Ronald Baker McKenny
....show passed away on July 25, 2014 in Newport, Vermont at age 75 following a long illness. Son of Gordon and Dorothy (Baker) McKenny, he was born in Newport on October 30, 1938 and attended Newport Schools. Upon graduation in 1956, he attended Tilton School, Mitchell College and the University of Vermont before joining the VT Air National Guard in 1962. After his training, he joined the two-family business of CS Emery & Company, Customs Brokers on the northern Vermont border. In 1964, he married Sandra L. Haselton and raised their family in Newport, where they lived together for most of their 49 year marriage.
Ron was probably the longest continuous member of Newport Country Club (NCC) [1952-2013]. He was a young teenager when he began his lifelong love/hate relationship with the game of golf. As an adult, he served on the NCC Board of Directors and as President during the clubhouse reconstruction in 1993. He was honored in 2010, when they named him to Newport Country Club’s Honor Roll.
One of his favorite days of the year was the NCC Family Day; an annual golf tournament that was played every July 4th. The original McKenny Team grew to an extended group of 15-20 "family" members over the years. He enjoyed the countless hours organizing the group, making sure that each of the family teams was balanced and fair.
In addition to being a golfer, Ron loved a great book and was a voracious reader. He read several novels each week and had previously been a trustee and Board of Director President of the Goodrich Memorial Library in Newport for many years.
Ron was an avid and devoted Red Sox fan, going as far as listening to games on the radio while fishing and then later finishing up watching it at home on tv after the fish were caught (or not!). Throughout his life he alternately cheered and lamented their annual journey toward the Pennant Race.
Ron possessed a great sense of humor and unique style of writing. He wrote many letters and later emails to newspapers, friends and family, always open and honest with a flair that was enjoyed by all.
Family was of utmost importance to him. One of the highlights of his later life was the visits from his twin granddaughters. When they weren't badgering him to read to them, they were beating him at cards. Rummy was a particular favorite. Annual trips with family and life long friends to the Wells Beach area of Maine for lobsters and steamers was the highlight of every summer, and was a tradition that he always looked forward to. Upon his retirement in 1993, Ron and Sandy spent their winter months in Vero Beach, Florida, making many new friends, enjoying the sunshine and new golf partners.
Ron is survived by his wife Sandra, daughters Heather Menard and wife, Sara LaBarre of Milton, VT, and Alicia Hanrahan, her husband Doug, and their children Serena and Bailey of Randolph, VT. He also leaves a brother, Douglas McKenny and his wife Sara of Newport Town, and sister-in-law, Jean McKenny of Derby, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, and brother, Stanley McKenny.
