, 32, of North Troy, VT passed away suddenly at his home on March 2, 2012. He was born September 21, 1979 in Newport, VT a son of Francis and Debbie (Keement) Chaput. Shawn was a great child who grew up into a great man and a very loving and caring person. He had a love for sports and a great love for his dogs Lincoln and Max. Shawn graduated from North Country Union High School in 1998 where he played football the year they won the State Championship. He was also chosen for the Shriner Bowl. While in High School he worked at Grand Union with Dave Bouffard. When Dave purchased Derby Village Store, Shawn went to work for him there and worked many years for him. Shawn leaves behind his parents: Francis and Debbie Chaput, his brother Matthew of Derby,Vt and his niece Aleah, his sister Amanda of North Troy, VT, his nephews: Dylan, Cody, Jordyn, and niece Larkyn, his brother Thomas of Fla, his sister Christina and her partner Alan Coburn of Newport, VT, his nephews: Jayden, Tanner, and his niece Amaya. He also leaves behind his grandmothers Sadie Watters and Ivah Chaput, many Aunts, Uncles, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his grandfathers Felix Chaput, Sr, and John Keement, Sr. Shawn was truly one of a kind and will be dearly missed. , 67, of Glover, VT passed away suddenly on March 4, 2012 in Newport, VT. She was born January 23, 1945 in Sunbury, PA beloved daughter of Kathryn Baker. On December 26, 1962 she married Michael Ladd who survives her. Mrs. Ladd was a stay at home Mom until her children were all in school and then she became secretary for the Glover School for 25 years. She was the Glover Church trustee for many years and a member of the Glover Church Women's Union. She was a current member of the American Legion Post 76 Auxiliary. She loved her antiques, decorating her home and she enjoyed her collection of Elvis' CD's and tapes. She also enjoyed going to her grandchildren's sports events, dance recitals, and all school activities. She also loved family gatherings at the Ladd camp on Lake Salem and motorcycle riding with Mike. Bonnie is survived by her husband Michael Ladd of Glover, VT, by her children: Michael Ladd, Jr and his wife Beth of St. Albans, VT, Pamela Raymond and her husband Wayne of Stowe, VT, and Matthew Ladd and his wife Sheilah of Glover, VT, by her grandchildren: Samuel, Kathryn, Isaiah, Ashley, Owen, Abigail, Jericho, and Cecilia. She is also survived by her brother-in-laws and their spouses: Dave and Maria Ladd, Jon and Brenda Ladd, William and Lynda Ladd and by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister-in-law Jeanne Ladd and by her mother-in-law Shirley Rochefort. Milton Dale Hammond

, 87, of Newport Center, VT, passed away on March 5, 2012. He was born on July 2, 1924 in Newport Center, VT a son of Earl and Marion (Colburn) Hammond. He farmed on his family farm for 33 years until 1957 when he married Phyllis Joy Sleeper from Scarsdale, NY. However, before that date he had been gradually becoming an independent entrepreneur. In 1947 he bought one of the first balers and then traded it for a second and used it until 1952 or 1953 then sold it to Earl Hammond, his dad. In 1956 he bought a self-loading dump truck with which to draw gravel and in the spring of 1957 he bought a ton and half Chevy platform truck to haul milk. In 1957 he started to build a garage and in March of 1958 he bought a new John Deere 420 Bulldozer for $3500. In 1961 Milton leased MacLain sawmill in Derby for one year with the option to buy. In 1962 he bought the sawmill and operated it. After four years, Canadian Lumber began to enter this country at too low a price. He sold it. In 1965-1967 he worked at the Veneer mill as a forklift operator. In 1967-April of 1968 he worked for Herb March on the waterfront. In 1968-April 1970 he worked for C. And O. Oil driving a fuel truck and in 1970 he started to work for Caulkins Cement Company driving a cement truck. In 1972 Milton logged on his own land during the winter and in the summer of 1973 he worked in Gordon Sleeper's tree nursery. In 1974 he logged on Derby Land in the winter and in March 1974 he worked as a sawyer for Pelletier Lumber in Hardwick, VT. In May of 1976 Milton became a sawyer in Charles Drown Mill, Coventry and left Pelletier so as not to have to drive so far each day. In 1983 he bought a shingle mill and in 1984 La Branche bought the Drown sawmill and Mr. Hammond continued as a sawyer there. In