Arnold R. Uttin
....show , 78, of Barton, VT passed away on June 26, 2014 in Glover, VT. He was born on August 25, 1935 in Irasburg, VT, the third child of Artie and Esther (Paye) Uttin.
Arnold moved to Barton, VT in 1940 and received his education at Barton Academy and Graded School. Throughout his lifetime he also took adult education classes along with correspondence courses, selecting subjects he enjoyed.
He was a licensed Amateur Radio Operator, a hobby which enabled him the opportunity to communicate with people around the world as well as with people in space vehicles.
Arnold enjoyed work and adapted well to any task he did.
He is survived by numerous cousins and a wide circle of friends. He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters. It is his wish to be cremated with no services. Interment will be in the family lot in Welcome O. Brown Cemetery in Barton, VT.
Maurice T. Audet
....show , 89, of Troy, VT passed away peacefully on June 25, 2014 in Newport, VT. He was born on March 7, 1925 in Compton, Quebec to Josephat and Alma (Gilbert) Audet. In 1947 he married Claire Cote who predeceased him on May 19, 2010.
During his lifetime Maurice worked at the Blair Veneer Mill in North Troy, He also worked at Jay Peak for 8 years, farmed in Westfield for 10 years and retired from Columbia Forest Products.
He and Claire enjoyed playing cards, bingo, going on trips with community circle, enjoyed gardening, attending senior meal sights in Troy and Westfield and North Troy. Their family was the most important part of their lives.
He is survived by his children: Noella Berthiaume and her husband Richard of North Troy, VT, Roger Audet and his wife Rita of Westfield, VT, Diane Roberts and her husband Andre of Troy, VT, Carmen Bouchard and her husband Jacques of Troy, VT, and Rejean Audet and his wife Rebecca of Newcastle, NH. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Vicky , Jennifer, Roger, Jr , Jean , Robert , Denis, Patrick, Jessica, Johanna, Nicholas, Jonathan (Bobby), Claire, and Teddy. He is also survived by 17 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by 6 brothers and 2 sisters. Winston Lee Shafe
....show , 61, of Newport, VT passed away on June 23, 2014 in Newport. He was born January 9, 1953 to Frederick and Irene (Varnese) Shafe. He graduated from North Country Union High School in the class of 1971. He worked for several area people including Dick Scott on the Bluff Road farm. He enjoyed watching westerns on TV and taking care of his cats. He also enjoyed collecting Coca-Cola memorabilia.
Winston is survived by his brothers: Bill Clothier of Sandy Springs, GA, Herb Shafe and Reginald Shafe both of Newport, VT. He is also survived by his nephews and niece : Scott, Frederick, and Derek Shafe and Irene Oriani. He was predeceased by two brothers Wayne and Lionel Shafe. Committal services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Friday June 27, 2014 at the Derby Center Cemetery with Rev. Fred Barker officiating. Lori Stratton
....show of Newport passed away peacefully at her home in the early morning hours of June 20th, 2014 after a valiant, courageous five-year battle with cancer. Lori was born on March 14, 1959, the daughter of William (Bill) and Gwendolyn (Sally) Blake. Lori grew up in Orleans and graduated from Lake Region Union High School in 1977.
Lori possessed an indomitable positive spirit that cancer could not take away. Lori dearly loved her family and friends, and she was a joy to spend time with. She touched the lives of many and she will be greatly missed.
On July 27, 1996 Lori married Kelly Stratton, who survives her. Additional survivors include her son, Seth Cartee, her beloved grandbabies, Landyn, Bentley and Mekenna, her sister Vicki Strobridge and her husband Roger; her brother, William (Bill) Blake and his wife Gloria. Brother-in-law Monte Stratton, sisters-in-law Becky Ladouceur and her husband Craig and Heidi Stratton. Lori is also survived by several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
For 20-plus years Lori worked at North Country Hospital in Newport where she developed a network of valued co-workers and friends she lovingly referred to as her “hospital family.” Lori also had a loving circle of friends from near and far, including those in her “Jasper’s Family”.
In honoring Lori’s wishes, there will be no services. There will be a Celebration of Life at Jasper’s Tavern in Newport on Saturday, June 28th beginning at 1 p.m. Lori wanted family and friends to gather to remember her, the good times spent together and the happy memories made. She wanted family and friends to remember her love and know that she’s left a little piece of her heart with everyone.

....show , 59, of Orleans, VT passed away suddenly on June 19, 2014 at his home in Orleans, VT. He was born September 21, 1954 in Newport, VT to Grosvenor and Lucille (Crandall) Drown.
Brent was a part time cook at McDonald’s Restaurant in Derby, VT. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, fishing, doing cross word puzzles and buying lottery cards. He enjoyed working and seeing people.
He is survived by his children: Joshua Drown and his wife Alice of Orleans, VT, Erin McGee and her partner Steve of Enosburg, VT, and Deveney Wolfe and her husband Mike of Ohio. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Avery, Amelia, Isaiah, Zeke, Zoe, Benny, and Paulina; by his brother Brian Drown of Barton, VT and by his sister Bonnie Bousquet and her husband Lou of Brownington, VT, and Florida, and by 1 niece and 1 nephew.

Arvid M. Deuse
....show , 97, of Derby, VT passed away suddenly on June 18, 2014 at his home. He was born May 7, 1917 in Chester, CT to Eldon and Alfreda (Lund) Deuse. On January 25, 1943 he married Dorothy Julia Brooks who predeceased him November 9, 2009.
Arvid entered the U.S. Army and was a veteran of WW11. He was a machinist for M.S. Brooks & Son in Chester, CT. During his lifetime he was very interested in antique engines. He loved his dogs and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He also enjoyed sight seeing.
He is survived by his children: Virginia Ziemba and her husband Richard of Tenn, Thomas Deuse and his wife Marcia of Ivoryton, CT, and Sally Nedobity and her husband Frank of Derby, VT. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Richard Mislick and his companion Summer Brunelle, Shelly Spurgeon and her husband Carl, Thomas A. Deuse, Tamara Fahey and her husband Brian, Frank A. Nedobity, and Paul Nedobity and by several great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. He is survived by his brother Morton Deuse of CA. He was predeceased by his brother Daniel and his sister Roselyn. Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Thomas H. McConville
....show , 69, of Lake Road, Newport Center, VT passed away at the Veterans Hospital in White River Junction, VT on June 17, 2014.
He was born November 26, 1944 in Chicago, Illinois to James and Edna (Condon) McConville. On November 13, 1989 he married Jadwiga Wojdat who survives him.
He was a high school graduate and received an Associates degree in Chicago, Illinois. Tom was a Vietnam veteran and obtained the rank of Sergeant First Class while serving his second tour.
Tom was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Chicago, a past member of the American Legion in Bloomington, IL and a member of the Disabled Veterans Association.
He was a great historian. He loved reading history of WW11 and the Cival War. He was very patriotic, loved his country, wildlife and being outdoors. Tom loved life and didn’t waste a moment.
He is survived by his wife Jadwiga McConville of Newport Center, VT, by his stepson-Jaromir Baykowski of Poland, his step daughter Malgosia Baykowski and her friend Christian of Montreal, Que and by his grandchildren: Ewa, Katie and Alexandre all of Montreal, Quebec; and by his special friends, John and Karen Stevens of Newport Center, VT; Harmon Olmstead, George “Little G” Azur, Sherry Provencher, and Sue Prue all of Newport, Vt.

Roger Norbert Lamothe
....show , 79, of Derby, VT, passed away on June 14, 2014 in Newport, VT. He was born August 21, 1934 in Newport to Ernest and Florence (Blair) Lamothe. On October 27, 1956 he married Joyce Galipeau who predeceased him. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Newport and from St. Michael’s College in Winooski, VT with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science.
Roger was an executive with Travelers Insurance Co, of Hartford, CT, for 30 years.
Roger loved spending time with good friends, caring for his family, and was very devoted to his faith. He was loved for his generous heart and wonderful sense of humor.
He is survived by his children: Gregory Lamothe and his wife Shawna of Lake Oswego, OR, Judith Lamothe of Simsbury, CT, and Cynthia O’Laughlin and her husband Kelly of Simsbury, CT. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, and by two sisters: Anita Salmon of Maine, and Theresa Goulet of Newport, VT and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers: Roland, Maurice and Rudolph.

