Richford, Vermont / Lawrenceville, Georgia - Gertrude Gagnon
....show , 89, passed away quietly on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 while at home in the loving care of her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Tim Smith. She was born Gertrude Taylor on June 3, 1924 in Salisbury, CT. Warren Morrison and Rose (Van Houten) Morrison lovingly fostered her throughout her childhood and considered her to be their daughter for their entire lives. She attended elementary school in Redding, CT and graduated from Danbury High School on 6/18/1943. Shortly after graduation from high school, like so many young women who supported the 2nd World War effort, Gertrude took a factory job at Bridgeport Brass Company in Connecticut. It was around this time she said goodbye to her cousin (with whom she was rather smitten), Walter Van Houten, as he joined the army and was sent overseas. Walter formed a close friendship while in the service with a strapping Vermont farm boy and asked Gertrude if she would also write to Fred Gagnon since the letters from home for him were scarce. When Walter returned home, Walter and Gertrude went their separate ways, but Gertrude kept writing to Fred and a romance was kindled. When Fred returned home from Italy in December of 1945 he proposed and they were married on February 9, 1946. The city girl became the country girl when Fred brought his new bride home to help him take over the family farm. Gertrude cared for her mother-in-law and learned the difficult life of a farm wife. She became a wonderful mother and was always a devoted wife, putting the needs of her children and husband before her own. Gertrude taught her daughters her love of sewing, reading and baking. Her home was always a welcome spot for her daughters’ friends - often with freshly made donuts waiting after school. In the early 60’s the family ceased dairy farming as so many small farms did at that time. Gertrude took a job at Northland Hockey Stick factory and also worked in numerous sewing factories in Vermont during her life. Gertrude loved to play Bunco and was always ready to take a trip or attend an event. She was always known as a fun loving person, easily making friends wherever she went. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and attended Sunday services with her daughters as they grew up. Later in life she was rarely caught without a puzzle book in her hands and loved her cat Sissy. She enjoyed planting colorful window boxes and visiting with friends and family. Having lived in Richford for over 50 years, in September 2007 she moved from her home next to her daughter, Pamela to live with her daughter, Deborah in Lawrenceville, GA. Gertrude delighted in making new friends and quickly found many devoted friends in her Georgia neighborhood and at her daughter, Deborah’s church. Gertrude was an enthusiastic member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit #12 in Richford where she held many offices including President, Sgt. At Arms and Historian. She was a member for more than 58 years and received an award for membership in her 50th year. She also enjoyed membership in the 8 and 40, AARP and, as a child, 4-H. Gertrude was predeceased by, Frederick Gagnon, her devoted husband of 50 years who rarely let a day pass without telling the world how much he loved her. She was also predeceased by her sisters Caroline (Morrison) Booth of Danbury CT and Lois Taylor.of Richford. Additionally, she said goodbye to her five adoring nephews: William Morrison, Fred Booth, Warren Booth, Gus Booth and Albert Booth, all of Danbury CT. She is survived by her daughters and their husbands: Deborah Smith and her husband Tim of Lawrenceville, GA; April White and her husband Michael of Glenmoore, PA and Pamela Gagnon and her husband Bruce Lovelette of Berkshire, VT. Gertrude always made it clear she had a special place in her heart for all three of her sons-in-law. She is also survived by her grandsons, Trey Hooper and his wife Oksanna, and Marine Lance Corporal Kevin White, her granddaughter Lindsay White and the special apple of her eye, her great grandson, Theo Hooper and many grand nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 22, 2013 at 11:00 AM at All Saints Catholic Church, 152 Main St., Richford with Rev. Karl Hahr celebrating the Mass of Christian burial. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in All Saints Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Sunday from 7-9 PM at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls. ENOSBURG FALLS, VT / DeLAND, FL - On July 15, Monday afternoon, Doris Theresa Comeau Bresnahan
....show passed into her Father’s arms for the first dance, handing her over to her long awaiting Danny. Dancing With The Stars her favorite show, accomplished at a young age herself, one of the things we learned was that she danced in competition! Dance, Nana, dance! Born in Haverhill, MA, February 23, 1929 of Marie (Blinn) Comeau and Gustave Comeau, sister to Mary, Gustave, Margaret, Omar predeceased, and Gladys Kabenak her remaining sibling. Married to Daniel F. Bresnahan from Haverhill in 1951, they produced two wonderful daughters, Sharon the eldest, Cheryl, the other. Never really a question of who Mom loved best….she loved. Throughout her life she was the consummate partner to her husband, being part of the US Border Patrol family. Stationed in Brownsville, Texas, then spending a majority of time in Richford, Vermont, she took charge of the Corner Store on Troy Street, then moving to “the Farm”. Always working within the home, holding us together, her accomplishments were many with her skills as a seamstress, she clothed us with Love. Always humble, she wouldn’t recognize her talents as an artist of hooked rugs in the tradition of Pearl McGown, her completed rugs waken the senses to color and finesse. Retiring to DeLand Florida in 1979, Dot and Dan started a lunch truck business which grew to serve mid Florida construction in the 80’s. Becoming involved with Friends of Deleon Springs, a volunteer organization, they enjoyed the Glenwood area where they lived. Near to her heart, her family and extended families, to whom she gave All her Unconditional Love: Daughters Sharon Bresnahan Larose, her husband Robert A. Larose of Enosburgh Falls, VT, Cheryl Bresnahan Thorp, her husband, John H. Thorp of Pumpkintown, SC; granddaughter Kristen A. Weiss, husband Ron,of DeLand, FL, Grandson Ryan H. Larose of Enosburg, VT and his companion, Octavia Feltner of DeLand, FL; great-grandchildren, Victoria M. Allie and Taylor Allie of DeLand, FL and Rhett Larose of same; Great great grandchild, Remington Daniel Barker, son of Victoria and Daniel Barker. To add greater joy to her life was granddaughter Britney Weiss and her children, Cayden and Briella, all family of the huge heart of Mom. It would be amiss not to mention her everlasting guardian, Chloe, the wonderdog, who became her ears and sensitive of her needs, always at her side, who will mourn as we do. Love is never wasted. Our family is grateful for all the friends our mother touched with her life, especially Lois Hasker, who has been her dearest one for so many years. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 11:00AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 222 Missisquoi St., Enosburg Falls, VT with Rev. Richford, VT / Albion, IN - Jerry L. Butler
....show passed away Saturday November 23, at his home in Richford after a long, painful illness. Jerry was born on November 20, 1940 in Albion, Indiana. He grew up at Skinner Lake and loved to swim, earning him the nickname “Fino” which his high school buddies would still call him to this day. He graduated from Albion High School in 1958 and went into the Marine Corps. He served his country from 1958-1968 during which time he was bitten by a tarantula while stationed in California, shared a sleeping bag with a snake, broke his arm when a sniper tower he was in collapsed, and fought hard for our Country in the Vietnam War. He was extremely proud of being a Marine and retained all of his military qualities until the end of his life. When you saw Jerry, you would see him wearing his Vietnam Veteran hat most of the time. He would always stand during the parade to applaud his fellow brothers in service as they marched by. Jerry has held many jobs throughout his life, there is pretty much nothing he hasn’t tried and he was good at everything he did. Upon returning home from the war, Jerry became employed with the Norfolk and Western Railroad in Fort Wayne, Indiana as a Fireman and Engineer. Driving was a passion of his, as he loved to be on the road. He held several jobs driving anything from a dump truck, to semi, to hauling travel trailers straight off the assembly line in Ohio to dealerships all over the United States. After moving to Vermont, he worked for the State of Vermont Department of Corrections for many years, where the guys called him “Batman” because of his trademark long eyebrows that everyone knew him by. He drove an armored truck full of money for Berkshire Armored Car, there were always interesting stories about his trips, especially the time that they lost an entire bag of dimes on the Shelburne Road in Burlington…they recovered every dime but one. Working for MVM Security at the Tabor building in St. Albans is where he became a hero one day for saving the life of a woman that was having a heart attack. When the walking became too hard for him to do, he drove bus for GMTA and then drove people to medical appointments for Medicaid Transport and Ready To Go. Before he became ill, he used to love to hunt and fish up in the mountains around Montgomery, East Richford and Jay. Never got himself a deer, but he enjoyed the quiet, the nature and just being out in the woods. During one bear season he did get one and was very proud of it, even though it was small…he had it mounted and named him Bruin. He would also go “jeepin” with his maroon CJ-7 which he named “My Toy” up in those same mountains on weekends with some of his buddies from the correctional center from logging trails to rivers, the went through it all. Jerry had the biggest heart and was always willing to help out those in need. He would give you the shirt off his back or the last $5 in his wallet. Always stopping to help if someone were stranded on the roadside or to help if there had been an accident on the highway, he was a hero in more ways than one. He had a heck of a temper though and you never wanted to be on his bad side, because he would speak his mind no matter what was on it. That’s the Butler in him. Family was so important to Jerry and he always said you do for your family and whatever in his power he could do to help any of them out - he always did. Whether it was in Vermont or Indiana. He loved all of his children, grand-children and great-grandchildren so very much and was so proud of them all. Jerry touched many lives throughout his time in this world. He is no longer suffering or in pain. The scent of his Wild Country cologne, the unique sound of his cowboy boots on the floor with his uneven gate and the jangle of his keys will never be heard again - but he will forever be in our minds and hearts. Jerry is survived by his wife of 36 years, Judy (Broe) Butler, his daughter, Lorie Tipsord and her husband Bob of Fort Wayne, Indiana - his son, Joe Butler of Kendallville, Indiana - his daughter Leshia Elkins and her partner Jeff Jewett of Richford, VT - his son Kenneth Lagro of Colchester, VT - his son David Lagro of Richford, VT and his daughter Jerrie-Jo Barkley and her husband Adam of Richford, VT - his honorary Daughter Lisa Bergeron and her husband Tom of Enosburg, VT - his 20 grandchildren Anna, Travis, Lindsey, Christian, Stana, Jesse, Brittany, Josh, Joey, Jacob, Jeremiah, Ben, Caleb, Jordan, Kieran, Lucas, Cole, Alison, Lacie, Tabor and also 13 great-grand children. He is also survived by his sister Anna-Mame Scott of Dayton, Ohio. Jerry will also leave behind several nieces and nephews. His nieces Dina, Robin and Angie all of Fort Wayne, IN were very dear to his heart. Jerry is pre-deceased by his son John (1988), his brother Jim (2012), his mother Clara Jane “Peg” McNeal and his father Walter Lloyd “Jim” Butler. In keeping with Jerry’s wishes, there will be no funeral service or viewing hours, but he did want all of those who wanted to say goodbye and celebrate his life to gather at the American Legion in Richford. The family will be holding this memorial gathering on Saturday November 30th at the American Legion in Richford from 3-5pm. Please join them for Jerry’s last “OO-RAH”!