June of 1986 he retired from the mill but continued to go back to sharpen saw blades and chipper knives until he was over 80 years old. At the time of his retirement Milton and his wife, who was now an established artist, began to travel together in earnest. Milton joined his wife in Iceland for her first painting exhibition in 1990. They drove to Alaska 4 times, Newfoundland 3 times, and everywhere inbetween. He drove his wife to her exhibitions in Texas, Alberta, Canada, North Dakota, and was active at her many shows. However, the things he most loved were baling hay and making maple syrup every spring for over 40 years on the Lake Road and his friends. He is survived by his wife Phyllis Joy Hammond of Newport Center, VT, by his brothers David A. Hammond of Cleveland, Ohio and Eric Hammond and his wife Barbara of Orleans, and by several nieces and nephews, He was predeceased by a sister Priscilla Plante. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Friday March 9, 2012 at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 37 Lake Rd. Newport, VT with the Rev. James MacKellar officiating. , 63, of Jay, VT died suddenly at his home on March 5, 2012. He was born on November 8, 1947 in Vernon, Vermont a son of Winthrop and Madeline (Smead) James. Doug graduated from Brattleboro High School in 1965 and soon joined the Army and served until 1969. He later joined the Vermont State Police from which he retired as a sergeant after almost 30 years of service. During that time he was a member of the VSP Bomb Squad. Doug was also actively involved in the area and was a retired Jay Peak Ski Patrol Volunteer, he was a founding member and current chief of the Jay Volunteer Fire Department and a mentor to all his firefighters. He also enjoyed working on firework displays. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed his hunting trips and going to deer camp with Kurtis and Bruce and 4 wheeling with RJ and Lee. Doug and Peggy liked to go on their annual trips to Las Vegas and to Florida to see his Dad at Christmas time. They also enjoyed their Thanksgiving dinner with camp members and their families. Doug is survived by his life partner, Peggy Loux of Jay, VT, his father Winthrop James of Fort Myers, Fla, his brother Dennis and his partner Michael Pereira of Los Angeles, California and by his sister Sandra of Seattle, Washington. , 90, of Newport Center, VT passed away on March 11, 2012 in Newport, VT. He was born January 27, 1922 in Hackensack, New Jersey, the son of H. Albert and Dorothy (Christiansen) Kruegel. On July 17, 1948 he married Dorothea Rathjen who predeceased him. He was employed by Western Electric and then AT&T as a mechanical switchboard technician. Mr. Kruegel retired in Vermont where he made many friends. He was a proud veteran of WW11 and a member of the Tin Can Sailor's Association. He also loved to play and watch baseball and he was an excellent swimmer. He is survived by his children: Kenneth Kruegel and his wife Patricia of Spring Lake Heights, NJ, John Kruegel of Stone Mount, GA, Ellen Justin and her husband Edward of Elizabeth City, NJ, Joanne Burns and her husband Bill of Little Egg Harbor, NJ, and William Kruegel and his wife Chris of Union Beach, NJ. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, by his son-in-law Robert Schaaf of Newport Center, VT, by his sister Joan Kramer of Barnegat, NJ, by his brother-in-law Richard Parry of Penn, by his sister-in-law Doris Kruegel of Fla. He was predeceased by his daughter Geralyn Schaaf on November 6, 2011. , 60, of Rutland died unexpectedly Sunday morning March 11, 2012 at her residence. She was born on Oct 27, 1951 in Providence, RI the daughter of Wesley and Hazel (Rivard) Patnode. Mrs. Cota graduated from the Scituate (RI) High School in 1969 and attended the Roger Williams School of Nursing. She married Marvin Cota on July 27, 1974. Mrs. Cota had been employed as a benefits coordinator for the State of Vermont Division of Vocational Rehabilitation in Rutland for 12 years retiring in 2004 due to her failing health. Prior to that she worked for six years as a Peer Advocate Counselor for the Vermont Center for Independent Living. She enjoyed her yard in the summer, decorating her home and especially her puppy dogs, Lexie and Bradley. Mrs. Cota enjoyed helping people and was a fearless advocate for the disabled. Survivors include her husband Marvin Cota of Rutland, a sister Elaine Furtado and a half sister Dorothy