Roxie Lyle (Woodward) Beard

, 90, of Lebanon, New Hampshire, died in Newport on Monday, January 17, 2011. She joins her husband, Burnell, of 66 years at the big fishing hole in the great beyond. Mr. and Mrs. Beard knew all the greatest fishing places in Vermont and New Hampshire. Mr. Beard taught her how to fish when she became determined not to become a fisherman's widow. She won a state championship for landing the largest lake trout. One of the couple's greatest joys was when they visited their daughter in Island Pond where a tiny guest house accommodated their needs. They towed their old boat to all the nearby lakes and ponds and especially loved the sunsets over Echo Lake. Mrs. Beard also loved quilting and won a blue ribbon at the Orleans County Fair. She made many quilts, which she gave away, donated to nursing homes, or sold. She enjoyed going bottle digging with her sisters and liked playing cards, Scrabble, and doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles. She liked baking pies and making jelly. Putting up pickles and berrying were her highlights. She was an avid swimmer up to the last. She leaves two sons: George Thomas Beard and wife, Louise, of South Sioux City, Nebraska, and his five grown children: Thomas Homer Beard, his wife, Milissa, and their five-year-old son Donald Thomas; also two stepchildren of Gaffney, South Carolina; a daughter, April Hudson, of Island Pond and Waid. Mrs. Beard was born and brought up in Lebanon where she met her lifelong love, Burnell, a Vermonter. He predeceased her on December 7, 2004. Mrs. Beard moved to South Carolina and lived with her son Tommy for 14 months, enjoying visits to flea markets, car shows, and restaurants. For the last five years, Mrs. Beard has been in the loving care of her only daughter, April Hudson, and Waid in Island Pond. She leaves April's daughters, a devoted granddaughter, Tina Stevens, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Lisa Judd; great-granddaughter Mindy Tobin in Columbia, South Carolina; many nieces and nephews; and special friends Penny Palmer and Joyce Coull. She was predeceased by her parents, Thomas W. Woodward and Julia A. Bartlett; by brothers Harry of Tennessee and Leon from Lebanon and his band, Woody and the Ramblers. Sisters predeceasing her are Evelyn Parady, a Lebanon antique dealer; Dorothy Woodward, an area seamstress; Georgianna Nugent, a longtime sewer for Carters, and Elaine Quimby, antique bottle collector. She leaves brothers Robert Woodward, living on the family homestead, and Earl, a resident of Genesis Rest Home, both of Lebanon. , 82, formerly of South Glens Falls, New York, died on January 14, 2011, at Mary's Haven in Saratoga Springs, New York. She was born on March 10, 1928, in Barre, a daughter of the late Oscar and Aurore (Lalande) Laviolette. Mrs. Lague graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Newport and the Bishop DeGosbriand Nursing School in Burlington. She married Raymond J. Lague on October 25, 1952, and they lived in Derby. She was charge nurse at North Country Hospital from 1958 to 1971, until her husband predeceased her on April 16, 1971. She moved to Burlington with her son Robert and her daughter Lynn, where she continued as charge nurse at the Green Mountain Nursing Home. In 1980 she moved to Derby to care for her father while being a full case nurse for Home Health until his passing in 1987. She then moved to Saratoga Springs where she worked at the hospital as a surgical nurse and then the Glens Falls hospital as charge nurse. Later on, she was charge nurse at Our Lady of Hope Nursing Home in Latham, New York, and at Indian River Nursing Home in Granville, New York. In addition to being a devoted and dedicated registered nurse, Mrs. Lague enjoyed oil painting, sewing and her trips to Florida. She volunteered at the Moreau Community Center and helped deliver meals-on-wheels. Survivors include her four children: Joan Allyn Collins, Nancy White and her husband, Bill, of Florida, Robert Lague and his wife, Christian, of Georgia, and Lynn Graham and her husband, Jim, of South Glens Falls; her 11 grandchildren: Casey and Mikki, Christopher, Halsey and Kimberly, Lynn and Robert, Derek, Corey, Emily and Nicolas; several great-grandchildren; her sister Rita Cook of Connecticut; her brother Roger Laviolette of Alaska; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Lague was also predeceased by her brothers Roland and Fernand, and her sisters Hermine Fitzgerald, Alice Lorenz, and Mary Lovely. At Mrs. Lague's request, there will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be conducted in the spring in Newport. , 81, of Newport died on January 17, 2011, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born February 22, 1929, in Newport, a son of Clarence and Mathilda (Huppa) Lantagne. On March 24, 1950, he married Josephine Hart who survives him. Mr. Lantagne was employed for many years at the former Pete Logan's gas station in Newport and then by Reed's Mobil where he retired. His hobbies included tinkering around the house, fixing things, helping his brother with projects, and he loved the company of his dog Ace. He is survived by his wife, Josephine Lantagne, of Newport; his son-in-law Harold Ford of Woodsville, New Hampshire; his two grandchildren: Anthony Ford and his wife, Holly, of Newport and Cassie Ford of Burlington; and by his great-granddaughter Kayla Ford; by his brother Clarence Lantagne and his wife, Dolores, of Newport; his sister Margaret Demers and her husband, John, of Worcester, Massachusetts; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Beverly Ford; his two sisters, Jeannette Reed and Cecile Gunthier; and by his four brothers: Arestide, Roland, Oliver, and Joseph. , 96, of Newport Center died on January 20, 2011, in Barton surrounded by her loving family. She was born September 7, 1914, in Coventry, a daughter of Aylmer and Birdena (Combs) Lawson. On September 12, 1932, she married Cecil Norway who predeceased her in 1988. Mrs. Norway was a very active member of the Newport Center Methodist Church. She was an excellent cook and she crocheted many afghans for family members. She was a very smart, capable, feisty, kind woman with a great sense of humor. Survivors include her two children: Patricia Walsh of Derby Line, and Robert Norway and his wife, Pete, of Barre; by five grandchildren: Martin Walsh and his wife, Elia, of Wethersfield, Connecticut, Heidi Walsh and her husband, John Young, of Glover, Heather Walsh of Derby, Scott Norway of Barre, and Jeffrey Norway and his fiancé, Phoebe Lyon, of Barre; by the following great-grandchildren: J.J. Raquel, Andrew, Charlie, and Samantha Norway, David Kennison and his fiancé, Heather Dobler, Brittany and Katie Walsh; by stepgrandchildren Emily and Sherwin Young; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by five brothers and by her son-in-law Terrence Walsh. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 27, at the Newport Center Methodist Church with the Reverend Nathan Strong officiating. James Christopher Walton

