Arthur Palmer French
....show , born May 9, 1929, died August 26, 2013
these trees shall be my books
And in their barks my thoughts I'll character;
That every eye which in this forest looks
Shall see thy virtue witness'd everywhere.
As You Like It, Act 3, Scene 2, quoted by Arthur French in Gateway, Northfield Mount Hermons yearbook in 1949.
Although born in New York City on May 9, 1929, Arthur Palmer French lived much of his life across from a glacial lake in rural Vermont. Together with his identical twin brother Wayne, he was raised in an historic farmhouse in Westmore; attended the same one room school where his father had studied; and learned to swim and fish in the summer, as well as ski and skate in the winter. Living through the worst of the Depression, he remembered when working lumber mills lined the shores of Lake Willoughby and ice was harvested for sale as far away as Boston. He and his brother posed for paintings by well-known regionalist painter Paul Sample, who summered in the area, and cycled seven miles into Barton each week to participate in Boy Scouts. He knew many local trails, leading hikes up Wheeler, Mount Pisgah, Bald Mountain and to Balance Rock when he worked at Camp Songadeewin near Willoughbys North Beach. As a teenager, he attended dances at the Community Hall in Westmore and the Shadow Lake Dance Hall in Glover.
In 1945 he left with his brother to attend Mount Hermon School in Northfield, MA, where he excelled in sports. Winning letters for skiing, cross-country and track, he was later nominated for the Northfield Mount Hermon Athletic Hall of Fame. Arthur and Wayne graduated in 1949 to enter the University of Vermont, where they continued to be involved in sports. While on the ski teams at both Mount Hermon and UVM, the twins took pleasure in posing together for team photographs, a Rorschach mirror image with their identical faces and identical black and white Reindeer sweaters placed side by side in the center.
During summers off from college, he worked at the Ethan Allen Furniture Mill in Orleans, where he met Mary Karlene Dawson. They married in 1952, the same year Arthur joined the navy to study electronic communications. His daughter Katherine was born in 1953 while he was stationed on Treasure Island near San Francisco. Assigned for a two year tour of duty to Japan, Arthur took advantage of an available darkroom to become a gifted amateur photographer and traveled through the Japanese countryside as a tourist. Pursuing his youthful interests, he went skiing in Honshu and climbed Mount Fugi, taking care to purchase the customary walking stick and obtain stamps burned into the wood at progressive stations on his way to the summit. When he returned to the United States, he and his family lived on Skaggs Island, a former center for top secret radio surveillance, for a year before returning to Vermont.
Enrolled back at UVM, he graduated with a degree in agricultural economics in 1959 and lived in Burlington for four years while working at General Electric. His children Melanie, David and Daniel were born there in 1956, 1959 and 1962, respectively. In 1963 the family moved to Concord, NH, where they lived for the next 32 years. Arthur found work at Sprague Electric and then for the State on New Hampshire in professional positions that were all related to economics and statistical analysis. However, vacations and many weekends were spent at the house where hed grown up. He taught his children to ski and took them on hikes around Lake Willoughby, sometimes tracing locations of places described in poems by Robert Frost. Like many Vermonters, he went deer hunting. His idea of a perfect vacation was to spend two weeks cutting enough wood to feed the wood burning stove that heated his house.
After suffering his second heart attack, he moved back to Vermont in 1992 where he took retirement very seriously as an active member of the Westmore Community. Serving at a Town Lister and member of the Zoning Committee, he helped chart the exact location of the original county road, completed a geological survey with oversize aerial views, and amazed fellow listers with his ability to locate old boundary markers. As a volunteer at the Old Stone House Museum in Brownington, he would greet visitors to explain about early tools and farm implements. Interest in genealogy resulted in a well-documented family history that explored lines of immigration from Halstead, England in the mid-1500s.
Arthur French finished what he started and did it thoroughly. Picking up a copy of Return of the Native at the Westmore Attic Auction, he regretted not completing the book in high school, and became a diligent Thomas Hardy scholar, reading not only the complete works, but also viewing every film inspired by the books. Remembering a teacher reading aloud from Northwest Passage, he went back to research every piece of information he could find about Rogers Rangers, convinced that the party had beat its retreat from Canada along Vermonts Route 5A. They must have walked past the house, hed remark. But we cant be sure. I wasnt home at the time.
However, residents of Westmore would observe that Arthur French was often at home, enjoying retirement from the geranium filled porch of the restored house where hed lived as a child. Survived by Mary, his wife of 60 years, as well as his twin brother Wayne and wife Nancy, all of Westmore, VT, Arthur is also survived by his children: Katherine French and Tim Hamilton of Cambridge, MA; Melanie French of Westmore, VT; David and Jeannie French of Hopkinton, NH; Daniel French and Diane Curtin of Concord, NH; his grandchildren: Mary Hamilton French of Cambridge, England; Leah Hamilton French of Houston, TX; Ben Kindregan of Boston, MA; Billy and Matt French of Hopkinton, NH; and Nicolas Curtin French of Concord, NH. He is also survived by his niece and nephews: Steve and Kathy French; Tori and Ralph Fletcher; and Mike and Karyn French; and grandnieces and nephew Jason and Megan Fletcher and Tabitha French.
Services will be held at the Westmore Community Church on Sunday, September 1 at 1 pm, followed by refreshments in the Community Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Westmore Community Church, Hinton Hill Road, Lake Willoughby, Orleans, VT 05860.

He was born on May 20, 1928 in Brownington, VT a son of Robert and Blanche (Metcalf) Marsh. Slayton graduated from Orleans High School with many stories about his love of team basketball and working the woodlots with his FFA classmates. On November 2, 1947 he married his love, Patricia Loveland, who survives him. Mr. Marsh was an incredibly strong man with an equally strong work ethic. He truly enjoyed the countless hours spent remodeling the huge and beautiful family home, planting and working in his bountiful gardens of vegetables and berries, mowing the expansive lawns, painting and repainting the home he so loved, and somehow always finding time to entertain and play with his children, their friends, his grandchildren and their friends. Nothing got in the way of the love and devotion he felt and showed to his family. Hugs and smiles were his calling card. Slayton felt and showed the bond he held with his beloved Brownington and the community members he called friends. His sense of pride in this community was often shown when he was either called upon or volunteered his time and talent in the form of carpentry and painting of the church, the cemetery fence, replacing blown fuses so the service could go on, building many church and ladies aid room fires, and always delivering a fresh, warm, homemade pie to any neighbor who might need one. As the leader of his family, Slayton could anticipate the need or want of each individual, and was always one step ahead of those needs. Slayton loved playing sports in all seasons. Baseball, basketball in his barn court, hiking Mt. Pisgah with his children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren even at 80 years old, horseshoeing during his lunch breaks with Butch, hunting, fishing, and after-dark hide and seek with his grandsons, and watching football and hockey on TV were all what made his life so fun.
