Lyle James Cargill

He was born on September 3, 1920, in Morgan, to Bernie and Ola (Elliott) Cargill. He graduated from Derby Academy in the Class of 1938. On June 22, 1944, he married Cleora Ewens, who predeceased him on May 8, 1961. On October 19, 1963, he married Edith Nichols, who survives him.
He was a foreman for the State Highway Department. He was also a dairy farmer and logger during his lifetime.
He was an avid fisherman and Boston Red Sox Fan. He enjoyed playing cards, cutting firewood, making wooden toys and crafts and he loved his dogs.
He is survived by his wife Edith Cargill of Derby; his children: Dwight Cargill of Fairfax, Duane Cargill and his wife, Linda, of Montana, Colleen Gray and her husband, Reginald, of Charlotte, and Brian Cargill and his wife, Marilyn of Bristol; his stepchildren: Reginald Gray of Charlotte, Stuart Gray of Concord, and Gary Griffin of Brandon; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers: Everett and Clifton Cargill; his sister Florence Rivard; and by his brother-in-law Floyd Page. He was also predeceased by two nieces: Katherine Rivard and Sarah Cargill; and by his nephew Clifton Cargill Jr.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m., on Saturday, May 31, 2014, at the Morgan Center Cemetery, with the Reverend Robert Cargill officiating.

Brenda L. Colburn
....show , 70, of Barton died peacefully on December 12, 2013, in Barton.
She was born on April 5, 1943, in Franconia, New Hampshire, to Irvin and Winnie (Sanborn) Bickford. On August 4, 1962, she married Terry Colburn, who predeceased her on December 31, 2012.
She was raised on the family farm in West Glover, which was very dear to her heart. She graduated high school from Barton Academy in 1962. She worked as a caregiver to many children and elderly throughout her life.
She also worked at the Barton Village Office as a village clerk and retired after 15 years.
She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, knitting, going to yard sales and auctions. She also spent time camping with her husband in their camper.
One of her favorite hobbies was going to Bingo.
She was very passionate about her pets that she had throughout her life, especially her dogs.
She was a member of the West Glover Church and choir, and the West Glover Willing Workers.
She was the most loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
She is survived by her children: Marvin Colburn and his wife, Rhonda, of Barton, Mark Colburn and his wife, Hope, of Glover, Kelita Colburn of South Carolina, and Konnie Perkins and her husband, Eric, of Westmore; her grandchildren: Torre Colburn and David Meyer, Devin Colburn, Lauren Baker and her husband, Nicholas, and Brooke Perkins; her great-grandchild Karson Meyer; and by her brothers: Roland Bickford and his wife, Sharon, of Barton, and Ronnie Ouellette of Pennsylvania.
She was predeceased by three brothers and six sisters.
A graveside service will be held in the spring.

Brian Gillis
....show of Island Pond died suddenly on Monday, December 16, 2013, at his home, at the age of 56.
He was born in Newport on June 1, 1957, to Alice Ruth (Carr) Gillis and Archie Joseph Gillis.
He enjoyed kayaking, sailing, hiking, traveling, and working on his antique truck.
He attended North Country Union High School. He worked in Dallas, Texas, as a prep cook after high school for several years. He worked as an illustrator in Burlington, enjoyed working out doors at the Northwoods Stewardship Center, and at the state parks in Island Pond and Barton.
He will be greatly missed by friends and family.
He is survived by two sisters: Betty (Gillis) Biggs and Donna Chesney and her husband, Roger, of Island Pond; two brothers: David Gillis and his wife, Linda, of Yuma, Arizona, and Steve Gillis of Sterling, Alaska; and by eight nieces, six nephews, and 12 great-nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Archie Joseph and Alice Ruth Gillis; and by his brother Scott Allen Gillis.
There will be a service and burial to be announced in the spring.
Jeannine (Lemay) Marcotte
....show , 77, of Bellingham, Massachusetts, died on Friday, December 6, 2013, at Milford Regional Medical Center.
She was the beloved wife, for 59 years, of Gerald E. Marcotte.
Born in Island Pond, on November 22, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Emile and Pauline (Coe) Lemay.
She was a resident of Bellingham for 50 years, formerly of Barton, where she was raised.
She worked at Waters in Milford for 27 years until retiring in 2011.
She was an avid bingo player; a candlepin bowler, as was her father; an avid reader; and she enjoyed playing horseshoes.
Devoted to her family, she will be greatly missed by her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was the loving mother of Diane Brogan and her husband, Jack, of Acton, Maine, Debbie Marcotte and her fiancé, Tom, of Bellingham, Darlene Kass and her husband, Joe, of Windham, Maine, Gerald G. Marcotte and his wife, Kelly, of Cumberland, Rhode Island, and Dana Ebbs of Woonsocket, Rhode Island. She leaves her cherished ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was the sister of Paul Lemay of Vermont, Bernie Lemay of Missouri, Emily Morin of Tennessee, and Delores Lapierre of Newport.