Betty (Elizabeth, Lizzie) Madeline MASSON (Filby)
....show passed away peacefully among family on June 13, 2014 in Newport, VT. She was born in Ochre River, Manitoba on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1922. She was the daughter of Julia Filby Degroff Lepla) (1891-1968) and Robert James Filby (1877-1947), who emigrated to Canada from Belgium and England respectively. Betty’s mother, Julia, was one of 18 children who came to Canada to settle and farm.
Her mother and father had eight children. She is predeceased by Cecil, Murray, Renee (Meunier),Norman, and Bill. Her sister Amelia died at birth and her brother, Roy died at age 41 in train yard accident.
Betty graduated from Ochre River high school, and afterward joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in Mossbank, Saskatchewan, where she met her husband, Sgt. James Masson. They were married on News Year Eve, 1943 at the United Church in Ochre River, Manitoba and enjoyed over 70 years of married life together.
Following World War II, they moved to McAdam, New Brunswick, where her husband was employed with the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1968, they moved to Sherbrooke, Quebec for a short period of time and later to Newport, Vermont, where the family settled for over 40 years.
During her lifetime, Betty worked in the retail industry. She was active member of the Baptist church serving as treasurer, educational supply coordinator and choir member. Additionally, she was a member of the Community Circle and Forever Young Club.
She enjoyed sports, especially badminton, curling, dancing and bowling. She was a member of the Stansted Border Curling and Ayres Cliff (Quebec) Club as well as Newport (Vermont) bowling leagues. She enjoyed playing card games, especially Skipboo and Uker, and cherished this special time with her grown up children, grandchildren and friends.
She loved gardening and her children benefitted from fresh vegetables and berries, as well as home baked breads. Her other interests included crocheting, knitting quilting, and sewing. She was proud of her quilt making and continued to create quilts throughout her lifetime.
She is survived by her children, Marlene (Angus Dalley), Lawrence and Robert (Bob) (Betty AnnYetter), five grandchildren, Robert Masson (wife Arla), Andrew Dalley (wife Cecilia), Jennifer Masson (husband Rick Morin), Michael Dalley (wife Alana) and Darlene Masson (husband Patrick Haugwitz), and 11 great grandchildren, Hunter and Kaitlyn Masson (Robert), Maeve and Lydia Dalley (Andrew), Christopher, Riley and Gabriel Morin (Jennifer) and Baron and Stuart Dalley (Michael) and Alex and Sophie Haugwitz (Darlene).
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday June 19, 2014 at the East Main Street Baptist Church in Newport with the Rev. David Lisner officiating. Stanwood Bray Churchill DVM

He was born on October 16th 1926 in Whitefield, NH, the son of Florence (Bray) and Benjamin S Churchill. He grew up in Whitefield NH helping his parents run The Churchill Inn. After graduating high school, he attended Dartmouth College for a semester before enlisting in the Air Force during World War II. After serving two enlistments, one which included being a member of the 691st Army Air Force Band, he returned home to finish his history degree from Dartmouth College. On September 7th 1950 he married his sweetheart, Eleanor Hunt. He attended the University of New Hampshire and then applied for admission to veterinary school at Cornell University, and graduated with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1957. Upon graduation he and Eleanor moved to the Northeast Kingdom to set up his practice and raise their sons. Stan treated both large and small animals in his practice which covered 4 counties, 2 states and the occasional excursion into Quebec. In 1987 he downsized and began treating small animals only. Due to hi-tech regulations he chose retirement over computerization in 2012. During these years he also acquired many hobbies, which included disappearing overnight in 1960 and returning home with his first standardbred racehorse, Addison Hanover. For the next 36 years he bred, raised, raced and drove his beloved standardbreds from New York to Maine and Canada at the fairs and raceways. He and his childhood friend, John Simons Jr, went into partnership creating Vermont Farms a business which owned two dairy farms, one in Brownington and one in Barton. In addition to his full time practice, horses, family and friendships, he found time to be a Chairman of the Lake Region School Board during its inception, a Director of the Howard Bank, a stockholder and director of the Orleans County Fair, a longstanding member of the square dance club North Country Swingers, a Mason, a member of the American Legion Post 23, a volunteer for the American Cancer Society Road to Recovery, a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Vermont Veterinary Medical Association and a member of the Orleans Federated Church. A creature of habit he could be found every day having his morning cup of coffee around town and reading his newspapers in order to be up-to-date on the standings of his cherished New England sports teams. He frequented the local library and he rarely missed listening or watching his sports teams play. He looked forward to Sunday breakfast with his family and enjoyed all family gatherings. His kindness and dry sense of humor will be greatly missed by many.
He is survived his family, Benjamin S Churchill of Barton VT, George S Churchill and his wife Robyn of Barton VT, Terese Churchill of Barton VT, his grandchildren, George and Maggie Churchill of Alaska, and his close friends Maurice and Polly Bouchard, Amy Curtis, the Simons Family: John, Dave, Kim and Bill; Kim Brooks and Steve Vance. He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor Hunt Churchill and his parents, Florence and Benjamin Churchill.

Richard Francis Catani
....show , 86, of Newport VT passed away peacefully Tuesday June 10th 2014. Richard was born in Athol MA Feb 22nd 1928. He is the son of the late Ricardo Catani and Marguerite (Diricco) Catani. Richard was the brother to seven siblings, and was the oldest son. He is survived by brother Frank Catani (Kingston MA) and sister Sandra Catani (Framingham MA). Pre-deceased siblings include Joseph Catani, Gloria Carbone, Marguerite Carbone, Anita Seaman, and Marion Ablondi.
Beloved father of the late Victoria Marie Catani, and survived by Peggy Catani Rea and son-in-law Salvatore Rea of Doylestown PA, Therese Catani-Brock of Plainville MA, and David S. Catani of Atlanta GA.
Richard is the grandfather of the late Tara Rae Keefe, daughter of Victoria. Surviving grandchildren include Jennifer Pecor and Katlyn Santoro of Doylestown PA, Christopher Catani and Zachary Brock of Attleboro MA, Stephen Catani of Lebanon NH, and Crystal Catani of Phoenix AZ.
Richard is also the great grandfather of Benjamin Santoro of Doylestown PA.
He is also survived by the mother of his children, former wife Carol Catani Thebarge of Charlestown NH.
He resided in Newport VT for the last 45 years and is survived by his lifetime companion Bernice Campbell. He is also survived by her children, all of Newport VT: Peter Campbell (Sheila Taylor), David Campbell (Nancy Baker), Bob and Joan Green, David and Janice Urie, Jim and Kim Campbell, Bart and Karen Bacon, and several grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by the late Tyler Green, son of Bob and Joan Green.
At the age of 17, Richard enlisted in the US Navy and was a WWII veteran. He was an Iron Men/SeaBee serving on the USS Rupertas and completed his service with seven months in Normandy. After an honorable discharge he served as an Operations Engineer and became an established welder and Journeyman’s pipefitter in the US Plumbers and Pipefitters covering throughout the United States and Canada. Richard contributed to significant projects, including work at IBM, nuclear power plants and the construction of all of Route 91 from start to finish. He and his son David were lucky to have worked alongside each other for several years.
Richard enjoyed more than 20 years of retirement. Some of his greatest passions were enjoying nature, living on Lake Memphremagog, fishing, boating, skiing, golfing, gardening, reading, traveling, photography, doing puzzles. He was an avid sports fan and loved especially the Red Sox. He also enjoyed politics and playing Power Ball.
He was a wonderful father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He extended a kindness and touched so many lives along his way.
Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon on Monday June 16, 2014 at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home.
Viola "Gigi" Karlovich
....show passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at the age of 86. Viola was born in Richmond, Quebec on April 10, 1928 to Romeo and Laura-Marie Leblanc Poirier.
She immigrated to the United States when she was 18 and began working as a VNA which she did till her retirement in 1988. She was married May 31, 1947 to Leonard Karlovich who passed away in September of 1989. She lived in Bridgeport, CT until 1993 when she moved to Newport, VT.
She is survived by her eldest daughter Marie Lucie Miskimen of Newport, VT; her son Larry and his wife Mary Karlovich of Sanford, North Carolina; and her son Donald Joseph Karlovich and his wife Karen Karlovich of Jay, VT and her children Allan Bartelson Jr. and Erica Bartelson. She is also survived by her granddaughters: Susan Miskimen of North Troy and her partner Lawrence Harmon; Donna Baker the widow of Dennis Dillon and wife of Paul Baker of Newport, VT; and grandson Jay J. Miskimen also of Newport, VT; Dana and her husband Peyton Spicer of Southern Pine, North Carolina; and Stephanie Karlovich also of Sanford, North Carolina. Amongst 5 generations of grandchildren and great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild, nieces and nephews and cousins.

David D. Johnson
....show , 73, of Newport, VT passed away on June 8, 2014, surrounded by his family in Lebanon, NH. He was born September 4, 1940 in Hardwick, VT to Donald and Dorothy (Spaulding) Johnson. On June 26, 1982 he married Constance Cook who survives him.
He worked at IBM for 27 years in the Microchip division as an engineer tech. More recently he was custodian for Craftsbury School and the United Church of Newport. He was in the National Guard for 17 years. He loved the Red Sox and enjoyed watching the various members of his family as they grew up and participated in many different activities. Dave and Connie made several trips to the coast of Maine. He was one of the first to be inducted into the Orleans-Essex Sports Hall Of Fame. He loved being with his family especially his grandchildren.

