She's was an active member of the Scared Heart Church. She received the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, the eucharist as well as marriage. She attended Sacred Heart School and Lebanon High School. She married Richard J. Avery Sr. on September 1, 1962 and celebrated their 50 year anniversary with their children, grandchildren and many of their wedding party in 2012. They retired two years ago to Ormond Beach FL from Cornish Flat NH.
Her greatest blessings in life were her children and grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she leaves behind Lori Avery and her partner Jay Fountain of Grantham NH, Richard Avery Jr and his wife Kerry of Plymouth MN, Barbara LaBounty & her husband Troy of West Palm Beach FL. Her grandchildren, her pride and joy, Ryan Avery Follensbee & his wife Maryam, Annika and Chase Avery and Ariana LaBounty. Janet was best known in Cornish for her role in promoting skiing. For 16 years she was Chair of the PTO Ski Program. If a child wanted to learn how to ski, she found a way, even if it was from her own pocket. It was well know on Fridays that when the ski bus pulled out of the school yard so did 90 percent of the children. In 1988 she was one of five recipients of the NH School Volunteer Program for her "outstanding volunteer work". Perhaps this is one of her greatest legacies, no matter who was in need, she was always there to help out. She was known to put many miles on her car each year attending her kids and grand kids sporting, school and scouting events.
From 1986 to 2004 she worked at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, many will remember her as the Catering Director, pushing her carts up and down the hallways, setting up for luncheons and dinners. She would often talk about the day she broke her pedometer after walking "only" 15 miles. Janet loved Thomas Kincade, Princess Diana, Cardinals and QVC! She had a great sense of humor and loved a good practical joke, usually shared with her cousin Donnie.
There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Church in Lebanon. Janet’s final resting place will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Lebanon NH. Service dates and times will be published later this summer.

William Johnson Breed
....show , 87, passed away in Lebanon, NH on December 4th 2016 with the love of his life, Judy, by his side.
He was born in Cambridge, MA on October 12th 1929 to Leaverne Kennedy Breed and William Johnson Breed of Marblehead, MA.
Graduating from Marblehead High School in 1947, he completed a postgraduate year at Phillips Andover Academy before enrolling as a freshman at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH in 1948. At Dartmouth, he was an officer at Theta Delta Chi, participated in many extra-curricular clubs, and earned his varsity letter in both lacrosse and hockey. He graduated in 1952 with an AB Degree in business and advertising psychology, and was a member of senior honor society.
A bright entrepreneurial spirit colored many of his adventures at Dartmouth, perhaps none more than the purchase of a school bus to haul him and his classmates to ski areas across the northeast. Though a paying enterprise, the bus was more than a business - it was driven by his love of sport and people, and was indicative of the way he would pursue his life going forward.
After graduation William married Judith Rogers in August of 1952 – a decision he would often refer to as the best of his life. Their 64-year marriage was one of deep and abiding love.
After the wedding, he enlisted in the US Army, serving as an instructor in the 5th division at the Indiantown Gap, PA leadership school. He spent 21 months in Korea as a battalion officer and saw action in North Korea. He served in the reserves until 1958.
After returning from the war, he worked at Simonds Saw and Steel in Fitchburg, MA, Sylvania Lighting Division in Salem, MA, Pocahontas Fuel Company in Salem, MA and then Booma-Breed, Inc. in Swampscott, MA, where he worked alongside his father in the family business.
In 1970, he acquired the Johnson & Dix Fuel Corporation in Springfield, VT. With William T. Wessling as his co-pilot, the business adventure that he thrived on was launched, "J&D" would define his working years. "It is not enough to tell them you are good, you’d better be good".
By the year 2000, he had sat across the table from over 58 small business owners, integrating them into Johnson & Dix ‘s operations. If Bill bought your business, you knew you would get a fair deal. His personal ethic made a difficult and at times intimidating decision process easy – a testament his social skills and integrity.
Johnson & Dix was sold to Irving Oil in 2009. In typical WJB style, the most rewarding part of the business transaction was getting to know Arthur Irving better and touring him around Dartmouth, even encouraging Mr. Irving’s daughter Sarah (class of 2010) to apply. He took each and every opportunity he could to save a young person from Harvard or Yale.