Yvette L. Retallick

She was born on July 31, 1948, in Waterloo, Quebec, to Gaston Marc-Aurele and Marie-Jeanne (Racicot) Marc-Aurele. On October 25, 1969, she married John Retallick, who survives her.
She helped her husband on their farm in Richford.
She loved to walk her dogs, Willie and Feather, and getting to know all her neighbors. Her hobbies included reading, cooking, fishing, and she was always willing to lend a hand and be there for everyone.
She is survived by her husband John Retallick of Newport; her children: Mary Jane Fournier of Manchester, New Hampshire, and Gaston Retallick of Colorado Springs, Colorado; her sisters: Helene Racicot and her husband, Alfred, of Weare, New Hampshire; and Gertrude Tetreault and her husband, Andre, of Lowell; her brother-in-law Real Gauvin of Lowell; and by many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Beatrice Gauvin.

Francis M. Martin Jr.
....show , 84, of Barton died on December 16, 2013, in Newport.
He was born in Burlington on August 5, 1929, the son of Francis M. Martin Sr. and Helen E. (Sullivan) Martin.
He attended Cathedral schools in Burlington, and was in the Class of 1947.
He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in September of 1949. He served in Japan and Korea during the Korean War as an aircraft mechanic, crew chief, and flight test engineer. His final assignment was with the 10th Aerospace Defense Group/Squadron as a maintenance technician on nuclear-equipped Thor missiles at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California and Johnston Island Air Force Base. He retired from the Air Force in October of 1971 as a master sergeant.
He later worked for many years in the engineering department at the Veterans Administration Hospital in White River Junction, from where he retired again in 1989.
In his retirement, he did volunteer work at the VA Hospital, the Barton Public Library, and at North Country Hospital in Newport. He was also a volunteer member of the Hartford fire department for several years.
He was a parishioner at St. Pauls Church in Barton. He was a member of the American Legion Post #76 in Barton and also Post #2571 and DAV Chapter 3, both of White River Junction.
He enjoyed all sports and played many in his youth. He loved to fish, especially in the small rivers and brooks of his native Vermont. He also enjoyed reading, traveling, camping, and visiting other parts of the United States. He had a great interest in military history, particularly aircraft of World War II and the American Civil War battlefields, cemeteries, and other historic Civil War sites. He enjoyed the stories and history of both Confederate and Union soldiers, with a special interest in the stories and fate of the Vermont soldiers of that time.
He leaves four daughters: Corinne A. Martin of Burlington, Mary C. Martin of Lakewood, Colorado, Jacqueline G. Hanley and her husband, Phillip, of West End, North Carolina, Kathryn R. Higgins and her husband, Paul, of Raleigh, North Carolina; two sons: Francis Matt Martin III and his wife, Karen, of Sanford, North Carolina, and Thomas P. Martin and his wife, Rita, of Charlestown, New Hampshire; three brothers: Charles V. Martin of Ripton, John P. Martin and his wife, Sue, of Bakersfield, and James F. Martin of Georgia; three sisters: Mary Usher of Twentynine Palms, California, Patricia Laskowski of Milton, and Colleen Steen of Fairfax; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his son Christopher J. Martin in 1988, and by his brother Robert J. Martin in 2013.
Funeral services were held on December 20, in Barton, with military honors. Spring interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in White River Junction.