George E. Starr, Sr
....show , 59, of Wabash, Indiana, formerly of North Troy, VT, passed away suddenly on June 7, 2014 in Largo, Indiana. He was born on April 28, 1955 in Newport, VT to Rejane (Martel) Starr and Urban Starr, Sr. He attended North Country Union High School where he was a member of the Ski Team and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1974. George was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone. His family meant a great deal to him although he was not near, he always kept family close to his heart. His joys in life were spending time with his kids and grandkids. George was a truck driver all of his life. During the summer months he enjoyed spending time at the camp ground with friends and riding his motorcycle. George was loved by all, he was easy to talk to and a great friend to many, from his sense of humor, to his political views, you would always enjoy his company. To say he will be missed is an under statement, he will never be forgotten and always carried in the hearts of many.

....show , 82, of Derby, VT passed away on June 5, 2014 in Newport, VT. She was born January 30, 1932 in Derby, VT to Harris and Goldie (McDonald) Crowe. On June 26, 1952 she married Walter DeRoehn who predeceased her January 15, 2006. Colleen graduated from Derby Academy in 1950. She retired from the Town of Derby as assistant Town Clerk.
Among her hobbies, she enjoyed knitting, cooking, baking and reading.
She is survived by her children: James DeRoehn and his wife Carole of Derby, VT, William DeRoehn of Hyde Park, VT, and Michael DeRoehn and his wife Chastity of Derby, VT and by 6 grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sisters: Audrey Sanborn, and Beverly Morse.

Horace Warner Strong
....show , 89, of Craftsbury Common, VT, died from an accident at his home on Tuesday, June 3, 2014. Horace was born in Marlboro, Massachusetts on February 21, 1925, and came with his parents to Vermont in 1928, just in time for the Great Depression. Educated in the Craftsbury schools, he graduated from Craftsbury Academy in 1943. He farmed for four years and then went to the University of Vermont, where he graduated in1952, after taking a year off.
He taught an exploratory course in agriculture at Craftsbury for a year and farmed with his brother Burton until 1960. He then began teaching math and science in the Greensboro school. For a farmer to become a teacher required many summers of additional education. He then taught in Craftsbury where he established an industrial arts program and was instrumental in establishing the CAPE program of physical education. He finished out teaching his fifteen years at Lamoille Union High School. Later he taught part time for fifteen years at Sterling College as a woodworking teacher.
In 1950, he married Ruth Esser. They had five children and enjoyed travelling and canoeing in the summers.
In 1964, he established Strong’s Canoe Yard, a shop that repaired, restored, and built cedar canvas canoes. The shop started with fiberglass canoes, but soon saw the light and made over 125 cedar canvas canoes. The shop also taught canoe building, offering more than 25 classes.
In 1986, he married Shirley Bruns of Latimer, Iowa. Horace and Shirley worked together in the canoe shop, and teaching classes until his retirement in 1998. They traveled winters throughout the United States, finally wintering in Uvalde, Texas in 1997, where they continued to live in their recreational vehicle during the winter months.
He leaves his wife Shirley of Craftsbury Common; daughter Nancy West and husband Jim of Craftsbury; son Nathan Strong and wife Vicky of Albany, VT; son Russell Strong of Craftsbury; daughter Lynn Calderwood and husband Ricky of Highgate; son Matthew Strong and wife Patty of Stowe. Also, stepsons Steven Bruns and wife Karen; Mark Bruns and wife Debbie of Iowa; stepdaughter Dee Ann Arlow and husband Steven of Alaska; brother Burton and wife Irene of Craftsbury; sisters-in-law Patty Rodemyer and husband Marvin and LaDona Roelfs and husband Keith of Iowa; and sister-in-law Jackie Campbell and husband Keith of Alaska. Also, six grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, one great-grandson, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Horace was predeceased by his parents, his sister Shirley Strong, and his grandson U. S. Marine Sgt. Jesse Strong.
Funeral services will be held at the United Church of Craftsbury on Monday, June 9, 2014 at 2 PM, with the Rev. Alan Parker officiating, with a committal service at Craftsbury Common Cemetery, followed by a reception at the Sterling College dining hall.

....show , 70, passed away on May 30, 2014 in Lakeland, FL following a sudden illness.
She was born on January 1, 1944 in Lowell Vermont, the daughter of the late Ange Marie and Idel Bonneau (McAllister). During her husband’s career in the U.S. Navy, Rachel lived in various locations in the U.S. and the Philippines. She received a Kidney Transplant from her sister MaryAnn in July 1975 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center before returning to Vermont in 1978 and later relocating to Florida in 1990. She retired after working many years in the retail field. Rachel loved to read, work jigsaw puzzles, cuddle with her cats, and enjoy a good laugh with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dale Page and her brother Raymond Bonneau. She is survived by her daughter Karen Page (Lakeland, FL) and son James Page (Phoenix, AZ); sister MaryAnn Capetz and her husband Larry(Lakeland, FL); brother Armand Bonneau (S. Paris, ME); brother Leonard Bonneau and his wife Rhoda (Sheridan, WY); brother Martin Bonneau and his wife Kathy (Williston, VT); and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place on Sunday June 15, 2014 from 6-8 pm at Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 37 Lake Road, Newport VT. Funeral services will be held on Monday June 16, 2014 at 11 am, at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Newport, VT followed by burial at St. Ignatius cemetery in Lowell, VT.

....show , 95, of Barton, VT passed away on May 30, 2014 in Newport, VT. She was born on January 27, 1919 in Medford, MA to Donald and Louise (Malo) MacKenzie. Marie graduated from Newport High School in 1936. On July 24, 1937 she married Melvin Warner who predeceased her.
She was custodian along with her husband for 4 years at the Lowell Elementary School. Her hobbies included gardening, working in her flower beds, cooking, baking, and writing short stories for the Green Mountain Trading Post. She and her husband loved to go to dances and bingo.
She is survived by her children: Joanne Dawson of Bellows Falls, VT, and Patrick Warner of Evansville, VT, by her daughter-in-law Greta Scott and her husband Gaelen of St. Johnsbury, VT, by her brother-in-law Lionel Carbonneau of Derby, VT, and sister-in-law Eleanor (Penn) Mackenzie of Gardner, MA, 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her two children: Janet Jones in 2009 and David Warner in 2006.
She was also predeceased by her siblings: Robert MacKenzie, Donald MacKenzie, Geraldine Higgins, and Elaine Carbonneau.

Valerie J. Griffin
....show , 62, of Derby, VT passed away on May 30, 2014 at her home in Derby, VT. She was born June 23, 1951 inNewport, VT to M. Jeanne (Chainey) Griffin and the late H. Dean Griffin.
She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in the class of 1969. She was in the first madrigal singing group started by Sr. Edmund of Jesus. Val was also in the first folk group at St. Mary’s Church. She was the concert pianist for many of the musicals at Sacred Heart School. Valerie attended nurses' training at Fanny Allen in Burlington and later worked as an LPN at Dartmouth Hitchcock for a few years and in the Tacoma, Washington area for nearly 30 years. Valerie's nursing and compassion encompassed more than just in a working situation. She took care of two young boys in Tacoma,Washington while their mother was unable to care for them. She loved animals and was always supplying them with food and care, especially chipmunks!
Val moved back to the Derby, VT in November of 2006 after the death of her brother whom she cared for for 10 years. She joined the senior choir and folk group at St Mary's Church until her lungs no longer allowed her to sing. Val organized the Sunday adorations and the veterans adorations with her best friend. She was also co-founder of the Cenacle of Life group at St. Mary’s Church. Val was a Eucharistic Minister for Mater Dei Parish and visited the sick bringing them the Holy Eucharist. Cancer is a monster but Val never gave up helping others and doing the things she enjoyed the most. She spent most of the summers along brooks fishing for trout with Neena. She planted a blueberry, raspberry and strawberry patch on her land along with a small fruit tree orchard and still made time for a vegetable garden.
She is survived by her best friend Neena Gratton of Derby, VT, by her mother M. Jeanne Chainey of Hyde Park, VT, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was predeceased by her daughter Kellie Marie, by her father H. Dean Griffin and by her brother Robert Griffin.

