great-grandchildren. Jim was predeceased by a sister, Shirley Buzby. Services will be private and there will be no calling hours.
Joan Bertolini
....show of St. Johnsbury passed away Saturday evening, Jan. 23, 2016 at the age of 84, surrounded by members of her family. Joan was born in Barre, Vermont on May 20, 1931, the daughter of Wendolyn and Freda (Hill) Beck. Her husband Enso "Bert" passed away two years ago on Jan. 1, 2014. Joan was predeceased by her sister Barbara, brothers Alan and Robert. Joan's surviving brother Norman Beck and his wife Tillie reside in Barre. Joan was a graduate of Spaulding High School and Bryant College. Joan and Bert owned St. Johnsbury Beverage before retiring to Joes Pond in West Danville and Port Charlotte, Florida. After Bert's passing, Joan returned to Vermont full time. Spending Christmas on "The Pond" was one of Joan's dreams, and that dream came true last year. She remarked often that it is one of her most cherished memories. Joan was a voracious reader and spent many hours at the Pope Library in Danville gathering new books, giving reviews, and making recommendations to the librarians there. In fact, the American Flag that is proudly flown over the library was a gift from her family. Joan is survived by four children: Jim Bertolini of Williamstown, Kim Bertolini-Mier, her husband Roger, and their daughter Giovanina of St. Johnsbury; Scott Bertolini and his wife Tonia, their children Matt and Alicia Bertolini, Nate and Ashley Bertolini, and Daniel all of Michigan; Martin Bertolini and wife Kate of Joe's Pond, their children Dylan Bertolini and his partner Courtney Kozlowski of North Danville and daughter Lauren Dow and her husband Warren Dow of Barnet. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren McCoy, Lyla and Lola, along with many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Joan's life is being planned for later in the spring at Joes Pond; burial will be at the Hope Cemetery in Barre. The family wishes to thank Hospice Nurse Carol and Dr. Mary Ready; everyone at Hospice knew how private a person Joan was and treated her with the upmost respect and dignity. Mary R. (Shatney) Berard
....show , age 73, of Old County Road passed away at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehabilitation Center January 20, 2016. Mary was born in Peacham, VT, on July 4, 1942, daughter to the late Elton and Edna (Hutchison) Shatney. As a teenager Mary was the dump attendant for years and worked as a house cleaner most of her life. She also drove school bus for Peacham for several years. She is survived by her daughter Erlene Cassidy and husband, Malcolm, of Danville, sister Florence Gordon of NH, 4 brothers: Roy Shatney of Florida, Norris Shatney and wife Gabby of NH, Ernest Shatney and wife Claire of Peacham and Edward Shatney of Lyndon. Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband Paul. Burial will take place in the Peacham Cemetery at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.
Michael Walter Entriken
....show , 59, of Walden, VT passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at his home. Michael was born on October 11, 1956, in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Walter and Dolores (Laub) Entriken and moved to Vermont in 1970 where he attended Cabot High School and worked with his family's business-Rama Enamels. Michael founded his own business-Green Mountain Enamel Works-and travelled to craft shows throughout the Northeast for over 40 years. He was a lifetime member of the Vermont Hand Crafters. Michael spent 20 years with Northeast Kingdom Human Services as a community integration specialist, providing care for developmentally challenged individuals and forging many long- term friendships. Outside of work, Michael enjoyed snowmobiling, feeding the birds, checking his pasture fences and his annual trip with his wife to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Michael is survived by his wife Carol Entriken and his stepchildren Molly Sutter and her husband Tom of White Plains, NY; Jacob O'Brien and his long time care provider Greg Bryant of Glover, VT; and Luke O'Brien and his wife Kerry of Newark, VT. Michael cherished his role as "Pop Pop" to his three grandchildren Thomas and Zelda Sutter of White Plains NY and Riley O'Brien of Newark, VT. Calling hours will be held Friday, January 15, 2016 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Sayles Funeral Home at 525 Summer St., St. Johnsbury. A celebration of Michael's life will be held in the springtime at a date to be announced. Richard E. Houghton
....show , age70, of St. Johnsbury, passed away at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehabilitation Center Tuesday evening, January 12, 2016, following a period of declining health. Richard was born in Barre, VT, on September 18, 1945, son to Muriel (Jerome) Houghton and the late Cedric Roland Houghton. He was raised and educated in St. Johnsbury graduating from the Academy with the Class of 1966. He married the former Pamela D. Lyndes and shared 21 years together until her passing in 2006. Richard was employed as an assembler with Burndy Manufacturing until his retirement. He went on to work as a security guard with Deter and later as a greeter in Littleton at Walmart. Survivors include his mother, Muriel, of St. Johnsbury, his brother: Leroy Houghton and wife, Sylvia, of St. Johnsbury, his nieces: Kristi Houghton (Todd LaBounty) of Lyndonville, Nikki Arnold (Jason) and their son, Logan, of Madisonville, KY. The family would like to express their thanks for the wonderful care he received at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehabilitation Center from all the staff. Burial services will be held privately for the family in the springtime at the Cabot Cemetery in Cabot, VT. Tammy Maurice