Ethel M. Rivers

She was born on June 27, 1917, in Windsor Mills, Quebec, a twin daughter of Archie and Gertrude (Paterson) Samson.
The family moved to Island Pond on November 22, 1919, where she spent most of the rest of her life.
She married Edward Rivers on October 21, 1947.
She was a telephone operator for more than five years during the 1940s, at which time she stopped working when dial systems became popular.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and doing crossword puzzles until she lost her sight.
Betsy Bumps, who was like a daughter to her, took her for rides and was a frequent companion.
She was a past Noble Grand of the Clyde River Rebekah Lodge, past president of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #80, and a life member of the VFW Auxiliary.
She had the distinction of having a twin sister, triplet sons, and twin granddaughters.
She is survived by her children: Lorraine Glasson of Island Pond, Maynard Rivers and his wife, Pamela, of Island Pond, Gary Rivers and his wife, Sheryl, of Madison, New Hampshire, and Robert Rivers and his wife, Rita, of Island Pond; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and by three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Gordon Sampson and his wife, Thora, of Newport; and by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Edward Rivers in 2010; her twin sister Elsie Bumps of Derby; her sons: Bruce and Steve Rivers; and by her granddaughter Tracy Glasson.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Lakeside Cemetery in Island Pond.

Eveline Caron Boucher Wagner

She was born on May 1, 1909, in St. Theophile, Canada, to Gedeon and Marie Letourneau Caron.
She worked many years at Barton Cleaners and the Ben Franklin store. After she retired, she became an avid golfer and spent many winters in Florida. Most recently, she played harmonica with the Bobbin Mill Players, which became her treasured extended family. We will miss her happy personality.
She is survived by a daughter, Millie Gaboriault; 12 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; three great-great-great-grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews. She had six generations.
She was predeceased by her parents; two husbands, Herve Boucher and Charles Wagner; a daughter, Marie Valois; a grandson, Lucien Valois; two sons-in-law; and by 14 brothers and sisters.
Services will be held in the spring.

Pauline Aime Mitchem
....show , 91, died on December 3, 2013, at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center, after a brief illness of cancer.
She was born on October 2, 1922, a daughter of Ernest and Ruth Dopp of Sheffield. She was born and raised in Sheffield.
After her husband died, she worked in Newport Center as a caretaker. Shortly afterwards, her sister, Velma Parenteau, and her husband, Walter, invited her to live with them in Westmore, where she became a big part of their family for 39 years. After the death of her sister, Velma, she devoted 19 years of her life taking care of her nephew, Leo Parenteau, who had Down syndrome, until he died in 2009.
Her passions were her family, playing bingo, doing 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzles, and going to her senior citizen center meal sites in Barton and Orleans.
Surviving children are: Ruth Rocheleau and her companion, Paul Demars, of St. Johnsbury, Lena Young of Kirby, and Willie and Nancy Mitchem of St. Johnsbury. Besides her children, she leaves her step-brother Larry Dopp and his wife, Caroline, of Newport; her sister Arlene Sacco of Ocala, Florida; as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her her husband Gerald; her daughter Althea Degreenia; as well as by several brothers and sisters.
Gerald "Gerry" D. Begin

He was born on March 12, 1985, in Palmer, Massachusetts, to Denise (Grenier) Begin and the late Robert Begin.
On May 4, 2013, he married the former Sara Davis, who survives him.
He was employed as a machinist for Appalachian Engineered Flooring in North Troy.
He enjoyed shooting his guns, fishing, collecting knives, watching The Walking Dead television show, and he loved his Mitsubishi 3000gt.
He is survived by his wife Sara Begin of Coventry; his mother Denise Begin of Coventry; his father- and mother-in-law Douglas Davis Jr. and Christine Davis of Orleans; his nephews: Mark Jr. and Isaac; his niece Lilly; his brother-in-law Mark Effrig Sr. and his wife, Amanda, of Derby Line; his sister-in-law Adorian Willis of Orleans; his brother-in-law Justin Willis of Newport Center; his aunt Jackie Bowen and her husband, Melvin, of West Charleston; his cousins: Lenny, Lisa, Luc, Donald, and Danny; his second cousins: Ben, Rose and Nathan; and by aunts and uncles from Canada, and many friends and other cousins.