Finnerty both of Hope, RI, several nieces and nephews. , 96, formerly of Westfield, VT passed away in Newport, VT on March 13,2012 after a long illness. She was born on August 29, 1915 a daughter of William and Ellen (Mossa) Gendreau. On June 15, 1931 she married George who predeceased her on July 11, 1971. She worked for several years as an assistant dietician at the Gaylord Rehab Hospital in Conn. Lida was a very devoted Catholic and became a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Troy when she moved back to Westfield in 1978. She loved gardening and baking, much to the delight of her family. She also loved the family gatherings and just having them stop by to see her for a visit. She is survived by her daughter, Ann Racicot, and her husband, Andre, her son, Edward, and his wife, Gertrude, 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren, and by her sister-in-law, Rosa Gendreau. She was predeceased by her daughter, Ellen, and her husband, John Brault; by her brother, Omer Gendreau, and sisters, Angelina and Marie Anne Gendreau. , 63, of Derby, VT beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and Uncle passed away suddenly on March 14, 2012 at his home. He was born December 9, 1948 in Lowell, VT a son of Henry and Christine (Bullis) Sheltra. On February 20, 1999 he married Rosemary Batchelder who survives him. Dennis graduated from Newport Center High School in the class of 1966 and he was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Over the years he was a parts pro at several local businesses. He recently retired on January 27, 2012 as the commercial parts manager at Advance Auto after 6 years. He most recently worked part time at South Bay Auto. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 798 of Newport, American Legion Post 21 of Newport, and he was president of the Derby Mobile Home Park Association and constable for the Town of Derby. He enjoyed spending Friday nights at jam sessions and his Sunday's watching NASCAR with his wife Rosemary and cheering on Tony Stewart and Rusty Wallace. He spent a lot of his time with his grandchildren just hanging out at home with them or going to their sporting events. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and going to the shooting range. , DECEMBER 10, 1917 - MARCH 15, 2012, Waneta Mary Wagner McRae, 94, of Newport, passed away March 15, 2012 at Bel-Aire Residence in Newport. She was born in Island Pond, VT, on December 10, 1917, to Charles and Vivian Wagner. On December 29, 1945 she married Donald McRae who predeceased her on February 12, 2011. Mr. and Mrs. McRae owned their own dairy farm in Island Pond for 50 years. Before farming entered her life, Waneta was a public school teacher in the towns of West Burke, Concord, Walden and Waterford. When her children went to college, to help support their education Waneta returned to teaching while at the same time carrying on the many chores of a farmer. To improve her ability to help her children and to also become a stronger teacher, Waneta, at the age of 47, returned to Lyndon State College to attain her Bachelor's degree in education. The latter part of her teaching career included teaching in the elementary schools of West Charleston, Canaan, Derby Line and the Derby Junior High School. Waneta remembered her students with stories of their successes and her times spent with them. She loved her family very much and followed all the activities of her children and grandchildren with great interest. She is survived by her three children: Martin McRae and his wife Barbara of Morgan, Bruce McRae and his wife Gisele of Milton, and Vivian Spates and her husband Douglas of Derby as well as her sister-in-law Raelene Wright and her husband Dale of South Ryegate. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Lia Greenwood and her husband Chad, Jeff McRae and his wife Erin McKenny, Andrea Carbine and her husband Andrew, Elia Marquis and her husband Corey, Alicia Messier and her husband Rodney, Kate McRae and Kyle McRae and by her great grandchildren: Evan, Delia, and Erik Greenwood, McKenna, Cecelia, and Griffin Marquis, Finnegan and Charles McRae, and Poppy Messier. She is also survived by a special niece Bonnie Fontaine and her husband Paul of St. Johnsbury as well as other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son Michael McRae and step-sisters, Evelyn Bishop and Madeline Pratt. She was born January 13,1937 in Barton, VT a daughter