Albert E. Lague
....show , 69, of Derby passed away peacefully, after a long illness on May 26, 2014 at his home in Derby, VT. He was born November 28th, 1944 in Newport, VT to Thomas E. and Lucia (Labrecque) Lague. On August 19th, 1967 he married Wanda M. Willard who survives him. Educated at Sacred Heart Schools, Al graduated in 1963. After a stint in the National Guard he was employed by C.H. Willard’s Plumbing and Heating, and Butterfields Corp. in Derby Line, VT. In 1966 he was hired by I.B.M. in Essex Junction and worked there until he took early retirement in 1995, retiring as a Senior Computer Engineer. He then worked for Orleans Office Product’s until he started his own business, Al’s Pc repair in 1996.
Al enjoyed many things. In the Spring it was Maple sugaring. Summer’s were spent fishing, cutting wood, and tending his garden. In the Fall everything stopped for hunting camp. Winter, it was snowmobiling and ice fishing. He loved to tinker on things, and he reloaded shells for lots of his friends and hunting buddies. He served his community as both an usher and member of St. Mary’s Council for several years.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Wanda M. (Willard) Lague, son, Thomas C. Lague and wife Merry Jane E. (Emmons) of Derby, daughter, Michelle D. Whalen and husband Matthew of Washington, VT, by his sisters: Jane Triaureau and her husband Patrice of L’Epine; France, Lorraine Towle of West Falmouth; MA, Anita Fleming and her husband Jim of Prescott, Arizona; and by a brother George H. Shirlene Warner Dolan
....show passed away May 25 at the Manor in Morrisville after suffering many years from Alzheimer’s. She was born March 12, 1923 in Lowell, the daughter of Wallace and Lillis Warner. She was the eldest of six siblings: Winston, Althea, Lawrence, and John who are deceased and her surviving sister, Beth, and surviving brother, Michael. She received her education in Lowell and at Peoples Academy, Morrisville. She worked in the war plants in Detroit during WWII as “Rosie the Riveter”. After the war she returned to Lowell and married Lloyd Dolan in 1945 with whom she celebrated 60 years of marriage before his passing in 2006. Shirlene’s interests included reading, antiquing, genealogy, sewing, cooking, gardening, singing and drama. For years she worked in the Jay and North Troy school systems. In later life she and Lloyd were instrumental in founding the Lowell Historical Society. She is survived by their three children, Andrea Fournier and her husband Philip, Daphne Christiansen and her husband Keith, and their son Byron, all of whom live in the area. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Michael Dudley and his wife Phyllis, Peter Dudley and his wife Debbie, Erin Boxer and her husband, Andrew, and Kelly Ochs and her husband Chris. She had ten great-grandchildren. A committal service is planned for a later date.
Beverly Norton Ronk

Bev was born May 18, 1927 in East Liberty, PA to Winston and Roxie (Hall) Hunt of Morgan, VT. She had one sister Geraldine who passed away at three months old. Bev was first married to Robert Norton on May 18, 1949 and they had six children who they raised in Morgan-Charlie Norton of Morgan, VT (his children, Charlie Jr, Tristan and Julia), Robert Norton, Jr and Meredith of Parker, CO,( their children, Christopher, Thomas, Jennifer and Allison), Susan and Charles Leavitt of Newport, VT, (their children Heather, Kevin, and Kristie), Debi and Brian Kerr of Morgan, VT (their children, Fae, Ericka, and Tyrel) Johanna and Steve Millheiser of Naples, Maine (their children Kyle and Kelley),Judith and Pat Love of Lake Worth, FL (their children Hannah and Dylan), and by 12 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter.
Bev graduated from Newport High School in 1947. She was one of the first phone operators and worked as one until her retirement. After she retired, she worked a few years per-diem at Orleans Essex VNA because she liked to keep active and help others. After her divorce Bev moved to West Palm Beach, FL. She ended up finding love again with someone she met at Bible Study-Paul Ronk. They married on March 7, 1984 and later moved back to VT in 1990 and unfortunately he passed away in 2008. The last few years she had the enjoyment of living with Judy in Florida and then spending vacations at Judy’s home in Morgan where she couldn’t wait to see everyone of her grandchildren and to do something with them-shopping, or going out to eat. She was always on the go when she was still able to drive her self, you would almost have to schedule an appointment to see her. She had many interests and hobbies, many activities, and youth groups through Church, painting, sewing, knitting, and shopping but her grandchildren she loved deeply and there was nothing she wouldn’t do for them.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and loved researching her family tree. She said we should always be proud of who we were because we came from good stock-William Bradford from the Mayflower. She was predeceased by her granddaughter Erin Norton.

Holly graduated from North Country Union High School in the class of 1997 and on May 17, 2014 she received her Bachelor Degree from Johnson State College. Holly had received 2 Associate Degrees before that from CCV.
Holly battled cystic fibrosis all of her life and she didn’t let it get her down as she always had a happy outlook on life. Her hobbies included going fishing and riding ATV’s.
She is survived by her parents: Victor and Margaret Provoncha of Newport, VT, by her brother Barry Provoncha of Troy, VT, by her fiancé Steven Lagasse’ of ST. Albans, and by several Aunts and Uncles. She was predeceased by her sister Cindy Provoncha, and by her brother Randy Provoncha.

Alice was a custodian for North Country Hospital for many years and she was also a waitress at the East Side Restaurant. She was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary Post 798 where she was also past president. Her hobbies included sewing and making crafts and she enjoyed her annual 4th of July sale in Derby, VT. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, working in her flower gardens and having a good time. She is survived by her children: Richard Kelley and his wife Jean of Newport, VT, Kimball Kelley of Newport, VT, and Lori Kelley of Newport, VT. NEWPORT -- Adrien Rufus Patenaude
....show of Newport, VT, passed away on May 13, 2014, at age 64. He died peacefully at the Fletcher Allen Health Center after a brief and courageous battle with esophageal cancer. He is now gone to his heavenly Father.
Adrien was born in Newport, VT on April 10, 1950 to Joseph and Lucille (Fontaine) Patenaude and grew up on their farm in Holland, VT. Adrien attended Holland Central Schools and North Country Union High School and graduated in the class of 1970. He attended the Swain School of Design in New Bedford, MA and graduated with a Bachelor Degree in graphic design. He had various jobs (and later had his own company) in the Burlington area, worked in Maine and finally returned to run a business in his home town area of Newport, Vermont. Adrien was a very talented artist with many wonderful paintings and also produced many local signs. He had a passion for nature and landscape scenes and sold paintings locally and internationally. His paintings have been displayed in many different galleries all over New England and are also on display at Jay Peak and many other places. His art work will live on in all of his paintings. He was a long time member of the Saco Bay Artists in Maine.
Adrien was very generous with donations of his paintings to many local worthy causes. He was well known in the Newport and the surrounding area. His signature name was Adrien “Yellow” Patenaude because he loved yellow so much and put it in all of his paintings. He recently finished illustrating a book for the famous poet and author, Jerry Johnson. The name of the book is “Noah’s Song” and will soon have a special edition coming out in Adrien’s memory. There is also a CD with the book with “Noah’s Song” sung by Jon Gailmor.
He is survived by a son, Aaron Patenaude, who is stationed in Fort Drum, NY and Aaron’s mother, Carol Forbes, of Leland, NC. He is also survived by his loving girlfriend of 11 years, Patricia Warner of Newport, her two children Steve (and Jean) Warner with 3 children of Springfield, VT and her daughter Loraine (and Gene) with two children of MA. He is survived by his parents, Joseph and Lucille (Fontaine) Patenaude and 3 brothers and 5 sisters. Ruth Hilton Hale
....show , 65, of Albany, VT passed away on May 12, 2014 at her home . She was born August 25, 1948 in Bath, Maine to Fred and Marjorie (Quinn) Soule. On June 22, 1968 she married Stuart W. Hale, Sr who survives her. She graduated from Morse High School in Bath, Maine.
While a student at Johnson State College, she was awarded the Truman Scholarship which enabled her to pursue her master’s degree in social work at Smith College in N. Hampton, Mass.
She started as a social worker at Casey Family Services in Waterbury, VT and later established her own family therapy practice in her home.
Her hobbies included going for rides with Stuart, attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, photography and she was a painter of oil and pastels.
She is survived by her husband Stuart W. Hale, Sr of Albany, VT, by her children: Stuart Hale, Jr and his wife Cathleen Shattuck of Seattle, WA, Adam Hale and his companion Susan Bedusa of NY, NY Carol Hale Rowell and her husband Tim of Albany, VT, and Jason Hale and his fiancé Sonya Sackett of Albany, VT. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Gratia, Alora, Zac, JJ, Shania, Ramic and Courtney. Harold “Benny” Benjamin Jr
....show , 53, of Holland, passed away on May 12, 2014 at home with his loving family by his side. He is finally at peace after a long, courageous, battle with cancer.
Benny was born on December 17, 1960 in Newport; a son of Father, Harold Benjamin Sr., and Mother, who predeceased him, Bettie (Taylor) Benjamin.
He was a loving husband of Cara (Guillette) Benjamin, who were wed on January 28, 1989. Benny was also an amazing father, son, brother, uncle, friend, and acquaintance to anyone he met. He took great pride in his work for the Town of Derby during the winter (road maintenance) and the Derby Center Cemetery during the summer. He will be laid to rest at the same cemetery he worked. He began working there with his father, in high school, where he took gratification in its appearance, and had great respect for the deceased and their families.
When he wasn’t working hard, Benny enjoyed hunting, four-wheeling, snowmobiling, playing poker, cooking, gardening, puttering around the house, going to camp on Long Pond, and most of all, spending precious time with his family and friends. Benny’s son was the pride and joy of his life. He was very proud of every accomplishment and achievement he made.
Benny is survived by his wife, Cara; son, Harold “Ben” Benjamin III and girlfriend Desiree Charron; father, Harold Sr.; sisters: Vicki Martin and husband Bill and their son Tim, Katie Morissette and husband Harvey and her son Jordan, Toni Benjamin and fiancé David Guillette, and Tara Benjamin and Fiancé Kenny Greene. Benny is also survived by his loving father and mother-in-laws, Louis Sr. and Gail Guillette; brother-in-laws: Alan and wife Christina Guillette, Louis Jr. and wife Tracy Guillette, Jerry and wife Madonna Guillette, and Ted and wife Amy Guillette; and all of his aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, who brought him great joy.
He was predeceased by his mother, Bettie Benjamin; grandparents: Donald and Gwen Benjamin, Ralph and Mable Taylor, Perry and Phostine Austin, and John and Lucille Guillette; sister, Edie Benjamin; and nephews: Benjamin Martin and David Benjamin.
His entire family will miss him greatly, and are incredibly proud of his outlook on life, even after being diagnosed with cancer. Benny never gave up, and Cara never gave up on him. Though he has now left us, his indomitable spirit still lives. Benny beat his cancer.

