John Paul Cadieux
....show of Newport, VT passed away peacefully on Dec. 28, 2014 at age 90. Born in Richford, VT, the eldest of 10 children of Pierre and Marie (Benoit) Cadieux, he was raised in North Troy. One day after his high school graduation in 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for 3 years in the Pacific Theater, including on Guam. He was always very proud of his service as a SeaBee. Upon his return to North Troy in 1946, he noticed that his good friend Jack Starr’s little sister Ida had grown up quite a bit. John and Ida Mae Starr married that fall and shared 68 years together.
John returned to work at the family business, Cadieux’s Grain Store, and upon his father’s untimely death, became manager of the feed store at a young age. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and hiker and a charter investor in a new business in the area – Jay Peak Ski Area. He served on Jay Peak’s very first ski patrol.
After years of difficulty having a child, John and Ida adopted a baby boy – Peter John. Two years later Ida gave birth to daughter Barbara Jean, completing the young family. In 1962, after the sale of the feed and grain business, the family moved to Colebrook, NH where John was hired as the manager of the Bailey Feed store. Bailey was absorbed by Wirthmore, who kept him on. In 1968, Wirthmore was bought out by Agway and John was named manager of their Newport, VT store, meaning that he and the family could return to their beloved Northeast Kingdom, close to their large, extended families.
John remained in Newport the rest of his life; a hardworking, honest, well respected business manager. Later, he also worked at (among others) Space Research in Jay and, after retirement, part-time at Starr’s Transportation in North Troy.
John was pre-deceased by his parents, daughter Barbara, and siblings Laurent “Peter” Cadieux, Madeline “Peanut” Cushing, Valida Spooner and Yvonne Briggs. He is survived by his loving wife and caregiver in recent years Ida, son Peter and his wife Susan Brecht-Cadieux of Plattsburgh, NY, and granddaughters Maria Cadieux of Plattsburgh (and boyfriend Chris LeClair), Hana Cadieux of Yarmouth, ME (and fiance Scott McQuilkin) and Greta Gilmore of Melbourne, Australia (and husband Dylan Gilmore.) He also leaves numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws who have been very close, as well as many friends and neighbors who have been special and helpful to him through a long and difficult decline.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in John’s memory to the Orleans Essex VNA & Hospice or American Legion Post #28 in North Troy, where John was a continuous member for over 70 years. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 3 at Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 4670 Darling Hill Road in Newport. Visiting hours will begin at 1:30 p.m. with a memorial service at 3:00 p.m.

The saying, “When god made you, he broke the mold” must have been written for Jeanne Bonnell
....show , who was known by many as “Jeannie B, Nana, Mom, Auntie, Madame”. Jeanne passed away peacefully on Monday December 8, 2014. Jeanne lived a fulfilling 83 years of life, spending 64 of them with her husband Art. Art and Jeanne moved to the North East Kingdom 35 years ago on a whim from Montreal, where they were both born and raised. Jeanne left a well-appointed job as the first female Manager at IBM in Canada, which was something she never told people, because, to Jeanne, it was not a big deal. When moving to Newport they had no plans, no jobs, just the desire to enjoy life at an early age and to see where the cards would fall. The cards never fell, they continued to build. Jeanne spent 27 years at the Community National Bank, where her official title was Director of Community Circle, however, she was so much more than that to those she worked with: she was a mentor, a consultant, a shoulder to lean on, the funny lady at the bank in the eyes of a child and quite frankly to the adults as well.
Her grandson Evan’s post on FaceBook summarizes how I think everyone who had the privilege of knowing Jeanne feels: I don’t usually write these sorts of things but that lovely, spunky, funny, caring and stubborn lady helped shape me into the man I am today. May you rest in comfort and peace and know that all of us down here thank you for everything you’ve done for us and taught us throughout your incredible journey on earth. I love you Nana to the end of the earth and back and I’ll miss you dearly but know that every life you touched was that much better for you being a part of it. We’ll be seeing you, make sure you save us a seat up there ;)
Jeanne is survived by her husband Arthur, son Garry and wife Lynda, daughter Judy, daughter Sandra and husband Walter, granddaughter Amanda and husband Miguel, grandsons Evan, Alex and wife Lauren and first great grandchild Lexi.
Jeanne and her family would like to send a big thank you to the North Country Hospital for their care and compassion over the past week. They are truly fantastic people.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to North Country Hospital Scholarship Fund. Jeanne’s wishes were to have a gathering in the spring to celebrate her life. Details will be announced at a later date.

Job Robert “Bob” Clapper
....show was born on May 7, 1940 to Lawrence and Marianne Lathye Clapper. He passed on October 18, 2014 at his home in Holland, VT surrounded by his pets. He is survived by his life partner of 38 years, Rachael Pelletier. He is also survived by Lorri LePage daughter and son Lance Clapper. He also helped raise Rachael’s children Kathlene Pelletier and David Pelletier. He loved those two as though they were his own. He is also survived by his brother Richard who lives in Ausable Forks, NY.
Bob was a Vermonter through and through. His parents had a camp on Salem when Dick and he were growing up, they spent every summer carefree as can be, swimming and fishing. He loved to tell the stories about their always leaky row boats and catching baby skunks, squirrels and chipmunks, or how they used to steal their mother’s cigarettes and hide them in the woods so they could smoke them later.
All of his grandchildren were special to him, especially Sean who lived with the couple for five years before moving to Rutland with his mother. After that along came Christopher and Josh, followed by Sara, Elizabeth, and then Amber and lastly followed by Skyler, Dillon and Deven. He had a great time with the grandchildren when they came to visit.
Bob enlisted in the Navy after high school graduation. He was a radio man on the U.S.S. Neptune and received an honorable discharge after completing his tour. After discharge he went to work at Ethan Allen in Orleans. After nearly 20 years and working himself up to a supervisory position, he decided to return to attend college. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Johnson State College with a degree in elementary school education, K-8 with an additional specialization in special education. He worked for North Country Union High School in special education for a short time and decided it wasn’t for him.
Because of his involvement with special needs students, he decided to take a position with Northeast Kingdom Mental Health Services at the Group Home on the Bluffs. While working there he met a special client, Alan and they developed a special relationship so Bob decided to bring Alan into our home. Alan was with us through thick and thin until Bob was ready to retire at 62.
After retirement he became a “house husband” and “kennel keeper” to many pets. He was especially fond of Golden Retrievers and did adopt several, the newest dog, is Cooper who slept with Bob until the end. When his closest dog, Gabriel passed, Bob had him cremated so then when he passed Gabe’s and his ashes could be mixed and spread together over the bridge between the two Salem’s.
Bob was a volunteer for Orleans Essex Home Health for a few years. While Rachael was involved with getting her increased education, Bob was her typist with much gnashing of teeth because of her habit of actually cutting and pasting her papers. He never wanted to learn to use a computer preferring a manual or electric typewriter.
As a religious man one of his greatest wishes was to visit the Holy Land and was able to do so before his health began to fail. While there he was baptized in the Jordan River. Another great moment in his life was the day he participated in the great Cadillac Parade through Barton. He was up before day light to make sure he could get inline and managed to be number 34.
The past two years were very trying for Bob with one health care problem after another. We can not wish him back, but can visualize him romping through heaven’s fields with his Golden Retrievers who have gone before him. He is at peace now.
