Albert Vaart
....show died on October 26, 2013, at his home in Jay, just short of 96 years of age.
He was born on November 5, 1917, in Tartu, Estonia.
He had been a resident of the Northeast Kingdom since 1989, arriving from New Jersey soon after his retirement.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a pilot for the Estonian Air Force and then the German Air Force on the Eastern Front against the Soviet Union. He was shot down in February of 1945, but he parachuted to safety. Badly injured, he was found by German forces and transported to a hospital near Munich. Over many months, he was restored to health.
He emigrated to New York City in 1951, where he was reunited with his wife, Hedvig, and their young son, Andres, who had arrived in America the year before and whom he had not seen since Andres birthday late in 1944.
In New York City, Mr. Vaart went through a dozen years of night school, eventually earning a PhD in civil engineering. He found work in the design and manufacture of paper goods, developing and deploying new computer design systems with the West Virginia Paper and Pulp Company.
His avocation and love was music. In the New York City area, he sang in and led choirs in the Estonian community and in the Estonian Russian Orthodox Church.
After his retirement at 70, and widowed, he moved to the Northeast Kingdom, buying a home near Troy. The location reminded him of his native Estonia, and he wanted to be near a flight school comrade living nearby in Canada. Amazingly, Mr. Vaart returned to flight school in Newport. At the age of 75, he soloed again for the first time since the war.
Helping him build his Vermont life was a local resident, Clemence Leblond, who had sold him his house near Troy. The two developed a deep friendship and love. Clems love and loyalty sustained Albert through numerous illnesses and the growing weakness of his later years. They traveled together, ate together, and sang and played together at Alberts electronic organ.
He left behind Clem and the many members of her family that supported the two they were a second family to him. Along with them, surviving are Andres and his wife, Tracy, of Reston, Virginia; and Alberts grandson, Ryan, and his wife, Lynn, of Arlington, Virginia.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 31, at 3 p.m., at the Brownington Village Cemetery, with the Reverend Timothy Naples officiating.

Kenneth M. Powers
....show , 99, died on September 27, 2013, just months short of his hundredth birthday goal.
Although his passing leaves his family deeply saddened, the memories he created and the lives he shaped will remain as his legacy.
His life began on a cold winters morning in Charleston, on March 4, 1914. The third of five children born to John and Etta (Labounty) Powers, his lifelong resilience was evident even in his childhood. Following the divorce of his parents, he endured the hardship of living among various homes where he failed to receive the care and compassion he deserved. Despite this, he emerged as a loving, dedicated man, who always put his family first, even when it meant noteworthy personal sacrifice.
In May of 1934, he married his cherished wife, Esther Davignon Powers, with whom he shared 49 years of marriage and seven children. He spent endless days working as a farmhand and deep within the Vermont woods, even on the coldest New England days that left him nearly frozen. Whether sick, bruised, or exhausted, his priority was to make sure that his family was well taken care of and loved. His work ethic never waned and continued well into his nineties, as he busied himself puttering around, visiting garage sales, and tending his half-acre garden.
Although his formal education never reached beyond grade school, his innate wisdom and intellectual curiosity ensured that he learned to read and write better than most high school graduates today. His love of reading, a gift that he passed on to his offspring, spanned nearly eight decades, with the Bible and his treasured Western novels serving as his all-time favorites.
His inherent talents extended well beyond reading. His self-taught ability to play the spoons, harmonica, and guitar delighted his children and grandchildren, and made summer nights at camp on Brownington Pond unforgettable. In addition, his athletic skills kept the grandkids occupied for hours. In fact, there isnt a grandchild who doesnt affectionately remember intensely-fought badminton games that he refused to lose or the black eyes earned by those brave enough to challenge him to a game of catch. In spite of his intense competitiveness and temperament, he always had some kind of candy available as a peace offering and a token of his unwavering love.
Heartbroken after his wifes untimely death in 1983, Mr. Powers faltered in sadness until he met and later married his second wife, Lillian Flanders Powers, whose patience and love fortified him for 27 years until her death in 2010.
He was also predeceased by his grandson Dwight Powers in 1966, and his fourth child, Dale Powers, in 1989.
He is survived by his son Richard Powers and his wife, Eleanor, of Enosburg; his son Norman and his wife, Susan Powers, of Middletown, Connecticut; his daughter Charlotte Powers Webster of Las Vegas, Nevada; his son Larry and his wife, Jan Powers, of Newport; his daughter Jane Moulton of Orleans; his son Robert Powers of Rocky Mount, Virginia; 16 grandchildren; and by many great-grandchildren.
As he requested, a simple graveside memorial service, with the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating, will be held on Saturday, October 5, at 11 a.m., before his ashes are laid to rest beside his beloved Esther in the West Village Cemetery in West Charleston.
Because he so dearly loved animals, including those whose companionship brightened his life over the many years, donations may be made to the Pope Memorial Frontier Animal Shelter, 502 Strawberry Acres, Newport, Vermont 05855, in lieu of flowers.
His family will carry their memories and love for Dad and Grandpa close within their hearts for years to come. They will forever remain grateful for the talents, humor, and love that he shared with them, and which made their lives all that more special. May he rest in eternal peace and watch over them from above until they reunite again one day.
