Millie Margaret Bertrand
....show , the sweetest and coolest little girl the world has ever seen, unexpectedly passed away on March 8, 2013. She was ten years old.
Millie’s ten years with us were filled with joy, laughter and tears. She was an energetic and popular girl. She loved animals, swimming, riding her bike and scooter, and listening to music. Her wicked sense of humor and joyful sarcasm brightened our days, and her infectious smile will never be forgotten. She was an absolute joy to be around.
She was born on January 23, 2003 in Randolph, Vermont. She came into the world as fast as a rocket ship, eager to experience the world. Millie was an adventurous, helpful and friendly kid who was always willing to help a friend. Her caring spirit was in evidence every day of her short life. She worked very hard at Union Elementary School in Montpelier, Vermont and later Boca Raton Elementary in Boca Raton, Florida. She excelled in writing, reading, arts & crafts, and music. Some of our favorite memories of Millie revolve around music: singing “We Are Vermont Strong” - a song she wrote with her Union School classmates - with a full orchestra at St. Augustine’s Church, and playing with the Chimeringers at Boca Raton Elementary.
Friends and family were the center of Millie’s world. She loved texting and talking with her pals, and she was always planning the next big adventure to the beach, to the zoo, or to the amusement park. She was looking forward to returning to Lotus Lake Camp in Vermont this summer. Her favorite band was One Direction, and she loved to watch teenybopper shows on t.v. She truly loved to live life – and we are certain that she is trying to organize a party in Heaven right now.
She leaves behind her parents, Margaret (Meg) Bertrand and Michael Bertrand of Boca Raton, Florida. She is also survived by her loving brothers, Riley and Beckett, who have been her constant companions throughout childhood and will miss her dearly.
She also leaves behind her grandparents: Frederic and Elinor Bertrand of Bonita Springs, Florida; Robert & Gillian Carl of Beverly Hills, Florida; and Leslie and David Gibbs of Ticonderoga, New York. Millie is also survived by her Aunt Kim Bertrand and cousin Jack of Boston, Massachusetts; Aunt and Uncle Jennifer and Jim Templeton and cousin Lucas of Milton, Vermont; and Uncle Tyler Carl of Beverly Hills, Florida.
All of us will cherish our time with Millie. Her family and friends will miss her dearly, and we know that her spirit will always be with us. We love you, sweetie.

She spent the entirety of her life in Montpelier, attending St. Michael's Catholic School and St. Augustine's Church. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, the Montpelier Emblem Club #369, and the Ladies Home Dem.
At sixteen, she took her first job at the Woolworth's five-and-dime. By twenty-five, she was a single mother of five, a waitress at The Lobster Pot, and a lab technician at the US Department of Agriculture, helping to make Vermont a brucellosis-free state. She later married Philip DeRonde, owner of DeRonde Plastics. After his passing, Madeleine became a land developer; the road bordering their property in East Montpelier still bears the DeRonde name.
Madeleine was an avid gardener and needlepoint enthusiast. She enjoyed the many pleasures of life: food, dancing, and music of all kinds. Above all, she loved spending time with her extensive family.

Mary Ferris Pearsall (Molly) Dickson
....show , 89, formerly of Salisbury, VT, died at home on April 5th, 2013 surrounded by her family. She was born on October 18, 1923, in Rochester, NY, the daughter of Chester and Roxanna (Pratt) Pearsall. Molly earned an associates degree from Ambler School of Horticulture in PA and worked as a gardener in Philadelphia. She spent weekends outdoors rock climbing, caving, hiking, & canoeing – even becoming engaged to her future husband Robert “Bob” Dickson on a ledge part way up a rock face. Bob & Molly were married September 22, 1956, and then moved to Salisbury in 1961 to raise their three girls in the country.
