Kenneth M. Powers
....show , age 99, ended his journey in this
life on September 27th, 2013, just months short of his
100th birthday goal. Although his passing leaves his
family deeply saddened, the memories he created and
the lives he shaped will remain as his legacy.
Kenneth's life began on a cold winter's morning in
Charleston, Vermont, on March 4th, 1914. The third
of five children born to John and Etta (Labounty)
Powers, Kenneth's lifelong resilience was evident
even in his childhood. Following the divorce of his
parents, he endured the hardship of living among
various homes where he failed to receive the care
and compassion he deserved. Despite this, Kenneth
emerged as a loving, dedicated man, who always
put his family first, even when it meant noteworthy
personal sacrifice.
In May of 1934, Kenneth married his cherished wife,
Esther Davignon Powers, with whom he shared
49 years of marriage and seven children. Kenneth
spent endless days working as a farmhand and deep
within the Vermont woods, even on the coldest New
England days that left him nearly frozen. Whether
sick, bruised, or exhausted, his priority was to make
sure that his family was well taken care of and loved.
His work ethic never waned and continued well into
his nineties, as he busied himself puttering around,
visiting garage sales, and tending his half-acre garden.
Although his formal education never reached beyond
grade school, his innate wisdom and intellectual
curiosity ensured that he learned to read and write
better than most high school graduates today. His
love of reading, a gift that he passed on to his
offspring, spanned nearly eight decades, with the
Bible and his treasured Western novels serving as his
all-time favorites.
His inherent talents extended well beyond reading.
Kenneth's self-taught ability to play the spoons,
harmonica, and guitar delighted his children and
grandchildren, and made summer nights at Camp
on Brownington Pond unforgettable. In addition,
his athletic skills kept the grandkids occupied for
hours. In fact, there isn't a grandchild who doesn't
affectionately remember intensely-fought badminton
games that he refused to lose or the black eyes earned
by those brave enough to challenge him to a game
of catch. In spite of his intense competitiveness and
temperament, Kenneth always had some kind of
candy available as a peace offering and a token of his
unwavering love.
Heartbroken after Esther's untimely death in 1983,
Kenneth faltered in sadness until he met and later
married his second wife, Lillian Flanders Powers,
whose patience and love fortified Kenneth for 27
years until her passing in 2010. Kenneth was also
predeceased by his grandson, Dwight Powers, in
1966, and his fourth child, Dale Powers, in 1989.
Kenneth is survived by his son Richard Powers and
his wife Eleanor of Enosburg, VT, his son Norman
and wife Susan Powers of Middletown, CT, his
daughter Charlotte Powers Webster of Las Vegas,
NV, his son Larry and wife Jan Powers of Newport,
VT, his daughter Jane Moulton of Orleans, VT,
and his son Robert Powers of Rocky Mount, VA,
in addition to 16 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
As he requested, a simple graveside memorial service
will be held on Saturday, October 5th, 2013, at
11 a.m. before his ashes are laid to rest beside his
beloved Esther in the Charleston Center Cemetery
in Charleston, VT. Because Kenneth so dearly loved
animals, including those whose companionship
brightened his life over the many years, donations
may be made to the Pope Memorial Animal Shelter,
502 Strawberry Acres, Newport, VT 05855, in lieu
of flowers.
His family will carry their memories and love
for "Dad" and "Grandpa" close within their hearts
for years to come. They will forever remain grateful
for the talents, humor, and love that he shared
with them, and which made their lives all that more
special. May he rest in eternal peace and watch over
them from above until they reunite again one day.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday October 5, 2013
at the West Village Cemetery in West Charleston, VT with the Rev. Richard
Whitehill officiating.

Pauline M. (Simino) Wheeler
....show , 81, of Newport passed away on
September 12, 2013, in Newport, a day after her birthday. Her death comes
after a few months of failing health following hip replacement surgery.
Born in Irasburg on September 11, 1932, to Earl and Molly (Howell) Simino,
in her early years Pauline worked at Jay’s Snack Bar in Derby. Memories
created there lasted her a lifetime. One of her most endearing memories that
arose out of time at the snack bar was meeting a Newport boy named Wayne
Wheeler in 1958. They married on June 20, 1959. Together they raised three
sons and operated the Antenna Man, installing thousands of rooftop and
satellite antennas during more than half a century of business.
Pauline took great pride in her role of wife and mother, but her greatest
and most cherished role was that of grandmother — to both two-legged and
four-legged grandchildren. Pauline gave her husband, her children and their
spouses, and her grandchildren, unconditional love. She and Wayne traveled
near and far to attend their school and sporting events. They also enjoyed
numerous trips with Community Circle.
Gifted with a dry, Vermont wit and a quiet wisdom, she raised three sons,
seldom raising her voice.
Although she never had a daughter of her own, she always treated her sons’
wives or partners as if they were her own daughters. She found a daughter in
her only granddaughter, Emily, her partner in mischief and
misadventures.
Having been dealt a bad hand at a young age, Pauline had every reason to be
a bitter woman, but she wasn’t. She found the best in everything and
everybody.
While working in Massachusetts, her father met, fell in love, and married a
young woman named Molly. She was working there to send money back to her
family in Newfoundland.
After Earl and Molly married they moved back to Earl’s home town of
Irasburg, Vermont. The couple had three children: John, Elizabeth (Scott),
and Pauline, the youngest. However, the love affair between this young
Vermonter and the young woman from Newfoundland was short-lived. Molly died
on June 2, 1937, during a tuberculosis outbreak. Pauline, who was four years
old at the time, was left with no memories of her mother. Her father never
remarried. John and Elizabeth, who are no longer with us, helped their father
raise Pauline into the kind and compassionate soul we all knew and loved.
Pauline was a 1950 graduate of Orleans High School.
Pauline is survived by her husband, Wayne, and their sons: Jeffrey of
Newport Center; Scott and his wife, Penny, of Derby, and Kevin and his wife,
Tammy, of Orleans. She loved her husband and sons, but the sun rose and set
over her grandchildren: Curtis Wheeler and his wife, Gabrielle, of Presque
Isle, Maine, Nicholas Wheeler and his partner, Abby Isleborn, of Bangor,
Maine, Emily Wheeler of Essex, Vermont; Jordan and Aaron Wheeler of Orleans,
Vermont, and Jeffrey Hensley of Meriden, Connecticut. She is survived by a
former daughter-in-law, April Wheeler. In addition, she is survived by her
cat, Mittens, and by the many wild birds, especially her cardinals, that she
fed throughout the decades.
As we now have to say good-bye to our wife, mother, and grandmother, it’s
unimaginable to think that we are going to walk the remainder of our lives
without her, but without a doubt her quiet teachings are forever rooted in
us. And we have little doubt her spirit will forever gently guide us on our
journey, the same way she guided us when she was with us.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the
Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home at 37 Lake Road in Newport,
where a celebration of Pauline’s life will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday,
September 20, 2013. Internment will follow at the Lake Road Cemetery in
Newport Center.
Being a lover of all animals, domestic and wild, people are encouraged to
donate in her memory to the Pope Frontier Animal Society, 502 Strawberry
Acres Road, Newport, VT 05855.