, 70, of South Albany died on January 15, 2011, after a long battle with cancer. He was born on October 12, 1940, in Newton, Massachusetts, a son of James Clement and Alice McNamara Walton. He graduated from St. Michael's College in Colchester with a degree in American studies in 1963 and went to work for the Dow Corning Corporation in Midland, Michigan, where he held positions in marketing, sales, applications engineering and technical services. He left Dow Corning in 1965 to start his own firm, Chase-Walton Elastomers, Inc., in Hudson, Massachusetts. The company served the automobile and aircraft industry, including the NASA Space Shuttle and Hubble Space Telescope projects, with 40 percent of sales exported, primarily to European countries. In 1987, while still managing Chase-Walton, Mr. Walton created and served as president of the SF Medical Corporation, an FDA registered company providing research, development, and finished products for the hospital, medical device, biotech and pharmaceutical industries. Products were sold globally. In 1995, while serving as chairman of his two companies, Mr. Walton and his wife, Jackie, started a UK holding company, JSJ International. A year later, he purchased a Croydon, UK company, G&K Precision Engineering, that provided metal goods and tooling to the aerospace industry in Europe and the U.S. Mr. Walton was president and owner of Chase-Walton Elastomers, Inc. and subsidiaries until his retirement in 2005. He was also a part-time police officer in Hudson and Sterling, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Hudson Rotary, and Assabet Valley Chamber of Commerce and received the Hudson and Maynard Area Chamber of Commerce Presidential Plaque for Outstanding Service and a citation from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts State Senate for 50 years of outstanding business in Hudson. He was also a member of the Craftsbury Village Improvement Society, and a Freemason of the Meridian Sun Lodge #20 of Craftsbury. Mr. Lantagne and the love of his life, Jacqueline, wife of 49 years, enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the world. Mr. Lantagne was a music lover, had a strong desire to serve his community, and was an outdoor and history enthusiast. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline (Menard) Walton of South Albany; his son, attorney Christopher James Walton, and his wife, Linda Sattler Walton, and grandchildren Jacqueline Ann Walton, James Allan Walton, and Julia Bliss Walton; his daughter Michelle Walton Majewski, and her husband, attorney Gregory J. Majewski, and grandchildren Matthew Gregory Majewski, William James Majewski; and his aunt Rachel Kinne Farrar; and cherished friends Doug and Maria Downes. He was an inspirational, compassionate, and extraordinary man and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. A private family service will be held.