....show of St. Johnsbury died unexpectedly after a brief illness Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016 at the age of 55. Tammy was born in St. Johnsbury on October 25, 1960 to her mother Gloria Berube and father Wayne Bumps. She attended Peacham Academy. Tammy enjoyed camping and picnics with her family. She also loved going fishing. Her grandchildren were "her everything". Christmas was a very special time of the year for her. She was formerly employed at Weidmann. She enjoyed bowling with her mom and daughter. She is survived by her husband Jeff Maurice; her mother Gloria Berube of St. Johnsbury; her father Wayne Bumps of Keene NH, daughter Shannan Smith and husband Johnathan of St. Johnsbury; two step-children: Crista Maurice and Leah Maurice both of Danville; 3 grandchildren: Ivie Carle and Charles Smith both of St. Johnsbury, and Jamieson Maurice of Danville; brother David O'Dell and wife Maryann of St. Johnsbury; mother-in-law Blanche Maurice of Littleton NH; brother-in-law Gary Maurice and wife Marie of Stone Mt., Georgia; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by another brother Roland O'Dell of St. Johnsbury. Tammy Maurice of St. Johnsbury died unexpectedly after a brief illness Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016 at the age of 55. She is also survived by her canine companion Patches. Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Arvid William Odett
....show , age 95, of Shadow Lake Road, Waterford passed away at the Lafayette Center in Franconia, NH, Sunday evening, January 17, 2016, following a long battle with Parkinson's. Arvid was born in Detroit, Michigan, Christmas Day, 1920, son to the late Ernest L. and Edith (Long) Odett. He grew up and was educated in Berkley, MI, graduating high school there in 1938. On April 13, 1941, he married Alberta Dehnke and shared 71 years together until her passing in 2011. During World War II, Arvid served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater and was involved in the battle at Okinawa. When he returned he found employment with Vickers, later Sperry-Rand and Unysis, from which he retired, following the company from Michigan to Massachusetts in 1955 to this area where he made his home in 1982. Arvid was very handy and loved craftwork in many aspects including building a grandfather clock. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger days and bowled in a few leagues. He and Alberta loved to travel, which they did as often as time allowed. During his time in Massachusetts he was a founding member of the Lutheran Church in Westboro, and locally he was a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church in Littleton, NH. His family will always remember him as a great man. Survivors include his six children: Russell Odett and wife Helen of Ft. Gratiot, MI, Christine E. Hardy of Waterford, Lynne Reed and husband Robert of Tehachapi, CA, Kenneth Odett of West Boylston, MA, Marcia Mullen of Sheridan, WY, Daniel Odett of Richford, a brother: Wayne Odett of Southfield, MI, 12 grandchildren, all of his great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Alice Hamilton and two brothers: Leland and Milford. Services and burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.
James Cushman Spencer
....show , age 64, died, Friday, Jan. 8, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family following a lengthy illness. He was born to Conrad Milton Spencer and Mary Emma (Cushman) Spencer on April 6, 1951, in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. He was raised in Lyndonville with his big sister, Mary Kay, and attended the Lyndon Schools, graduating from Lyndon Institute in 1969. During his high school years he excelled in track and was an accomplished skier in Alpine, Nordic, and jumping, earning a ski scholarship to Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado. On August 26, 1972, he married his girlfriend, Judy (Canton) from Whitefield, New Hampshire. Together, they built a house in Lyndonville, and made it a home raising three daughters -- Jessica , Melissa, and Bethany. He is remembered as a kind and adventurous husband and father. Jim worked hard and played hard. After apprenticing with Hebert's Plumbing and Heating he started his own business, Spencer's Plumbing and Heating, which he ran for over 30 years. He was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed all kinds of hunting, fishing, camping and skiing with both family and friends. Jim was a man of many talents and you could often find him working on a project or two in his garage. He was a very generous man and was always lending a helping hand. Jim will be missed by his loving wife of 43 years Judith of Lyndonville, Vt., his daughters Jessica (Spencer) Angell and husband Richard of West Burke, Vt., Melissa Spencer of Lyndonville, Vt., and Bethany (Spencer) North and husband Ryan of West Dover, Vt. Jim adored his four grandchildren, Hannah, Hayden, and Bowden Angell and Spencer North. He is also survived by his sister Mary (Spencer) Guilmette and husband Karl of Largo, Fla. Hazel Louise Taylor
