Durward J. Gebbie

, 89, of Glover and Mansfield, Connecticut, died on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at the Pines Rehabilitation Center in Lyndon following a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born of Scottish descent on February 13, 1923, in Greensboro, the son of John and Beatrice (Fuller) Gebbie. Mr. Gebbie graduated from Craftsbury Academy in 1942, where he excelled in athletics, especially competitive skiing. He enjoyed cross-country skiing to school. In the fall of 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and served in the Middle Eastern Theater Campaign during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Craftsbury and married Clemma Davis on June 30, 1946. They moved to Mansfield, where he was employed by the University of Connecticut as the herdsman on the dairy farm. Mr. Gebbie became an active member of the community and served as a Mansfield selectman in 1963. He also coached baseball and was the manager of a bus line, driving commercial and school buses. He enjoyed boating and fishing with his family in their cabin cruiser and traveling in their motor home. In 1970, the Gebbies moved back to Vermont where they owned and managed Lyndonville Hardware. In 1975 they expanded and opened St. Jay Hardware in St. Johnsbury. Mr. Gebbie was an active member of the Lions Club, the Veterans of Foreign War, the Masons and a Shriner. He was a 65-year member of the Free and Accepted Masons and a member of Crescent Lodge #66. After retirement the Gebbies enjoyed 20 years golfing, fishing and being with friends while wintering in their Port St. Lucie, Florida, home. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Clemma Gebbie of Glover; his seven children: Darwin Gebbie and his wife, Priscilla, of Lebanon, Connecticut, Donna Clauson and her husband, Jack, of Mansfield, John Gebbie and his wife, Denise, of Waterford, Brad Gebbie and his wife, Debbie, of Glover, Brenda Semmelrock and her husband, Harold, of Gilman, Connecticut, Carol Shepherd and her husband, Ron, of Grantham, New Hampshire, and Linda Johnson and her husband, Chris, of Palm City, Florida; his 18 grandchildren; his three great-grandchildren; his two sisters: Mavis Kowaliw of Hebron, Connecticut, and Ruth Luckey of Dingmans Ferry, Pennsylvania; his many nieces and nephews; and by many friends in the Northeast Kingdom, Port St. Lucie, and Mansfield. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother Harry Gebbie; and by his grandson Gregory Gebbie. Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. James "Jim" Joseph Raftery III

, 33, died peacefully on Friday, June 29, 2012, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after a long battle with cancer. On that day our world suffered the loss of a kind and gentle soul, a young man with compassion, courage and a fearless love of life. He was born on May 29, 1979, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and spent most of his youth in Orleans. He graduated from Lake Region Union High School in 1998 where he stood out as a cross-country skier, and attended the University of Alaska at Anchorage. He received an associate's degree in culinary arts from the Arts Institute of Fort Lauderdale in 2008. After living in the Northeast Kingdom, Anchorage, Alaska, and Boston, Massachusetts, he settled in Fort Lauderdale where he was owner of PassionFood, a private chef and catering company. He loved antiques, yoga, scuba diving, and standup paddle boarding. He will be greatly missed by his partner of seven years, Michael Lenihan of Fort Lauderdale; his parents: Joanie and Larry Austin of Orleans; his siblings: Bobby Raftery of Brattleboro, Derek Austin and his wife, Jenn, of Chesapeake, Virginia, Kathryn Raftery of Culpeper, Virginia, and Chesley Austin and her partner, James Peverill, of Canton, Massachusetts; his grandparents, Lois and Warren Austin of Orleans; his aunts: Karen Bennett and Ann Austin of Orleans; and by his baby nieces: Chessa and Riley Austin of Chesapeake. He also leaves his beloved miniature schnauzers, Chips and Lealea. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Bob and Kitty Bennett; and by his sister, Molly Raftery. A memorial service will be held at Orleans Federated Church on Saturday, July 21, at 11 a.m., with the Reverend Harvey Bartlett presiding. , 15, of Irasburg, VT passed away suddenly on July 28, 2012 in Newport, VT. He was born September 8, 1996, the beloved son of Gary and Rhonda (Fulford) Cole. Cody was a sophmore at Lake Region Union High School in Orleans, VT, where he was a straight A student. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father where he has shot many deer and turkeys. Among his hobbies he loved to play soccer with his cousins on his Uncle Bruce’s Lime team and play board games with his grandpa. He also loved to go 4 wheeling and snow mobiling and play video games. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and he enjoyed doing Boy Scout activites with his Nana and Papa Jim. He is survived by his parents Gary and Rhonda Cole of Irasburg, VT, his siblings, Chantelle, Brooke, Joshua and Cierra Cole. , 93, of Newport, VT passed away July 27, 2012 in Newport, VT. She was born in Montpelier, VT on May 31, 1919, the daughter of Harold and Elizabeth (Kelty) Chamberlin. She suffered the death of her mother in infancy and lived her early years with her paternal grandparents on Echo Lake in East Charleston, VT. She was a graduate of Orleans High School, Lyndon State College and Goddard College. She married Bruce Mosher of Newport, VT in 1942. She taught school in Glover, Troy, Barre City, Montpelier, and Marshfield, VT. During WW11 she was employed by Boeing Aircraft Co in Seattle, Washington. In 1985 she moved from Montpelier, VT to Polk City, Florida spending summers in Island Pond, VT. She moved to Newport in 1998. She is survived by her daughters: Jean (Mrs. David Gosselin) of North Montpelier, VT, Jill (Mrs. Michael Booth) of Phoenix, Arizona, and Jaye (Mrs. Michael Phillips) of Colchester, VT, 7 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and by a sister Lynda Mosher. A Graveside service will be held on Thursday August 16, 2012 at 11:00 at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport, VT with the Rev. Tim Wilcox officiating. , 87, of Newport Center, VT died on Thursday July 26, 2012 in Newport, VT. He was born on August 31, 1924 in Scranton, PA, to James H. and Hazle (Dibble) Avery. James served in the US Navy from 1943 until he was honorably discharged in 1946. He married Arleene Henn on August 31, 1945 in New York. They resided in Mt. Kisco, NY for 36 years. James worked for the NY Telephone Company and retired after 35 years of service. Upon retirement, he and Arleene moved to Marco Island, FL where he enjoyed deep-sea fishing, playing golf and bridge. In 1998, they moved to Newport Center, VT. He is survived by his wife, Arleene Avery, of Newport Center, VT, and their daughter, Barbara Buchanan and her husband, Craig of Derby, VT. He is also survived by two brothers, Austin Avery and his wife, Gloria of Naples, FL and Gordon Avery and his wife, Marie, of Naples, FL, his sister-in-law, Muriel Dreher and her husband Frank, of Tucson, AZ, and by numerous nieces and nephews and he was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth Lauricella and Joan Closius. , 82, of Lowell, VT passed away on July 26, 2012 in Morrisville, VT. She was born on December 3, 1929 in Laconia, NH a daughter of Ernest and Effie (Warner) Blanchard. On May 8, 1949 she married Donald McElroy who predeceased her in 1983. Beverly was a 4-H leader for twenty years. She held membership with the Lowell Congregational Church, the Ladies Aide, the Tri Town Ladies Group and the she was very active with the Lowell Historical Society. She loved playing bingo and gardening. She and her late husband raised rabbits and she formally was a hot lunch cook for Lowell Graded School and she formerly worked at Kelley’s Restaurant. She was active with F.O.L.K. and she was an avid yankee fan. , 84, of Newport Center, VT, went to be with the Lord on July 24, 2012. She was born on January 4, 1928, a daughter of Henry and Bertha (Paquette) Gosselin. She married Frederick Lawson in 1945 and they were blessed with over fifty years of being together . They lived for many years in North Derby, VT where they raised their family. Theresa enjoyed working in her flower garden, crocheting, and doing outside work. She worked as a nurses aid in area nursing homes for over 25 years and enjoyed taking care of people. She also worked part time at Goodrich Memorial Library. Theresa Lawson was a blessing to know and was always willing to be the first to help others in need and never complained about anything. A kind, God loving lady who had a smile that would make anyone feel good and that would brighten up a room when she walked in. She felt that she and Fred were blessed with seven children, all whom she loved dearly, and she did not take that responsibility from God lightly. They are Conrad Lawson and his wife Rita, Larry Lawson and his wife Cheryl, Sandra Snay and her husband Tom, Shirley Lawson and her companion Ed Coderre, Connie Lemay and her late husband Roger, Gail Chaffee and her husband Ron, and Cheryl Lawson, 21 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. Theresa is also survived by sisters: Annette Willis and her husband Milton, Rose Macie, and Dianna McAllister and her husband Vincent and by her sister-in-laws Pat and Lynn Gosselin. Besides the love of her life Fred who predeceased her in 1996, she is also predeceased by her brothers Gerard, Rene, and Roger Gosselin and by her brother-in-law Elwin Macie and by her sister-in-law Jackie Gosselin. We will miss her much but know, not think, we will see her again because life is not over, it is just beginning. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. On October 10, 1959 he married Sadie Cutting who survives him. Mr. Willey was employed as a heavy equipment operator for most of his career with Blow & Cote Inc, of Morrisville, VT. He retired in 2011 with Gravel Brothers in Wolcott, VT. He held membership with the American Legion in Morrisville, VT. Dale loved hunting, fishing, gardening and working on his gentleman’s farm. His grandchildren were the light of his life during his later years. He is survived by his wife Sadie Willey of Lowell, VT, by his children: Anita Gagner and her husband Mark of Eden, VT, Brian Willey of New York City, and Darcy Patch and her husband Jeremiah of Eden Mills, VT, by his grandchildren: Emily, D.H. , 41, Resident of Westfield, Vermont died on July, 15, 2012 in Williston, Vermont after living with pancreatic cancer for the past two years. Kristi was born in Stoughton, MA on November 14, 1970 and grew up in Bridgewater, MA. She was the daughter of Barbara (Egan) Henault and the late James A. Henault. Kristi was the youngest of the Henault’s six children and attended the Bridgewater schools. She graduated from Bridgewater- Raynham Regional High School in 1989 and went on to attend Lyndon State College in Vermont. She graduated in 1993 with a degree in Human Services Counseling. Kristi put her degree to work in several positions that she held over the next twenty years and ended her career in the employ of the State of Vermont in the Economic Services Division. She was well-known for her professionalism and strong work ethic. It was in Vermont that Kristi met her beloved husband, Michael Wheeler. Kristi and Michael were married in May of 2000 and together they raised four children who were the pride of Kristi’s life. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and providing them with a warm and loving home. Kristi is survived by her husband, Michael , sons Nathan, Joshua, and Michael, and daughter Rosemarie. She is also survived by her five siblings and their spouses; Kathleen Henderson and her husband Robert ,of Wareham, MA, Karen Crowley and her husband Michael of Hinesburg, VT, Steven Henault and his wife Suzanne of Middleboro, MA, James Henault and his wife Lori of Middleboro, MA, and Robert Henault and his wife Kathleen of Bridgewater, MA. Kristi also leaves her in-laws including Robert and Joan Wheeler, Anna Henderson, Flo Miller, Peter Wheeler, Robert wheeler and Janette Wheeler. Additionally, she is survived by several nieces and nephews; Tom Henderson, Dawn (Henderson) Moodie, Mark, Heather and Sam Margolis, Stephanie and Erin Henault, Corilyn and Zachery Henault, two great nephews, Travers and James Moodie and one great niece, Sadie Kohlmeyer. , 76, lifelong resident of Morgan, VT passed away on Saturday July 14, 2012, in Newport, VT. She was born on March 29, 1936 in Lake Salem, New York a daughter of Julian and Evelyn (LeClair) Wheeler. She and her husband Lyman who predeceased her on December 17, 2009 owned and operated a dairy farm where they brought up their family. She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church in West Charleston, VT and she was Town Clerk and Treasurer for the Town of Morgan for over 25 years. She was a past member of the Vt League of Cities and Towns who presented her a plaque honoring her for 25 years of membership. Lucille and Lyman loved to dance, go snowmobiling, and traveling. She was especially proud of her grandchildren and she attended all of the games and events that they all participated in over many many years, offering her love and support. She also liked to cook much to the delight of her family especially when she made her homemade English muffins. She was always willing to give a hand in the community and could always be count on her sense of humor. She was a friend, mother and Nana to all. She is survived by her children: Timothy Flynn and his wife Debbie, Laura Gobeil and her husband John, and Cyndi Dane and her husband Brian. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Stephen Flynn and his wife Pia, Levi Flynn and Cassandra, John and Rachel Adams, Bryant, Patrick and Erika Tuller, Holly Gobeil and her fiancé Tom Manzo, John Gobeil, Jr, Hope and Troy Dane, and “special son” Ric and Tammy Pare, by her great grandchildren: Aliyah Flynn, Isabella, Jacob and Daniel Flynn. Reginald entered the United States Army and served his Country from 1966-1969. Prior to his retirement, he was employed for many years by Spates Construction. He held membership with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 798 and the Disabled American Veterans. , April 15, 1928 – July 13, 2012 Pam Crandall died Friday, July 13, 2012, from congestive heart failure at age 84. She was born in Bangor, Maine, to Charles P. Crandall and Martha Halling Crandall. The family moved to Hardwick, Vermont, where Charles worked on the St. J. and L. C. railroad. Her sisters, Sally