Elizabeth Anne Turner BA, MLS, MD JD
....show was an amazing woman. She worked hard at all she achieved. She believed that helping people was the most important task in her life. Her life ended on March 16, 2013 after slipping down the nasty slope of dementia.
Elizabeth Anne “Libby” Turner was born on July 13, 1936 to Howard and Elizabeth Cordelia (Cairnes) Turner. She grew up with her older brother by five years, Howard Jr and a younger sister by four years, Nancy. They lived and worked on a dairy farm in Black Horse, Harford County, Maryland.
Libby was active in her school, her church and 4H growing up. She played baseball on the third grade boys team, “because they needed her” she was the best hitter. In her teens she, her sister and cousins Jane and Juliette Anne had a singing group that performed at social functions in the area. Libby had a beautiful alto voice.
Beginning in first grade she would finish her work and then help the slower children with theirs.
She graduated from North Harford High School in 1954. She graduated from Maryville College in Tennessee in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She loved words and was tortured by math. She earned a Master’s of Library Science from Drexel University in Philadelphia the following year. She worked in the Agricultural Library in Peoria, Ill. The director of the program told her from the beginning that women were not smart enough to become doctors and she was certainly an example of that gender. After four years she returned to Baltimore and worked in the University Library while taking classes to prepare for applying to medical school.
At the library she looked up from her work to see “the most beautiful woman” walk across the aisle. Libby found out she also worked in the library and met her. They developed a friendship. One afternoon Libby took a huge risk for that time in society and told this woman that she was a lesbian. The woman said, not me. That night Janet called Libby and said, we need to talk. That began their relationship that lasted 34 years and only ended in Janet’s too early death from cancer. They loved each other with all their hearts. Libby was devastated by Janet’s death.
Libby earned a place in the University of Maryland’s medical school. She entered as one of six women in the class and graduated as one of two women in 1968. She completed her internship and residency at York Hospital in York, PA. Libby was the first woman to be accepted for an internship and the only woman in her internship class. This event made the paper at the time.
Janet and Libby had a private practice in Black Horse for three years before moving to Vermont.
Dr. Turner worked at Central Vermont Hospital in the Emergency Room. She eventually became the director of the ER. She was dedicated and believed that everyone who worked for her should be as invested in being a doctor as she was. Janet and Libby worked holidays so the doctor’s with families could be home with their children. Both Janet and Libby gave expert testimony in trials involving medical issues over the years. Libby passed her boards in both family practice and emergency medicine.
At the age of fifty Libby enrolled at Vermont Law School as a full time student. She worked at the Vermont State Hospital during these years at night. She loved the residents and enjoyed doing rounds. Libby graduated in 1989 with a Juris Doctorate.
She completed her clerkship in the Medicaid Fraud Protection Unit of the Attorney General’s office. She then worked for the Vermont League of Cities and Towns. She wrote booklets to help town clerks and officers understand points of their jobs. She worked to answer questions accurately and clearly.
Libby volunteered for a number of organizations over the years often she began work as a board member and ended up being the chair. She worked for the Shelter House Project as a board member, chair and on the battered women’s hot line.
Libby was on the Selectboard for the town of Worcester and was chair of the board. She also was Town Moderator for a year.
Libby was on the Medical Practice Board for the State of Vermont and was the chair of the board.
Libby was Green up coordinator for Worcester for several years as well.
Libby volunteered for Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice as a hospice volunteer for several years.
Libby was the medical expert for Mock Trials at Vermont Law School.
The people of the town of Worcester were very lucky to have Janet and Libby living in their town. They freely gave of their time and expertise to medically needy neighbors. One neighbor was smashed between two cars and had no insurance. They doctored him to health. Another needed a shot every week. Another needed to be looked in on so she could stay out of the nursing home. And so it goes on.
Janet and Libby owned rental properties in Barre. They took care of their tenants as well as collecting the rent. Better landladies could not be found.
Libby recognized that her cognitive faculties were declining. She tried to make accommodations so she could continue to be independent. She was devastated when her car keys were taken away. She thought she could no longer help people. She was angry and there was not a thing she could do to reverse her decline. No matter how hard she worked she could not achieve the goal of independence again.
People helped Libby stay in her home. The wonderful Sandy Mann took Libby shopping for food when she was still able and willing to be in public. She lived with Libby’s anger as the disease progressed at not being able to remember what she wanted to buy, how to use money, how to sign her name.
The Personal Care Assistants from Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice were wonderful. They read, cooked, sang, talked and cared for Libby so she knew she was important. She was not always easy to care for as she fought the losing battle to maintain her independence. Mark, Keri, Ashley, Crystal, Erica(2), June, Mary Francis, Dawn and many others were vital to the task of allowing Libby to stay in her home.