of Francis and Myrtie (Patrick) Labounty. On May 30, 1953 she married Ronald (Frog) Sheltra who predeceased her and on February 20, 1970 she married Earl Mason, Sr who also predeceased her. Bev was a very kind hearted person who loved to give to others, she also enjoyed writing cards, going to bingo and yard sales, and spending time with her grandchildren and friends. She is survived by her six children : Peggy Poulin and her husband Donald of Derby, VT, Ronald Sheltra, Joyce Hillis and her companion Danny Hutchins all of Brattleboro, VT, Bradley Sheltra and his wife Penny of Okeechobee, Fla , Randy Sheltra of Derby, VT, John Mason and his companion Patty of Derby, VT. , 70, of Newport passed away on March 16, 2012 in Newport. He was born November 25, 1941 in Newport, VT a son of Lewis and Bertha "Sally" Pepin. Ron was owner of a Tool MFG company. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, boating, playing and listening to music, playing cribbage, nature in general and spending time with his cat George. Ron was secretary for the Newport Alumni Association as well as a substitue teacher for North Country Union High School for several years. He is survived by his beloved companion Diana Beaton of Newport, VT, by his children: Derick Pepin and his wife Kathleen of Maine, Darci LaCroix and her husband Thomas of Milton, VT, Darin Pepin and his wife Kristen of Lake Tahoe,CA and Robin and Tammy Beaton of Irasburg. He is also survived by his grandchildren: McKenzie and Rylee Pepin, Skyler, Spencer, and Josh LaCroix and Autumn and Shaylyn Beaton. Pauline "Polly" Caputo

, 86, of Newport, VT, passed away on March 19, 2012 in Derby Line, VT. She was born on February 23, 1926 in Newport,VT, the daughter of Arthur and Mildred (Gray) Palin. She graduated from Derby Academy in 1945. She then attended the University of Vermont for two years before leaving school in 1947 to marry Larry Partridge, who predeceased her in August 1954. Polly spent several years caring for her four children with the support of her family. Then in April 1958, she married Bill Caputo who predeceased her in 1997. Polly was a full time mom until her oldest child went off to college. Because of Polly's strong belief in the value of education, she went back to college for three years as an adult learner, earning her Bachelor's degree from Johnson State College the same week her daughter graduated from Castleton State College. Polly taught school at Coventry Village School for one year before becoming the secretary for the North Country Union High School Guidance Office where she served for many years. She left the working world to selflessly care for her parents and then her husband. She held membership with the American Legion Auxillary, the United Church of Newport, where she enjoyed singing in the choir and then, later in life, at Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church of Derby, VT. Polly also served for many years on the Newport City School Board. She was very supportive of her late husband Bill's involvement with the Elks Club, traveling to state and national conventions, as well as, his activities as an alderman and the mayor of Newport City. Polly used her training as a celloist to accompany a number of musicals at North Country Union High School. She loved summers at the family camp at Lake Seymour. Polly spent endless hours helping her children, their friends, and her nieces and nephews to enjoy the outdoors on the lake, swimming, skiing and fishing. Winters were also full of snowball fights and trips to the nearest sledding hill. Polly enjoyed keeping up with the activities of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was also known to be pretty handy with a hammer, enjoyed gardening and listening to music, especially Broadway musicals. Polly is survived by her children: Judi Waterman and her husband Don of Wells River, VT, Dr. John Partridge and his wife Louise of E. Lansing, MI, Bob Partridge and his wife Deb of Derby, VT, Mike Partridge and his wife Patty of Birchwood, WI, and stepson Bill Caputo of Burlington, VT and former daughter-in-law Candy Caputo of Gainesville, FL. Wilfred graduated from Orleans High School and was a veteran of the Vietnam war. He worked as a contractor for many years and had his own demolition business. Wally was extremely knowledgeable in the building and demolition trades and he was the man that others went to for an answer to any problem or situation. He