Erma M. Hathaway
....show , 103, of Barton, VT formerly of Walton, NY, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2014 in Barton. She was born August 30, 1910 in Downsville, NY, to George and Alice (Hunter) Bull. On July 14, 1941 she married Orville Hathaway who predeceased her in 1949.
She graduated from Downsville High School in Downsville, NY and Oneonta Normal School in Oneonta, NY, where she received her teaching degree. She was employed part time for CPA in Walton and Leader of the 4-H Club.
She was a an elementary school teacher in Central, NY for many years. She was a member of the Walton, NY Methodist Church, assistant to the village clerk in Walton, and for many years school tax collector in Walton.
She loved to listen to music and she was a New York Yankees fan.
She is survived by her children: David Hathaway and his wife Dorothy of Barton, VT and Jane Thorick and her husband Philip of Binghamton, NY. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Christopher Hathaway of Shelburne, VT, Michael Hathaway and his wife Melissa of Burlington, VT, and Matthew Leete of Bangkok, Thailand and by her great grandchildren Reid, Iris, and Tyler. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings: Norris, Homer, Marvin, Raymond, and Milo Bull and Elsie Wheat.

Herbert L. Blake
....show , 90, of Newport, VT passed away peacefully on May 10, 2014 in Barton, VT. He was born January 11, 1924 in Newport, VT, to Raymond and Julia (Leavens) Blake. On December 24, 1966 he married Lorraine Gray who survives him. Herbert was a veteran of WW11. He was employed by Yankee Milk Co in Troy for several years. He loved his horses and attending horse shows and raising laying hens.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 21 of Newport and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 798 both of Newport.

Raymond H. Collins, Jr

He was born November 22, 1938 in Lebanon, NH to Raymond and Emma (Besaw) Collins, Sr. Mr. Collins was a machinist at Tivoly in Derby Line where he retired after 35 years of service. He enjoyed playing cards, playing bingo, telling jokes, hunting, fishing and camping. His favorite dog Snoopy passed away a couple of years ago but he now has his dog Bear.
He is survived by his beloved wife Birdena Collins of Brownington, VT, by his children: Mark Collins of Newport, VT, Douglas Collins, Sr and his wife Gloria of Brownington, VT, and Lori Collins and her fiancé Roger Calloway, Jr of Derby, VT.
He is also survived by his grandchildren: Reginald Collins, Jr, Travis Collins, Dereck Collins, Tonya Calloway, Doug Collins, Jr, Amanda Collins, Jacob Calloway, Dakota Calloway, and Kevin Collins, by his great grandchildren: Olivia Collins, Iziah Allen and Ayriel Allen. Muriel J. Webb
....show , 80, of Island Pond, VT passed away peacefully on May 8, 2014 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born January 13, 1934 in Berlin, NH, to Omer and Ruth (Hobbs) Lurvey. On October 25, 1952 she married Elmer Webb who predeceased her.
Mrs. Webb was tax collector for the Town of Brighton. She enjoyed maintaining her property and mowing the lawn. She loved flower gardening, playing the piano, bird watching, traveling throughout Vermont and making arts and crafts. She was also an avid reader.
She is survived by her children: Sharon Patenaude and her husband Rene of Newport Center, VT, Susan Webb of Island Pond, VT, James Webb of Island Pond, VT, and Sandy Frizzell and her husband Marty of Island Pond, VT, by her grandchildren: Shawn and Jason Patenaude, Celine Cote, Jimmy and Ashley Webb, Brittany and Fraser Frizzell. She is also survived by her great grandchildren: Dawson and Jordan Cote, Mya Patenaude, Elijah Patenaude, and Tyler Webb. She is survived by her sisters-in-law Shirley Dunn of North Troy, VT, Laura Morrissette of Johnson, VT and by numerous nieces and nephews. She loved her dog Newt. She was predeceased by two brothers Wayne and Wendell Lurvey.

Ruth Chaffee
....show of Albany, VT passed away peacefully on May 7, 2014 at her home. She was born in April of 1944 in the home owned by her Aunt Clara, a fact she was very proud of her entire life. She spent her childhood years growing up first, in Greensboro, and later in South Albany. During those years, she attended elementary school in Greensboro Bend, and also the Bailey Hazen School in Greensboro. In 1962, Ruth graduated from Craftsbury Academy.
After graduation, Ruth went on to enjoy a long and fulfilling life with family, friends and a great deal of travel. She began her working career at National Life in Montpelier for a brief time before marrying Carl Chaffee on April 26th, 1963 in Albany. While they raised their three children in Albany, Ruth worked for 34 years at Bogner of America before her retirement in 2009.
Ruth was well known as a wonderful cakemaker and a gifted cake decorator. Her other hobbies and talents included knitting, crafts and gardening. She also had the itch to travel. Ruth had many wonderful trips including vacations to Ireland, Costa Rica, where she first found her love of ziplining, Alaska, and many places throughout the United States. In the summer of 2012, Ruth spent nearly five weeks on a cross country road trip with friends.
Ruth was also committed to helping others. Over the years, Ruth donated many gallons of blood. She was also a tireless supporter of the Lamoille Area Cancer Network for ten years, and was later a recipient of their kind support.
Ruth was predeceased by her parents, Dolphis and Avis Sweeney in 1987 and her brother Ronald Sweeney in 2002. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Carl Chaffee of Albany, sons Keith Chaffee of Los Angeles, California, Karl and Amber Chaffee of Morgan, daughter Kelly and Andrew Swett of Brownington and three grandchildren, Hilary, McKenna and Kaden of Brownington. She also leaves sisters Nancy and Bob Ferland of Barre, Sherry and John Dudley of Waterbury, Rachel MacNeal of Barton and brother Rod and Darlene Sweeney of Craftsbury, as well as many cousins and friends.
In her final months, Ruth showed everyone who was blessed to be around her the unique ability to accept death with a great sense of peace and dignity, while never giving up on life.
A Celebration of Life for Ruth will be held at the Albany Community School on Sunday, May 25th at 2:00 P.M.

Merle H. Carlson
....show , 77, of Holland, VT passed away on May 7, 2014 in Holland, VT. She was born on December 8, 1936 in Bridgeport, CT to Oscar and Helen (Seltsam) Carlson. Merle attended High School in Bridgeport, CT and was a drummer in the high school band. She graduated from the University of CT with a B.S. in Wildlife Management and she attended Antioch New England Graduate School in Keene, NH. She was very active in the Outing Club as an undergraduate in College. Merle enjoyed the outdoors and was passionate about the environment. She loved teaching others about nature. She also enjoyed hiking, fishing, skiing, canoeing, camping, and gardening. She raised Golden Retrievers for over 20 years and she loved horses. She loved to sing in the church choir, square dance and listen to bluegrass music.
She is survived by her daughter Tamia Rudnicky and her husband James of Williamsburg, VA, by her grandchildren: Christopher and Meaghan Rudnicky both of VA, by her sisters: Lois Martin, and Barbara Nelson both of CT, and by her companion Morton Gellman of Holland, VT.

Sister Solange Poutré, FCSCJ (Sister Marie-Germain)
....show , a Daughter of the Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, passed away after several months’ illness, on May 7, 2014, at Mount Sacred Heart Provincial House Convent, Littleton, New Hampshire, at the age of 85. Solange Poutré was born November 25, 1929, in Troy, Vermont. She was the daughter of Alcide Poutré and Almida Choquette. Solange Poutré professed her vows with her Religious Congregation on August 1, 1948. During her 66 years of religious profession Sister Jeanne served in various missions in Newport, Burlington, St. Johnsbury, and Lyndonville, Vermont; Champlain and Rochester, New York; Portland, Maine; Colebrook, Whitefield, and Littleton, New Hampshire.
Sister Solange was a dedicated educator in schools and religious education resource centers for many years, turning to the nursing profession in 1980, and more recently as a volunteer for charitable organizations as well as hospitality for groups seeking to make spiritual retreats or meet for planning their benevolent organizations’ activities. In July 2013, due to her health, Sister Solange joined her Sisters at Mount Sacred Heart in Littleton. She was known for her spirit of generosity and diligent work ethic, and would enthusiastically support worthy causes. Her ready sympathy and sense of compassion made her a good advocate when someone needed practical help for surmounting their difficult personal or family circumstances.
Sister Solange was predeceased by her parents and several relatives, including 6 sisters and brothers: Réal, Fernand, Sister Carmelle, Hermance, Gervais, and Germain. She is survived by 3 brothers and 1 sister: Fabian (and Beverly) of Newport, VT; Jean-Guy (and Marielle) of Plattsburgh, NY; Rejeanne (and Paul McGee) of Point Claire, QC; Denis (and Judy) of Venice, FL; many nieces and nephews; and her Sisters in the religious community.

