FRANKLIN - On Friday morning, the Feast of the Exultation of the Holy Cross, Nancy Lee Bishop
....show , 70, of Franklin, was relieved of her suffering through the power of our Lord Jesus Christ. After a fourteen-month battle with pancreatic cancer, her cross was lifted, and she went Home to the Lord. On January 22, 1942, Nancy was born to Cecile (Dubois) and Harold Greenwood. Affectionately known as “Ringer” to her closest family and friends, Nancy grew up, and attended schools, in Sheldon Creek. After her 1960 graduation from Bellows Free Academy, St. Albans, Nancy embarked upon a variety of careers: she worked at Fonda Container for several years as a manufacturer, then as a cook at Sheldon Elementary School, a Hot Lunch Agent at Missisiquoi Valley Union High School, and finally, the Kitchen Supervisor at the Franklin Homestead and the Franklin Carriage House. Nancy was always known for her compassion, her caring, and her culinary skills. She touched many lives during her short time with us, but her selfless spirit will dwell within those forever. Nancy loved her family dearly; she devoted her time to raising her daughters, Carla and Kelley, and then proudly watched them grow with their own families. She loved animals of all kinds (except birds), but especially horses, an interest she shared with her granddaughter, Megan. She was an avid Yankees fan, much to the chagrin of her beloved grandson, Ryan, and her dear cousins and friends, Charlene and Raymond Deso. Everyone knows Nancy had the “gift of gab”, and she enjoyed sitting and talking to people of all ages. Her conversations with her grandson, Connor will be cherished. Nancy also enjoyed being a member of the “Committee of Cousins”, discussing and planning the annual Greenwood Family Reunion. When Nancy met her future husband, Ronald, in 1991, Ronald knew it would be difficult to “catch this tiger by the tail”, but he persevered, and they shared a love that lasted almost 21 years. Cooking, while perhaps not a passion, was indeed a vocation, which Nancy shared with others, whether it was cooking for the residents at the Franklin Carriage House, helping at a chicken pie dinner for her church, Our Lady of Lourdes, or just grilling a ‘rare’ steak for her granddaughter, Jilly. Regardless of the occasion, anyone who shared in her talents can attest to her skills. Nancy leaves behind her husband, Ronald Louis Bishop, Sr., of Franklin, her daughter, Carla LaFar, and her husband, Robert LaFar, Jr. of Alburg, and her children, Megan Cecile and Connor, both of Fairfax; her daughter, Kelley Alderman, and her husband, Scott, and their children, Ryan and Jillian Kivrin, all of Richford; her dear sister and friend, Deborah Fletcher, and her husband, William “Bill” Fletcher, of Vero Beach, Florida; and her baby brother, Rocky Greenwood, of Sheldon. Nancy also leaves behind Ron’s four boys: Ronald Jr. “Ronnie”, of Pennsylvania, Raymond, of Pearl City, Hawaii, and his partner, Ryan Sales, David of Goshen, and his wife, Jan, and Brian of Swanton, and his wife, Deborah. Nancy enjoyed her many grandchildren: Shawn Bishop, Beth Stover, Shannen, Laura, Danielle, and Tamara Bishop, Heather and Keesy Jaring, and Ethan Bishop, and her new great-grandchildren: Isaac and London Stover, Ahnar Bishop, Ayda Bernhard, and Corey Jaring. Nancy also leaves behind her beloved and faithful canine companion, Kobe. Finally, Nancy leaves behind numerous friends and family members, people for whom her family is ever grateful. Nancy was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Edmund Brier, her parents, Harold and Cecile Greenwood, and her beautiful grandson, Jack. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 11:00 AM at All Saints Catholic Church, 152 Main Street, Richford with Rev. Karl Hahr celebrating the Mass of Christian burial. Interment will follow in the Sheldon Village Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Monday from 4-7 PM at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls. Burlington - Emily Lyman
....show - August 21, 1997 – December 13, 2012 Emily was with us for 15 wonderful years. She always showed strength, courage, and tenacity. She never held back and always tried to do the best in everything. Emily never failed to surprise us with her insight and intelligence; she was adept at expressing herself and her surroundings, in an honest, and at times extremely funny way that left us all laughing out loud. She was wise beyond her years, yet never self serving, and never self-pitying. Emily was a triumph. How to Make a Book Come to Life You have to believe that the characters will leap out of the pages twisting and forming themselves into real human beings and you have to know that they’ll dance out of the words like light dancing on glass windows and you have to see the people standing before you the people that you thought could only exist in writing. Emily Lyman, 2008 A celebration of Emily’s life will be held on Thursday, December 20th at 3:30 pm at St. Joseph’s Co-Cathedral, 85 Elmwood Ave., Burlington. There will be no visiting hours. MONTGOMERY - John E. Deuso