All her life Molly lived her commitment to walk softly on the earth with the determination few have. She minimized her consumption of resources, reused virtually everything, and wore things completely out. For many years she took primary responsibility for recycling at the Salisbury Landfill. Molly preferred walking, bicycling, or taking the bus to driving her gas-burning ‘infernal combustion engine’ (automobile). She was often spotted riding her bicycle to Shard Villa, to church, or to and from Middlebury, even in her 70’s.
In Salisbury, she was well known for her flower garden and the lovely natural flower arrangements she brought to the Congregational Church, where she was an active member since moving to Vermont in the early 1960’s. Year round Molly could be seen walking and snow shoeing her beloved trails through the fields and woods near her home. She always carried a bag to clean up any trash she might find. A life-long naturalist, Molly helped establish the E.L.F. program in the Salisbury Public School to increase school children’s awareness of and interest in the natural world.
Like her late husband Bob, Molly was an avid reader. As a young mother she was far more interested in reading a good book to her daughters than in cleaning house. She shared many of her favorite books with the residents of Shard Villa and volunteered at the Salisbury Public Library.
Molly went out of her way to help those who were needy. She was involved with the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO) and Addison County Community Action Group (ACCAG, now HOPE) for many years, volunteering in the Clothing Room and helping to establish home vegetable gardens. Molly had long been a world peace activist and was an active member of Swords to Ploughshares.
In her quiet way Molly selflessly and generously shared her gifts, set a beautiful example for all of us and enriched the entire community. We will miss you, Molly/Granny/Mom, you will live in our hearts forever.
She is survived by her three daughters: Nancy Gaudreau and husband Louis of Perth, Ontario, Holly Ferguson of Middlebury, Ann Chalmers and husband Rich of Williamstown, and eight grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bob Dickson, her sister Alice Pearsall Tilley, and brother Mason Pratt Pearsall.
A memorial service will be held at the Salisbury Congregational Church on Saturday April 20 at 1:00 pm (there will be a sing-a-long prior to the service).
Molly has donated her body to the UVM College of Medicine, continuing to help others even after death.
Gifts may be given in memory of Molly to the Salisbury Congregational Church, PO Box 61, Salisbury VT 05769, 352-9080, to HOPE (Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects), 282 Boardman St Middlebury, VT 05753, 388-3608, or to Vermont Coverts, Woodlands for Wildlife, PO Box 81, Middlebury, Vermont 05753, 802-388-3880

Margaret (Peg) Hurley Franzen
....show completed her life journey at her home surrounded by family and friends on November 9, 2013.
She was born in Boston, Mass. on September 25, 1939 the daughter of James Walter Hurley and Margaret F. Mulhern.
Peg received her Bachelor’s Degree from Emmanuel College, Boston, MA in 1961 and her Masters from Georgetown University, Washington D.C. in 1965. She completed a program of feminist liberation theology at the Women's Theological Center (Episcopal Divinity School) in Boston 1985-1986.
Peg moved from Washington, D.C. to Essex Jct. VT in 1970 and then to Montpelier in 1993.
She was a devoted spouse, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. Peggy is survived by her spouse Joyce Werntgen, ex-husband Herbert Franzen, daughter Lisa, son Matthew, son Michael and his wife Kerry, grandchildren Alex and Heidi Franzen, great-grandson Kayden, step-grandchildren Samantha Forman, and Christopher and Shawn Neste, step-sons Kurt, Neal and Eric Werntgen and their families and her brother Robert Hurley and his family. Peg was a life-long advocate and activist for the rights of people with disabilities (founding member of the Vermont Center for Independent Living), workers' rights and universal healthcare (former president of the Vermont Workers’ Center), and advocate for social, economic and political equality for the disenfranchised.
Peg was all about relationships and someone who genuinely cared about people and, when she first met you, wanted to know where you were from, what you liked to do, and what your interests were. When you responded to her questions about yourself, she listened, really listened, and asked more questions and you wondered why she was so curious. She wanted to make you feel at ease and comfortable and, by the time the conversation ended, you both knew a little more about each other. She had a gentle, loving sense of humor and twinkle in her eyes that made you want to spend more time with her and learn more about her. Before long, you would have a new friend and you might even be interested in joining her in changing the world.....one person at a time.
