Two prospects from the U.S. Ski Team were killed in an avalanche Monday while skiing near their European training base in the Austrian Alps.
The team said Ronnie Berlack, 20, and Bryce Astle
....show , 19, died in the incident near the Rettenbach glacier in the mountains over Soelden, the venue for the annual season-opening World Cup races.
Berlack, from Franconia, New Hampshire, and Astle, from Sandy, Utah, were part of a group of six skiers who were descending from the 3,056-meter Gaislachkogel when they left the prepared slope and apparently set off the avalanche. The other four skied out of the slide and escaped unhurt.
Officials in the Tyrolean region said an avalanche alert had been declared for the area after days of heavy snowfall and mild temperatures.
"Ronnie and Bryce were both outstanding ski racers who were passionate about their sport — both on the race course and skiing the mountain," U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association President and CEO Tiger Shaw said. "Our hearts go out to the Berlack and Astle families, as well as to their extended sport family. Both of them loved what they did and conveyed that to those around them."
The tragedy has left the U.S. Ski Team "in shock," Alpine director Patrick Riml told The Associated Press in Croatia, Zagreb, where the American slalom team was preparing for a World Cup race on Tuesday.
Head coach Sascha Rearick left Zagreb shortly after being informed and traveled back to Austria to be with the so-called development team Berlack and Astle were part of.
Riml said the athletes were free to decide whether they still wanted to compete in Tuesday's night race, adding the team planned to wear mourning bands.
"We are all very close," said Riml, an Austrian who was born and grew up in Soelden. "We train a lot in Park City. We'll see how they handle the whole thing and how they react."
Riml added "it's a shock for everybody. Two great boys, great athletes, good skiers. They were fun to have around. We are all in shock, still. It's very tragic."
Berlack and Astle were part of a group of 10 skiers on the development team who gained experience in the Europa Cup and were preparing to race on the top-level World Cup.
"They all have the potential (to be on the World Cup)," Riml said. "These two boys were among the other eight boys who are our future. We believed in these guys, that's why we selected them."
Berlack was a member of the Franconia Ski Club who recently trained at Vermont's Burke Mountain Academy. He had earned a spot on the development team in 2013 and finished 11th in downhill and 17th in super-G at the National championships that year in Squaw Valley.
Berlack grew up in Franconia, the small town in the White Mountains that also produced U.S., world and Olympic champion Bode Miller. Rich Smith, program director at the Franconia Ski Club, said he had known Berlack since he was 7.
"There's not enough words to say what a great guy Ronnie Berlack was and always will be," Smith said.
In a statement, Burke Mountain Academy said it was devastated by Berlack's death. His father, Steve Berlack, is a coach at the academy. His mother, Cindy, is also a ski coach.
"Only last week Ronnie was here at BMA training with us," the school said. "Ronnie was someone we all loved and deeply respected. He had a huge spirit. There is no one who better represents our core values than Ronnie. Our hearts go out to his parents Steve and Cindy, and his sister Carolyn."
At the Dec. 5 World Cup downhill in Beaver Creek, Berlack was one of the five forerunners, who test a course before the actual race starts. Berlack was also set to be a forerunner during the world championships on the same course next month, U.S ski team spokeswoman Megan Harrod told the AP.
Astle was invited to train with the development team this season after strong early season results, including two top-10 results at NorAm Cup races last month in Canada.
"He was hoping ... to be in the next Olympics, that was his goal," his mother Laura Astle said, "and he was pretty much on his way."

William Joel Bly
....show , 68 - January 5, 1948 – August 28, 2016, "Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for a while and leave footprints on our hearts and we are never, ever the same." (Flavia Weedn)
William "Bill" Joel Bly, a lifelong Vermonter and lover of running, skiing, and maple syrup, passed away on August 28, 2016 in Belleville, Arkansas. Although his life ended unexpectedly, he lived and loved life fully with humor and enthusiasm infectious to everyone he met.