loved hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. He was in the process of remodeling his grandparents (on his mothers side) home. He is survived by his children: Patience Francis and her husband Chad of Burlington, Vermont, Desmond Young of California, and Galen Young of Quebec. Betty graduated from her beloved Middlebury High School in 1943 and then entered Nurses Training at Rutland Hospital, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1947. On October 17, 1948 she married Robert C. Bishop in Brandon, VT. She worked at the Mary Fletcher and Springfield Hospitals and later at Bel-Aire Nursing Home in Newport, VT. Betty was always a consummate professional and enjoyed the trust and admiration of her colleagues. She was active in the First Congregational Church of Springfield, the Teachers Retirement Association in Newport, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, and was a regular attendee at Middlebury High School Alumni functions. Betty was known for her humor, intelligence, and devotion to friends and family. She enjoyed reading, classic movies, and swing jazz. She was extremely devoted to her husband Bob, who predeceased her on February 8, 1994. Her parents, brother Harry Jr., and a sister Jessie also predeceased her. She is survived by her children, Carole O'Connell of Chicago, IL, Mary Bishop of Newport, VT, Robert Bishop and his wife Leslie of North Troy, VT; their children Tara Parenteau of Newton Centre, MA; and Travis Parenteau of Newport, VT and great grandson Trent. , 90, of Derby, beloved wife of Frank Taylor passed away in Newport on Thursday March 22, 2012. She was born on March 18, 1922 in Hartford, CT, a daughter of Harold and Hazel (Miller) Trumble. She was a graduate of the Hartford School of Nursing in 1943 and served in the US Army as a Lieutenant Nurse and served in Europe during WWII. She went on to be a school nurse in Norwalk, CT and retired after 35 years. She was a member of the Alfred Pepin Post VFW. She and her husband Frank moved to Derby in 1995 from Connecticut. Alberta enjoyed cooking and loved to work in her flower garden. Over the years she has been an avid animal lover and enjoyed the companionship of her many different dogs. Besides her husband Francis she is also survived by her daughter Pamela LaMonaca and her husband Gilbert of PA, and their children Michael and Danielle of PA, and her stepson John Taylor and his wife Darcy of CT, and their children Julie, Jane and Erin, and by several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her bothers Jay and Bill. Funeral services will be held at a later date in Connecticut. of West Charleston, Vermont passed away Sunday, March 25, 2012 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center after a long illness. He was born February 9, 1941 in Moorhead, Minnesota, the son of Emery and Marion (Jacobson) Gullard. On March 6, 1976 he married Linda Beaupre who survives him. He graduated from Lake Park Minnesota High School in 1959. Soon after high school he joined the United States Army and was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division where he mastered the art of flying various models of planes. Duane worked in farming and construction most of his life. In the early 1960's he painted bridges in Alaska and later he returned to Minnesota where he farmed and built homes. In the early 80's he and his family moved to Brewster, Massachusetts where he owned a large construction business, and was partner and developer of Brewster Green time-share Resort. When he retired he and his wife Linda moved to Vermont where he farmed and became well known as a breeder of quality Labradors. He will always be remembered for his love and devotion to his family. Duane enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and he also enjoyed hunting and fishing in Alaska and Minnesota in his earlier years. He loved to play cards and especially enjoyed traveling with friends and family. Duane was always willing to lend a helping hand to his friends and neighbors. He is survived by his wife Linda Gullard of West Charleston, VT, and by his children: Donna Hershey and her husband Jeff of Athol, Idaho, Duane Gullard of Pauyallup, WA, Cindy Messier and her husband Dale of Spirit Lake, Idaho and Brandon Wirth and his wife Jamie of Mahnomenn, MN. of Westfield, VT died March 26.2012 in Newport, VT. He was born in St. Valerien, QC April 25, 1926 to Hormidas & Blanche (Champigny) Couture. He