....show , 74, of Newport, VT passed away peacefully on May 5, 2014 in Newport, VT. She was born June 21, 1939 in Newport, VT to Harold and Evangeline (Foster) Lewis. On September 5, 1959 she married Lewis Sarracco who survives her.
Susan enjoyed going to yard sales , playing golf, and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed reading, going for walks, loved animals, especially her two cats, shopping with her granddaughter and attending her grandson hockey games and her great granddaughter’s basketball games.
She is survived by her children: Donna Blais and her husband Jim of Newport, VT, and Lewis “Butch” Sarracco and his wife Teri of Northfield, VT, by her grandchildren, Shanna Pinheiro and her husband Paul of NH, Shaun Sarracco and Jordan Sarracco both of Northfield, VT, by her great grandchildren: Haidyn Pinheiro and Milel Pinheiro. Jessica J. Whittemore
....show , 33, of Newport, VT passed away suddenly on May 3, 2014 in Newport, VT. She was born January 5, 1981 in Morrisville, VT to Dean and Sandra (Welch) Whittemore. Jessica was full of love and laughter. She was an outstanding daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and companion. She spoiled her nieces and nephews with all the love in the world. Jessie’s contagious laughter and personality brightened every room. The love she bestowed upon her family and friends will last forever. Being the oldest of 8 siblings meant she was a second mother, best friend, and a shoulder to lean on. She was a dedicated LNA and worked at the Manor in Morrisville, VT for 14 years. The residents and her co-workers looked forward to seeing her smiling face. She took pride in the care she provided. There is a hole in the hearts and lives of everyone she left behind. She also enjoyed traveling whenever she got the chance. She will never be forgotten.

....show , 91, formerly of North Troy, VT passed away peacefully on May 1, 2014 in Bristol, CT. She was born on February 14, 1923 in Concord, VT to Will and Jennie (Williams) Dodge. She married Ralph A. Wheeler, Sr who predeceased her in 1970.
Jessie attended High School in Concord, VT. She was a cook at Lyndon Institute and also operated a dress store in Lyndonville, VT. She was also a clerk at the May Store in Lyndonville at one time. She was a member of the Sacred Heart League in Troy, VT and at one time a member of the Methodist Church in Lyndonville.
She later married Roger L. Beliveau on January 1, 1972 who predeceased her in 1998.

Dean Alexander King
....show , 90, of Island Pond, VT passed away peacefully on May 1, 2014 in Lebanon, NH. He was born on April 3, 1924 in Norton, VT to Alexander and Kathleen (Foster) King. On July 24, 1949 he married Martha Boucher who survives him.
Dean was employed for 40 years at the United States Post Office as a postal clerk and for 30 years played the saxophone, clarinet and drums in a 7 piece band with the Dean King Orchestra. He held many positions for the Town of Island Pond including Town Selectman. He was also at one time on the board of North Country Union High School.

Leo A. Perron
....show , 86, of Newport, VT passed away peacefully on May 1, 2014 in Newport. He was born on April 3, 1928 in Glover, VT to Ernest and Maria (Gagnon) Perron. On March 29, 1948 he married Ruth Menard who survives him. Leo graduated from Berdett College in Massachusetts with a Degree in accounting. He enjoyed building camps with his wife and they also built their home together. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army. Leo started his career as an accountant and after 45 years he retired from Hayes Ford in Newport in 2001. In addition, he enjoyed selling cars. He held memberships with the Knights of Columbus, and Newport Elks Lodge #2155.

Ray “Skip” Kelley
....show , 61, of Derby, VT passed away on May 1, 2014 in Newport, VT. He was born October 10, 1952 in Newport, VT to Gordon and Leona (Jewett) Kelley, Sr. On September 22, 2012 he married Brenda White who survives him.
Skip was an inspector for Quality Control at Tivoley in Derby Line, VT for 41 years.
He graduated from North Country Union High School where he played in the Band and played the Drums in the Newport Rotary Festival from 1968-1972. He was formerly a member of the Newport Center Fire Department and was secretary and treasurer of the Advent Christian Church in Newport Center, VT. He attended the Church of God, played softball for Tivoley’s, enjoyed bowling, and was an avid red sox fan. He loved his church, singing, and was a member of the Sons of American Legion Post 21.
Skip was also a member of the Cars of Yesteryear and he enjoyed traveling and family gatherings.
He is survived by his wife Brenda Kelley of Derby, VT, by his children: Danielle Blake and her husband Andy of Morgan, VT, Eric Trucott and his girlfriend Paula Kimball of Holland, VT, and Craig Trucott and his fiancé Samantha Shaw of Derby, VT, by his grandchildren : Taylor, Garrett, Chelsea, Brooke, Aidan, Amelia, Alden, and AraBella.
He is also survived by his brothers: Gordon R. Kelley, Jr and his fiancé Brenda Turgeon of Newport, VT and David Kelley of Newport, VT and by several nieces, nephews, great nieces and cousins. Fred S. May
....show , 76, of Barton, VT passed away peacefully on May 1, 2014 in Newport, VT. He was born in Elmhurst, Illinois on September 20, 1937 and he always said “I was a Chicago born Vermonter”.
He graduated from Barton Academy in 1955 and from the University of VT in 1959. He received a Masters in Education from Bishop’s University. He came back to teach at his Alma Marta Barton Academy and taught there until Lake Region Union High School started where he was chairman of the Math department and where he coached soccer, basketball and baseball. With John St. Onge they started little league baseball in the Barton-Glover area. He also coached at soccer at Lake Region and Barton Academy and was later Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Lake Region where he left in 1980 and worked at E.M. Brown & Son until his retirement.
He was a member of the Barton Fire Department for many years and was one of the original Ambulance Squad members. He was one of the First classes of EMT’s that were trained at North Country Hospital. He was also a member of the Barton Medical Clinic Board which was responsible for creating the Barton Medical clinic. He was on the Board of Directors of North Country Hospital for 15 years and serving as chairman for a number of years. Fred was elected to the Orleans Northeast Essex Athletic Hall of Fame.
He enjoyed playing basketball, softball, and golf. After his retirement he enjoyed working at the Barton Golf Club which was built on the farm he grew up on.
He is survived by his wife Jane May of Barton, VT, by his children: Mark and Christine May of Jacksonville, FL, David and Lisa May of Canton, GA, Kathy and Steve Jones of Morrisville, VT, and Peter and Sherry May of Brownington, VT, by his sisters: Mary and Brian King of Barton, VT, Dorothy and David Hathaway of Barton, VT, by his grandchildren: Nathan May and Kelsey Cochran, Ian Jones, Eric Haselton, and Steve Martin and by three great grandchildren : Tyson, Nathan, Jr, and Makayla. ....show , 71, of Derby, VT passed away on April 30, 2014 at her home with her family by her side. She was born on January 20, 1943 in Stanstead, Quebec to James and Beatrice (Kenneson) French. On November 6, 1964 she married James Aldrich of Derby and moved with him to the family farm. She enjoyed being a wife, mother and homemaker and worked side by side with Jim in the family business. She was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and it was an important part of her life. She enjoyed being active in the ministry, teaching people about the Bible and the positive message it contains. She had several hobbies, that included sewing, cooking, painting, and spending time with her family and friends.
Joyce is survived by her husband James of Derby, VT, her daughter Leah and son-in-law Charlie Heath of Newport, VT. She also leaves special friends, Cindy Turner, Garri Favreau, Nancy Poston, and Chesley Stone. She was predeceased by her parents, James and Beatrice French of Rock Island, Que and her sister Joan Perrault of Ottawa, Ontario.

....show , 53, of Nashua, NH passed away unexpectedly on Sunday April 27, 2014 at his home. He was born on October 13, 1960 in Newport, VT a son of Earl, Sr and Ruth (Wood) Martin. Dale loved going to the movies, doing crossword and Sudoku puzzles fishing, motorcycling and spending time in Vermont with his family. He also enjoyed going to the Rockingham Track.
Dale was an electrician in the Nashua area and a carpenter by trade. He enjoyed volunteering his time on many Nashua Community Projects.