Rodolph (Rudy) Lee Chase Sr.

He was born on May 23, 1932, in Beaver Creek, North Carolina, to Paul and Laura (Jones) Chase.
He retired as a first sergeant in the United States Army, where he served for 22 years and two tours in Vietnam. After retirement from the Army, he owned and operated the Craftsbury Village Store, and he worked for Sumner Farr, Refrigeration and Sales in Richmond. He started his own refrigeration and appliance business in Craftsbury and later branched out in Morrisville and Hardwick.
On July 31, 1954, he married Mary Ellen Fortune, who predeceased him in 2012.
He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge in Craftsbury, the American Legion in Hardwick, and the VFW in Morrisville. He was a member of the Refrigeration Engineers and Service Society. His hobbies included gardening and landscaping.
He is survived by his children: Rodolph (Rudy) L. Chase Jr. and his wife, Joanne, of Craftsbury, twins Raymond Carl Chase and his wife, Joyce, of Craftsbury, and Robin Stebbins and her husband, George, of Craftsbury; his grandchildren: Nicholas, Alexander, Benjamin, Kathleen, Julianne, Mykaela, Karen, Valerie, and Andrea; his great-grandchildren: Olivia, Averie, Elexia, Aubriella, Chase, and Aliya; his brothers: James Chase and his wife, Ella-Rae, of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Douglas (Mack) Chase and his wife, Peggy, of Vaas, North Carolina; and by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother Jimmie Chase, and by his sister Stella Baysden.

Claude F. Paquette

He was born in Irasburg on December 4, 1935, as the youngest son of Osias and Rose Amande Paquette.
He married his loving wife, Beverly E. Bullis, on October 16, 1954, who cared for him right up to the end of his life.
He enjoyed his family, puzzles, square dancing, bowling, listening to Burl Ives and watching Americas Funniest Home Videos. He was a great provider as an exceptional crane operator for Cote Contractors, Pizzagalli Construction, and eventually his own trucking company. He thoroughly enjoyed his work and the many miles up and down the East Coast. He was also a longtime volunteer of the Essex Junction Fire Department.
He is survived by his loving family: his wife of 59 years, Beverly; his daughter Shirley Fitzgerald and her husband, John, and their children: Jennifer, Mary and John; his son David and his wife, Melissa (Mazza), and their children: Shantel, Danielle, David Jr., Amy and MacKenzie; his son Bruce and his wife, Judy (Sorrell), and their children: Sarah and Christina; his son Kenneth and his wife, Lisa (Sicard), and their children: Ken Jr. and Chad; his daughter Sue-Ellen Kelly and her husband, Marty, and their children: Mackenzie and Marty III; his sisters: Theresa and Laurette; his brother Rudolph; along with his great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

He worked as a board sawyer for several sawmills throughout his life.
His hobbies included fishing, hunting, gardening, snowmobiling, tinkering on cars, and carpentry work as he built his own home.

Marion Holland Hall

She was born on April 1, 1920, in Athol, Massachusetts, to George and Annie (Hoyt) Holland. On January 27, 1946, she married Blaine Hall, who predeceased her on November 24, 2003.
She was an excellent quilter and would donate them to many area charities. She was a Civil War enthusiast.
She will be greatly missed by her friends and family.
She is survived by her children: Jeff Hall and his fiancée, Ana Fernandes, of Troy, and Jacqueline Mitchell and her companion, Clive Pratt, of Bronxville, New York. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Amy Caldwell and her husband, Tom, Christopher Mitchell and his wife, Anna, and Meghan Allen and her husband, Bill; her five great-grandchildren; her brother Milton Holland of California; her brother-in-law Richard Hall and his wife, Cynthia, of Newport; and by her sister-in-law Ellen Holland of Derby Line.