came to Westfield, VT in April 1947 to work on a farm. In Westfield he met the love of his life, Theresa Pion. They were married on August 23, 1948. They then moved back to Ste. Cecile-de-Milton, QC to manage the family farm. Two years later with two young children theyreturned to Westfield to purchase Theresa's parents family farm on Buck Hill where they stayed until 1963. During those years they managed to build up a very good dairy. They were one of the first in area to use artificial insemination in the 50's, one of the first farms to install a bulk milk tank and echanical barn cleaner. They were also some of the first to install plastic tubing in their sugarbush in the 50's. In 1963 they moved down to the Westfield-village-farm which is now owned by their son Jacques and his wife Pauline, known as Couture's Maple Shop/B&B. From that time on he transitioned into establishing an excavating business which he ran with his sons until he retired and sold the business to his son Andre, now known as Couture's Sand and Gravel. Jean Paul's interests were the outdoors, nature and animals - feeding wild birds, watching for wildlife, gardening, mowing his lawn, plowing driveways. He took pride in keeping his home and properties in good order, always doing maintenance and home improvements. He loved music, especially from his French Canadian heritage. He was known for playing the spoons. Most of all he enjoyed his family and his church. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Troy where after retiring he was an altar server for daily Masses and funerals. He was one of the original members of the Holy Name Society in the 50's and 60's, a charter member of the Troy Council 7943 Knights of Columbus and a Fourth Degree member of Gibbons Council. In 1969 he and his wife joined the Cursillo & Ultreya Movement. Along with his wife Theresa, he was an Associate Member to the Daughters of the Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He remained active with these until his health prevented it. He is survived by his wife Theresa and his children: Sister Monique, FCSCJ, of Littleton, NH, Jacques (Pauline) of Westfield, Jean (Kathy) of Troy, Michel (Terry) of Presque Isle, ME, Andre (Raelene) of Coventry, Suzanne Kennison of Westfield, Denise (Bob) Currier of Newport, Louise (Brian) Bonvechio of Newport, Ann (Greg) Starr of Beaconsfield, QC. He is survived by 27 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren. For many years Frances and her husband owned an operated Will-o-wood Camp grounds in Brownington, VT, where she enjoyed socializing, meeting and greeting many people. Mrs. LaBerge held membership with the Orleans Country Club where she enjoyed playing golf in the Ladies League. She was also a member of St. Theresa's Parish in Orleans, VT. She enjoyed camping, knitting, cards, and majong. She wintered in Florida where she was a very active person and she loved family parties and the outdoors. , 49, of Rush, New York passed away suddenly on March 29, 2012 at his home. He was born December 9, 1962 in Newport, Vermont, the beloved son of Edwin and Joan (Petch) Camp. He graduated from North Country Union High School in 1980 where he was an active member on the track and field team. During high school he worked at the former Natole Motors. Mike traveled to California on two occasions with Kit Kinney where he worked at a dealership in Sacramento. In 1984 he graduated with honors from the University of Vermont with a Batchelor's degree. After graduating from UVM he became a Quality Control Engineer at Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York. In 2009 he established Petcetera Home Petcare where he offered in home pet care, dog walking, and puppy care. Mike cared for four dogs during his lifetime and they were his constant companions. He is survived by his parents Edwin and Joan Camp of Newport, VT, by his niece Maghen Cote and her husband Matthew of Derby, VT, by his nephew Aaron Camp of Derby Line, VT, and by his great nephew Hayden Cote and by his great niece Rayne Cote. He is also survived by his dear dog Blue. He was predeceased by his brother Christopher Camp on March 6, 2009. Pauline "Polly" Caputo