Fernand J. Forcier
....show , Sr, 93, of Newport, VT passed away on April 27, 2014 in Glover, VT. He was born January 1, 1921 in Newport Center, VT to Oscar and Cornelie (Trudel) Forcier. On June 2, 1952 he married Mary Anna Anita Guyette who predeceased him December 5, 2011.
Fernand was a veteran of WW11. During his lifetime he was a truck driver for Worthmore Feeds of Newport for 40 years. He was employed by Ethan Allen MFG for 16 years and after retiring from there he was driver for RCT for 17 years. In his earlier years he played tennis with the Azur Boys. Fern loved to "tinker" with many things, such as cars, TVs, radios, lawn mowers, basically anything he could "tinker" on. He loved watching tennis on TV and enjoyed taking his daily walks which allowed him to visit with his friends around town.
He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 798 of Newport.
He is survived by his children: Fernand Forcier Jr and his wife Linda “Cookie” of West Charleston, VT and by Lynn Forcier of East Burke, VT, by his grandchildren: Shawn and his wife Tarrah, Jeremy, Dawn-Marie, Michael and his fiancé Brittany, Keira Gann and her husband Adam, and Chrisitanna Noelle Hurd, and by his great grandchildren: Olivia, Conner, Donovan, Trinity, Jay'Shawn and Payton.

Wilma Marilyn Wallace Allen
....show , 93, of Newport, VT passed away on April 25, 2014 in Newport surrounded by her loving family members. She was born December 2, 1920 in Newport, VT to Earle and Elsie (Unwin) Wallace. On September 5, 1943 she married David Allen who predeceased her on June 13, 1999.
Upon graduating from Newport High School in 1938, Wilma moved to California with her family where she studied fashion design. She returned to Vermont and was employed as switchboard operator for Bell Telephone. She then married David before he was deployed to the European Front during WWII.
While raising her children, Wilma was involved in many community activities such as the United Church Women’s Group, Newport Women’s Club, Home DEM, PTA and a Boy Scout Den Mother. Throughout her life, she and her husband had many adventures: building one of the first ski lodges (Jay Barn Village) in Jay VT, living in California for a time and traveling to Hawaii. In retirement they spent hot summer days at Echo Lake, cold winters days in Texas and other seasons at their home in Newport.
Wilma is survived by her children: Winsome Hamilton of Derby Line VT, Tom Allen and his wife Nini of Hopkinton NH, daughter-in-law Karen Allen of Ramsey NJ and Barry Allen and his wife Anita of Coventry VT. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Scott Hamilton and Diana Guillette, Reed and Deb Hamilton, Leeland Allen, Joselyn Allen, Sean and Kristin Allen, Ryan Allen, Wesley Allen, Schuyler Allen, and great grandson Landon Hamilton. She is survived by her sister Winsome Wallace of Burlington VT. Her son D. Michael Allen and brother Bernard Wallace predeceased her.
Her wishes were expressed in a segment of an anonymous poem she gave to her daughter. “When I come to the end of the road, and the sun has set for me. I want no rites in a gloom–filled room. Why cry for a soul set free.”

Mrs. DeMichael loved her home, her family, watching the birds, gardening and her cats. She and her late husband went camping with their children when they were young. She was a member of the CT Alliance for the mentally ill.

Fayalene attended Lyndon Institute and worked as an LNA at the Greensboro Nursing Home. She also sold Avon for many years. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, sewing, growing plants and watching the birds. She always looked forward to the annual family reunion held at her sister Ruby's. She so enjoyed spending time with her family.

Bernard P. Rondeau
....show , 84, of Newport died peacefully on April 21, 2014 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, NH.
He was born to Joseph and Evelina (LeBlanc) Rondeau, the 15th of 18 children, and he grew up in Newport Center.
On August 21, 1954, he married Alice Hebert, and they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this summer
Mr. Rondeau was a dairy farmer for most of his life and was later employed by Yankee Milk and Tivoly. He was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport. He was an avid square dancer for 28 years, and he greatly enjoyed all of the traveling he and his wife were able to do, primarily after retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Alice, of Newport; his three children: Catherine Comtois and her husband, Richard of Derby, Deborah Cormier and her husband, Mark of Worcester, MA, and Stephen Rondeau and his wife, Sheri of Vashon, WA; nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren; his sisters: Noella Rondeau of Newport and Sr. Lucienne Rondeau of Methuen, MA; his brothers: George Rondeau of Columbia, TN and Paul Rondeau of Claremont, NH, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, by six sisters: Simone Therrien, Jeanne Bathalon, Therese Laramee, Laurette Tweed, Lucille Brouillard, and Sr. Francoise Rondeau, and by his brother, Gerard Rondeau.

Leopold Donat Campbell
....show , 88, of Newport, VT passed away on Friday April 18, 2014 in Newport. He was born in Irasburg, VT on September 24, 1925 to Donat and Jeanne (Stewart) Campbell.
In 1947 he married Rachel Gaboriault who predeceased him on February 3, 2007.
They lived on a farm in East Albany, VT for 13 years before moving to Newport in 1961. He was employed at Orleans Division of Ethan Allen, Inc for 30 years before retiring.
Leo was a communicant of St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport for many years. He was a man of unique wit and wisdom and often entertained people with his humorous thoughts on life called “Leo” isms. His quiet insight will be greatly missed. He and Rachel went on many cruises and traveled extensively to several different areas of the United States. Leo loved spending time with his family, playing cards with them and the last several years with his sister-in-laws Florence Fontaine, Isabelle Pierce, and Noella LeBlanc.
He is survived by his son Philip Campbell and his wife Suzanne of Vernon, NY, by his daughters: Helen Ellsworth and her husband Merritt of St. Albans, VT, Alice Drake and her husband Gary of Fletcher,VT, and Patricia Campbell and George Eisenhardt of Addison, VT. He is also survived by nine grandaughters: Allison Ruhnke, Amy Tetreault, Sarah Devendorf, Kristina Spooner, Shannon Ellsworth-Padden, Amanda Kennedy, Abbey Drake, Emilie Rich, and Andrea Miller and 9 great grandchildren who enjoyed his famous grape jelly, meatballs, and numerous jokes. He is also survived by his brothers: Fernand and Raymond Campbell. Besides his wife who predeceased him, he was predeceased by his sisters Gilberte Lanoue and her husband Roland, Jeannette Bentley and her husband Rodney, and Theresa Campbell and by his brother Romuald Campbell and his wife Orilla.

Pat was a member of the women’s auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 798 of Newport. She volunteered at the Front Desk at North Country Hospital for many years. Her hobbies included cooking, doing arts and crafts and free hand drawing and painting. Her joy were holidays and the annual family fishfry.
She is survived by her husband Homer Morin of Newport Center, VT, by her children: Mike Morin and his wife Monique of Newport Center, VT, Tim Morin of Troy, VT and Pam Starr and her husband Gary of Jay, VT. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Michelle Silva and her husband Michael, Liza Morin, Shane Morin and his companion Kara Campbell, Eric Morin, Melissa Zebrowski and her husband Andrew, Robin Coulter and her husband Tom, Angie Moore and her husband Ryan, Andy Starr and his companion Tonya Ashman, and Joseph Starr and his wife Amanda. She is also survived by her brother Kenneth Mills of Texas, and by her sister Janice Poginy and her husband Bernard of Coventry, VT, and by numerous nieces and nephews. Frederick Adelbert Prue, Jr
....show , 95, of Irasburg, VT passed away on April 11, 2014 in Barton, VT. He was born on May 6, 1918 in Newport, VT to Frederick and Olive (Pelkey) Prue, Sr. On July 26, 1939 he married Marjorie J. Rowland who predeceased him on February 26, 2007.
Fred was a conductor for the Canadian Pacific Railroad where he retired after 40 years of service. He enjoyed gardening, and he loved to go the Farmer’s market to sell Marjorie’s baked goods and vegetables. He liked to play cards with his family and friends in a very quiet and subdued manor. Fred loved to write music as well as play his guitar and he played with Doc and Chickie Williams on more than one occasion. He above all loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
He is survived by his children: Fred Prue, Val Royer and her husband Richard, Brenda Stewart, Donna Jewer and her husband Lester, Diana Poginy and her husband David, Pam Prue and her friend Pat Pine, Louie Prue and his wife Collette, John Prue and his wife Clare, Marjorie Morley and her husband James, Danny Prue and his wife Linda, Pearla Brown and her husband Blaine, and David Prue and his wife Barb, also by his daughter-in-law Roxanna Prue, 33 grandchildren, 62 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, numerous step children and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his son Terry Prue on February 23, 2014, also by his daughter Janice, by his brothers Vernon, Reginald, Kenneth, Leonard, and by his sisters: Madeline Collins, Doris Karabarus, Elaine Daniels, and Marion Lakin.

Louis was owner and operator of Handy’s Auto Repair in North Troy, VT. He was an active member of the Church of God on Crawford Road in Derby, VT. His passion was to restore old cars. He held memberships with the Troy Area Lions Club and he was a member of Cars of Yesteryear. He is survived by his wife Louise Handy of North Troy, VT, by his children: Robert Handy of N. He was born April 17, 1947 in Stanstead, Quebec, Canada to Irene (Goupil) Pouliot and the late Albert Pouliot. During his lifetime Lawrance was a self-employed painter. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Lawrance enjoyed cooking, gardening, and doing arts and crafts work. He had a unique sense of humor.