Father Wilfred Andre "Andy" Houle
....show , beloved son, brother and friend, died on December 4, 2013.
Father Houle was born to Adrien and Laurette (Paquette) Houle on September 6, 1948, and spent his childhood years on the familys dairy farm in Irasburg, where he learned the value of hard work and dedication.
He loved to travel as well as spend down time at his cabin in Starksboro.
Father Houle began his education at Sacred Heart Grade School in Newport, and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1966. He attended seminaries in Newark, New Jersey, and Barre. He completed his bachelors degree at St. John Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts. He was ordained to the Catholic priesthood on November 9, 1974, at St. Theresas Church in Orleans. He completed his Doctorate in adult education and faith formation, from St. Marys Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1985. He also attended the Institute for Continuing Theological Education at the Pontifical North American College at Vatican City in Rome, Italy.
Father Houle had the following assignments during his lifetime career in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Vermont: assistant pastor at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Middlebury, from November of 1974 until June of 1978; assistant pastor at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Burlington, from June of 1978 until June of 1980; assistant director at the Office of Religious Education in Burlington, from June of 1980 until June of 1982; director at the Office of Religious Education in Burlington, from 1982 until June of 1987; chaplain to the Sisters of Providence in Winooski, from June of 1980 until June of 1987; pastor at St. Patricks Parish in Fairfield, from June of 1987 until June of 1994; pastor at St. Peters Parish in Rutland, from June of 1994 until June of 2006; and pastor at Immaculate Conception (St. Marys) Parish in St. Albans, from June of 2006 until December 7, 2009. He retired due to health reasons on December 7, 2009. Since then, he has lived his life with grace and dignity as his brain became ravaged by frontotemporal degeneration disease, which is a category within the Alzheimers illness.
He is survived by his parents of Irasburg; five siblings: Elaine Baxter and her spouse, Thomas, of Geneva, Illinois, Diane Yunggebauer and her spouse, Fred, of Hartland, Lorraine Brasseur and her spouse, Bernard, of Cornish Flats, New Hampshire, Ronald Houle and his spouse, Colette (Gaboriault), of Irasburg, and Denis Houle and his spouse, Laura (Boomer), of Irasburg. Father Houle was the beloved uncle to Matthew and Johnathon Brasseur, Brian and Steven Baxter, Emily and Kaytlyn Houle, and Brandon Houle. He is also survived by a number of aunts and uncles and numerous cousins.
Funeral services were held on December 9, in Orleans.

Mrs. Powers was born on April 14, 1939, a daughter of Silas Sr. and Mildred Bean Scott.
On April 23, 1950, she married Dean Powers Sr.
She is survived by her children: Dean Powers Jr. and his wife, Brenda, Larry Powers and his wife, Sandy, and Jennifer Powers Allen and her husband, Dan; and by her grandchildren: Hailey, Anthony and Riley. She is also survived by her sisters: Annabelle S. Dreher of Florida, Margaret S. Barnes of Florida, and Birdena Collins and her husband, Raymond Sr.; her brother-in-law Larry Dopp and his wife, Caroline; her husbands brothers and their wives; and by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, who loved Charlotte. She will be missed by all.
She was predeceased by her parents; and by the following brothers and sisters: Walter, Alice, George Sr. and Lura Simpson, Shirley S. Kocis, Silas Jr. and Betty Calloway, Margaret S. Barnes and Don, Goldie-Mildred S. Collins, Wilma S. Dopp and Maxine S. Cory.
Reynold L. Paquette
....show , 83, of Newport died peacefully on December 1, 2013, in Newport.
He was born on June 26, 1930, in Orleans, to Armand and Yvonne (Menard) Paquette.
On November 27, 1950, he married Jeanne Guillette, who predeceased him in 2000.
He was a self-employed logger and he also owned and operated Rays Christmas Trees.
He enjoyed fishing, ice fishing, playing cards, hunting, maple sugaring, and wreath making.
He was a member of the Barton Fire Department and the 3rd Degree Barton and Orleans Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his daughters: Yvonne Steinhoff and her husband, Ernest, of Newport, Linda Keifer and her husband, Lloyd, of Clifton Park, New York, and Diane Burke and her husband, Ronald, of Newport; his grandchildren: Jonathan and Jeffrey Reed, Armand Paquette, John Drzewiczewski, Ronnie Paquette, Reanna Simpson, Felicia Paquette, Alan Tanguay, Jeremy Paquette and Allison Paquette; his great-grandsons: Brody Tanguay and Liam Reed; his siblings: Arlene Choquette and her husband, Bernard, of Cowansville, Quebec, Suzanne Dupries and her husband, Jacques, of Highgate Center, Joanne Turbide of Palm Harbor, Florida, Richard Paquette and his wife, Sherie, of Huntington Beach, Florida, and Claire Niles and her husband, Harry, of Brush Prairie, Washington; and by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sons: Michael and Marcel Paquette; his brother Maurice; and by his godchild Rachel Couture.
Funeral services were held on December 7, in Derby Line. Spring interment will be in St. Theresas Cemetery in Orleans.