He served on the board of the Petroleum Marketing Association of America from 1992 – 1994. He was Chairman and President of the New England Fuel Institute, and served on many other boards as an officer in various other industry organizations. In 1998 he was honored as one of the "Legends of Oil Heat" by the New England Fuel Institute.
He was a Director of First Twin State Bank in White River Junction, VT from 1985 to 1989, and a Director of United Bank Corp of Rutland from 1987 to 1989. He was a founding Director and Vice-Chairman of Ledyard National Bank in 1991, serving in multiple capacities until 2005.
He served in many civic roles over the years. He was Vice-President of the Marblehead, MA YMCA, Trustee of the Salem Hospital, overseer of the Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover, NH, Trustee of the Montshire Museum, Norwich, VT, Treasurer of the Friends of Hopkins Center at Dartmouth College, member of the Hanover, NH town finance committee from 1976 -1982, Chairman United Way of the Upper Valley 1979-1980, and President of Hanover, NH Rotary Club 1981-1982.
Bill was especially fond of David’s House in Hanover, NH, a home away from home for families of children being treated at the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth (CHAD). He was President of, in his words, "a great group of folks that raised more than enough funds" for the building of a new home on the Dartmouth-Hitchcock campus.
He was actively involved in Dartmouth Alumni activities, including the Dartmouth Alumni Council 1986-1989, Head Agent Class of ‘52 from 1986-1989 and also President / board member of several other Dartmouth Clubs and organizations over the years. In the summer of 2016, He was recognized for his active involvement in his fraternity Theta Delta Chi (which he fondly referred to as the "Boom Boom Lodge"), where served in various advisory roles over the years.
WJB loved to ski on both snow and water. He was a sailor, biker (pedal), hiker, and an earnest - if somewhat overly eager - golfer (a duffed ball resulted in his sprinting off the tee with gusto, much to the amusement of all). He was a founding member of Baker Hill Golf course in New London as well as a member of the Lake Sunapee Yacht Club.
Bill and Judy went on many travel adventures with friends and family, enjoyed shows at the Barn Playhouse in New London, NH, and avidly attended many cultural and sporting events at Dartmouth. Most of all, he appreciated people. He was the embodiment of a "people person", a man who understood that companies, colleges and families were all made of individuals who needed to be appreciated and understood. His dynamic personality, integrity, and enthusiasm touched many lives. Those who knew him were better for it.
William is survived by his wife of 64 years, Judy, his children Debra, Penny, William and David, grandchildren BJ, Kurtis, William, Sarah, Samuel, Ella and Astrid. His Brother George pre-deceased him.
The Breed family would like to extend a special thank you to Laurie Cuccinello of Sutton, NH, who has provided care and comfort for Bill and Judy over the years with dedication and grace – more than we could have hoped for.

Lyme, NH, John Jewell Hartford
....show , San Francisco Bay Area ophthalmologist and Christian conservative, died Friday, October 7. He was 98. John was born June 7, 1918, in Westbourne, Manitoba, Canada, son of American parents Isaac James and Cora Mae (Figge). John graduated with an A.B. (1942) and an M.D. (1945) from U. Kansas, served as 1st Lt. and Capt. M.C., USAAF (1946-48), pursued post-doctoral studies at Harvard (1948-49) and at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (1950), and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Cincinnati General Hospital (1951-52). Eventual Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he established his independent ophthalmology practice in the San Francisco East Bay in 1953, where he continued practicing until his retirement four decades later, with a notable hiatus (1955-56) to serve as a volunteer medical missionary at Christian Medical College, Vellore, Madras State, India, performing more than a thousand eye surgeries in that year alone. In 1958 John met his future wife, Heidi Marie Margaret Froning, in a camera store while at the World’s Fair in Brussels, Belgium. The couple was married in 1961, and ten months later their one child was born, W. Alan Charles, who eventually became a physician as well. John continued to practice ophthalmology in the ensuing years and served on several hospital staffs in the Bay Area, but he also remained passionately devoted to conservative Christian causes, including leadership in the California Republican Assembly, active in Ronald Reagan’s successful bid for governor (1966) and eventual bid for president (1980) – after his election, President Reagan hailed the CRA as the "conscience of the Republican Party." Following this triumph came tragedy: in 1985 Heidi’s life was cut short by metastatic colon cancer. In 1990 John married Carol J. Callouette. He retired from clinical practice and the couple enjoyed an active life, including weekly games of golf with friends, numerous trips abroad, and continued engagement with church and political causes. In early 2016 John joined his son Alan in New Hampshire, where he eventually celebrated his 98th birthday June 7th over a chocolate cake with vanilla icing and raspberries, singing "Happy Birthday" along with his caretaker staff. John passed away in his sleep on October 7th, an hour after having read Matthew 17 with Alan: the Transfiguration of Christ. He is survived by his second wife Carol (age 98), his son Alan (age 54), and his granddaughter Anya (age 4). A memorial ceremony will be held on Tuesday, December 27th, at Sunset View Cemetery, El Cerrito, California. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent in his memory to the Heritage Foundation, Washington, D.C., or to the American Heart Association, Greater Bay Area Office, Oakland, California.