Born in Newport, Vermont to the late Edward and Thelma Bly, Bill and his three sisters grew up raising Holstein cattle on a dairy farm in East Charleston. No stranger to hard work, he helped manage the farm, attended Derby Academy, and ran track and cross country, where he set and held numerous records. After graduating, he pursued his interest in electronics by attending Vermont Technical College, married his high school sweetheart, Bonnie, and then enlisted and served in the Navy for six years as an electronics technician. While serving, son Scott and daughter Kristy were born and his Navy travels landed them in Puerto Rico, where the sand met the sea and friends became family. Nearing the end of the Vietnam War, he moved his family back to Vermont, welcomed the arrival of daughter Rae-Anne, and began a nearly 20 year electronics career working for Motorola until starting his own company, Bly Communications.
Despite choosing a career outside of farming, Bill remained a country farm boy at heart. With his keen carpentry skills, he built two beautiful homes in which to raise his family, large vegetable gardens, and a menagerie of cats, sheep, horses, and a miniature donkey named "Beau". He and his friend BJ boiled sap to keep his maple syrup "habit" alive and after the maple trees were tragically lost in an ice storm, he began keeping bees for honey, which in true character he affectionately called "bee barf".
Although he made horrible Cream of Wheat in his childhood years, he became a really good cook as an adult to fuel his love of food. From elaborate breakfast bowls of "berries, nuts, and twigs" and chock-full omelets to vegetable stir-fry's and grilled salmon, his creations were always mouth-watering. His true food love, however, were sweets. He lived for desserts: his mother's pies (fruit, chocolate, whoopee – you name it he ate it), his sister's cookies, Rae-Anne's tarts, anything with maple syrup – or that could serve as a maple syrup delivery device, and his beloved Ben and Jerry's ice cream.
Sugar highs in combination with Bill's naturally energetic nature and sense of humor made him a really fun person to be around. He worked hard and played hard, although often worked more than he played. He loved music and dancing and excelled at downhill skiing, tennis, and running. He was an avid runner who completed many marathons, including the Boston Marathon at age 60. He maintained the weight lifting routine he established in the Navy and would do any outside activity any time of the year. After satisfying his daily "endorphin fix", he would relax by watching football (go Patriots!) and napping on the couch. Sundays were his favorite day to unwind and spend time with family.
In his late 50s the tides of change welcomed a new family into his life. He and wife Myra lived in South Hero, Vermont for a number of years until he retired. Thereafter, they moved to a small town in Arkansas to enjoy a peaceful life gardening, swimming, and spending time with Myra's daughters and granddaughter for the remainder of his life. Bill may not have lived to be an old man as we all had hoped for, but he lived life fully. He loved. He was caring and generous. His footprints are on our hearts and his spirit will live on through each of the lives he touched.
Bill is survived by wife, Myra J. Bly of Belleville, Ar.; his children: Scott (Dawn) Bly of Seattle, Wa.; Kristy Bly (Seth Carbonari) of Columbia Falls, Mt.; Rae-Anne (Keith) LaCroix of Moretown, Vt.; step-children Shauna Kitchens of Belleville, Ak. and Chelsea (Kasey) Baker of Heavener, Ok.; his siblings, Valerie (Ernie) Spring of Hanover, Ma.; Beverly (Verne) Devereux of Barton, Vt.; and Sherry (John) Clarke of Hartland, Vt.; grandchildren: Nate Bly and Luke and Lydia LaCroix, along with step-grandchild Lillian Baker; former wife Bonnie Farrow, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of William Joel Bly will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at the Hillside Cemetery on Church Hill Road in East Charleston, Vermont. Following the service is a reception at Beverly and Verne Devereux's home at 2719 Willoughby Lake Road in Barton, Vermont.
In lieu of flowers, please share your favorite memories, go for a run through the woods, ski some moguls, or toast Bill with a sip of maple syrup.

STOWE -- Author, skier, Vermont native, Stuart Duncan Campbell
....show , Stu passed away on Dec. 4, 2008, at his home in Stowe after a 20 year battle with cancer. He was 65.
Known throughout the skiing world, Campbell fashioned a career from his own understated elegance, both on skis and with his ability to put words to the act of gliding on snow.
