,71, of Newport Vt. died peacefully at his home after a brief illness, September 2, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. Mike was the husband of Ruth Drown Richard. They would have celebrated their 36th anniversary in November. Mike was born in Nashua, NH on December 19, 1940 the son of the late Henry and Helen McInnis Richard also of Nashua, NH. Mike attended: St Patrick's Elementary school, Nashua High School (1958), St. Anselm College (1962, BA in History), and Fitchburg State College (1974, MA in Educational Administration). Immediately after his graduation from St. Anselm, he joined the Navy and served his country proudly as a Lieutenant, JG on the USS Kretchmer 329 during the Viet Nam War. Mike worked 14 years as a Junior High History Teacher in Nashua until 1980 followed by a position as teaching principal in Coventry, Vt. Mike served as a US Customs and Border Patrol Officer for 28 years prior to his retirement in 2006, and until very recently worked at Green Mountain Electric. His lifelong love of government and the political process led to a term on the Nashua Board of Alderman at the age of 29 and two years later he ran for mayor. He was an impassioned advocate for employee rights and fairness in the workplace. Early in his educational career he, was a member of the Nashua Teacher's Union, serving on the first negotiating team to successfully attain a collective bargaining agreement, a framework still used today. He continued his civic involvement in Newport City where he served on the Zoning board for 12 years and was chairman of the School board for several years. He was instrumental in the consolidation of Newport's East and Westside Elementary Schools. He loved talking about politics with everyone, and was always ready for a good debate. MSNBC will definitely notice a decline in its ratings with the loss of Mike. Mike was never afraid to take on new and difficult challenges and did so throughout his life as: Restaurant Proprietor, Triple R Remodeling, Real Estate sales, purchase and restoration of homes, and established Richmond Hill Bed and Breakfast and Lake Road Perennials. However, above all of his educational and work related accomplishments, it was his home and family in Newport that gave him the greatest sense of love, joy, and satisfaction. He will be remembered for his caring ways, his willingness to listen and offer "free" advice, his fairness and patience, and his quick wit and dry humor. He was predeceased by his mother, father, two sisters: Louise Richard Smith and Margaret Richard Maffee, two brothers-in-law: Jack Smith and Donald Maffee, and his in-laws Jersey and Gertrude Drown. He is survived by his wife Ruth, son Michael Morey, his wife Shelly, and dear granddaughter Jenna of Newport Vt., daughter Kristen Morey and Will Kulakowski of Newport and daughter Sara Richard and Cameron Cook of Burlington, Vt. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his family, his children, but he also had the love of hunting. He enjoyed the outdoors and he was waiting for the day when he shot a 10 point buck. He had fun fishing with his kids, he loved his truck and he loved his kids. He also loved all of his brothers in arms whether it be one's he served with or one's he met in passing. He loved helping his friends even if they didn't ask for help. He enjoyed being himself around all his friends. Ryan learned his passion for cooking from one of his best friends. He was always willing to give you his opinion, he was strong willed, and was willing to fight for what he wants. He enjoyed bonfires and having small friend and family get togethers. He often watched the stars at night wandering what was out there. He was greatly loved by almost everyone that knew him. He hated showing his sensitive side and he was always putting on the" I'm tuff "attitude, but everyone that knew him, knew who he really was. He wouldn't want a tear drop shed, but instead remember all the good times we have had with him, whether it be from childhood mischief to his adult life. We all will remember and love him. He is survived by his wife Melissa Leonard of Derby, VT, by his children: Ryan J. Leonard, Natasha Leonard, Katie Whittemore-Leonard, Jonathan Whittemore, and Jacob Whittemore, by his parents : Bruce and Lynda Leonard of St. Johnsbury, VT. He is also survived by his ex-wife Jennifer Birch-Leonard and her son Devon Birch both of Newport, VT.