Lennie Mae Thompson Emerson
....show , 93, formerly of Brownington, VT, passed away on April 8, 2014 at her home in South Portland, Maine. She was born June 14, 1920 in Irasburg, VT to George and Eliza (Stone) Thompson. On February 29, 1936 she married Richard Ovis Emerson who predeceased her. She attended Brownington schools and Lyndon Institute.
Lennie was a cook for the Derby Line Graded School, Orleans High School and Brownington schools for many years. She was a member of the Grange and the Methodist Church where she served as secretary, Sunday School Teacher, and choir member. She was known as a caretaker to children and all others who needed care and attention, a fabulous cook, a talented woman who sewed, put up wall paper and made amazing crafts. She was a good Christian woman who lifted her voice in singing to the Lord (and boy could she whistle and she was a friend to all.
She is survived by her daughters: Betty Ann Emerson Towle of Gray, Maine and Mary-Lou Emerson Stenberg and her husband Jan Stenberg of Greenville, South Carolina. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Laurie Towle Grant (husband Peter), Jon Emerson Towle,( wife Wendy) , Stephen David Towle,(wife Mazie), Sven Peter Stenberg, and Christine Stenberg Lites, by her great grandchildren: Cory Towle, Krystal Towle, Margaret Towle, Lily Towle, Erica Brewster, Griffin Lites, Emerson Lites, Avery Lites, Tor Stenberg, and Val Stenberg, and by her great great grandchild: Maleeya Towle, Brylee Poynton and soon to be born Stella Severi on May 11, 2014. and by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Michael Andre Meunier

He was born March 8, 1961 in Newport, VT to Marcel and Jeannine (Fournier) Meunier. On July 29, 2000 he married Linda Turgeon who survives him. He attended Sacred Heart Schools in Newport. Michael was a skilled self employed carpenter.
He enjoyed 4 wheeling, motorcycling, and snowmobiling. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Linda Meunier of North Troy, VT, by his mother Jeannine Meunier of Westfield, VT, his step children: Douglas Aulis and his companion Amy Blacketer of Newport, VT, and Krystal Collins and her husband Patrick of Glover, VT, by his grandchildren: Dammieon, Giddieon, Pennelopea, Haley, Zackery, Dylan, and Porcha. Harold R. Hansen
....show , 73, of North Troy, Vermont passed away on April 7, 2014 in Lebanon, NH surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 12, 1940 to Reginald and Laura (Bocash) Hansen. On February 10, 1962 he married Margo St. Onge, they were married for 52 years.
Harold worked for the town of Troy for many, many years with his brother and father. He was also a bus driver for Troy School where he retired in 2011 after many years. He enjoyed all the many hours spent on the bus getting to know the children.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, he loved being outside, camping, being in the water, and having cookouts. He was a tell it like is kind of man and loved to joke around. Harold was a member of the North Troy Fire Department for over 40 years, 26 years of which he was the fire chief. He was a member of the Masonic Union Lodge F&AM #16 of Troy and Eastern Star in North Troy.
He is survived by his wife Margo Hansen of North Troy,VT, his children: Craig Hansen of North Troy,VT, and Laurie Hisman and her husband Gary of Derby, VT, by his grandchildren Isabella Hisman of Derby, VT, Melissa Rollins of Newport Center, VT, Amy Phillips and husband Brandon of Derby, VT, Thomas Hansen and girlfriend Nicole Pennington of North Troy, VT, Tyler Hansen of Albany, VT, by his great grandchild Brandon Phillips II of Derby, VT, and by numerous nieces and nephews. Clarice Cecile Messier
....show , 92, of Newport, VT passed away on April 7, 2014 in Newport, VT. She was born September 12, 1921 Brownsburg, Quebec to Albert and Donalda (Bellinguette) Lafleur.
On October 26, 1940 she married Lucien Messier who predeceased her in 1976.
Clarice was a member of the forever young club of Newport. During her lifetime she farmed, worked in the cafeteria at North Country Hospital, and for 18 years was a senior companion at the Area Agency on Aging. She also enjoyed gardening.
She is survived by her children: Leo Messier and his wife Marlene of Coventry, VT, George Messier and his wife Maxine of Barton VT, Claire Broe and her husband Larry of Coventry, VT, and Lucille Young and her husband Larry of West Charleston, VT, by her grandchildren: Kim, Adele, Michelle, Dan, Jennifer, Chad, Aaron, Anitra, John, and Theresa, by her great grandchildren: Joshua, Danielle, Nicholas, and Dominic and Haley, and by step grandchildren, Melissa, Joni and Anthony.
She is also survived by her brothers: Richard Lafleur of Irasburg, Maurice Lafleur and by her sisters: Delores Harbec of Derby, VT, and Gertrude Beauregaurd and her husband Ernest of Glover, VT. by her sister-in-laws Anita Lafleur of Orleans, and Rejeanne LeBlond of Derby Line, VT and numerous nieces and nephews and her special friends at the nursing home, especially Kelly. ....show , 85, of Newport, VT died Monday April 7, 2014 in Newport. She was born on January 23, 1929 in Westmore, VT to Stanislaus and Rosina (Clouatre) Gaboriault. She married David R. Pierce, Jr. on May 30, 1949 in Barton, VT and lived in Hanover, NH for 38 years. Mr. Pierce passed away on June 1, 1987 in Hanover, NH.
She leaves two daughters: Laura Pierce of Portland, ME, Gail Roper of Tewksbury, MA, and a son James Pierce of Willard, NC; and by two grandchildren: Michelle McCrillis of Gorham, ME, and Brennan Pierce of Willard, NC; two great grandchildren: Abigail and Adeline McCrillis of ME. Isabelle is also survived by her sister Noella LeBlanc of Derby, VT, Florence Fontaine of Newport, VT, and Irene Bowen of Essex, VT, Georgette and Ruth Rowell both of South Albany, VT. She was predeceased by sisters: Lucianne, Lucille, and Rachel and by brothers: Aime, Wilfred, Arsene, Rudy, and Paul and by grandsons Michael Pierce and Mark Nichols.

David A. Plato
....show , 46, of Newport, VT passed away on April 6, 2014 in Newport. He was born April 9, 1966 in Vancouver, WA to Alfred and Irene (Kaszycki) Plato. David was formerly a security guard in Arizona. He enjoyed summertime barbeques, watching crime shows on television, growing plants, and he loved listening to rock and country music.

Henry P. Gaboriault
....show , 86, of Barton, VT passed away on April 06, 2014 in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. He was born on December 15, 1927 in Sawyerville, Quebec to Henry and Arcilia (Jette) Gaboriault. On August 08, 1959 he married Martine Laramee who survives him, after being married for 55 years.
Henry retired from the Canadian Pacific Railroad as a Section Foreman after 45 years of service. Henry enjoyed going to work and was not one to sit still. He would still find time to play games with the family, which he enjoyed very much. He was proud of his homes and his well kept lawns. Henry served his community as a past member of the Barton Fire Department and an usher for St. Paul’s Catholic Church for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife Martine Gaboriault of Barton, Vermont, by his children: Colette and her husband Ron Houle of Iraburg, Vermont; Marianne and her husband Peter Lussier of Barton, Vermont; and Richard Gaboriault and his wife Lucie of Barton, Vermont. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Jessica, Michelle, Kristi, Cierra, Nicholas, Justin, Emily, Paul-Martin, and Kaytlyn, and by his great granddaughter Kadence. He is also survived four sisters, and by several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by three brothers.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 11, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the St. Paul’s Church in Barton, Vermont with Father Tim Naples officiating. A spring burial will be held at the Welcome O. Brown Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Joan Pender “Penny” Schmitt
....show , 75, of Craftsbury Common, VT passed away on April 3, 2014 in Burlington, VT. She was born May 3, 1938 in New York City to Pender and Elizabeth (Van Tine) Eldredge. On February 27, 1960 she married Michael A. Schmitt III who predeceased her on March 15, 2004.
She graduated from Miss Porter's School in Farmington, CT, and also received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, PA.
After college she worked in Advertising at J. Walter Thompson and Geer Dubois Agency in New York City.
She and her late husband were owners of the Inn on the Common from 1974-2003.
Mrs. Schmitt was a trustee at Sterling College of Craftsbury Common, VT, a member of the Old Home Day committees, the Craftsbury Common Village Improvement Society and was active politically.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing tennis and golf. She also traveled and went on cruises, and watched tennis and golf on television.
She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Schmitt of Kansas City, MO; by two half sisters: Patricia Ward of Florida and Christine Lamarca of Ohio; sister-in-law Kathie Woods of Minnesota, and by her loyal companion, her dog Chico.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday April 11, 2014 at the United Church of Craftsbury Common with the Rev. Alan Parker officiating. Spring interment in Craftsbury Common Cemetery.