, 61, of Villa Grove, Illinois, formerly of North Troy, died on January 4, 2011, after a four-year battle with leukemia and a bone marrow transplant in October. He was the son of Lyndon and Lillian (Leblanc) Hazard who both predeceased him. He is survived by daughter Kristy Burdo and grandson Kayne Burdo, both of the Burlington area; by brother and sister-in-law Dale and Myrna Hazard of Villa Grove; by a sister and brother-in-law Darlene and Jerome Rondeau of Troy; by nephews Dr. Kevin and Mindy Hazard and family of Springfield, Illinois, Korey Hazard of Villa Grove, and Jeremy and Jessica Rondeau and family of Troy. Carl Frederick Larose

of Barton, died at his Florida home on January 4, 2011. He was born on December 27, 1927, in Sutton, a son of Henry and Alma (Spoor) Larose. He leaves behind his wife, Sharon; children Carlene Larose of Barton and Connecticut, Donna Baginkski and her husband, Paul, of Punta Gorda, Florida, Betty Larose of Barton, Buzzy Larose and his wife, Janice, of Barton, and Susan Larose of Fort Myers, Florida; stepdaughters Deborah McCormick of Newport and Cynthia Royer of Barton; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother Robert Larose and his wife, Nancy, of Glover; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters. Mr. Larose's passions were fishing and automobiles. He was a well-known, local entrepreneur who started out with a small Esso gas station in Barton. After a few years, he moved to the Shell garage in Barton, where there was room to do body work and all aspects of auto repair. This is where he started his used car business, as well as pulp and tree trucking. He later bought the John Deere establishment and built a large farm and industrial equipment business, along with the new used car business, currently operating as Carl's Equipment, Inc., of Barton. He was well known for his hard work ethics and dedication to helping others in need. He will be so missed by his family.

, 70, of Irasburg died on January 3, 2010, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 27, 1940, in Orleans, a son of Leonard and Rose (Phoenix) Lussier. In 1989 he married June Willey who survives him. Mr. Lussier was employed as a sander at Ethan Allen Furniture Manufacturing in Orleans. He enjoyed riding the back roads with his wife and seeing all the wonderful sights that the Green Mountains have to offer. He also loved to have the family come to visit, including several grandchildren who came every day. Mr. Lussier enjoyed the companionship of his dog Bear, and he played card games with his mother-in-law Dorothy Willey. He is survived by his wife, June (Willey) Lussier; by his children: John Allen, Tina Lacourse and her husband, Scott, Paul Lussier and his wife, Belynda, Laurie Cheney and her husband, Mike, Norma Rush, Terry Corr, Milton Woodard and his wife, Jody, Tim Aldrich and his companion, Cathleen Bailey, Rodney Aldrich and his wife, Evelyn, and Ronald Aldrich and his companion, Donna Bishop; by 30 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; three brothers: Richard Lussier and his wife, Janet, Red and Larry Lussier; by sisters Gert Burdick and her husband, Larry, and Patty Dunham and her husband, Les; by his mother-in-law, Dorothy Willey; sisters-in-law Diana Beaton and her companion, Ron Pepin, and Sharon McDonald and her companion, Richard Woodard. , 86, of Essex Junction died on January 7, 2011, at The Converse Home in Burlington from complications following a heart attack and stroke in April of 2010. She was born in Graniteville, Quebec, on September 20, 1924, a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (Trainer) Wilson who had emigrated to Canada from Dalbeattie, Scotland. She was educated in Canada, and moved to Vermont where she married and raised her family and always remained proud of her Scottish heritage. She worked for many years at Linton Industries in Derby Line, and later in life she and her husband spent a great deal of time in Florida. Mrs. Meyette was an avid reader (fiction, nonfiction, weekly news magazines, and newspapers). The Brownell Library in Essex Junction was one of her favorite places. She kept up on local and world news, with a special interest in politics. She was a kind and giving person known to be generous in all ways to friends and family. She touched many lives, and was rewarded with their love, respect, and admiration. For years, Mrs. Meyette kept a journal of her thoughts and activities, closing daily with her shorthand signature, "nite." These journals demonstrate her intellect, wit, humor, and especially love of family. She was a great cook, and loved to prepare meals for her family. One of her special talents was the ability to create a tasty dish at seemingly a moment's notice. This earned her the title of "best short order cook in town" by her two grandsons. She is survived by her son Larry and his wife Lise of Essex Junction; two grandsons: Eric of Danbury, Connecticut, and Justin and his wife, Vasanthi of Essex Junction; by three great-grandchildren: Madeleine, daughter of Eric, and Shyam and Roshan, sons of Justin and Vasanthi; by two sisters, Hazel Laberee and Alice Rediker both of Stanstead, Quebec; by two sisters-in-law: Marianne Meyette of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Marilyn Meyette (beloved sister-in-law and best friend) of Waitsfield; by several nieces and nephews; and by a very dear friend, Sharon Senor, of Warren. She was predeceased by a son, Reginald, in 1964 and her husband, Edwin, in 1990. A special thanks from the family to the kind and caring staff at The Converse Home. At Mrs. Meyette's wish, there will not be visiting hours. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the family's convenience.

