A tribute to
Lillian Hoyt
....show : Orleans loses an icon
by Nick Burdick
With the same quiet dignity that she has always been noted for, on November 18, Lillian Hoyt took her last breath, closed her eyes, and entered eternity. She was in her own bed on School Street with her daughter Mary Lou, and Lillians constant companion, Pauline Fairbrother, at her side.
Four years after graduating high school, Lillians life would change drastically. Darrell Hoyt, a young man seven years her senior, had spotted her and they dated. Then, in 1932, right in the middle of the Depression, they married, and Lillian stopped working so she could raise a family. They were blessed with Ross (who died a few years ago), Shirley, Bob (Robert), and Rick. Then came the baby, the last of the clan, Mary Lou. With a smile, because Lillian loved all of her children like there was no tomorrow, she was quoted saying that after Mary Lou, she just knew it was time to stop!
Anyone who lived in Orleans within the last 90 years or so has known the Hoyt family. Darrell was the first mail carrier in Orleans and retired from that position after walking more than 150,000 miles around Orleans Village. He also played the organ at the Orleans Federated Church for 50 years or so. He died in 2002.
Lillians love of children was well documented. After her own children were grown and gone, she took a job as one of the librarians at the Jones Memorial Library and continued there for many years. She would gladly help you find whatever book you needed, and she just as quickly would let you know you were making too much noise. Other than the holidays, when family always gathered around the matriarch, Lillian also loved June, when Mary Lou would fly home from California to stay with her for about six weeks.
Mary Lou would bring Nancy Lavoie with her, and Martha Jean Sylvester would join them. This last summer, when the girls were having great fun, Lillian told them they laughed as much as they did when they were in high school.
Lillian would also remind them of things they did as children, such as when Mary Lou and Randy Smith picked all of the tulips at the Manse, where Randys grandparents, the Reverend and Mrs. Jack Filler lived. They picked off all the cups and left the stems. Or the time that she and Mary Lou went to church one Sunday and then Mary Lou told her she couldnt go to church anymore because it made dinner too late.
Darrell had left word that he didnt want a church funeral as he had been to enough of them. He wanted a graveside service and that was all. It happened in June of 2002, at the family lot in Pleasant View Cemetery, in Orleans. Lillian had left the same instructions, adding that she wanted to be buried in June, the same as Darrell. That will happen this coming June, and family and friends will gather to say a final goodbye.
This family has touched Orleans in many ways. Darrell loved to tell people that he wasnt born in Orleans, he was born in Barton Landing. The name was changed to Orleans just after he was born. Their house was always open to anyone, and you could walk in and talk about anything and they loved it.
Lillian was as sharp as a tack, right up to the day she died. After she got to where she didnt go out much, she still kept track of her community. Right up until my mother died last February, Lillian sent her a small note every week to say hi even knowing that mothers dementia had reduced her to not knowing anyone or anything. Lillian sent notes each week to many other people she had known.
After 104 years, Lillian Wheeler Hoyt has laid down her head and gone to be with Darrell and Ross. But her memory will live on in Orleans and in the hearts of her family and friends for another 104 years or longer.

Burton Kenneth Daggett
....show , 70, best known as Joe, died on Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at North Country Hospital in Newport, of natural causes related to multiple sclerosis.
He lived in Holland with his wife, Vicki.
He was born on August 21, 1943, in Newport, the son of Bernard Fred Daggett and Thelma Willey Daggett. He grew up on the Daggett family farm in Holland, and he graduated from Derby Academy in 1962.
Shortly after graduating, he left the family farm and bought a dump truck. He was very proud of the work he did to help build the Northern Vermont segment of Interstate 91 in the mid-1960s.
On June 15, 1968, he married Vicki Cowens, the love and angel of his life. He sold his dump truck in 1970 and built a home on his Uncle Teds farm on the Morgan Road in Derby.
He and his wife lived there for 25 years and raised their two children, Andrew and Jennifer, before they moved back to Holland in 1995.
He loved animals and had many beloved pets in his lifetime, including his beloved dog, Virgil, who served as his faithful companion once he was no longer able to drive.
After selling his dump truck, Mr. Daggett went to work for Pike Industries as a heavy equipment mover in 1970. He worked for Pike for 15 years before making a change to driving milk truck in the mid-1980s. He worked as a milk truck transport driver for the balance of his trucking career.
He loved the open road and he loved to drive truck. He was meticulous with the care of his vehicles and took a great deal of pride in keeping his trucks spotless, inside and out. He was also a very capable mechanic and could identify and fix any problem he ever encountered with any motorized vehicle that he ever drove. In addition, he possessed a very keen, analytical and innovative mind and was often sought out for solutions to problems. After retiring from trucking in the early 1990s, he served as selectman for the town of Holland and volunteered many hours with the town road crew. He found a great deal of pleasure serving in these civic roles.
