Robert Beerworth Sr.

of Jay died on November 24, 2011, in Newport. He was born on December 11, 1931, in Newport to Alton and Bernice (Hazard) Beerworth, who predeceased him. Mr. Beerworth lived in North Troy and attended graded and high school in North Troy where he graduated in the Class of 1949. In June of 1949, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a high school airman recruit and had 18 months as an aviation machine mate. During the Korean conflict, he served in flight-testing new Navy fighter planes at Pawtuxet River, Maryland. At this same time, the eight astronauts were flying these test planes. Mr. Beerworth was honorably discharged from the Navy in April 1953. For several years, he worked at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, Connecticut. In 1955, he married the former Christine Gebler. They made their home in Rockville, Connecticut. In 1968, he moved his family to Jay. He was employed at Jay Peak for 28 years where he wore many hats, retiring in 1993. Mr. Beerworth served on the school board at North Country Union High School for twelve years and was chairman for two years. He was also a selectman for the town of Jay for several years and served as chairman for four years. He leaves his wife Christine; his children: John Beerworth and his wife, Mary, of Shrewsbury, Susan Kopec, and Robert Beerworth, Jr., both of Jay; by the following grandchildren: Caeleigh and Connor Beerworth, and Kathryn, Candice, and Jonathan Kopec; his two brothers: Donald Beerworth and his wife, Dorothy, of Vernon, Connecticut, and Steve Beerworth and his wife, Mary, of Milton; and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services were held on November 28 in North Troy. Interment followed in Jay Village Cemetery. Veronica Jeanne (D'Antonio) Finnegan

Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Jeanne Finnegan, 91, died on November 16, 2011, in Gardner, Massachusetts. Mrs. Finnegan was born on March 30, 1920, in Brooklyn, New York, to James and Veronica (Murphy) D'Antonio, the eldest of their four children, and grew up in Queens, New York. She married John D. Finnegan in 1946 and moved to Burlington. In 1950, Mr. and Mrs. Finnegan moved to the Finnegan farm in Lowell where they raised seven daughters. After Mr. Finnegan's death, Mrs. Finnegan moved from the farm to South Burlington and subsequently to Virginia Beach, Virginia. Mrs. Finnegan was a member of the first graduating class from the City of New York Queens College in 1941 where she earned a bachelor's degree. Mrs. Finnegan was a lifelong learner, keenly interested in civic affairs and current events. She enjoyed reading biographies, and historical accounts of the founding fathers and early U.S. Presidents and their wives. Mr. and Mrs. Finnegan enjoyed heated discussions on political issues, and believed it was their civic duty to form an educated opinion. Every election day, she voted, no matter the circumstances. Mrs. Finnegan served on the school board in Lowell, taught remedial reading in the elementary school for a few years, was a substitute teacher, and volunteered in the town library after her children were grown. She cared deeply about individual rights and treated everyone with respect. She loved meeting new people of all ages and was eager to converse about their lives and interests. Her daughters' extended families became her friends. Tiring of the Vermont winters, she moved to Virginia in 2003 where she owned a co-op apartment, enjoyed gracious retirement in a mild climate, and interacted with dozens of peers equally interested in lifelong learning and current events. After her health declined, she moved to Gardner, Massachusetts in January 2010 to be near her daughter, Veronica, and family. Mrs. Finnegan is survived by her brother James C. D'Antonio and his wife, Elizabeth; by countless nieces, nephews and cousins; by her seven devoted daughters: Alice Finnegan of Longmont, Colorado, Mary Rising and Peter of Brightwaters, New York, Elizabeth Ellis of Chinle, Arizona, Barbara Naramore of Suffolk, Virginia, Theresa Osborne and Bill of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Catherine Finnegan-Doyon and Marcel of Denver, Colorado, and Veronica Guay and Mario of Gardner; by her fifteen grandchildren: Sean Givens, Erika Grace and Melanie Sieger, Adalia, Badi, Ruhi, Vahid and Ruhiyyih