Ronald Baker McKenny
....show , 75, died on July 25, 2014, in Newport, following a long illness.
Son of Gordon and Dorothy (Baker) McKenny, he was born in Newport on October 30, 1938, and attended Newport schools. Upon graduation in 1956, he attended Tilton School, Mitchell College and the University of Vermont before joining the Vermont Air National Guard in 1962. After his training, he joined the two-family business of CS Emery & Company, Customs Brokers on the northern Vermont border.
In 1964, he married Sandra L. Haselton and they raised their family in Newport, where they lived together for most of their 49-year marriage.
Mr. McKenny was probably the longest continuous member of the Newport Country Club (NCC), from 1952 to 2013.
He was a young teenager when he began his lifelong love/hate relationship with the game of golf. As an adult, he served on the NCC board of directors and as president during the clubhouse reconstruction in 1993. He was honored in 2010, when they named him to NCC’s honor roll.
One of his favorite days of the year was the NCC Family Day, an annual golf tournament that was played every July Fourth. The original McKenny Team grew to an extended group of 15 to 20 “family” members over the years. He enjoyed the countless hours organizing the group, making sure that each of the family teams was balanced and fair.
In addition to being a golfer, he loved a great book and was a voracious reader. He read several novels each week and had previously been a trustee and board of director president of the Goodrich Memorial Library in Newport for many years.
He was an avid and devoted Red Sox fan, going as far as listening to games on the radio while fishing and then later finishing up watching it at home on television after the fish were caught (or not!). Throughout his life he alternately cheered and lamented their annual journey toward the pennant race.
He possessed a great sense of humor and unique style of writing. He wrote many letters and later e-mails to newspapers, friends and family, always open and honest with a flair that was enjoyed by all.
Family was of utmost importance to him. Some of the highlights of his later life were the visits from his twin granddaughters. When they weren’t badgering him to read to them, they were beating him at cards. Rummy was a particular favorite. Annual trips with family and lifelong friends to the Wells Beach area of Maine for lobsters and steamers was the highlight of every summer, and was a tradition that he always looked forward to.
Upon Mr. McKenny’s retirement in 1993, he and his wife spent their winter months in Vero Beach, Florida, making many new friends, and enjoying the sunshine and new golf partners.
He is survived by his wife Sandra; his daughters: Heather Menard and her wife, Sara LaBarre, of Milton, and Alicia Hanrahan and her husband, Doug, and their children: Serena and Bailey of Randolph; his brother Douglas McKenny and his wife, Sara, of Newport Town; his sister-in-law Jean McKenny of Derby; as well as by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, and his brother Stanley McKenny.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 30, at 11 a.m., at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, at 4670 Darling Hill Road in Newport, with the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating.

Raymond "Ray Sears" A. Sears Sr.
....show of Knoxville, Tennessee, retired U.S. Marine Corps Colonel, died on July 3, 2014.
He was the essence of a Tennessee Volunteer, and a loyal and trusted friend, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He was a "Ramblin' Wreck," dyed-in-the-wool U.S. Marine, and always the challenger who asked for more and better, whenever and wherever it was needed.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on August 29, 1928, Mr. Sears never quite lost his New York attitude. His mother, Margaret Callahan Sears, was first generation Irish and his father, Andrew M. Sears, hailed from Brooklyn. As a master plumber, Andrew’s work took him from New York to Birmingham, Alabama, where he was recruited to work in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on the Manhattan Project. Margaret also worked in the facility while Ray and his sister, Marilyn I. Sears, attended Oak Ridge High School (1944-1948).
His nickname was "Red" on the high school football team. His father, mother, and sister pre-deceased him.
Directly after graduating from Oak Ridge High School in 1946, at the age 17, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and began a 42-year career where he earned several medals: the Good Conduct Medal, the Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal, in service to his country.
He attended the Georgia Institute of Technology and graduated in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering.
He was the project manager for the A6E-Intruder when he worked at Grumman Aircraft on Long Island, New York. Over the years, he worked on the F18, A10 and other jets at various corporations. In 1993, he retired from General Electric in Knoxville.