....show , age 83, of Main Street in Lyndonville, VT, passed away at her daughter's home in Lyndonville, VT, early Saturday morning, January 30, 2016, with her family by her side following her battle with cancer. She had been a resident of East St. Johnsbury, VT, for over 40 years until moving in 2013. She was born in Medford, Ma, July 26, 1932, daughter to the late John L. and Mary (LaRiviere) Flood. She was raised and educated in Medford, MA graduating from Medford High School. She married Donald E. Taylor on June 6, 1953 and have shared 63 years together. Hazel worked for Ralph Devereaux at Caledonia Oil in Lyndonville for 17 years as bookkeeper and then continued for the Devereaux Family as personal bookkeeper until she became ill at the end of December. Mimi, as she was known to her youngest generation, enjoyed fishing when she was young, playing cards, crocheting and crafts, going to bingo, and playing cribbage with family and friends. For many years Hazel went with Don who flew remote control planes starting in Massachusetts and later flew them also in Guildhall, VT with the RC Guildhall Flyers. Survivors in addition to her husband, Donald of Lyndonville, include her two children: Joanne M. Palmer (William) of Lyndonville, Donald L. "Duck" Taylor (Debra) of Waterford, 6 grandchildren: Kathryn & Kassandra Bennett, Dale, Daniel & Desiree Taylor, Caity Palmer, 4 great-grandchildren: Mason, Karson, Tenley, Nelson, and her brothers and sisters-in-law: Evelyn Bowen of W. Charleston, VT, Gladys (Bud) Broome of St. Johnsbury, Ira Taylor (Chris) of Salmon, ID, Paul Sawyer ( Jeannie) of S. Windsor, CT, Richard Sawyer (Janice) of Newark, VT, Penny Flood of Sebring, FL, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Wilfred "Willy" J. St. George
....show , age 78, of St. Johnsbury, died Friday morning, Jan. 1, 2016 at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center where he had been a resident since July 2015. He was born on July 4, 1937 in Lowell, Vermont, the third child of Wilfred J. St. George, Sr. and Georgianna (Gadoury) St. George. He was educated in Lowell and Troy schools. Willy was a farmer in the Newport area from 1956 until the 1970's. He was also a heavy equipment operator helping to construct the road to the top of Jay Peak. He owned and operated Willy's Beverage and Redemption Center on Portland St. in St. Johnsbury. Many may remember his cheerful "good morning, my friend" as they stopped in for coffee on their way to work. In 1986 he married the love of his life and soul mate, Alana Clifford and they had 29 happy years of marriage together. In 1991 they started Clean Sweep Chimney Service, a business they truly loved. It meant so much to him to know that he was providing a valuable service and helping others. Willy retired in 2001 but was not one to sit idle. He spent the next several years working at various part-time jobs. In 2007 he and Alana became home providers for the Northeast Kingdom Human Services. Willy was a member of the First Congregational Church in Lyndonville, serving as a member of the Prudential Board, deacon, and on the search committee. He was a life member of the St. Johnsbury Lions Club and a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award, the highest honor a Lion can receive. Willy enjoyed being with his family and friends and had a wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed playing the guitar and harmonica. He was a friend to everyone. Survivors include his wife Alana of The St. Johnsbury House (1207 Main St, Apt. G1 05819); his 6 children, 8 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandsons: Yven St. George and wife Julia of Vergennes; Phil St. George, wife Debra and family Andre and Danielle and Danielle's son Sylar of St. Johnsbury; Martin St. George, wife Krystin and family Astin St. George and Alexis Ingerson of St. Johnsbury; Andre St. George, wife Sarah and family Stephanie McCone and husband Nate, Jessica St. George and her son Jaeden-Pierre of East Tawas, Michigan, Marc St. George and wife Diane also of East Tawas, Michigan; a daughter Monique St. George of Williston. He is also survived by a step-son Duane Drown and his sons Brandon and Rylee of St. Johnsbury; two sisters: Yvette Limoges of Troy, Delia Lemieux and husband Louis of Troy; Alana's sister Barbara Masciangioli of New Britain, Conn.; Alana's brother Bruce Clifford and his wife Nancy of East Hartford, Connecticut; several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased his parents: two brothers Yven and Gaston St. George, and an infant daughter Gisele St. George; a grandson Bentley Wilfred St. George; his in-laws Howard and Beryl Clifford; 4 brothers-in-law law: Roland Limoges, Gary and Duane Clifford and Anthony Masciangioli. Visiting hours will be held in St. Johnsbury at the Sayles Funeral Home Thursday evening, Jan. 7, from 6-8 p.m. The funeral will be held in Lyndonville Friday morning, Jan. 8, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Lyndonville.