Jinny Kim Hartman
....show of Etna, NH passed away on Wednesday, August 17, 2016.
Jinny was born March 23, 1964 in South Korea, the middle child of Ok Soon Hong and Nam Gyun Kim, both of whom were physicians who came to America ahead of their children in 1966. In 1970 Jinny and her older sister Joyce moved from Korea where they had been living with their grandmother to America to be reunited with their parents in Queens, NY. The following year, her sister Alice was born and the family moved to Dix Hills, NY. Jinny attended school there and excelled in the sciences and enjoyed athletics. She escaped Long Island to attend Wesleyan University. Her college years are memorable for her continuing love of science, dance, and the arts. She took up running and rowing, earning her varsity letter in crew. Following college, Jinny entered Mount Sinai School of Medicine and moved on to a residency in Anesthesiology at The New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center where she met the love of her life, Gregg Hartman, to whom she was married for 22 years. Jinny then joined Gregg as a faculty member, and the following year they started their family. A son, Benjamin, was born in 1995, and a daughter, Madeline (Matti), was born in 1998. In 1999 the Hartmans moved to Etna, NH. Jinny and Gregg joined the faculty of The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and the Department of Anesthesiology at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Their children immediately became part of the Upper Valley community, attending the Ray, Richmond, and Hanover High Schools. Both of them have moved on to Boston for college at Northeastern University where Ben is a third year student and Matti is a freshman.
Jinny will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, and the most supportive friend. There was nothing she enjoyed more than watching her children play ice hockey, or simply witnessing them grow and mature, and with her husband engaging in endless projects and adventures. She was a valued confidante to her many friends and their children, who she enjoyed nurturing as much as she did her own. As a friend described, "whenever you saw Jinny, you knew your day was going to be better by having seen her." She was a creative potter, a scuba diver, a runner, a gourmet cook, and an endless lover of fashion. She will also be remembered as a valued colleague. While working at the Auburn, NY, branch he went to Cayuga Community College to earn his Business Administration degree.
He had very fond memories of his high school band, The Young Generation, which began his lifelong love of rock and roll music. His love of muscle cars began with his first Mustang "Snappy" in 1972, a love that was rekindled after retirement. Ken was an active outdoorsman and enjoyed skiing, snowshoeing, golfing, hiking, and mountain biking. His love of playing golf led Ken back to school to become a certified golf caddie. He caddied at May River Golf Club and Chechessee Creek Club, two very prestigious courses in South Carolina. Ken was an outstanding volunteer. He also volunteered for the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina in many ways, but the one thing he loved most was being Rudolph the Reindeer at the Community Christmas Tree Lighting. He felt so fulfilled volunteering and helping the children, and, of course, you know they loved him too. And it wasn’t just the kids. Ken was well-known as the "go-to guy" in the neighborhood. In 2002, she became the Director of Children and Family Services at WCBH. She held this position until her passing. She also served as the Clinical Supervisor for the Dartmouth Psychology Internship Program and held a faculty position of Clinical Instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.