, 86, of Newport, died on March 19, 2012, in Derby Line. She was born on February 23, 1926, in Newport, the daughter of Arthur and Mildred (Gray) Palin. She graduated from Derby Academy in 1945. She then attended the University of Vermont for two years before leaving school in 1947 to marry Larry Partridge, who predeceased her in August of 1954. She spent several years caring for her four children with the support of her family. Then in April of 1958, she married Bill Caputo who predeceased her in 1997. She was a full-time mom until her oldest child went off to college. Because of her strong belief in the value of education, she went back to college for three years as an adult learner, earning her bachelor's degree from Johnson State College the same week her daughter graduated from Castleton State College. She taught school at Coventry Village School for one year before becoming the secretary for the North Country Union High School guidance office where she served for many years. She left the working world to selflessly care for her parents and then her husband. She held memberships with the American Legion Auxiliary, the United Church of Newport, where she enjoyed singing in the choir and then, later in life, at the Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church of Derby. She also served for many years on the Newport City School Board. She was very supportive of her late husband Bill's involvement with the Elks Club, traveling to state and national conventions, as well as his activities as an alderman and the mayor of Newport City. She used her training as a cellist to accompany a number of musicals at North Country Union High School. She loved summers at the family camp at Lake Seymour. She spent endless hours helping her children, their friends, and her nieces and nephews to enjoy the outdoors on the lake, swimming, skiing and fishing. Winters were also full of snowball fights and trips to the nearest sledding hill. She enjoyed keeping up with the activities of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also known to be pretty handy with a hammer, enjoyed gardening and listening to music, especially Broadway musicals. , 90, of Derby, died on Thursday, March 22, 2012, in Newport. She was born on March 18, 1922, in Hartford, Connecticut, a daughter of Harold and Hazel (Miller) Trumble. She was a graduate of the Hartford School of Nursing in 1943 and served in the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Nurse and served in Europe during World War II. She went on to be a school nurse in Norwalk, Connecticut, and retired after 35 years. She was a member of the Alfred Pepin Post Veterans of Foreign Wars. She and her husband moved to Derby in 1995 from Connecticut. Mrs. Taylor enjoyed cooking and loved to work in her flower garden. Over the years she had been an avid animal lover and enjoyed the companionship of her many different dogs. She is survived by her husband Francis; by her daughter Pamela LaMonaca and her husband, Gilbert, of Pennsylvania, and their children: Michael and Danielle of Pennsylvania; by her stepson John Taylor and his wife, Darcy, of Connecticut, and their children: Julie, Jane and Erin; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her bothers: Jay and Bill. Funeral services will be held at a later date in Connecticut. , 72, of Newport died suddenly on March 21, 2012, in Newport. He was born on March 30, 1939, in Barton, a son of Archie and Dezilda (Rouleau) Turgeon. On April 23, 1960, he married Joyce Monfette who survives him. During his lifetime he was employed by Indian Head Plywood, Canadian Pacific Railroad, Charlie Nadeau's and the city of Newport. He held membership with the Vermont National Guard. He loved working on small engines for all his family and friends and he also enjoyed fishing. He is survived by his wife Joyce Turgeon of Newport; by his children: Jane Turgeon of Newport, Larry Turgeon and his wife, Kelly, of Irasburg, Thomas Turgeon and his wife, Jennifer, of Holland, Rose Turgeon of Newport, Billy Turgeon of Newport, and Bobby Turgeon and his wife, Cindy, of Newport; by his grandchildren: Amber, Joshua, Brittany, Justin, Jazmin, Sahara, Dakota, Melissa, Katelyn, Shania, and Martina; by the following brothers and sisters: Roland Turgeon and his wife, Mariette, of Newport, Gilbert Turgeon and his wife, Lise, of Newport, Norman Turgeon and his wife, Mary, of Newport, Gerald Turgeon and his wife, Irene, of Newport, Roger Turgeon and his wife, Bonnie, of Newport, Lorraine Choquette of Derby, and Anita Fournier and her husband, Jimmy, of Michigan; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers: Raymond and Bert Turgeon; and by his sister Bertha Cotnoir. Funeral services were held on March 26 in Newport. Spring interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Ilene Derick Whelpley

