Stanwood Bray Churchill
....show , DVM, of Orleans died on June 11, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on October 16, 1926, in Whitefield, New Hampshire, the son of Florence (Bray) and Benjamin S. Churchill.
He grew up in Whitefield, helping his parents run The Churchill Inn. After graduating high school, he attended Dartmouth College for a semester before enlisting in the Air Force during World War II. After serving two enlistments, one of which included being a member of the 691st Army Air Force Band, he returned home to finish his history degree from Dartmouth College.
On September 7, 1950, he married his sweetheart, Eleanor Hunt.
He attended the University of New Hampshire and then applied for admission to veterinary school at Cornell University, and graduated with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in 1957. Upon graduation, he and his wife moved to the Northeast Kingdom to set up his practice and raise their sons.
Mr. Churchill treated both large and small animals in his practice, which covered four counties, two states, and the occasional excursion into Quebec. In 1987, he downsized and began treating small animals only. Due to hi-tech regulations he chose retirement over computerization in 2012. During these years he also acquired many hobbies, which included disappearing overnight in 1960 and returning home with his first standard bred racehorse, Addison Hanover. For the next 36 years he bred, raised, raced and drove his beloved standard breeds from New York to Maine and Canada at the fairs and raceways. He and his childhood friend, John Simons Jr., went into partnership creating Vermont Farms, a business that owned two dairy farms one in Brownington and one in Barton.
In addition to his full-time practice, horses, family, and friendships, he found time to be a chairman of the Lake Region Union School Board during its inception, a director of the Howard Bank, a stockholder and director of the Orleans County Fair, a longstanding member of the square dance club, North Country Swingers, a Mason, a member of the American Legion Post #23, a volunteer for the American Cancer Society Road to Recovery, a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Vermont Veterinary Medical Association, and a member of the Orleans Federated Church.
A creature of habit, he could be found every day having his morning cup of coffee around town and reading his newspapers in order to be up-to-date on the standings of his cherished New England sports teams. He frequented the local library and he rarely missed listening or watching his sports teams play. He looked forward to Sunday breakfast with his family and enjoyed all family gatherings. His kindness and dry sense of humor will be greatly missed by many.
He is survived by his family: Benjamin S. Churchill of Barton, George S. Churchill and his wife, Robyn, of Barton, and Terese Churchill of Barton; his grandchildren: George and Maggie Churchill of Alaska; and by his close friends: Maurice and Polly Bouchard, Amy Curtis, the Simons family including John, Dave, Kim and Bill, and Kim Brooks and Steve Vance.
He was predeceased by his wife Eleanor Hunt Churchill; and by his parents, Florence and Benjamin Churchill.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 18, at 11 a.m., at the Orleans Federated Church, with a private interment to be held at a later date.

Georgette (Patient) Hackett
....show , died in the early morning hours of June 10, 2014, after a long illness.
Born on April 6, 1928, in St. Elie dOrford, Quebec, she was the oldest daughter of a large French-Canadian family. As was the custom in those days, oftentimes the eldest stayed home to help care for siblings. She left school in the third grade to help her mother, who was blind, becoming a caregiver at an early age. She was proud that despite little formal education, her resourcefulness and desire to learn enabled her to read and write not only in French, but later also in English. Her level of competence was even more special for her because she was self-taught. You could often hear her say, Not bad for someone who didnt make it through third grade!
She went on to marry Raymond Richard. They lived in border towns for several years, until moving to Orleans in 1958. He predeceased her in 1964 at the young age of 40, leaving her with three children to care for on her own. These children and their families survive her: Rejean and his wife, Francoise, of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Marie Flood and her husband, Larry, of Lyndon, and Gilles, and his wife, Kim, of Lyndonville. This family provided her with five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, all who gave her great pleasure and of whom she was most proud: Karine Wilcox, and her daughter, Ashley; Melanie Richard; Shelly Noyes and her husband, Ryan, and their children: Delaney and Lucas; Jason Flood, and his wife, Sarah, and their children: Kaleah and Rowen, with another daughter expected on September 26, 2014; and Raymond Richard and his wife, Hannah, and their son, Tucker.
Later in life, she married Earl Buck Hackett, who predeceased her in 2011. After his retirement, they traveled to warmer parts of this country in the winters and returned to Vermont for the summers. They enjoyed their travels and the new friends they made along the way, many of whom still keep in touch to this day.
She was predeceased by all of her siblings with the exception of one sister, Marthe Filion, who resides in Manchester, New Hampshire. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, too numerous to mention, who were very fond of ma tante Georgette. Many weekends were spent with extended family, forming a tight bond that is difficult to replicate today.
She was a very outgoing person who loved to socialize and entertain. She was strong-willed and determined. These traits served her well, but often frustrated those around her. These strengths, however, enabled her to navigate her oftentimes arduous life with the courage and strength she needed to push forward. Bingo and card games were her passion and these games helped keep her mind sharp until the end of her days.
At her request, there will be no services. We ask that you remember her with your prayers and fond memories; perhaps a particular event will cross your mind that will bring a smile to your face. Anyone wishing to make contributions in her memory could forward them to Caledonia Home Health and Hospice, Attention Hospice, Sherman Drive, St. Johnsbury, Vermont 05819.