He grew up skiing in Bennington and was a 4-event ski racer (slalom, giant slalom, cross-country, ski jumping) while a student at Middlebury College. He graduated from Middlebury in 1964, with a B.A. in American Literature and received his master's degree in English Literature from the University of Vermont in 1972.
Campbell taught English Literature and coached skiing at Harwood Union High School and at the Valley Junior Racing Club from 1967-69 before settling in Stowe as Technical Director of the Sepp Ruschp Ski School. Campbell moved from Stowe to Heavenly Valley, Calif., in the late 1970s, where he served as Director of Skier Services. He oversaw Heavenly's ski school, other skier services and a very active race department that hosted World Cup, professional and celebrity ski races. He spent more than a dozen winters at Heavenly (though during that time he continued to spend his summers, writing, in Stowe). He returned to Stowe full time in 1997, and led the development, construction and opening of The Country Club of Vermont, pursuing his late-in-life passion for the sport of golf.
Campbell's extraordinary grasp of the technical elements of skiing and ski teaching led him to positions with the Professional Ski Instructors of America as a Demonstration Team member, as co-chairman of the Technical Committee and as an examiner with PSIA's Eastern division.
But it was as a writer for Ski Magazine that Campbell mentored the greatest number of skiers. He served as Technical and Instruction Editor at Ski from the mid 1970s until his death, penning everything from illustrated quick tips to feature articles. "The Art of Skiing," Campbell wrote in 1991, "is, ultimately, the search for sensation." He encouraged the reader to use his skis "like a draftsman's compass" to scribe arcs on snow. He saw skis as "tools for sculpting space on the tilt."
Campbell also wrote ski instruction books, including "Ski With the Big Boys," "The Way to Ski," and, with Tim Petrick, "Good Things to Know about Gliding on Snow."
Some of his Vermont neighbors knew him best for his books on gardening and alternative house design, including 1975's "Let it Rot!," which helped start the home composting movement, and "The Underground House Book" (1980). Campbell and his wife Carol West- Campbell lived for 28 years in a radically earth-bermed house in Stowe.
In September, the Vermont Ski Museum awarded Campbell the first Paul Robbins Ski Journalism Award for "lifetime commitment to ski journalism with ethics, humor and good taste..." He told the gathering at the museum to "get up on the mountain and make lots and lots and lots of turns. Every turn you make is good for the soul."
He leaves behind his wife of 23years, Carol West; his mother Helen L. Campbell of Stowe; his brother Alan and his wife Heidi of Huntington; his daughter Cricket Kadoch and her husband Aaron of Bend, Ore., and his son Gregory of Waterbury; along with two grandsons, Aiden Jacob Duncan and Joshua Stuart Asher; three nephews, Mason, Abbott and Owen Rachampbell; and an aunt Virginia Thomas of Bakersfield.

Ruth Taylor Clapper
....show , 96, of East Charleston, VT, passed away on May 30th, 2016 at her family's longtime cottage on Echo Lake in her beloved state of Vermont. She was surrounded by the love of her two daughters as was her wish.
She was born on August 17th, 1919 in North Fork, Nebraska to J.D Taylor and Edna (Gibson) Taylor and spent her early life on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota (on horse back of course).
Her school years were spent in Bellows Falls, VT where she was embraced by a large caring extended family. Ruth excelled in sports, music, and academics.
Her father was against his daughter going to college, so Miss Ruth Taylor attended business school. Meanwhile our irate aunt confronted him insisting that he send Ruth to Middlebury College. As a result, her three siblings also graduated from college.
When Ruth graduated from Middlebury College with a Bachelor of Arts degree, she began teaching. In Oklahoma, on February 28th, 1942, she married her college sweetheart, Charles Myron Clapper of Newport, VT. Charles died in 2000 after 58 years of marriage.
After WWII (which changed many things she said) the family moved to Woodstown, NJ. When her daughters were in school, Ruth began her 21 years of teaching French at Woodstown High School.
In addition to teaching, she was a long term Girl Scout leader and an extremely active member of the Asbury Methodist Church of Woodstown. For many years, Ruth was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels and a driving force for the American Field Service Foreign exchange student organization.