Crandall Cromer and Joan Crandall Pierce were born in Hardwick. Pam graduated from Hardwick Academy and the University of Vermont with a degree in English with some French thrown in. In 1950 her teaching career began in Hyde Park, Vermont. Then she taught in Essex Junction even before IBM! In 1956 she joined the Department of Defense Schools in Europe where she taught high school English, French, and Ancient History for 36 years in Rochefort, France; in Poitiers, France; in Wiesboden, Germany; and finally in Brussels, Belgium from which she retired in 1992. Her teaching career spanned 42 years in Vermont and Europe, during which times she made an amazing impact on her students. She returned to Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom to her beloved camp on Daniel’s Pond in Glover. Pam spent her retirement reading, listening to classical music, and attending as many museums and theater events as possible. She shared her unbounded love of the arts with all she met. On Saturday mornings you could find her listening to “Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!” on NPR and she never missed the Sunday New York Times. Predeceased by her sister, Joan Crandall Pierce, Pam’s zeal for life was with her for all of her 84 years and lives on in her sister, Sally Crandall Cromer, several nieces and nephews and some very good friends. A memorial party will be planned in the future in accordance with her wishes, where there should be no tears for a wonderful life was lived! , 85, of Newport, VT, passed away suddenly on July 5, 2012 in Newport, VT. She was born September 8, 1926 in Newport, VT a daughter of Myron and Lera (Channell) Clapper. On October 19, 1947 she married Kenneth Kiser who predeceased her. Mrs. Kiser was secretary for the M.H. Carter Paint and Paper, Company, formerly of Main Street, in Newport,VT. Her hobbies included knitting and spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed being the secretary for the Newport Elementary School and participating in many years of several activities and events of the Elks Club with her late husband Ken. She most loved being a grandmother. She is survived by her children: Michael Kiser and his wife Linda of Derby, VT, and Joan Butler and her husband Hugh of Fairbanks, Alaska. She is also survived by her grandchildren: David and Emily Kiser and Ryan Butler and by her sister-in-law Ruth Clapper of MA. She was predeceased by her brother Charles Clapper. , 80, of Glover, VT passed away July 3, 2012 in Newport, VT. She was born July 20, 1931 in Floral Park, New York a daughter of Preston and Frances (Bedell) Wheeler. Audrey enjoyed working with arts and crafts, playing bingo, embroidering, and she always enjoyed giving everyone a hug. She is survived by her nieces and nephews: Nancy Davis of Tucson, Arizona, Robert Davis of Pasadena, CA, Phyllis Braun of Holland, VT, Bill Braun of West Glover, VT, Michael Braun of Irasburg,VT, and Philip Brooks of Glover, VT and numerous nieces, nephews and their families. She is also survived by her extended families at Maple Lane and Union House Nursing Homes. She was predeceased by her parents, by her sister Marjory Brooks, an infant sister Ruthann and by an infant brother. , 90, of Newport, VT, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2012 in Newport. She was born August 23, 1921 in Newport, VT a daughter of Charles ( Ed) and Stella (Dane) Hill. She was married to Clifton Newton who predeceased her in 1993. She graduated from Newport High School in the class of 1939. Mrs. Newton was co-owner with her late husband Cliff of Hilton Metered Gas until April 1972. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star # 27 and she was past matron. She was also a member of the United Church of Newport, VT, and she ran the Eastern Star Home in Randolph, VT until 1979. She is survived by her children: Edwin Newton and his wife Nancy of Newport, VT, and Beverly Newton of Plymouth, NH and by two grandchildren: Charles and Amanda Newton. She was predeceased by a sister Norma Smith. Friends may call from 6-8 P.M. on Thursday July 5, 2012 at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 4670 Darling Hill Road, Newport. , Sr, 50, of Newport, VT passed away July 1, 2012 in Newport, VT. He was born April 13, 1962 in Hammond, Indiana. On April 1, 1999 he married Patricia Place who survives him. Dale enjoyed carpentry, working with crafts and wood burning. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and especially his grandchildren. He loved to fish and take care of his dog Bodie and cat Dylan. He is survived by his wife Patricia (Patty) Place of Newport, VT, by his children: Dale Crews, Jr and his fiance Brittney Corrow of Orleans, VT, Norman Crews of Newport Center, VT and by his step sons Kevin Crews of Newport, VT and Logan Dupuis of Derby Line, VT. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Crystal, Jonathan, and Aron Crews.