Roy K. Shattuck
....show of Derby, the son of Harold and Aline Shattuck, died peacefully on December 1, 2013, in his seventy-ninth year, surrounded by his loving family.
After attending school in the Derby and Newport area, Mr. Shattuck served honorably in the U.S. Army as a senior paratrooper with the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team and later obtained prestigious Jump Master status while serving in Asia during the Korean War with the 101st Airborne Division.
He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion and the VFW.
After leaving the Army, he became a Master Electrician. He was a successful businessman; owning and operating Shattuck Electric in Derby for many years. Later in his career, he was honored to join his son, Brad, in his automobile business, Shattuck Motors, in Newport. Mr. Shattuck spent countless hours and was instrumental in the development of this 30-year-old company.
Mr. Shattuck was known to have a rebel spirit. He enjoyed parachuting out of airplanes, fast cars, motorcycling, and snowmobiling. He also had a love of the water. He enjoyed swimming, waterskiing and boating in the area lakes. In addition, he enjoyed wintering in Cocoa Beach, Florida.
His greatest pride was his family. He gave them the treasured gifts of his time and unconditional love.
He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 55 years, Beula-Jean (Jacobs); his son Brad and his wife, Bonnie Shattuck, of Derby; his daughter Brenda and her husband, John Pfeifer, of South Burlington; his daughter Susan Shattuck and her husband, Steven Bruhn, of Atlanta, Georgia; and by his beloved grandchildren: Hannah Shattuck-Pfeifer, Leah and her husband, Jesse Nash, and Emma, Justin and Jonathan Shattuck. Dad, Grampa, we love you best. He is also survived by his sister Susan Shattuck of Idaho Falls, Idaho; his aunt Ruth Austin of Newport; and by many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
A private service will be held at a later date with full military honors.

Roger W. Calloway Sr.
....show , 72, of Newport died on November 28, 2013, in Newport, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on August 8, 1941, in Newport Center, a son of Blaine and Natalie (Armstrong) Calloway. On June 18, 1960, he married Betty Hardy, who survives him.
He was a truck driver for Grays Paving. He loved watching NASCAR, wrestling, going camping, hunting, having family cookouts, and telling stories.
Mr. Calloway was a member of the American Legion Post #28 in North Troy.
He is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Betty Calloway of Newport; his children: Darlene Gaudette of Orleans, Roger Calloway Jr. and his fiancée, Lori Collins, of Derby, Dwayne Calloway and his fiancée, Tracy Archer, of Newport, Debbie Perry of Derby, and Donna Malshuk and her husband, Dennis, of Newport; his grandchildren: Dwayne Jr., Scott Perry, Travis Calloway, Amber Perry, Tonya Calloway, Jacob Calloway, Desiree Malshuk, Dakota Calloway, and Mykayla Malshuk; his five great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Calloway Sr., and his wife, Ilene, of Orleans; a sister, Priscilla Simpson, of Orleans; a stepbrother, Russell Calloway, of Ottawa; his special niece Linda Bennett and her husband, Norman, of Coventry; several nieces and nephews; a special friend, John Pelletier, of North Tory; and by his beloved dog, Buddy.
He was predeceased by Betty Scott and Louise Dionne, and by a special friend, Hillary Baker.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 5, at 2 p.m., at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, at 37 Lake Road in Newport, with the Reverend Paul Prince officiating.