Mrs. Clapper loved playing cards and belonged to several Bridge Clubs. She enjoyed learning new information, reading, doing crossword puzzles and gardening.
Charles and Ruth played golf, bowled, traveled, and were "die hard" Flyers and Bruins fans, along with Patriot football fans. Both of my parents were formidable defenders and knowledgeable "referees".
This knowledge transferred over to Five grandchildren and Ten great grandchildren's sports events and community activities. In fact, if a car was going anywhere, Ruth was in it.
Ruth Clapper is survived by her two daughters, Bonnie Hopkins of East Charleston, VT, and Becky Spear of Fairbanks, Alaska. Her five grandchildren, John Hopkins Jr. of Augusta, GA, Derek D. Hopkins of Deerfield, NH, Scott C. Hopkins of Indianapolis, IN, Tarik Wm Spear of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Darrah Lea Fitzpatrick of Fairbanks, Alaska.
She is loved by numerous great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and her remaining sister, Leila Taylor Baggett of Keystone Heights, FL, and her sister-in-law, Kjellrum Taylor of Litchfield Park, AZ.
She was predeceased by her sister, Phyllis Taylor, and her Brother, Lt Col. David D. Taylor who was 92 years old.
Rest in Peace Bema and Gram.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Memorial donations should be sent to where our father, mother and I received excellent and convenient healthcare for seven decades. It was administered by the: Island Pond Health Center, P.O Box 425, Island Pond, VT 05846.

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — John Curran
....show , an award-winning journalist for The Associated Press who covered stories from Miss America pageants to the Gulf oil spill to recent devastating flooding in Vermont, where he served as the news cooperative's news leader, died Saturday. He was 54.
The husband and father of three was stricken with an apparent heart attack while mowing the lawn at his Montpelier home, said his brother, Robert Curran Jr.
Curran's AP career spanned more than two decades and earned him numerous awards for his feature, sports and profile writing. He wrote about the sacrifice of Vermont's National Guard in recent wars and documented the saga of a moose named Pete, who became a cause celebre over wildlife regulation.
He was the first journalist to write about the New Hampshire community that carefully guarded the privacy of J.D. Salinger even after the author's death. Just weeks ago, he boarded an ATV to navigate around flood waters to tell the stories and capture the images of those whose homes and livelihoods were destroyed after the remnants of Hurricane Irene severed access to some Vermont communities.
"John's death is a stunning loss to all who knew and worked with him," said Karen Testa, the AP's editor for the East region. "He was widely regarded as one of the most gifted writers, a tireless journalist whose attention to detail made his work so compelling to read. He was a mentor to young reporters and leaves a legacy of colleagues across the country who learned to be better journalists by working with him and learning from him."
The son of longtime Buffalo News columnist Bob Curran, John Curran graduated from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, N.Y., studying journalism. He went to work for the Niagara Gazette, later joining the AP in Charleston in 1989. He transferred to Boston in 1993 and a year later was promoted to Atlantic City, where he covered crime, politics, the Miss America pageant and Donald Trump's casinos. He was named AP's news leader in Vermont in 2006.
Curran was born in New York City and raised in the Buffalo area. He graduated from high school in Amherst, N.Y., in 1975 and was admitted to the United States Military Academy Preparatory School at Fort Monmouth, N.J., where students prepare for attendance the following year at the academy at West Point, N.Y.
He had planned to play basketball at West Point, but was injured in a motorcycle accident and served instead as an enlisted man in the U.S. Army, his brother said. He got his start in journalism writing for Army newspapers.
He is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters. Services were incomplete late Saturday.

Anna Dewdney
....show , a best-selling children's author known for her "Llama Llama" stories, has died, according to The Associated Press. She was 50.
Dewdney had been battling brain cancer for the past 15 months. A spokeswoman for the publisher Penguin Young Readers said the author died Sept. 3 at her home in Chester, Vermont.