....show , 84, of Montgomery Center passed away at Fletcher Allen Healthcare on Sunday, December 30, 2012. Born December 13, 1928 in his parents’ home in Richford, John was the son of the late Harold and Olive (Donna) Deuso. John was a true Vermonter, a lifelong resident of this area and a well-known and respected part of the community. With his wife Pauline (“Polly”) he owned and ran Deuso’s Grocery in East Berkshire for 21 years, until their retirement in 1993. In 1947 John married Gladys (Ryea) and over the next 20 years raised their three children together. Gladys passed away in 1967 and John worked at the paper mill in Sheldon and on the weekends at Puffer’s IGA in Montgomery Center. His work ethic was a testament to his heritage, as he continued to work hard to support his children. He was eventually forced to leave his job at the mill due to allergies but went to work full time at Puffers. In 1968 John married Pauline (Stanhope) Cluba who along with John’s three children, George, Diane and Betty, joined families with Polly and her sons, John and Frank. They made their home in Montgomery. In 1972 John took a “leap of faith” and bought his own store, Deuso’s Grocery in East Berkshire. The store was a family affair, where along with his wife Polly, his sister Jenny, his niece Maryann and daughter Betty, they spent the next 21 years running the store. John and Polly were very well known in the community; it’s safe to say that there are very few people in Franklin County that they didn’t know or whose lives were not touched by him in some way. He would say that in their business in a small town you would have to love people to be successful; and he did. He always extended a hand to help people out. An old hand-painted sign on the side of the store featured a picture of John smiling, proclaiming “The Friendliest Place Around”. Deuso’s Grocery remained a social gathering site long after the store was passed on to John’s nephew Dick (“Dick & Pam’s) where people shared stories and relaxed in the front corner of the store in lawn chairs around the always-fresh coffee pot. The local children were also special to John. He always opened the store early in the winter so the children waiting for the bus would have a place to stay warm. Upon their retirement in 1993, John and Polly moved to their new home in Berkshire and enjoyed life, traveling, visiting with friends and family and just relaxing. In later years when Polly was in failing health, John tirelessly and lovingly cared for her with the kindness and good humor that was so typical of him. John was the kind of man who would not turn his back on someone in need. He was loved by many because of his kind and generous nature, his love for his family and the way he always shared the love. There are so many people who John could count as his friends, and every one of us are proud to have known him. Thank you Johnny! John is survived by his large and loving family: son Robert Deuso and partner Brenda Charbono of Casselberry, Fl; two daughters, Diane Pritchard and husband Owen of Lake City, Fl; and Betty Marcy and husband Russell of Richford, Vt; his son John Cluba and wife Lynda of Montgomery, Vt; son Frank Cluba of Derby, Vt; a brother, Steve Deuso and wife Darlene of Eden, Vt; grandchildren Brian Deuso and wife Sylvie, Keith Deuso and wife Terri, and Angela Raner; Tanya Marcy; Ethan Marcy and wife Alicia; Morgan Bohm and husband Thim; Elliot Cluba and wife Shekhinah and Frank’s children Patrick and Savanna; a niece Maryann Donna; two nephews Jesse Soule and wife Karen and Dick Donna and his wife Pam. He is also survived by many great grandchildren of whom he loved with all his heart. John is also survived by his special friend and companion, Gloria Longe of Montgomery Center, with whom he spent the last five years. Gloria’s kindness, caring and companionship truly made John’s last few years happy ones. Besides his mother Olive and father Harold and his first wife Gladys, John is predeceased by his sister, Jenny Soule; his brother Roger Deuso; and his wife Pauline “Polly” Deuso. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 4, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls with Pastor Patrick Hoadley officiating. Interment will be next spring in the Montgomery Center Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at the Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls on Thursday from 4-7 PM.