Throughout her career Michelle was a dedicated and empathetic clinician as well as a respected leader. She received the Unsung Hero Award from the Child Advocacy Center in 2014 for providing long-term leadership. In May 2016, she was due to receive the Margaret M. Riggs Distinguished Contribution Award from the New Hampshire Psychological Association for the psychologist demonstrating extraordinary skills in teaching, research, or service.
Michelle’s premature death cannot undo what she accomplished in life. She changed the lives of more people than we may ever know. Michelle dedicated her life to counseling children who were victims of trauma. For many years she was an active collaborator with the Dartmouth Trauma Interventions Research Center and helped bring trauma-focused evidence-based practices to community mental health. Michelle also served as the mental health representative to the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) of Grafton and Sullivan Counties Case Review Team and Advisory Board which facilitated the provision of assistance for families in crisis.
In work as in life, she will be remembered for her compassion, kindness, intelligence, and dry wit. She could communicate her thoughts with a single look or wry smile. She would counsel and guide others with such subtlety and thoughtfulness that the mantra of her friends and colleagues in times of crisis became "what would Michelle do?" Her time here was too short, but her impact and memory will last forever – in the lives of her family, friends, and the children she has helped.
Michelle was preceded in death by her grandparents Pearl and Harvey Antonelli of Silt, Colorado. She is survived by her devoted husband John Parsons of Grantham, NH and her beautiful daughter Olivia, as well as her loving parents Robert and Norma Rice of Huntington Beach, California, her sister Tricia Wood and brother-in-law Richard Wood of Newton, Massachusetts, and her nephews Henry and Matthew Wood and Spencer Parsons. She is also survived by her loving family through marriage, her parents-in-law Robert and Gail Parsons of Sunapee New Hampshire, her brother-in-law Dr. Michael Parsons and his wife Katelyn Randall and their children Spencer Parsons and Sylvia Randall Munoz of Portland, Oregon.

She became a young grandmother at the age of 39. For her 40th birthday, John bought her a grocery store in Enfield, NH, which became Russels Variety Store; she’d always wanted to run her own business. Lebanon, NH - Nellie Louise (Dexter) Russell
....show , 96, passed away in the comfort of her home on Tuesday October 6, 2016. She was born at home on December 2nd 1919 at 5 o’clock in the morning to William Dexter and Caroline (McCollem) Dexter of Lebanon, NH. Nellie’s mother "Carrie" always told Nellie she kept her up all night in labor and that it was snowing.
Nellie grew up in Lebanon, NH. At the foot of Slayton Hill, she went to the school house on Mascoma St. Ext. then to the old junior high in Lebanon, which at that time was the Lebanon high school. Nellie graduated in 1938, and always thought so much of her classmates. While Nellie was in high school, at the young age of 15, she and her close friend Rita sometimes would have to walk home from school together. They would walk down Mascoma Street, seeing they both lived in the direction. One day as the two teenage girls were walking by 37 Mascoma Street, there stood this "tall, thin, good looking young man," outside with his big black chow dog. The girls stopped to talk for a minute, seeing Nellies friend Rita knew the young man. Apparently the young man’s mother was friendly with Rita’s mother, and the two women had always wanted to set the two up! Well, that never happened! The young man was a 17 year old named Romeo Joseph Russell and Nellie Dexter stole his heart that day. Soon after Romeo and his friends started picking Nellie up from school in "The Flying Yankee", which was an old bomber car that the boys named after a train that became very popular at the time. Nellie said the principal had a "fit" and contacted her father William Dexter to demand that he stopped the boys from picking Nellie up from school. Nellies father did NOT mind Romeo picking Nellie up. William loved Romeo and thought of him as if he was the son he had always wanted.
Throughout Nellie and Romeo’s later teen years, they both worked with Nellies father cleaning, painting, and wallpapering for families and different business’ throughout Lebanon. During these teen years Romeo had heard that just about all of the Lebanon Firemen had quit the Department. He ran right over, along with other teen boys and volunteered to do whatever the department needed. The Fire Department became a huge part of something so very special to both Nellie and Romeo for the rest of their lives.