Bonnie Pollard and Kathy Menninger were longtime friends who stepped up to work with Libby as she declined to allow her to live at home.
Libby is survived by her brother, Howard of Arizona and his children Mary, Roseanna and James. Her sister, Nancy of Maryland her husband, Nelson Berigtold and their children Amy and Margaret. She is also survived by her family in the UK: Robert and Brenda Anthony and their adult children, David, James, Richard, Rachel and their families. She is predeceased by a nephew Andrew Turner.
She is also survived by people she considered family over the years, Selman Wright, John and Sarah Loder and their children Janet Elizabeth, Katie and Joseph. Holly Perdue and Cheri Goldstein, who coordinated her care and were her choice to make those decisions.
Libby was a woman of substance and courage. She was a role model and a pioneer for women who came after her. We all stand on her shoulders today. She will be missed terribly but we rejoice that she is no longer living in pain and confusion. Her spirit is now with the spirit of Janet. May they soar together forever. Libby and Janet’s ashes will be comingled and buried at a later time alongside their beloved cats. A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Church in Barre at 2:00pm on Friday, March 22nd with a reception to follow.
Donations may be made to: the “Janet Anthony Fund” that is used to provide medical care to animals that might otherwise not get the help they need. ORAH 36 Three Mile Bridge Road, Middlesex, VT 05602. Libby also would be honored if we each gave a book to a child or donated to your local children’s library.

John Wires
....show , 91, a beloved teacher, visionary, and an early pioneer of Vermont’s back-to-the-land movement, died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, July 1st, 2013 in his home in Montpelier at the age of 91. In an interview prior to his death, Wires said that he’d like to be remembered “as a decent person who really cared about the world, and who wanted to see people having fun playing.”
Playing, for Wires, meant experimenting with ways to live in harmony with nature. Beginning in the early 60s, when he moved to Plainfield, Vermont after years of teaching science and education in New York, Wires designed and built a small home and led a Thoreau-like life style at the base of Spruce Mountain. There, Wires mastered “treecropping,” or the practice of raising trees that bear edible nuts and fruits. He passed his collected wisdom on to many students and admirers throughout the years.
Born March 3, 1922, Wires was one of five siblings who grew up in Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts, where his father was a well-known tile contractor. As a child, John developed an early fascination with birds. While canoeing on a Maine river one day, he came upon a loon in her nest. “It was a miraculous thing,” he remembered. “It really moved me. I loved being surprised by the natural world.”
Prior to the U.S. engagement in World War II, Wires volunteered with the American Field Service in North Africa and the Middle East as an ambulance mechanic and driver. He was drafted in 1942 and, as a conscientious objector, chose to serve as a medic rather than a rifleman. He served in the 100th Division’s 397th Unit, which liberated the Maginot Line fortress of Bitche during the winter of 1943 – 1944. He spoke openly of suffering from lifelong post-traumatic stress disorder, which he believed had led him toward his Thoreau-like life in the Plainfield woods.
After the war, Wires completed a combined undergraduate degree in philosophy, history and literature at Pennsylvania’s Haverford College, where he was deeply influenced by the writings of Goethe and by Quakerism.
There, he started up a weekly “famine meal” group, which sent money saved from college meals to a relief group in Europe. He went on to study science education, earning a master’s degree at Columbia Teacher’s College in New York; he also pursued an unfinished Ph.D. in community studies.
Subsequently, Wires lived in New York as a college and high school science teacher at various institutions. In the early 1960’s, he discovered Goddard College, where he fell in with artists and philosophers who dreamed of building a more sustainable, community-based society. Returning to New York following a divorce, he taught at Fordham College, where he got to know the famous back-to-the-lander, Scott Nearing, author of The Good Life with his wife Helen.
The Nearings inspired Wires to return permanently to Vermont and to build his mountainside homestead. Subsisting on a small pension and living in a hand-hewn cabin without electricity or plumbing, Wires undertook a life of voluntary simplicity without modern comforts. He became so well versed in the literature of alternative living that he himself became something of an authority.
He learned everything he could about growing trees and harvesting food from them. He planted mulberries, acorn oaks, American chestnuts, honey locust and “everything under the sun that could be considered a food source,” he recalled in an interview. “I had this notion of starting a whole new agriculture.”
In his old age, Wires became a fixture in downtown Montpelier, where he lived in a small apartment on North Street. He became a member of the Unitarian Church, made regular appearances at the summer farmer’s market, sang in the Gospel Choir, and enjoyed a wide circle of friends of all ages.