Peg was very proud of her Hurley/Irish heritage and Boston roots and was an avid Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics fan. She loved the outdoors and was happiest running, walking, hiking, biking or taking photos in the beautiful Vermont landscape.
Peg’s spouse Joyce wishes to express her deepest and heartfelt gratitude to the “team” of friends and family whose support made it possible for Peg to remain in the comfort of her home until she passed on. BERLIN, VT. - Vincent Illuzzi, Sr.
....show , 93, who lived on the Barre-Montpelier Road in Berlin for 54 years, died on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at the Berlin Health & Rehabilitation Center, where he had been staying for the past several weeks.
He was born in Giovinazzo, a port city on the Adriatic coast in southern Italy, on July 22, 1920. He attended school until eighth grade and then received training to be a granite sculptor.
In 1937, he immigrated to the United States, where he learned how to speak English, and eventually settled in Barre to work as a granite sculptor and carver. He sent part of his earnings to his mother back in Italy to help support the family that remained there.
On January 21, 1943, during WWII, still an Italian citizen, he volunteered to join the U. S. Army. A photograph at the Montpelier Historical Society shows him with a group of other enlistees in the front of the Washington County Court House, ready to depart for war. He was stationed in Iceland as a translator. During the war, Army officials realized he wasn’t a U. S. citizen and ordered him to become one because the U. S. was at war with Italy. He was honorably discharged January 5, 1946.
In 1952, he married Angela Piscitelli, who was also born in Giovinazzo, at St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral in New York City. She predeceased him in 1993.
As a self-employed sculptor, he was commissioned to carve monuments, which are located in parks and cemeteries across America. One commission was for a large granite sculpture to be located at P Street, between 22nd Street and 23rd Street, N.W., Washington D.C., near Dupont Circle. It was dedicated to the liberation, freedom and independence of all citizens of captive nations and stands alongside the bronze statue of Taras Shevchenko. Both are owned by the U. S. Park Service and cataloged by the Smithsonian Institution. The monument was authorized by the 86th Congress on August 31, 1960 and unveiled by former President Dwight D. Eisenhower on June 27, 1964 with Sculptor Illuzzi in attendance.
Another monument he created commemorates the role of U. S. soldiers in Viet-Nam. Located at the East Hills Kiwanis Memorial Park in Richland Township near Johnstown, PA, the granite statue of a U. S. soldier holding a Vietnamese child was dedicated in June 1974. In May 2007, vandals broke off the statue’s head and stole it. Described as “priceless” by one community leader, it is also cataloged by the Smithsonian. Illuzzi offered advice on how to repair the damage, but by 2007 he was personally too old to repair it.
After retiring as a sculptor, he returned to his trade one last time when he volunteered to carve a book of learning for the lobby of the Barre City Elementary School.
He was a member of the Barre Historical Society and an early supporter of the restoration of the Old Labor Hall in Barre, and he supported creation of the Barre Granite Museum at the Jones Brothers granite shed, where he carved many monuments, including the one in Washington. The shed needed roof and foundation work to preserve it for future generations.
He was a member of the Montpelier Gun Club, American Legion Post 10, VFW Post 790 and Moose Barre Lodge 1391 among other organizations. Although self-employed, he joined the Granite Cutters Association as an associate member to support the collective bargaining rights of granite workers.
He is survived by three sons, Vincent of Derby and his wife Eileen and their son Vincent, Frank of Brattleboro and Joseph of Berlin, who lived with and took care of him for the past ten years; and a sister, Giovanni of Bitonto, Italy, who survives him. He was predeceased by four brothers and one sister.
A funeral mass will be held Saturday at 2 p. m. at St. Monica’s Church in Barre. Burial will be at Berlin Corner Cemetery.