She started her career as an illustrator while holding various jobs including working as a waitress and a mail carrier. She illustrated many children’s books including “The Peppermint Race” by Dian Curtis Regan. She found success in 2005 with her book “Llama, Llama Red Pajama.” She wrote and illustrated the book. The funny story was about a baby llama who had trouble going to sleep at bedtime. The book was critically acclaimed and a New York Times best-seller.
The series now features more than 10 titles and has sold more than 10 million copies combined. Her "Llama Llama" series is being adapted into a children's television series that Netflix plans to release in 2017.
Dewdney was an advocate for children’s literacy, and she wrote an opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal in 2013. She wrote, “When we read with a child, we are doing so much more than teaching him to read or instilling in her a love of language. We are doing something that I believe is just as powerful, and it is something that we are losing as a culture: by reading with a child, we are teaching that child to be human.”
Her publisher, Jen Loja, president of Penguin Young Readers, said, “The entire Penguin Young Readers family is heartbroken. And as we grieve, we also celebrate Anna’s life, in dedicating ourselves to carrying forward her mission of putting books into as many little hands as possible. We will miss her so, but consider ourselves so lucky to be her publishing family and her partner in her legacy.”
Dewdney requested that, instead of a funeral service, people read to a child. She is survived by her partner, Reed Duncan, and two grown daughters.

Winston would have preferred that we start this with one of his bad jokes. He loved making the people around him laugh, even if it ended with a shocked "Oh Winston."
Winston Eddy Dowland
....show , 74, of Holland, VT. passed from this earth on January 2, 2017. He was one of those people that loved family and country, and the legacy of his love and service is long and impressive.
Born on June 20, 1942 in Derby Line to Bernard and Gertrude (Sanborn) Dowland, he was one of 7 children.
In 1958, he joined the Navy and began his lifelong service to, and pride in, this great country. Winston served during the Cuban Missile Crisis, on the ship enforcing the missile blockage. He did five tours in Vietnam, and served on the submarine base in Pearl Harbor. In 1878, he retired from the Navy, with an Honorable Discharge as a Petty Chief Officer, having been awarded many medals for his service. He entered the reserves for another 10 years, for a total of 30 years service in the Navy.
In his civilian life he worked for several different companies, and opened his own successful welding business, where he created and sold the pattern for his dumpster and quad track designs. However, he never stopped serving his country, his state, or his town.
He was a member of the VFW Post #798, the Newport Elks #2155, the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #22 where he was instrumental in getting the transportation vans for local veterans needing rides to the VA hospital in White River. He also served the DAV as Commander, Chaplin, Treasurer, Adjutant, and Service Officer. His volunteerism spanned over 20 years. He served his great state of Vermont as a State Representative from 2004-2006, and he served his hometown of Holland on the Select Board for many years.
But for all of the service he gave his country, state, and town, it was his family that gave him the most enjoyment. He married his loving wife, Heather (Dawber) in 1992, and for over 24 years spent every day together, working, serving, and spending time with family.
Winston loved taking his nieces and nephews on trips around the United States, and because he loved history, they learned history. He loved big family get togethers with lots of laughter, and children running around. He was a history buff, but kept current on new technologies through various periodicals. He enjoyed his daily paper, and talking politics with anyone who would listen. He enjoyed telling those politically incorrect jokes, and getting a reaction. He loved seeing the snow on the trees after a storm. He lived with integrity, and a fierce respect for this country, and he had a huge heart for those he loved. Winston was one of the good guys, and he leaves behind a huge family and a multitude of friends that know it, and will miss him.
He is survived by his wife, Heather Dowland of Holland, Vt., by his children Lisa King, and her husband Lenny, Lori Groleau and her husband Pierre, and David Dowland and his wife Lara, by his grandchildren, Melissa King, Daniel and Patrick Groleau, and Quinn Dowland, by his brothers and sisters Vickie Tear, George Dowland, Philip Dowland and his wife Rosie, Eddie Dowland, and his wife Doreen, and Rocky Dowland, by his brother and sister in laws, Sherry and Brian Montminy, and Stacy and Wade Wright, and very special nieces and nephews Brian and Christie Montminy, Ashley Montminy and Justin St. Pierre, Addie and Tanner Atwood, and Wade and Amber Wright, Scott Dowland, and many other nieces and nephews. He was predeased by his sister Louise Simino and her husband Rollin, brother Bernie Dowland, and brother in law Brian Tear.