Romeo had also taken a job at the Woolen Mill on Mechanic Street in Lebanon, while Nellie continued to work for different families in town providing cleaning, cooking/baking, and a great deal of babysitting. Nellie absolutely adored and loved children. During Nellie’s long homemaking career she became very good friends with Jack and Elinor O’Connell and their 3 children, Mary Ellen, Ginny, and Jackie Jr. Mary Ellen the oldest, was just a small little girl when Nellie and Romeo were welcomed into the O’Connell’s family, Mary Ellen would become a very important woman in Nellies life.
Romeo and Nellie Courted for 5 years before getting married on May 25, 1940, at the old Sacred Heart Church that in 1940 was located on School Street in Lebanon, where Ricker Funeral Home is today. Romeo’s parents wanted the newlyweds to live at their home on Mascoma Street. Romeos father, Arthur wasn’t well. He suffered with Parkinson’s disease, and offered the young couple the entire upstairs of the house and made it into their own apartment. Just a few short years later, Nellies father William passed away. Then Romeo’s father soon passed. Romeo’s mother still lived downstairs from Nellie and Romeo. Nellie’s mother became ill for a brief time, so they decided to move Caroline in with them and they lived very happily with both mother’s in the same house.
Romeo took a job with the Lebanon School District working as a custodian, bus driver, and later a Security Guard, until he retired at 94 years old! Nellie found a job at the old Mary Hitchcock Hospital as one of the Housekeeping Supervisors for 15 years and retired in 1982.
Throughout all of their early years, and even well up into their 70’s, Nellie and Romeo loved being around people, their friends, all the special events, vacations, road trips (not planned) they both belonged to many groups and clubs. Nellie was very much involved with the Hartford Emblem Club #150 VT. Nellie served as the club’s President and later as the Press Secretary for years. Nellie also belonged to the Catholic Daughters, Social Committee, and Martha’s Ministries through Sacred Heart Parish. Nellie volunteered many, many hours for the American Red Cross, Lebanon Senior Center, the APD Auxiliary, and the Lebanon Fire Department Auxiliary. Nellie loved to knit, she often knitted hats, booties, blankets and clothing then donated all the items to the local hospitals for the newborn babies. Nellie was very well known as "the Pie Lady", which had also been brought up along with all of her community worked when Nellie was named Lebanon’s Citizen of the year in 2010. Nellie loved to entertain and joke. She was very well known for her hilarious jokes and great sense of humor. Nellie truly loved spending time with her friends and loved ones.
All the Fireman Convention’s, gatherings, cookouts, card parties, vacationing, and volunteering. Some people wonder how she had time to do all this, Nellie was a firecracker that just NEVER stopped moving, a woman that exercised daily well into her 90’s, she never would let Romeo sit too long, she’d have him doing laps around the house, just to keep him moving and going.
Very sadly a couple of years after Romeo finally retired at 94 years old, he was struggling with Dementia, and his body had just given out. Romeo passed July 10, 2013 at his beloved home that he was born in. With his bride right by his side, for all 73 years of marriage and 78 years together. Nellie was heartbroken of course, but she kept trooping on as she always did. A woman made not like many others that had struggled herself with having to live with debilitating macular degeneration, which left her legally blind. Nellie still lived alone in her big house, took care of all her affairs with help from Health Care Aid Carrie Pushee for 10 years, her family Paul and Steve Hamel, and two close friends Anna Yeager and William Pillsbury.
As Nellie was approaching her 97th birthday this December, she had a massive stroke September 28, 2016. This strong willed, stubborn Irish woman suffered for 8 days and was able to pass away at home where she desperately wanted to be. Now joined with her beloved husband Romeo dancing together in heaven forever.
Nellie’s survivors include Steve and Dee Hamel of Orford NH, Paul and Dottie Hamel of Enfield, Doris Hamel of Enfield, two cousins Rachael Bergeron and Carman Thibodeau both of Lebanon, along with many nieces, nephews, and an abundant amount of loving friends.
Family and friends are invited to the Ricker Funeral Home & Crematory in Lebanon on Wednesday October 12, 2016 from 6 to 8 pm for calling hours. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Church in Lebanon on Thursday October 13, 2016 at 10 am. A reception will follow after the burial back at the church all are welcome.