, 90, of Sudbury, Massachusetts, died on Sunday, March 17, 2012, at Sunrise Assisted Living in Wayland, Massachusetts. She was born in Orleans on June 15, 1921, and was raised there in the heart of the Northeast Kingdom. She was the daughter of Kathleen Scholes Derick and well-known Vermont photographer Mack Derick. She was a graduate of Orleans High School and went on to graduate from Lasell Junior College in 1941. She worked as an executive secretary at Metropolitan Life in Montpelier. She returned to Lasell to work with the dean of students and later she became the administrative assistant to the director of student services at Lincoln Sudbury Regional High School. Mrs. Whelpley and her husband, Dick, moved to Sudbury in 1948, living on Concord Road in Sudbury's historic district. She hosted many a fourth of July party on her front lawn as Dick and their three children often marched in the parade, right past the house. She was known for keeping close friendships. She and Dick traveled to many high school reunions in Vermont. This past June was her seventieth reunion at Lasell, and the first that she was unable to attend in many years. Until her death, she was the longest standing member of Memorial Congregational Church in Sudbury having joined in 1949. She loved her church community, enjoyed many years of committee service and was known to sit in the back pew so she could keep an eye on things. Laurie, Mom, Grammy, Shortstop, and to some, Ilene, was a lover of life! She enjoyed entertaining her friends and her annual Christmas party was a big family tradition. She would also be happy playing cards and many board games. Notably, she was an avid reader, and Celtics and Red Sox fan. She is survived by her daughter Judith W. Hawkins and her husband, Edward, and their children: Abigail and Shelley, all of Sudbury; by her son Richard F. Whelpley and his wife, Sharon, of Atlanta, Georgia; by her late daughter Sue's partner, Brian Parrott, of Framingham, Massachusetts; by her niece Laura Crawford of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and by John Coffin of Peacham. She was predeceased by her husband Richard F. Whelpley; by her sister Dorothy Coffin of Orleans; and by her daughter Susan K. Whelpley of Framingham. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Mrs. Whelpley's life on Saturday, March 31, at 1 p.m., at Memorial Congregational Church, 26 Concord Road, in Sudbury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial Congregational Church Memorial and Gifts Fund for music at the church.

, PhD, 65, of Troy, died suddenly on March 23, 2012, in Newport. He was born on September 21, 1946, in Newport, a son of Roger and Marie (Maxwell) Wursthorn. On September 2, 1968, he married Vickey Murphy who survives him. He graduated in 1964 from Sacred Heart High School in Newport, from St. Michael's College in Burlington in 1968 with a bachelor of science degree, from the State University of New York in Albany with a PhD in 1976, and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts. Mr. Wursthorn was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a chemist at Rohm and Haas in Pennsylvania. He loved his Caterpillar heavy equipment, sugaring, restoring vintage cars, helping his neighbors, spending time with his grandchildren and working with young people. He is survived by his wife Vickey Wursthorn of Troy; by his daughter Karla Wursthorn and her husband, Ken Hutko, of Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania; by his two grandchildren: Kenan and Karena; by his mother-in-law Esther Montgomery and her husband, Bryce, of West Danville; by his father-in-law Douglas Murphy of St. Johnsbury; by his sisters-in-law: Valli Smith and her husband, Donald, of Lyndonville, and Sandra Breen and her husband, Mark, of St. Johnsbury; by his brothers: Peter Wursthorn and his wife, Anne, of Marlborough, Connecticut, John Wursthorn and his wife, Lise, of Underhill, and David Wursthorn and his wife, Joanne, of Troy; and by his nieces and nephews: Mark, Valerie, Sara, Justin, Justin, Alissa, Clint and Brandy. He was predeceased by his son Ian on November 20, 1981. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 29, at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 4670 Darling Hill Road, in Newport, with the Reverend Richard O'Hara officiating.