We bet Winston would love us to end with one of his jokes too, but we are sure you can remember one of he told you. Even more, we are sure those who knew and loved him know how he impacted our lives, and want to honor him through our own service to others.

WHITEFIELD - Dorothy Jeannine Gardner (Emerson)
....show beloved wife of Ronald A Gardner. Jeannine went home to be with the Lord, whom she loved and served, following a brief illness on June 29, 2016. She was born in Geneva, New York on August 2, 1933, the daughter of Ralph W. and Viola E. (Furness) Emerson.
She later graduated from Owego Free Academy, Owego, NY in 1950 after attending her first three years of high school at Newport High School in Newport, Vermont. On April 8, 1951, she married her high school sweetheart and life-long best friend, Ronald A. Gardner, who predeceased her on September 15, 2009.
To them were born four children, Dana R Gardner (wife Karen) of Tiverton, RI; Ronni Jean Fedele, who predeceased Jeannine on October 30, 2002; Laurie L Gardner (significant other Peter Kramer) of Reading, MA; and Glenn R Gardner (wife Lori Jo) of Littleton, NH.
She was blessed with 8 grandchildren whom she loved and prayed for; Heather Gardner, Andrea Kegelman, Jaclyn Paglia, Aaron Ward, Allison Fulford, Isaac Gardner, Cassady Hantz, and Reannan Young. Jeannine also enjoyed her 8 great-grandchildren; Brian Bourquez, Mia Buonarosa, Ronni Brynn Kegelman, Aaden Ward, Logan Ward, Chase Belisle, Emerson Fulford, and Garrett Cole; and would eagerly await updates of each one of them.
She is also survived by two sisters, Sherill Marciano (husband John) of Ramona, CA and Maryon Lopez of San Diego, CA. She was predeceased by another sister, Luann Harding of Caballo, NM.
Jean, as she was known to many, was an L.P.N. having graduated from Household Nursing Association School of Practical Nursing in Boston, MA in 1955. She later earned her Associates Degree in Nursing from Vermont College in 1987. An accomplishment of which she and her entire family were quite proud. She worked in various hospitals in MA, NY, TX, and VT and finished her career employed at Orleans and Northern Essex Home Health Agency of Newport, VT.
Among her many interests and passions, Jean was an avid reader. Right up until her death she would always have one and most often two different fiction novels, biographies, or historical narratives together with her cherished Bible under her purview. She was smart, well read and taught each of her children and several of her grand-children the joy of reading.
She also had a keen interest in both live theater and the cinema. She fondly recalled when she was a young girl her mother, Viola, and she would sneak away from the rest of the family for Saturday matinees at the local movie house. She often spoke of those times as amongst her most favorite. Later on, her daughter Ronni Jean started a tradition that stands to this day of taking Jean to the Weathervane Theater to celebrate her birthday. After Ronni's passing, daughter Laurie willingly and happily carried on. She would always be so excited when the new schedule would come out each year as she would ponder which shows she would want to see and would be eager to share them with all of her family. Jean enjoyed acting herself and participated in drama and theater in her younger years.
In her own words, her greatest enjoyment was time she spent with her family and friends. Her deepest wish for them was that they might come to know Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord as she did and so to have an assurance of meeting together in heaven in His presence where she now awaits. She was an active member of the Whitefield Baptist Church, Whitefield, NH.
Arrangements are being managed by Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster, NH. A celebration of life and memorial service will be held Saturday, August 6, 2016, at 11:00 am at the Whitefield Baptist Church with Pastor Greg Vigne officiating. Interment will take place at the Derby Center Cemetery in Derby, VT at a date to be determined by the family.
While Jean loved flowers and particularly her colorful annuals, the family has asked that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to either the Whitefield Baptist Church or The Weathervane Theater in her memory.