, 53, of Brownington died on January 4, 2010, at home after a long and courageous battle with leukemia. She was born on November 6, 1957, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Magdelana (Manitsas) and the late Herbert Miesner. After high school, Ms. Miesner attended nursing school and graduated with her BSN from St. Joseph's Hospital in Towson, Maryland, in 1984. She worked at York Hospital, St. Joseph's Retired Nuns of Notre Dame, Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton, and at the Albany and Irasburg schools. She also taught LNA classes at Bel-Aire Nursing Home. Her great pleasures in life came from spending time with Josh and her family and friends, hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. She had a love for good food that she loved to prepare and enjoy with the company of family and friends in an evening of fun and games. She is survived by her son Joshua Miesner; her mother, Magdelana; her stepfather, Peter Manitsas; her brother Frank and his wife, Elizabeth, and their children: Rachel and her husband, Rex Romer, Benjamin, Jonathan and his wife, Melanie, Samuel, Timothy and Abigail; and by aunts, uncles and cousins who live in Maryland and Germany. A celebration of life was held on January 8 at the New Hope Bible Church of Brownington Center. Jeannette (Jean) R. Moquin

, 90, died on January 5, 2011, at Starr Farm Nursing Center. She was born in Greensboro on November 10, 1920, a daughter of Elzear and Rose (Willett) Boudreau. She was married on June 10, 1939, in Barton to the love of her life, Charles Moquin, who predeceased her on February 27, 1969. Together they made their home in Orleans, where they proudly raised their family and owned and operated Moquin's Market for over 25 years until Mr. Moquin's death. She was a member of the Orleans Country Club where she enjoyed golfing and socializing. For 37 years, her winter residence was in St. Petersburg, Florida. She enjoyed dancing, bowling, and playing cards. The friends she made along the way were very dear to her and an important part of her life. She will be remembered for her quick wit, compassion, fighting spirit, and tremendous determination. Every day she wanted to be free of her wheelchair and return to her sunny condo in Florida. Well, she is there now. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Robert Karp and the staff at Starr Farm Nursing Center for the loving care and kindness given to their mom. She is survived by her four children: Charles Moquin and his partner, June Cook, of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Rene Moquin and his wife, Joanne, of Estes Park, Colorado, Jane Ready of South Burlington, and Judy Delage and her husband, Wil, of Georgia; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A Mass will be celebrated in the spring at St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church in Orleans with burial to follow in St. Theresa's Cemetery. , 70, of Brownington died on January 3, 2011, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family. He was born June 14, 1940, in Tunbridge, a son of Herbert and Alice (Martin) Pray. On December 2, 1960, he married Rachel Barrup who survives him. Mr. Pray was a machinist at Tivoly U.S.A. where he retired in 2002. His hobbies included four-wheeling and spending time at camp and with his grandchildren. , 83, of Glover died on January 5, 2011, in Glover. She was born August 5, 1927, in Orleans, a daughter of William and Maude (Nelson) O'Brien. On February 6, 1946, she married Raymond Provencher who predeceased her on January 1, 1967. Mrs. Provencher enjoyed bowling at the Candlepin, crocheting, and playing bingo. George Howard Stone

, 70, of Sheffield died on January 6, 2011, at the Pines Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lyndonville. He was born April 27, 1940, in Barre, a son of Freda (Maynard) Stone and the late Howard M. Stone. He attended Cabot public schools. Mr. Stone entered the Vermont Army National Guard in December 1961 and was honorably discharged in December 1967. On January 4, 1969, he married Ida Mae Carr in Cabot. In his earlier years, he was employed at the Cabot Creamery. He was a dairy farmer for many years and was employed by the state of Vermont in a liquor warehouse. He later worked for Platt Fence in Lyndonville, E.T.S. and Lydell. He retired in 2008. He loved tractors, especially the Minneapolis Moline. He enjoyed farm machinery auctions, dickering, and visiting with people. Survivors include his mother, Freda Leonard, of St. Johnsbury; his loving wife, Ida Stone, of Sheffield; daughter Becky Hubbard and her husband, Scott, of Sheffield; sons Howard Stone and his wife, Heather, of Sheffield and Jay Stone and his wife, Kimberly, of Newark; sister Barbara Ailes and her husband, Glenn, of St. Johnsbury; four grandchildren: Savanna Clark and her husband, Rick, George Stone, Jasmine Hubbard, and Jessica Hubbard; one great-grandchild, Bailey Clark; four aunts; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