Wires spoke often to students about the need to discover their own roads not taken. “John spent a lifetime at the fertile intersection of mind and nature,” said Bryan Pfeiffer, a friend of nearly 30 years. “A reader, writer, philosopher, and field naturalist, John never gave up trying to understand his own place in the world and how to make the world a better place. Humility, thought, exploration – they’re his legacy, his gifts to the rest of us.”
For his part, Wires said that he’d like to be remembered “for inspiring students to let go of trying to be good according to conventional dictates, and instead finding their hearts.” Another close friend, Jodi Vilardi, said “John showed us what it is like to be 90, embracing emotional growth, and creating new friendships too.”
John Wires is survived by his children, Peter Wires and Nancy Wires Cunningham and her husband Jon, and Nancy’s children, Larkin, Colby, and Caroline, all from Montpelier. His former wife, Ruth Hathaway, died in 2011. Also surviving are many other nephews and nieces, including Bill Wires, who lives in Berlin, Germany, and Caroline, who lives in Delray Beach, Florida.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 on August 4th at the Unitarian Church, 130 Main Street, Montpelier.

Jeannine G. Wood
....show (March 04, 1931 - May 16, 2013) slipped away peacefully in her own bed at home with loved ones at her side to hold her hand and kiss her good-bye, with tears in their eyes and a smile on their lips that her suffering had ended.
Our cherished Mom was born Jeannine Jeannette Gagne on March 4, 1931 in Montpelier to the late Emile and Augustine Gagne. She started her schooling in a one-room schoolhouse in Berlin Four Corners. When the family moved to Montpelier she continued at St. Michael’s Catholic School and graduated from that High School in 1949. She soon started work for the Vermont State Department of Taxes, becoming secretary to the Commissioner at a very young age.
In early 1956 Mom met the man who would become her husband while buying cashews from him at McClellan’s Department Store. Noel Wood was a suave, handsome, hard-working young man. A whirlwind courtship culminated in an engagement by Easter. Jeannine and Noel married on July 7, 1956 at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Montpelier. In short order they became the parents of Candace, George, Douglas, and twins Philip and Stephen. When Dad died on March 28, 2010 they had been married for nearly 54 years.
Mom returned to work when we were older, shortly before she and Dad watched with pride as their new house on Berlin St. was built in 1971and into which they moved their family on November 4. This new home was lived in and lovingly maintained throughout their lives, with neither one willing to ever move anywhere else. A part-time job turned into a series of full-time jobs at the Department of Labor and Industry, with ever-increasing responsibility and importance. She retired from Labor and Industry in the early 1990’s as the Worker’s Compensation Specialist and Wage and Hour Supervisor, positions in which she truly helped people.
Shortly after retirement a series of ailments and conditions started to plague her and cause a great deal of pain. Mom tolerated everything with grace, strength and a ready smile. She learned to use all kinds of helping, adaptive equipment, often teaching her teachers a better way to do something! She also had to learn to depend on others for help, most notably our Dad. Until very recently Mom rolled along on her walker, reserving the wheelchair for kitchen use so she could have her hands free to cook, clean and wash dishes. In addition to her cooking talents, she had a beautiful singing voice. In her teens and twenties she sang professionally at weddings. In her frailer, sicker years it would be a good day if you heard her singing and sometimes dancing in her wheelchair.
After Dad passed away in 2010, Mom asked George to move in with her. The other four of us soon started rotating weekends, staying with her every 4th weekend. Mom often noted how wonderful these one-on-one times with all of us were as they helped her to know us so much better, and conversely we got to know our mother better. We found that she was even sweeter than we thought, yet also spicy, sassy and even naughty at times! She was thankful for the time we devoted to her and we were thankful to be able to keep her at home as she desired.
Mom’s health continued to fail, with several hospitalizations followed by short stints at Woodridge Rehabilitation to regain strength and return home. During her last stay at Woodridge she became weaker, not stronger, and just wanted to go home. Through heroic efforts by George and many others, this wish came true. She passed away in her own bed, in her own room, and went to be with her darling Noel and her God in heaven. “MTYLTT” Mom and Dad.
Mom is survived by her 5 children and their families: Candy Bedard, her husband Brian and son Kyle of Winooski; George of Berlin/Montpelier and his daughters Natasha, Victoria and Brittany of Barre; Doug of Hudson, NH; Phil, his wife Karen, daughter Erin and stepson Patrick McInnis of Nashua, NH; Steve and his children Kaitlyn and Ben of Barre. She was predeceased by Noel, her husband of nearly 54 years, her 1st grandchild, Andrew Bedard, her parents and older siblings Merrill, Marie, Gerard, Trudy, and Madeleine.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Augustine’s Roof Replacement Fund or to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice.
Funeral Mass will be offered at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 22nd at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will be at Berlin Corners Cemetery.