Ellis, Justin Naramore, Mark and Blaire Osborne, Sara and Allison Finnegan-Doyon, and Joseph and Andrew Guay; and by nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, John Finnegan; her brother John D'Antonio and his wife, Bernadette; her sister Elizabeth D'Antonio; and her dear son-in-law Bill Naramore. Funeral services were held in Lowell. , 69, of Shorter, Alabama, died on Tuesday, November 22, 2011. Mrs. Gendron graduated from North Troy High School in 1960. She loved the Red Sox and was a great fan of NASCAR. She also enjoyed cooking a lot. Mrs. Gendron is survived by her husband Robert; her son Brian Gelo and his wife, Tuesday; her grandsons: Shawn and Jessie; her sisters: Marilyn Page and Sheila Joyal; her lifetime family friend Helen Corliss; her stepchildren: James Gendron, Robert Gendron, and Wendy Robere; her grandchildren: Bobby, Brian, and Christopher; her sisters-in-law: Gabrielle Page of Berwick, Maine, Racheal Page of Lakeland, Florida, and Susan Page of Traverse City, Michigan; and by many nieces and nephews. , 68, died suddenly on November 22, 2011, at his home in Derby. He was born on July 27, 1943, in Newport to Teresa Snay and Harry Smith Royea Sr. Mr. Royea was a veteran of the Vietnam War where he was a helicopter mechanic stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. He was employed for the last 21 years as a car man for CP Rail. He also worked for the state of Vermont Department of Corrections as a corrections officer and as a part-time night guard at North Country Union High School. Mr. Royea was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War and of American Legion Post 21. He loved playing his guitar, flying, and he loved trains. Mr. Wilson is survived by his children: Bernie Royea and his wife, Tracey, of Derby, Sheryl Royea and her companion, Brad Fortin, of West Charleston, and Michelle Kelley and her companion, Pat Lanoue, of Derby; by his longtime companion, Holly Byers of Derby, and her children: Shawn, Tracy, and Christine Priest; his beloved dog, Mindy; the mother of his children, Roxanna Prue, of Newport; his sisters: Miriam Carr of Newport and Carolyn Elliott and her husband, Charles, of Newport; his grandchildren: Nicholas, Melissa, Brent, Michael, Justin, and Collin; his great-grandchildren: Aiden and Brooke; three nieces: Teresa Liberty, Melanie Elliott, and Courtney Elliott; and by his nephew Glenn Elliott. , 87, a lifelong resident of Derby Line, died on November 25, 2011, in Newport. Born in 1924, Mr. Wilson graduated from Derby Academy and worked for several years on the A.S. Palin Farm in Holland. He became employed by Caswell and O'Rourke, Inc. in 1951 and retired in 1989 after 38 years of service. Mr. Wilson was an accomplished classical pianist and played the organ at the South United Church for many years. One of his hobbies was painting nature scenes in oil, pastel and water color. It was a proud moment for Mr. Wilson the day he was invited to display his artistic work for public viewing at the Haskell Free Library. Mr. Wilson is survived by his twin sister Joyce Wilson of Denver, Colorado; his niece Lexie Rye and her husband, Arthur, of Fairfax; his nephews: Randy Bronson and his wife, Cindy, of Waterbury and Dale Wilson and his wife, Rachel, of Charlestown, New Hampshire; and by several grandnieces and -nephews as well as many lifelong friends including Mary, Bruce, Analesa and Eilish Muir of Derby Line. He was predeceased by his parents, Burns and Bessie (Monteith) Wilson; his sister Martha Bronson; and his brothers: Giles, his wife, Ruby, and Bernard. Albert V. Collins

, 82, of Toms River, New Jersey, formerly of Verona, New Jersey, and Troy, died on November 11, 2011. Mr. Collins was a decorated Korean War veteran, a life member of the VFW, and past VFW Post #6255 commander in Cedar Grove, New Jersey. He was a past officer of the Verona Ambulance Unit, a distinguished past president of the Montclair Kiwanis Club, a certified alcoholism counselor for the state of New Jersey, treasurer of the St. Ignatius Cemetery in Lowell, and chairman of the parish council of the Sacred Heart Church in Troy. Mr. Collins graduated from Seton Hall University and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking. He joined the Verona Trust Company in 1950, and retired from within as its vice-president in 1980. Mr. Collins joined the Mount