Robert Leonard Hall
....show , 77, died peacefully on December 14, 2015, from natural causes at the Boston VA Hospital.
He was born on January 17, 1938, in Akron, Ohio, a son of Frances and Leonard Hall.
As requested by Mr. Hall, cremation took place and there will be no services. After his younger years of schooling in Akron, he followed in his mother's footsteps, buying and selling real estate. They jointly purchased the island in Island Pond.
After being drafted out of Akron University into the Army in 1961, and discharged in 1963, he resided on the island during the summer months, enjoying the solitude of the island, where he lived without the creature comforts of electricity, telephone, or running water.
On November 7, 1977, he was confined to a wheelchair from a logging accident that broke his back. Being a true Vermonter at heart, he did not allow it to slow him down, and he took up residence on another of his properties, a farm in Derby. He continued with his real estate and other various enterprises, including a greenhouse business and apartment rentals.
He was skilled as a small engine mechanic. One of his greatest pleasures in life came from acquiring a broken piece of machinery and restoring it to functioning capacity. This avocation benefited many of his friends who came to him with various broken pieces of equipment that Mr. Hall would fix.
They will remember his many conversational snippets that were as entertaining to guests as to him. Paul Joseph Letourneau
....show , 88, of Derby, died on December 16, 2015, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on March 6, 1927, in Holland, a son of Napoleon and Albertine (Ouimette) Letourneau.
He met the love of his life, Rhina Piette. He swept her off her feet and married her on September 13, 1947. She predeceased him on December 18, 1978.
He was loved by so many people. In 1947, he lived in Holland with his wife and children. Then in 1957, he bought a farm in Derby. They then moved to Troy in 1967 on the Colburn Farm and lived there until 1972, when their daughter Lillian and son-in-law Raymond took over the farm.
In 1972, after a long discussion about his wife wanting a dance hall and Mr. Letourneau wanting a sugarhouse, they decided to compromise and build both in one. That is how Paul's Sugarhouse and Dance Hall was born. The couple held dances on Saturday nights for many years. He also catered weddings, banquets, and meetings and gatherings of all kinds for any occasion.
Mr. Letourneau loved gardening. He had a beautiful blueberry patch that he enjoyed, and he had one of the longest and biggest gardens that he was so proud of. Every day he was in that garden weeding and raking or just sitting on his bench in the shade enjoying watching his crop grow.
His most prized possession and greatest pleasure of all were his woods. He found peace and serenity in his sugar woods. Every day he would be up there cutting up trees that fell over or trees that were dead. He would cut them down for sugar wood or firewood. His woods were clean and so easy to walk through.
Most of all, he loved the wildlife that he would see daily. Whether it was a deer or turkeys, it brought him happiness to see them visiting him. Sugaring season was another enjoyment in his life. He enjoyed teaching his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren how to unroll pipeline and tap trees to get the sweet taste of maple.
Mr. Letourneau also enjoyed seeing his friends at Tuesday night bingo hosted by the Derby Lions Club. Everyone knew him for his famous maple baked beans, his coleslaw, and his famous burgers. He enjoyed talking and joking with everyone. He always had a twinkle in his baby blue eyes. He loved visiting and picking on his friends over at Walt's Sales and Service. In the summer months, he loved spending time at the rendezvous (the family campground, parking lot at Paul's Sugarhouse), and spending time with family from all over. He found great joy sitting down with his grandchildren and sharing his stories of growing up as a child and most of all, sharing the secrets and stories of his woods throughout his life. Not only sharing stories, but he also loved to get a rise out of his grandchildren. He loved to hear them all laugh. He also enjoyed going out for breakfast at Brenda's or The Brown Cow with his daughter Jane, family, and friends.
He was a lifetime member of the Elks Club, the Lions Club, and the Vermont Maple Sugar Makers Association.
He is survived by his children: Linda Letourneau of Floresville, Texas, Linn and Dave Elko of Newport, Richard Letourneau and his significant other, Julie Chase, of Derby Line, Marie Chapman of Derby Line, Jane and Larry Snider of Derby, Leo Letourneau and his companion, Debbie Welch, of Newport Center, Lillian and Raymond Bathalon of Troy, and Pauline and Jacques Couture of Westfield; 27 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Cecile Fortin of Holland; his brothers: Andre and his wife, Delores, of East Charleston, Joseph and his wife, Delia, of Derby, Laurent and his wife, Alicia, of Derby, and Philip and his wife, Barb, of Derby Line; by sisters- and brothers-in-law: Theresa Girourd of Washington, Priscilla Fortin of Newport, Lionel Fortin and his wife, Simone, of Holland, Marcel Piette and his wife, Rita, of Irasburg, Sylva Piette of Newport, Andrew Royer and his wife, Annette, of Derby; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife; by his parents, Napoleon and Albertine (Ouimette) Letourneau; by his in-laws Clarence and Annie Piette; by his sisters: Simone Piette, Theresa Fortin and her husband, Albert; by his grandson John Bathalon; and by his brothers- and sisters-in-law: Toni, Pierre, Leon and his wife, Solange, Reginald and his wife, Delorese, George and Germaine Fontaine, Bertha Royer, John Fortin, Roger Girouard, and Henry Fortin.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 21, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newport with the celebration of a Mass. Interment followed at St. Edward's Cemetery in Derby Line.

Sybil Mary Space Gibson
....show , 92, died on November 22, 2015. She left her Sunriver, Oregon, home of four decades as dawn broke, with her family around her. After 92 fulfilling years, she is with Jesus and reunited with her late husband, Bob. Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Victor Applegate Space and Mildred Knowlton Space on April 16, 1923, she grew up in the New Jersey community of Glen Rock, graduating from Ridgewood High School in 1940. It was the heart of the Great Depression, but home life was rich. She played in the woods behind their Dutch colonial home with her three siblings, and they ran down to meet their father coming home on the train from Manhattan. Mrs. Gibson enrolled at the New Jersey College for Women, part of Rutgers University, and with the war effort in full force, joined the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). After graduating with a bachelor's degree in home economics in 1944, she was commissioned as lieutenant, junior grade. One of her more interesting duties was to work in the communications facility in Washington, D.C., decoding enemy communications, a task that earned her the National Defense Service Medal. While an instructor at the Navy War College, in Newport, Rhode Island, she met the love of her life, Navy Commander Robert C. Gibson, whom she married in Glen Rock, New Jersey, on June 18, 1955. At that time, a woman's military career ended when married, and for the next phase of her life, she became a wonderful life partner to Mr. Gibson and mother to her three children, John, Craig, and Catherine. Navy life moved them to Washington, D.C., then to San Diego, California, back to Newport, Rhode Island, then to Honolulu (where she caught the 'aloha' spirit, and Hawaii became her second home), then to the Philippine Islands, Virginia Beach, and McLean, Virginia.Mr. Gibson retired as captain in the Navy in 1973, and one of the unwritten rules of marrying an Oregonian came into effect. Yes, if one marries someone from Oregon, one must expect eventually to live in the Beaver State, and in 1974, the family moved to the fledgling resort community of Sunriver, population 67. That is where Mrs. Gibson shone as she helped incubate organizations that are now integral for making Sunriver the vibrant community it is. Thirsting for culture, she was a founding member of the Sunriver Music Festival, and served as its president for three years. Her Christian faith being paramount, she helped start not one, but two churches in the 1970s, the Sunriver Community Church (now the Community Bible Fellowship), and the Sunriver Christian Fellowship, serving in leadership positions in both, and enjoying singing soprano in the choir.