He realized his greatest enjoyment in life from spending time with the people that he loved. He was an extremely devoted family man.
He and his family will forever be grateful to his many caregivers over the last 20 years of his life. He was most blessed by the unconditional, unwavering, selfless care of his wife, whose complete devotion allowed him to live within his home with as much quality of life as possible throughout the duration of his illness.
Mr. Daggett was a model man, husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend.
He had an incredibly strong work ethic and admirable sense of honor and integrity. He was selfless, determined, and would always do more for others than he would ever do for himself. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a strong sense of purpose. Ironically, his strength was never more evident than throughout the course of his disease. As his physical body failed, his resolve and resilience strengthened. He was a remarkable example of strength through adversity.
He is survived by his wife Vicki; his son Andrew and his wife, Erin, of Brookfield, New Hampshire; his daughter Jennifer and her husband, Ronald Patenaude, of Holland; and by his grandchildren: Katelyn, Jacob, and Molly Patenaude, and Autumn, Audrey, and Andrea Daggett. He so very much loved life and enjoyed each and every day. He took such great pride in his two children, Ben and Kate, who he loved and adored beyond words. There is not one thing that they said or did that he was not totally interested in. They, along with his father, Paul Wally, were truly his best friends.
Mr. Meunier was so proud of the hunting camp that he owned and built with his dad and brother-in-law. He looked so forward to those two weeks in November that they spent there good times, good stories, good friends, good food. How many suppers did he plan and cook for many of his friends at Big Buck Lodge! And, of course, we cant forget the ice fishing in the winter on Lake Memphremagog. He spent many hours with DeAnn, Ben, and Kate in the ice shack fishing for perch. He enjoyed people stopping by for a visit at the shack so much, he so looked forward to that. He drilled many holes for his family and friends looking for that hot spot where the fish were hiding. There was the famous chart in his basement that kept track daily and yearly of how many fish were caught each day, not to mention who caught the most fish, he or DeAnn.
He was an extraordinary human being with an endless supply of caring and compassion for anyone that he crossed paths with. He was a great son, husband, father, brother, and uncle. He was a great friend to so many people. He will be missed by so very many people.

Frederick C. Kinsey
....show , 87, of Albany, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died on October 29, 2013, at North Country Hospital in Newport, from complications from an undiagnosed collapsed lung, which he got cutting wood.
He was born on December 18, 1925, to Frederick C. Kinsey Sr. and Geneva (Whitcher) Kinsey, at their home on the family farm in Barton. After his father left, he and his brothers, David and Bob, helped their mother run the farm. For years they ran a milk route in town. He graduated in 1944 from Barton Academy where he was in the Future Farmers of America (FFA). He even traveled to the 1946 FFA convention in St. Louis, where he was named an American Farmer. He tried to join the armed forces after graduation, but his knees and necessary farm work kept him on the home front.
He and his brother Bob were outstanding athletes at Barton Academy and both were involved in town-team baseball for years after the war. He had caddied at the Barton Country Club since his youth, and had a lifelong love of golf.
Mr. Kinsey married Louise Rowell on June 7, 1947. They soon started a farm raising chickens, and had Helen, Leland, and Blaine while on the South Albany farm. In 1952, they moved to County Road and started their dairy farm. Natalie and Kyle were born there. Brother Bob married Louises sister, Eunice, and also farmed, and they all ran almost joint operations for years.
Fred and Louise kept farming until 1968, and they continued to live in their home even after the animals and much of the land were sold.
Fred took a job at E.M. Brown & Son in Barton, delivering grain and building supplies, and often even unloading railroad cars of grain with a scoop shovel. He also had side businesses of lawn care in summer, cutting and selling firewood year-round, and running the family sugaring operation. When he retired from E.M. Brown, his other work only increased. As part of his lawn care, he kept the Barton Fire Department grounds, and the East Craftsbury Presbyterian Church, where he and Louise were members, and the Manse grounds, mowed and trimmed gratis.
As a young man, he had played drums in local bands at dance halls and street dances, playing his loved swing music. His musical ability led him to be a member of the church choir for much of his adult life.
Natalie and her husband, Tom, were able to take him and his family to Scotland a number of times. He was always interested in history, particularly the Civil War, in which his great-great-grandfather had fought, and been captured, and survived the steamship Sultana explosion while returning prisoners-of-war, which killed 1,900.
He was a participant in the local Civil War Roundtable, and had traveled with groups and family to many of the battlefields of that war, and the terrible prison where his ancestor had been held.
All those who knew him will miss his ready wit and smile.
Private burial in Andersonville Cemetery, where his eldest daughter, Helen, and infant son, Nolan, are also buried. A service of resurrection was held at the East Craftsbury Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Crystal Lake Falls Historical Association of Barton, of which he was a member for years; or ECHO, an anti-hunger organization, 17391 Durance Road, North Fort Meyers, Florida, 33917.