Hebron Cemetery Association as its general manager and retired in 1991 to his home in Troy to pursue his love of animals on his "EZ Acres" farm. He performed the banking operations for student activity funds at North Country Union High School in Newport. In 2006, Mr. Collins relocated back to New Jersey to be near his children and grandchildren. Mr. Collins is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Cecilia (Feeney); his children: Karen, Kathy, Albert, and Caroline; his 12 grandchildren; his two great-grandchildren; his brother Thomas Collins of Verona; and his sister Mary Jane O'Dea of Bloomfield, New Jersey. He was predeceased by his sisters Nancy and Patricia. He will be sadly missed by his family and countless friends in New Jersey and Vermont. , 80, of Derby Line died on November 17, 2011, in Newport. He was born on April 23, 1931, in St. Flavien, Quebec, a son of Alphonse and Marie-Ange (Paquet) Garneau. On August 30, 1952, he married Jeannine Doyon, who survives him. Mr. Garneau worked at Tivoli as a machinist until his retirement in 1993. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, working with wood, and reading westerns. He is survived by his wife, Jeannine Garneau, of Derby Line; his five children: Marcel Garneau and his wife, Jeanie, of Derby Line, Carole Deroehn and her husband, James, of Derby, Giselle Garneau of Derby Line, Roland Garneau and his wife, Lisa, of Derby Line, and Carmen Garneau of Derby Line; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Therese Rodrigue, and her husband, Raymond, of Stanstead, Quebec. , 88, died peacefully at home on Friday, November 18, 2011. He was the second of three children born to the late Orrin and Maddie (Sanborn) Niles of Newport Center. Mr. Niles graduated from Newport Center High School, then received his bachelor's degree in education from Johnson State College and a master's of education from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, where he was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi honor society. His 45 years of work as both a teacher and school administrator were performed in Vermont and Texas. On Thanksgiving Day in 1969, he married Alice Schultz, an El Paso, Texas, teacher, with whom he enjoyed 33 years of marriage. Mr. Niles is survived by his nephew and his wife, Larry and Lynn Messier, of Columbia, who cared for him in his declining years and with whom he made his home for the past 18 months. Other survivors include his nieces and nephews: Steve Messier of Enfield, Mike Messier of Columbia, Sue Blake of Delhi, New York, David Messier of Lebanon, and Debbie Robinshaw of Coventry, along with their children and grandchildren and his stepson John Schultz of Seattle, Washington. He was predeceased by his wife, Alice; his parents, two sisters: Erma Horn of Vermont and Marion Messier of Mansfield; his nephew Todd Messier of Willington, Connecticut; his niece, Sheila Tenofsky of Keene, New Hampshire; and by his nephews Dayton Horn of Columbia and Lyndall Horne of Texas, whom he raised along with their brother, Darrell Horne of Poway, California, following his sister's death. He will be remembered fondly and with admiration for his generosity, kindness and commitment to family. She was born on January 31, 1990, in Newport, to George and April (Chase) Bapp. Ms. Bapp graduated from Lake Region Union High School in 2008, as the valedictorian of her class. She earned her associate's degree from Community College of Vermont in 2011 and was working on her bachelor's degree at Johnson State College. Ms. Bapp was employed by the United States Department of Agriculture at the Farm Service Agency in Newport and by the Community College of Vermont. She also worked occasionally at the Brownington Town Clerk's office. Ms. Bapp spent most of her free time with her boyfriend, Dylan Dewing, and her cat, Mitzy. She also spent a lot of time with her family and loved them all dearly. Ms. Bapp enjoyed shopping and going to the movies with her sister and her mother. Her cousins, Chase and Dawson Walters, were more than just cousins. Rebecca, Hannah, Chase and Dawson enjoyed four-wheeling and camping together. She is survived by her mother and father, April and George Bapp, and her only sister, Hannah Bapp, of Brownington; her boyfriend, Dylan Dewing, and his family; her great-grandmother, Beverly Harbec of Barton; her