Ames, Gail D.
....show DELMAR Gail D. Ames, a former longtime resident of Newport, Vermont, passed away unexpectedly at her home in Delmar on April 8, 2013. Those close to her had witnessed her courageous battle with cancer and had been encouraged by her strength and positive medical results. Indeed, life's mysteries and our limitation for comprehending them have only added to the confusion and grief that her passing has meant to her family and friends. Gail was born in Hanover, New Hampshire on September 23, 1945, the daughter of the late Olive (Jenne) and the late Edward S. Doubleday, also longtime residents of Newport, Vermont. Gail graduated from Newport High School in June 1963. Gail attended the University of Vermont from 1963 through 1966 and earned her Bachelor of Education degree from Lyndon State College in May, 1978. She taught kindergarten at Sacred Heart Elementary School in Newport, Vermont for many years and recently served as a Director of Elementary School Programs at the Bethlehem (NY) YMCA, a position that provided the greatest joy and satisfaction to her until declining health and medical treatment forced her to retire in September, 2011. Her love for children of all ages and her consistent devotion to their education and nurturing were constant sources of personal enjoyment and comfort throughout her life. Her pure love of teaching and molding of young minds and spirits knew no bounds or limits and she was rewarded countless times over by the bright smiles and effervescence that only a child can truly provide. In March, 1966 she married Roger F. Ames of Middle-burgh, beginning a joyous, wonderful life that took them to many locations together including military stops in Alabama, New Mexico, and New Jersey, and career residences in Rochester, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Argentina, and Peru and finally to Newport, Vermont and Delmar where they spent their last months together. Gail is survived by her husband of 47 years; a daughter, Jennifer Bailey, and her husband Russell and their children Michael, Katie, and Maggie, of Delmar; a son, Edward Ames, and his wife Helen and their daughter Sasha of New York City; and another son, Christopher Ames, and his wife Darcy and their children Jackson, Harrison, and Grant of Fort Myers, Florida. She is also survived by a sister, Joan Kelly and her husband, Timothy of East Freedom, Pennsylvania and their sons, Matthew Kelly of Medford, Massachusetts and Jeffrey Kelly, of Sherman, Texas. Gail was loved and adored by her husband, children, grandchildren, and other family members. She was also loved by her many wonderful friends at the First United Methodist Church of Delmar. She was a constant source of unconditional love, devotion to family, and a warm, kind smile for everyone she met. She had that magnificently simple, yet consummately complex ability to see only the good things in family members and endearing friends. Criticism of anyone and the utterance of any unkind words just did not exist in her social demeanor and conduct. Her enduring, never give-up love for and commitment to her family, the absolute joy she received from her friends, and the uncommon kindness she always gave to others were the only constants in her life that she placed above her other great loves - The Boston Red Sox, Duke University Basketball, and any spot on the planet where one could quietly enjoy the magnificent splendor of the oceans. Calling hours will be held at Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Avenue, Delmar on Saturday, April 13, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, April 14, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at The First United Methodist Church, 428 Kenwood Avenue, Delmar. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in Gail's name be made to the Jimmy Fund. Donations can be made by mail to The Jimmy Fund, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445

BERLIN - Vincent Illuzzi Sr.
....show , 93, who lived on the Barre-Montpelier Road in Berlin for 54 years, died on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center, where he had been staying for the past several weeks. He was born in Giovinazzo, a port city on the Adriatic coast in southern Italy, on July 22, 1920. He attended school until eighth grade and then received training to be a granite sculptor. In 1937, he immigrated to the United States, where he learned how to speak English, and eventually settled in Barre to work as a granite sculptor and carver. He sent part of his earnings to his mother back in Italy, to help support the family that remained there. On Jan. 21, 1943, during World War II, still an Italian citizen, he volunteered to join the U.S. Army. A photograph at the Montpelier Historical Society shows him with a group of other enlistees in the front of the Washington County Court House, ready to depart for war. He was stationed in Iceland as a translator. During the war, Army officials realized he wasn't a U.S. citizen and ordered him to become one because the U.S. was at war with Italy. He was honorably discharged Jan. 5, 1946. In 1952, he married Angela Piscitelli, who was also born in Giovinazzo, at St. Patrick's Old Cathedral in New York City. She predeceased him in 1993. As a self-employed sculptor, he was commissioned to carve monuments, which are located in parks and cemeteries across America. One commission was for a large granite sculpture to be located at P Street, between 22nd Street and 23rd Street, N.W., Washington, D.C., near Dupont Circle. It was dedicated to the liberation, freedom and independence of all citizens of captive nations and stands alongside the bronze statue of Taras Shevchenko. Both are owned by the U.S. Park Service and cataloged by the Smithsonian Institution. The monument was authorized by the 86th Congress on Aug. 31, 1960, and unveiled by former President Dwight D. Eisenhower on June 27, 1964, with sculptor Illuzzi in attendance. Another monument he created commemorates the role of U.S. soldiers in Vietnam. Located at the East Hills Kiwanis Memorial Park in Richland Township near Johnstown, Pa., the granite statue of a U.S. soldier holding a Vietnamese child was dedicated in June 1974. In May 2007, vandals broke off the statue's head and stole it. Described as "priceless" by one community leader, it is also cataloged by the Smithsonian. Illuzzi offered advice on how to repair the damage, but by 2007 he was personally too old to repair it. After retiring as a sculptor, he returned to his trade one last time when he volunteered to carve a book of learning for the lobby of the Barre City Elementary School. He was a member of the Barre Historical Society and an early supporter of the restoration of the Old Labor Hall in Barre, and he supported creation of the Barre Granite Museum at the Jones Brothers granite shed, where he carved many monuments, including the one in Washington. The shed needed roof and foundation work to preserve it for future generations. He was a member of the Montpelier Gun Club, American Legion Post 10, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 790 and Moose Barre Lodge 1391, among other organizations. Although self-employed, he joined the Granite Cutters Association as an associate member to support the collective bargaining rights of granite workers. He is survived by three sons, Vincent, of Derby, and his wife, Eileen, and their son, Vincent, Frank, of Brattleboro, and Joseph, of Berlin, who lived with and took care of him for the past 10 years; and a sister, Giovanni, of Bitonto, Italy, who survives him. He was predeceased by four brothers and one sister. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m. at St. Monica Church in Barre. Burial will be at Berlin Corner Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, Aug. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Guare & Sons Funeral Home, 30 School St., Montpelier.