His commitment to volunteering as coach, Bingo caller, chaperone, genealogist for his family and also as a researcher for the East Tennessee Historical Society exemplified his generous spirit of giving. He is known throughout the state of Tennessee as a gifted genealogist serving as assistant editor of Tennessee Ancestors and researching contributor to First Families of Tennessee. The latest genealogical goal he achieved was the completion of his own Sears family tree, proving ancestry back to the American Revolutionary War.
He is survived by his wife Helen Keough Sears; his children: Patricia M. Sears and her husband, Steven Mason, Andrea C. Winter and her husband, Michael, Marilyn A. Swyers and her husband, Peter, Raymond A. Sears Jr., and his wife, Karla, and Timothy F. Sears and his wife, Kimberley, and their mother, Kathryn C. Sears; his grandchildren: Michael Claudio, Lauren Claudio, Justin Mason, Courtney Miernicki and her husband, Christopher, Sarah Swyers Parker and her husbamd, Brett, Melissa Pischl and her husband, Dan, Caitlin Winter, Zachary Winter, Matthew Sears, Timothy Winter, Riley Sears, Mallory Sears, Rhys Sears, Andrew Sears, and Liam Sears; his great-grandchildren: Christopher Miernicki III, Lucas Pischl, Michael Miernicki, and Eleanor Parker; Helen’s children: William S. Weathers Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth, Frank E. Weathers and his wife, Julienne, and Katherine G. Weathers; Helen’s grandchildren: Martin Weathers, Nathan Weathers, Emily Weathers, and Scott Weathers; and his sisters-in-law: Peggy Reich, Mary Whittemore and her husband, Terry, and Frances Guy and her husband, James.
Extremely patriotic in thought, word and deed, he requested his burial at East Tennessee Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Knoxville.
While the world is different with Ray Sears passing away, through his family and friends there is a legacy of so many who have been touched and whose lives will carry on his spirit and his energy. Semper Fi.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the East Tennessee Historical Society, P.O. Box 1629, Knoxville, Tennessee 37901, or to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, Random Station Building 2, Suite 320, 290 King of Prussia Road, Random, Pennsylvania 19087

Leonard M. Sogoloff
....show , the owner and founder of “Lennie’s on the Turnpike,” the iconic North Shore, Massachusetts, jazz club that introduced Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Buddy Rich, and an aspiring young comic named Jay Leno to local audiences, died on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Devereux House in Marblehead, Massachusetts. He was 90.
He was the beloved husband of the late Barbara Ann (Raby) Sogoloff, with whom he shared 37 years of marriage.
Born in Peabody, Massachusetts, he was son of the late Samuel and Sonia (Sandler) Sogoloff, immigrants from Russia. He attended Peabody schools and was a graduate of Peabody High School Class of 1941. He briefly studied art at Boston University, before enlisting in the Army. He proudly served his country during World War II, attaining the rank of private first class. He was honorably discharged on April 1, 1946.
He returned home to Peabody, and became a record salesman for Columbia Records. In 1951, he joined a friend, to open The Turnpike Club, a roadside bar on Route 1 North in West Peabody, Massachusetts. From a young age, he had a passion for jazz. He stocked the jukebox with the hottest artists of the era.
Two years later, he bought out his partner, renamed the venue “Lennie’s on the Turnpike, A Jazz Listening Room,” and introduced live music. Over the years, he brought the bespoke greatest names in jazz to the North Shore. The club became a destination, drawing audiences from throughout greater Boston, Massachusetts. The club operated until its closing in September of 1972.
Later, Mr. Sogoloff branched out by booking acts of other musical genres, such as America, Linda Rondstadt, and Bette Midler assisted by a piano player named Barry Manilow, as well as comedians such as Rodney Dangerfield and Flip Wilson.
In 1972, he hired Jay Leno, who lived in Andover, Massachusetts, to be his house comedian. It was the start of a long friendship. In 2009, as he prepared to step down as host of The Tonight Show, Mr. Leno performed at the Salem State University Speaker Series, at a benefit to raise money for a scholarship in memory of Barbara Ann Sogoloff. The event raised $100,000 for a scholarship, which now funds endowments in each of their names.
Mr. Sogoloff had previously donated his photographs and memorabilia from the club to be archived by Salem State University. He later received an honorary doctoral degree from Salem State University for enriching the cultural life of the North Shore.
After his club closed, Mr. Sogoloff worked as the manager of Empire Clothing Co. store in downtown Salem, Massachusetts, for over 20 years.