grandparents: Larry Chase and Beverly White of Brownington, and Linda Chase and Gerald Pray of Brownington, and Audrey Messier of Derby; her aunts and uncles: Eliza and Melvin Walters of Orleans, David and Julie Chase of Brownington, Charles and Diane Bapp of Barton, and Tammy and Steve Jewett of Irasburg; and her cousins: Chase and Dawson Walters of Orleans, Charlie, Heather and David Chase, Brent Bapp of Barton, Lance Bapp of Milton, and Lonnie Griffin of Irasburg. , 56, of Orleans died on November 12, 2011, in Burlington. He was born August 5, 1955, in Newport, a son of Irene (Carbone) Lanoue and the late Rouville Lanoue. He graduated from Lake Region Union High School in the Class of 1973. On August 30, 1986, he married Carlene Mosher who survives him. Mr. Lanoue was a masonry worker and for 17 years he was employed at the Orleans Country Club. He was a NASCAR fan of driver Jeff Burton, a New York Yankee fan, and he enjoyed fishing trips, golfing and horse racing with his good friend Lyman. He also enjoyed many adventurous road trips with his friends. He was a member of the Orleans Country Club. Mr. Lanoue loved his family and friends dearly. He had a great sense of humor and liked to make people laugh. He is survived by his wife Carlene Lanoue of Orleans; his two children whom he adored: Derek Lanoue of Orleans, and Kelley Lanoue and her friend, Eric Chadburn, of Concord; his mother Irene Lanoue of Orleans; his brother Peter Lanoue and his wife, Joanne, of Orleans; his nephews: Shawn Lanoue and his wife, Sheena, Jonathan Dimick, Brandon Campilango, Greg Perkins, and Christopher Mosher; his nieces: Barbara Rowell and her husband, E.J., and Lindsay Perkins and her friend, Derrick; his sisters-in-law: Crystal Perkins and her husband, Michael, of Irasburg, and Connie Campilango and her husband, Scott, of Saratoga Springs, New York; and by his brother-in-law Craig Mosher and his friend, Penny, of New York; and by many great-nieces and nephews. , 95, of Orleans died on November 9, 2011, in Newport. He was born on September 10, 1916, in Brownington, a son of Polydor and Evelina (Choiniere) Lanoue. On April 19, 1953, he married Irene Carbone who survives him. Mr. Lanoue was a veteran of World War Two. During his lifetime, he co-owned and operated Lanoue's IGA Grocery Store in Orleans with his brother, Maurice (Pitt), and was also a mail carrier for the United States Post Office where he retired in 1979. He was a member of the Benevolent Order of the Elks #2155, the American Legion Post #23 for 66 years, and was past post commander, and he was a charter member of the Orleans Lion's Club where he received the Melvin Jones Award, its highest honor. Mr. Rouville was a past president of the Orleans Country Club. His hobbies included golfing and driving all over Northeast Kingdom. He loved being a Vermonter. He also was a woodworker and donated his crafts to the church. He is survived by his wife, Irene Lanoue of Orleans; his sons: Peter Lanoue and his wife, JoAnne, and Glenn Lanoue and his wife, Carlene, all of Orleans; his grandchildren: Shawn and his wife, Sheena, Derick, Kelley, Barbara and her husband, E.J., and Jonathan; his great-grandchildren: Chelsea, Kristen, Austin, Cara, Madison, Logan, Gavan, and Enoch John V; his sister, Gesele Rinewalt, of Pottstown, Pennsylvania; and by several nieces and nephews. , 89, died on Sunday, November 6, at the Newport Health Care Center in Newport, surrounded by family. She was born in Elmore on May 19, 1922, the daughter of Alpheus W. and Eva (Stoddard) Powers. She worked at Ware Knitters in Hardwick, the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury, the Stowehof Inn in Stowe, and as a health care worker. She also sold Sarah Coventry jewelry and made many wreaths. Mrs. Nevens moved to California in 1969 where she earned her GED and enrolled in a beauty school. She taught at a beauty school and went on to own her own beauty shop in Santa Ana, California. She also operated shops in several nursing homes before retiring and returning to Vermont in 1995. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and sewing; also fishing, hunting and going to camp. She liked flowers and cooking, being with family, especially her grandchildren. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Johnson. She leaves a son, John Phelps Jr., and his wife, Jeraldine, of Wolcott; a daughter, Marion Lawrence, and her husband, James, of Kuna, Idaho; six grandchildren: Jane Paine and her husband, Brent, of Morrisville, Jordon E. Phelps and his wife, Lynn, of Morrisville, Robert Lawrence and his wife, Maribel, of Colorado, Winona Lawrence and her husband, Dr. Chris Cusimano, of Idaho, Trisha Henderson of Michigan, and Andrew Lawrence of California; six great-grandchildren: Lauren Paine, Jordon M. , aka Pfinny, 35, died suddenly on Thursday, November 10, 2011, in Burlington. Mr. Pfenning was born to Miranda Malcolm and Marcus Pfenning on November 6, 1976, in Middlebury. Mr. Pfenning spent most of his childhood between Castleton and Westfield, where he attended elementary school and then moved on to North Country Union High School. Along the way, he made many bonds, always leaving a lasting impact on those he shared his life with. There were no strangers in his life because, to him, everyone was family. Mr. Pfenning had a deep, everlasting love for his entire family. He played a large part in the guidance and upbringing of his siblings. His sacrifices, words of wisdom, and never-ending antics will continue to shape their characters and impact their decisions throughout life. Mr. Pfenning had a passion for nature; he loved animals, hiking, camping, disc golf, and any other adventure he could pursue in the great outdoors. He was very well versed when it came to literature, and rarely went anywhere without a good book. He was an avid follower of sports, and a lifelong die-hard Yankees fan. In February of 1998, Mr. Pfenning welcomed his darling daughter, Cassidy, into this world. In his eyes, there was never a prouder moment, or greater achievement, and from that moment on she was the light of his life. He is survived by his mother, Miranda Malcolm; his maternal grandmother, Mary Ann Touchette; his beloved daughter, Cassidy; his siblings: Samantha Norman, Rachel Greeno, Willow Lafferty, Forrest Pfenning, Ian Kyhill, Iris Smith, and Taylor Kyhill; his step-parents: Steven and Teresa Kyhill, Shelly Pfenning, and Bob Rockwell; his close aunts and uncles: Sue and Roger Scott, Les Pfenning, and Vicky Lucier; as well as by many other loving aunts, uncles, cousins, six nephews and, of course, his innumerable friends. Mr. Pfenning was preceded in death by his father, Marcus Pfenning; his paternal grandparents, Phyllis Barnard and Wilbur Pfenning; and by his maternal grandfather, William Malcolm. A celebration of his life will be held for family and friends on Wednesday, November 16, in Burlington. Attendants are encouraged to bring stories and photos to share. , 90, of Newport died on November 11, 2011, in Newport. He was born September 24, 1921, in St. Marguerite, Quebec, a son of Joseph and Lumina (Tardif) Pouliot. On June 24, 1946, he married Irene Goupil in Stanstead, Quebec. In 1952, he came to the Newport area to work for Earl Hackett Farms, and in 1958 he started his own business as a local painter until his retirement in 1983. During his lifetime he was a self-employed house painter. He held memberships with St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newport and the Curisillo Catholic Society. Among his hobbies he enjoyed playing cards, bowling, gardening, and he was a coach for the softball league. He was also a fan of the Montreal Canadians. He is survived by his wife, Irene Pouliot of Newport; his children: Laurent Pouliot of Middlebury, Nicole Poginy and her husband, Michael, of Newport Center, Jocelyn Pouliot and his wife, Barbara, of Newport Center, Clement Pouliot of Newport, Yvon Pouliot and his wife, Melanie, of Middlebury, Suzanne Coggeshall and her husband, Robert, of Bethlehem, New Hampshire, and Joanne Allen and her husband, Danny, of North Troy; nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; his two brothers: Reverend Fernand Pouliot, and Aristide Pouliot and his wife, Aline; his brothers-in-law: Paul Goupil and his wife, Carmen, Rene Goupil and his wife, Lucie, Denis Goupil and his wife, Bibianne, and Lionel Goupil; by his sisters-in-law: Rose Begin and her husband, Emilien, all of Sherbrooke, Quebec, and Irene Goupil of Manchester; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers: Aime, Marielouis, Armand, and Adrien Pouliot; and by his sisters: Maria, Jeanne d'Arc, and Jacqueline. Funeral services were held on November 14 in Newport.