Lorraine J. Maloney
....show , 84, of Newport Center died early Friday morning, November 29, 2013, at Bel-Aire Nursing Home after a very long battle with Alzheimers disease.
She was born on April 19, 1929, in Newport, the only child of the late Herbert and Florence (Selby) Tute. She grew up in Newport Center and graduated from Newport Center High School, Class of 1947, as valedictorian.
She enjoyed playing piano, throughout her life. She taught piano lessons for students for many years. She was a member of St. Marks Episcopal Church in Newport for many years and an organist there for 25 years. She grew up in her home with her parents, where the U.S. Postal Office was located. She had firsthand knowledge of the postal service and eventually became a postal clerk. In 1975, she was sworn in as postmaster in Newport Center. She retired in 1992. She was very active with the National League of Postmasters, and the Retired League of Postmasters.
Mrs. Maloney was an active citizen in Newport Center. She was on the zoning and planning boards, and she was an auditor and a justice of the peace for many years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter in Troy and later in Newport. She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Newport. She enjoyed traveling, camping, reading, arts and crafts, playing darts, and animals.
In her retirement years, she was a volunteer for many organizations, including: RSVP, North Country Hospital, Traffic Safety One, and Compassionate Friends. She was very instrumental in forming the Victims Assistance Program. Mrs. Maloney had a big heart and a great smile. She would help anyone who was in need, and she really enjoyed visiting with people.
One of her favorite jobs was bookkeeping. She enjoyed working with numbers. She was a bookkeeper for a few years with building contractor Malcolm Pickel, and in earlier years for the Edwin Earl Insurance Co.
She was married on October 27, 1947, to Daniel Maloney. They had two children: Thomas of Newport and Betty of Newport Center. A son, Michael Maple, died in 1973. Mr. Maloney died in 1989.
Her parents, and a very special aunt, Rotha Schayltz, and family friend Larry Allard also predeceased her. She had many friends through the years, which included Thelma Moulton, Betty Murphy, and Marilyn Forbes, as well as her retired postmaster friends: Betty Olsen, Carletta Legacy, Millie Fournier, and Sylvia Cramer, to name a few.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 4, at 11 a.m., at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, at 37 Lake Road in Newport, with the Reverend Cameron Miller officiating. Spring interment will be held at the Newport Center Cemetery. A reception will follow the service at the Elks Lodge in Derby.
Mrs. Maloney had a great love for animals, especially her beloved cat Buster. Flowers are nice, but her wish was for contributions to be made to the Friends of Felines Foundation, P.O. Box 1316, Newport, Vermont 05855.
Brenda J. Rafferty
....show , 57, of Derby died suddenly on November 24, 2013, in Newport.
She was born September 18, 1956, in Newport, to Howard and Joyce (Perkins) Blanchard.
Ms. Rafferty was a former member of the Barton EMT, and she volunteered for the Pope Memorial Frontier Animal Shelter, North Country Hospital and Northeast Kingdom TV.
She is survived by her children: Jessica Poirier and her husband, Jeff, of Glover, Christy Loukes and her husband, Karl, of Newport, Jason Rafferty and William Rafferty of Newport; her grandchildren: Holly, Cody, Alexis, Hannah, Mitchell, Chantal, Kloie, and Karl Jr.; and by her siblings: Eugene Childers and his wife, Jean, of Brandon, Michael Blanchard of Orleans, and Susan Mugford and her husband, Craig, of East Montpelier.
Funeral services were held on December 2 at the New Hope Bible Church in Irasburg, with Pastor George Lawson officiating.
